      I am a woman. I was diagnosed with moderate-severe ADHD as an 8 year old child. I have been even put into fostercare because of it from 10yrs old til 19 years old. I never "grew out of it". I am now a 31yr mom of 2 very small children. I feel that since i am a woman instead of a man, that my diagnoses(which is in my medical records btw) of ADHD is unrecognized. My doctor has me currently taking bupropion/wellbutrinXR. But its for bipolar. And of course im beyond fed up with trying to juggle everyones necessities and not succeeding. I need more help(not a handout). On top of having horrible medical coverage my options are so very limited. Please help me help myself somehow.

      Hey Dan, i just discovered your channel , i also discovered yesterday that i had ADHD. I was troubled at first , was i disabled ? is it a handicap ? i told my brother and my mom that i was convinced i had ADHD, they were very skeptical and i can't blame them for that, but the closest person in my world doubted and did not understand how i feeled on something that is so important , it highlighted many problems i had in my life , with my studies , relationships ... Anyway , i've spent the last hours searching and trying to understand my new (old ) identity , and here i am , at your video , telling exactly what i believe , that we have superpowers with our differences.
      I started to be an entrepreneur since half a year, because i wanted to be free , to work with my own rules , environment , methods and also to explore all my ideas , because i feel so absorbed by what passionates me.
      I just wan't to say thank you, because i think we all need inspiration when we are lost , and foremost positive inspiration. The way you see ADHD is the way i wan't it to be , in a optimistic position , not a disability , thank you so much.

      I actually believe it can be enhanced ,one day I was working at walmart and my a.d.d kicked in I was working on a crate of 64 boxes and got it done in 25 min and my co-workers Said I looked like I did crack on how fast I was I don't know what triggered it but people are so worried on curing it instead making it better I believe we have potential

      Markos Vidalon here's a tip since I have ADHD since I was born I know how it is so what you can do to keep that power contained is get as much energy out as you can try to make him go outside or even run around the house if your like my parents they want to hear the tv and doesn't want me to infer with it cause of my energy so I always go outside and get as much energy out and eat dinner then go to sleep and here's a tip to tell if this if anyone is saying that he's to active then tell him to say go I could be the flash one day

    • @viktords2140
      @viktords2140 6 лет назад +1

      Markos Vidalon It’s important to be patient with him and support him as much as he can at the start. The first years, to me, have been the hardest. As soon as he finds a way to deal with it, he’ll make progress on his own. But it’s also very important to draw a line. Don’t let him roll over you because of ADHD. Keep him busy, don’t complain about him being to hyperactive but act as a normal parent. He needs to know when to control himself. It’s tough, but you’ll get there. My parents have done a really good job with me. The only downside I suffer is the medication I have to take to focus, which really bums me out but without it, the road to where I am now would’ve been a lot harder. I was told to go to a school for special kids with a disorder or less gifted. Turns out the system failed and instead of an iq of 89 I had a lot higher (120+). I’m currently studying at university. I was blessed to get the help and support of y parents. So I recommend you to do the same. Patience and even professional guidance.

    • @viktords2140
      @viktords2140 6 лет назад +1

      Also it’s important to listen to what he wants, what he thinks. Of course every kid is different but as the saying goes: give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day, teach him how to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime. Morale: this is his journey and he will have to learn how to deal with it and help him on the way but this is something he has to do for himself.

    I understand the hyperfocus , it is basically how people become so focused into reading a book they see what is happening in the book and cannot feel or hear sensation outside of reading that is an example of hyperfocus, where driving a car is near opposite that.

I use it to my advantage and I’m able to be 5 steps ahead of everyone around me because of how fast my brain works. In my line of work it’s my super power. Now my daughter has it and I get to help her in using it to her advantage instead of thinking it’s a burden.

I can look how far ive come through my hurdles and see that it has certainly served me during my journey through life. In this stage of my life Wife/Mother/ Entrepernuer I desire to manage it and not surpress it or feel flawed about it. There’e this thought I will like to let go of and its goes a lil something like this...“ I must be driving them crazy” “I hear I exhaust people just from me talking” So even though I have great content - I desire to slow down/feel confident/and not let the opinions of others limit my potiental !!!! This video is excellent, glad I found this. I believe ADHD is part of our evolution and we need to learn to use this sickness or disorder or .... and not use pills. Meditation, writing, running are more than enough. Someone with ADHD is like a killing machine if you provide him with the structure, routine and some good habits he will achieve things 100 times faster than a normal human being I would bet. I think I have this thing too and it gives me more strength or energy it is like running 24hours a day. I just have difficulties on getting started but than is amazing. There are 2 parts that I struggle most with 1 is planning 2 execution. I have had many goals that I haven't achieved but when I look back I realize I can fulfill them all in one day. Important is to have a purpose and then create a plan visualize it and then execute it get the fruits and go on an island or somewhere to relax to disconnect with what you just did and see it in another point of view soo you can be proud of. We need to do the work we have and then stop and reflect, and repeat.

