    Wow lots of new ones i have never heard about .... thank you so much 😊.... screen plants makes for better neighbors! We had to cut down our white pine trees and i just about had a stroke looking at our neighbors yard and house .... we spent $1,500 building a berm and planting shrubs on top.

    Great series. I started a privacy hedge about a year ago and have roughly 30 plants right now. It's a mix of Nellie Stevens, Caroline Sapphire, Green Giants, Blue Point Junipers, Emerald Green Arborvitaes, Blue Steel Arizona Cypress and a few others mixed in. It's been a really fun project and already looks nice with the different greens and blues. In 10+ years it should look amazing.
    This channel has been a huge help in the project and has made landscaping a much bigger hobby of mine.

    Absolutely loved series 12 and three of these shrub videos. It is exactly what I was looking for and needed when choosing in my new backyard garden. I have been here one year and I put a lot of thought into what I want to certain places as far as height and width now I can use your video to guide me on my journey. Thank you again so very much.

    Hello Jim, this video series of 3 was quite good, but now I’m even more overwhelmed with choices. A bit about a landscape goal, my backyard opens to a vast undeveloped area (it’s wonderful ) except for strong winds. I’m looking for screening plants as a windbreaker that would huge the corners of my lot. What would you recommend? It would be wonderful for a grand prize drawing for Wake/Durham/Orange counties have you visit someone’s garden (mine’) and draw up a landscape design and plant recommendations. Now that’s a GRAND PRIZE.

    Thanks for this series. By the way, I planted a couple of Olive Martini Elaeagnus and the deer have started eating on them this fall. I don't know if this variety is less deer resistant than Pungens or not. I'm always trying to outsmart the deer but it is a losing battle. By far the best shrubs for shady conditions and deer resistance have been the Illicium! Love them!

    I met master gardener who told me evergreens are always growing so it's ok to fertilize when you plant.

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  Год назад

      Depends on the plant as to whether poorly timed fertilizer could harm it, so not a completely accurate statement.

    Thank you! I love your tip about using different plants. Like many others, I live in the city and have a very narrow space to create a privacy fence. Please make another video about planting in narrow spaces- I think it will be a very helpful and successful video. I’m in zone 6B. Main problem is my backyard only gets 2-3 hours of sun. Which plants would you combine for both privacy and year round interest? Please help! The space is only about 10ft wide and I need to create a narrow privacy fence so I can have some space to entertain family and friends :)

    Why is Nellie Stevens so hard to prune? Is it because it gets too tall so quickly? If I had a 16' orchard ladder, would the problem be solved?

    Thanks for the great information on screening plants, Jim. We have quite a few of them in our landscape. I have a question on one that I don't think you mentioned, Emily Brunner. We have 3 large Emily Brunner hollies and one of them has started turning light green and losing leaves on one side of the plant this year. The other side is healthy and dark green. We fertilized with Holly Tone but are wondering if we cut it back in late winter it could rebound. We would hate to lose one of the three. Thanks, Jeannie

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  4 года назад

      Is it two separate plants that were in the same container or just a branch from one. Either way it is likely some root damage that occurred. It will likely fill back in over time. It may require some pruning though

    • @ProPlugger
      @ProPlugger 4 года назад

      @@JimPutnam We planted 3 separate plants about 12 years ago. Only one has the issue with half of it losing leaves and turning a very light green. Would it be better to cut those branches back or cut back the entire plant? It's about 12-15 feet high.

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  4 года назад +1

      @@ProPlugger It will probably need both, but wait until late winter. Remove the dead and take a little off the top to encourage lower growth

    I live in the south with clay soil also. I want to know if you could tell me what I could plant for privacy screen?
    My problem is the fact I have a natural spring in back and side of my land. Some of the area is not that bad but some is very wet and stays that way all year. My neighbors on my side are have the same problem with the spring on there side. They don’t care to do anything about it. There no slope for me to drain the water somewhere else. I have been looking all over for some kind of tree or shrub that will work. I find one, then I look on another site and they say no you can’t plant that tree or shrub in poor drainage soil. Please help!!!!
