- For me, the winter garden is all about eating fresh. One day I will have a HUGE garden will rows of cabbage and broccoli! ..but for now, a cozy winter meal for two is perfect.
Today I am harvesting a few vegetables out of the garden that are nearing their harvest time. It isn't enough to preserve for long term food storage, but it is absolutely enough to have a wholesome farm to table meal tonight!
In the winter, eating seasonally for people usually means eating a lot of root vegetables, brassicas, alliums, and leafy greens. But historically, it is also the time of eating a ton of meat! Animal harvests usually occur in the fall, and with the onslaught of winter temperatures, few plants will make it through the cold season. Heaty soups, stews, and broths, along with dried goods from the summer harvest, are the main staples of the winter pantry.
Come along with me today as a harvest what I can from my lovely garden, and cook up some deer we harvested during our hunt this last month.

Leeks will keep in the freezer really nicely I have found. Fabulous Leek Potato soup!
I was wondering about that! I definitely did not grow enough this year to preserve...but I'm glad dehydration wasn't my only option 😊

Hi Megan, I’ve just found your channel 😁.
We have a homestead in NSW Australia.
I’ve always had trouble growing broccoli. After watching you I think I might need to grow it in my green house with regulated watering.
Your dinner looks delicious !
Cheers Deb & Dan.
Thank you for watching! I think I will definitely try a heat tolerant breed next year and plant it a wee bit earlier in the fall. I think I could get a full head if I do that!😁
You are doing a good job with your garden. Keep up the good work
Thank you!
It looks so delicious and I’m hungry 😂
🤣🤣🤣
I leave the roots of the leeks in the ground so they grow back.
Oh really?! I had no idea they do that! I'll have to try that on my next harvest! Thank you so much
@@thefiresidefarm you are welcome! I love getting rounds of leeks :)
Why didn't you build it on top of your house? Ceiling space can roast a chicken