    I am a self-taught programmer with ADHD without any college experience and all of my peers have master's degrees. I also live my life and spend my money very differently. Not a fan of consumerism, and I naturally make my money work for me. My way of thinking is very systems oriented. I always thought this was how everyone thought, but I have grown to realize that it is a unique, rare quality in only a few. I believe ADHD is the key to hyper focus - which is the catalyst to my success thus far.

    This video is 4 years old now, and I just found it. I'm a software dev and when I was a kid docs wanted to put me on Ritalin as well. And you're the first one I've heard of that confirms what I've been saying!
    HYPER FOCUS!
    It sometimes takes a bit to get me into that state. But music or white noise is always the best way. And once I'm there I lose all track of time and become a powerhouse programmer. I get so deep that when someone comes around to ask me a question (questions about the weather are the worst) I have to control myself and not get angry! It takes about a minute for me to get into their wavelength and understand what they're saying. I swear, sometimes, it sounds like they're speaking Japanese at first!
    But I do find that the moment they leave, I put my headphones back on and BAM! I'm right back where I started.
    Thank you for this vid!

    My Da, I and my son have ADHD. We all used caffeine to get to sleep and calm down. I had my run around the house 10 times or do pushups when he got wound up and it brought him back his self control. I joined a karate school in my late teens and worked up to black belt and it helped me. Looking back, my Dad was a farmer which took immense energy all day to succeed and he really did, leaving my Mom enough assets to live out the next 30 years after he died. Your meditate, exercise and energy plans played out well in our lives. Now at 71, I am visiting the person management issue all over again and it is working.

Visually my mind processes information way faster than everyone else. People are constantly amazed by my ability to recognize things in my environment. When I was a kid and my dad and his friends would take me hunting they were constantly amazed by my ability to find fallen birds. I agree. As we know, if you have ADHD, it has been there since youth. However, per the research and confirmed through multiple researchers-, and hopefully only in the past.., many women are not diagnosed until later in life, due to their children being diagnosed with ADD. Thus, I wonder how I made it all those years... That thought stopped quickly as- well, more shall be revealed later...
    As in other cases, many will put their kid(s) first then as things settle, seek additional assistance, testing and if needed, medication.
    In a Nutshell, ADHD people do NOT fit into a mold. That is probably why I like the divergent and hunger game movies. From everyone that I know with ADHD, we have learned to work harder, stronger, and persevere more than others to meet societal "acceptabilities."
    I say it is our time to SHINE to show the world that we ARE and ASSET! We care for people, contribute to science and technology, and just because we are fidgety- could be critique that the session is boring and no one else wants to admit it. :)

He has had trouble in school since pre-k and was diagnosed with ADHD in the third grade....He is now in the sixth grade. Our journey has gotten a bit better in some ways, but worse in other ways if that makes sense...but we're still fighting for a great change bc the schools and teachers really aren't patient enough or even have a certain limitation for diagnosed children when discipline is involved.... they're quick to just suspend them instead of work with parents like me....so again, this gives me a way to motivate my child to be greater at what we're working toward.... thank you

    I have inattentive ADHD (formerly ADD) and didn't relate to much of what you said, except the part about hyperfocus. I have the ability to be so intently distracted in something I'm interested in, that it can be misconstrued as being "hyperfocused" lol. My family used to say that I was hard of hearing if they were trying to call me or get me to snap out of it, but the truth is I hear fine. It's simply that I can tune out just about anything and anyone lol.
    One of my comorbidities is maladaptive daydreaming. I feel my throat constricting in sadness just acknowledging that. It is such a major time suck, bc I've spent so much of my life building worlds in my head, since it was how I coped while growing up in my harsh reality. The one time, that I didn't feel as conflicted about this condition, was while watching the movie "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty". I felt incredibly seen.
    Anyway bc I get distracted, I CAN'T have music or background noise. My brain is so used to building worlds and stories that if I surround myself with anything too interesting or amusing, I'll be lost for hours building on the words of a song or creating a fantasy out of the random presence of a parasailer passing my high-rise balcony. I've managed my condition much better over the years, but it's still a struggle, which is why it's so reassuring finding others in our community who have found success in spite of it all.

    MAJOR SHOUTOUT TO YOU for this video. I really loved that it was short and sweet and very on point. I felt this in so many ways, and it's nice to see others like me out here. I'm in so many ADHD groups on Facebook, and all they all seem to hate it, and they don't like those who don't take medication either. Even the ones that don't say anything bad about it and just say it isn't my thing. They end up having these long winded replies about how that's good for me and all, but they need it. OK. I just wanted to express myself. Also, if you say you believe it's a SUPERPOWER, they find that as being "passive aggressive" or whatever. Again, just like you...expressing myself. I'm actually going to take a moment to read these comments, because I know it's here without a doubt. It never fails no matter how positive your outlook is. Stop being mad, and do your best to learn and adjust. I struggled also, but the more I learned about myself, it's helped turn everything completely around. It really is a gift and a superpower. Thank you for posting.

