  • A common tree in our area but it has some difficulties that many clients have a hard time dealing with. Also, a bit of high speed stump grinding with the Alpine!

    the weeping foliage makes them look quite tropical.

    Thank you for this video! I found out I have a canary island pine on my property... luckily not over where I park! For pine trees in southern california should I be watering them or should I assume the taproots are doing their job if they got this big + leave em alone?

    That Alpine is just the ticket. I believe that your intro to the Alpine stump grinder was the first of your videos I watched. Good times...

    Canaries .....uh!... lived with them all my life here in Santa Barbara. The ones I inherited on my property were planted in the 20's and are up there about 100'. The rosen/pitch is a bitch! The needles while nice mulch are really water resistant and will make compost hydrophobic for lack of a better term. The tree structure harvests fog to drip well like a redwood , The cones can be rocks but went open are a classic cone good for decoration or dandy fire. starters! Their pine nuts are tasty as well but you got to work for em! They are hardy and long lived but the beetles will get them sometimes and it happens quick lots of times from bozos climbing with spikes who strip and hole the the bark making easy entry for the beetles all over the tree. God will prune them for fog drippers but a wise tree man can make them tolerable by thinning them out and they seem not to sprout out to bad from the trim job.

      Elffirr Design: That was a pretty good overview.
      I used to visit SB area for the book stores, state park beach camps, the mission, and to show people the giantic moreton bay fig at the RR station.

    Was that a Masaratti in the parking lot at the start of the video? Who would park a car like that under a pine.

    would they hybridise with other pinus species due to the huge amount of pollen they produce?

    we have these same (god awful city tree planning and plantings) ... and pine cones that the squirrels contantly chew up for the seeds leaving the pine cob all over. Constantly shedding worse than dandruff on a feral dog ... Spring pollen is insanely horrendous for spring pollen fever and colds. Dont know who was the D-A who put these in for the city (as well as the continued planting of palm trees !!!!) but we suffer thereafter. These need to remain on the island !

      These days I'm allergic to the air and whatever makes me ill is not natural. I think the trees are the least of our problems. There are not many trees that don't have some drawback. Kinda like people.

    Have you found that arborists are consulted by developers before trees are chosen or planted? And what is the point in placing trees in holes in a parking lot? Another good video, so keep 'em coming

    • @opcn18
      @opcn18 7 лет назад +1

      Provide shade to the cars, and provide some visual interest. Those trees probably grew for 20 years, that's not infinite potential but the benefits could outweigh the costs in that kind of time frame.

    • @MsMesem
      @MsMesem 7 лет назад

      Why plant trees in a parking lot???!!!!!! When I see a parking lot without trees I ask who could create such a sterile, nasty landscape. Choose the right trees and a permeable area around to allow water to infiltrate and you have birds in your car park and shade.

    You'd think there'd be enough complaints from the tenants that the trees would be removed all together. Thanks for the video.

      I'd rather look out on those trees than a carpark. They can't affect that many parking places and at only one period in the year. Heck there are some tree haters here who don't see that you can make accomodations.

    Boy, I was digging on the music, made me want to get up and do some swing dancing ! :-)
    By the way, I really don't like those types of pines, but to each his own.
    Thanks for sharing and take care.

    got a similar pine here in michigan where the cones and needles point up and the needles are very sturdy and sharply pointed which is very dangerous (got one in the eye once).the pollen is awful like this pine. it gets everywhere ,halls apt. ,all over the sidewalks and streets.the worst part is like tracking in mud you track in the pollen dust.
    WHY ANYONE WOULD PLANT THESE KINDS OF PINES IS BEYOND ME!

  • @we7438

    I'll have to add the "basil stomp check" to my TRAQ protocol.😉 Seriously, that a good idea. Also, love the swing music.

    Thank you for all your video's. What brought your attention to the hallow root system on that one pine? I'm sure you don't go around stomping the base of every tree. Thanks, Bill in Canada

    As pine trees go, it is a handsome tree. While I understand the draw backs associated with this specie, I also appreciate the visual beauty. Life is a series of trade offs.