    Hey Dan. Great video. I'm a 23 year old who just found that the reason behind the way I was for so long is actually a disorder named ADHD. I mean, my parents have always noticed that I have had talents in many fields but I never really pursued to the end to excel. They would point out how impulsive and fickle-minded I am. Even though my dad has always scolded me for being undisciplined and mentally absent but as my brother often tells me that my Dad always talked about me behind like "He is so talented but it hurts to see how he's wasting it." I am a natural singer but I never pursued it with classes or anything. I started guitar but never finished it. I was good at maths, so got into a great tech college but I have really destroyed my gpa. I am a pretty good speaker and communicator but I never attended any toastmaster or good public speaking courses to sharpen my skills like dad advices me. I should read books but I find it hard to finish books once picked up. Personally, I think I can be a pretty funny guy, kinda like Jim Carrey ( he's ADHD too :D )..but cant gather courage to try stand-up. Now that I know I have ADHD, I don't wanna let this life go to waste. I wanna make most of it and reach the biggest heights that I humanly can. But, I don't know which direction/field to choose. My head is so complex. Its frustrating.

    • @danmartell
      @danmartell  8 лет назад +1

      +Derek Sunario try stand-up... don't let your fear stop you. Better to try and bomb and than to always wonder what could've happened.
      Doesn't mean you need to do it for the rest of your life... but atleast pick a date, and commit and try.
      Maybe reading a book on stand-up will help you keep your focus if you know you're going up on stage :)

    At 24 I am a life long ADHD combined form individual. I’ve been medicated on and off my whole life whether it was Ritalin or Adderall XR or IR. Medication helped me get through college but here’s the thing, I only took it as needed (a big exam, project) so even if I had rough side effects I could compensate with a little drinking or some other vice also my schedule wasn’t taxing every day so if I had a heavy class day I knew the following day I could recover from a heavily medicated day where I might not sleep very well.
    THIS IS THE REALIZATION IVE HAD AFTER COLLEGE. We with ADHD suffer from numerous things not just inhibition issues in regards to our professional work life. We also have issues at home in relationships and many other aspects of life. I realized medication is really only a band aid and in my case all medications had so many side effects that I just couldn’t handle taking them every day. I wanted to be my best self everyday and be consistent, ,we all know that super power feeling of when the meds kick in/ but we also know how terrible it feels when we come down and we’re left with the same reality we’ve always had. I’ve gone off medication and I’m accepting the way my brain works, I literally live in every moment of my life 100%. I don’t let my mind trail off, I’m like a real version of spongebob just jumping from task to task never over thinking. I find when I do this I can start things easier and with every completion I get a little dopamine kick. When it comes to our hyper sensitivity, I just ask myself when a troubling thought comes to mind, is this productive to think about, a, I over reacting or being impulsive with my emotions if I find that’s the case I throw the thought away.
    Best of luck to all with ADHD drop the meds, we don’t want to be normal, we’re creative super charged people. Don’t dull life, don’t dull your brain, learn more about yourself and be mindful. ADHD presents just as many gifts as it does complications.

    Yes, you're right. What you say is (for me) obvious. The challenge is how to execute those nice ideas we've already come up with. And keep on track when it becomes boring. For this, I see only 3 options - being able to get a job where you do only the smart innovative and creative things in a company, or as an entrepreneur get a partner good on execution and operational stuff, or use meds - and get employees to do the boring stuff, but use meds - in order to be able to be on top of everything going.

    • @danmartell
      @danmartell  6 лет назад

      I think you can do boring stuff if you gamify it, so that it's always a challenge and forces you to get into flow.
      Not sure I agree.
      The big think is know they self and test different things to help self medicate.
      I just feel alot of people aren't willing to build int the structure and OWN their issues and are too quick to say they can't or I need medication.
      Ex: Clean eating + Hydration
      That ^ would take care of 60% of the people's issues imho.

    Once my girl friend told me that she was interest of one product on facebooks fleemarket group and that she cant find it because there is so many new products coming all the time. I said that I can find it in 5 minutes if she can tell all details of that picture of a product. So she told me everything that she rememberd and that was not a much. So I started to scroll down 10,000+ pictures and she told me that I should do that slower, because she cant see pictures well because of my fast rolling speed. I told her to shut up so I that can focus. Yes, I had hyperfocus on that moment and I found that picture in 2 minutes after I scrolled down about 5000 pictures.
    I just love hyperfocus.
    I just find out that I have ADD. Before diagnose I just thought that I'm just wierdo who thinks too much with 100 unfinished projects because when you are doing one project you get an idea of 4 new ones and you just cant focus on that one that you were just making untill you plan these 4 new ones.
    And for me too it helps to focus on places where is a lot of regular bacroud noise or just some music or talk from the radio. it is kind of overload of distractions...well not really... my favorite place to think with focus is near the lake in a alder or aspen forest with a little bit of wind on a late summer day. thats the best white noise that I have found :).
    Now I have to find out how to manage through the school day if I have 6 different subject in 8 hours. At least now I know why it is so hard.
