  • Recorded in glorious mono from the front row of the Festival Hall by Christopher Gardiner - a young fan with a Sony cassette recorder. Chris very kindly gave me a copy of the recording in the early 2000s.
This Festival Hall concert, to promote the 'Rosemary Lane' LP, was Bert's only solo appearance of the full-time Pentangle era (between early 1968 and early 1973). Several of the songs performed would never be performed again, although two weeks later Bert would record five of the numbers he played at the Festival Hall for a BBC radio 'Sounds of the 70s' session (Nobody's Bar, Twa Corbies, Bird Song, Omie Wise, Tell Me...) - a copy of which is yet to turn up.
The images from the show were taken by Shepherd Sherbell for the sleeve montage of the Pentangle's late 1971 LP 'Reflection'. The concert ad is from Melody Maker and, from around 25:30, I've added the images and text from a 25/6/71 preview of the show from London magazine Time Out.
The audio is unedited. I've used Roxio software to boost the music volume by 60% (vis a vis the applause) and to gently EQ the sound. Amazing that the recording exists, isn't it?

There's something about that Rosemary Lane period where Bert shone very brightly indeed. The version of Silly Woman here is ridiculously beautiful. Just when I thought Jansch had no fresh spells to weave, there's this. Thanks Colin.

Dear Colin thanks very much for this rare and joyful testimony of Bert's immense talent. Never get enough of his poetry and eerie voice. What I found amazing is that every perid f his carreer has something new to bring. The last years his voice was mre profound and so much bluesier, I can't help but cry each time I listen to some of his songs

Spellbinding. Thought the River Sessions concert was one of his best on here but this equals if not surpasses it. Good to hear his intros and asides too, always a highlight for me, like in those heady days of the 60s, sat awestruck in smoky pub back rooms.

Friends, forgive me for hogging the limelight here, I've already commented once on this great show, but on my second listen I have to say how haunting and hypnotic this recording is. It's very folk club intimacy writ large, known what I mean? Thanks to those of you who were there and left your memories for the rest of us. Bless you.

I can't say how wonderful it is to hear this. I was in the second row, 16yrs old, mesmerised. I'd heard the records but thought no-one could really sound like that live, but Bert did only more so. Anne Briggs also played an exquisite set, and COB got an encore which they so little expected they had to sing their final song (a show stopper called 'Bones') again. Would that those performances were available too. Temps perdu.

@@johndalton2059 Hi John, COB were Clive's Original Band, the Clive in question being Clive Palmer. The music they played was mainly from their first album, Spirit of Love. What fascinates me in retrospect is that this was (I understand) their debut gig as a band, and prior to it they were living in a caravan in Cornwall. So quite a big transition to the RFH.

Been obsessed with Pentangle and Bert for about 20 years, this is as good as anything I've (n)ever heard.
I'm in debt to your upload.
He plays (possibly) my two fave Bert tracks in Wayward Child and Silly Woman back to back and I'd say his voice is even better than the record. The guitar has so many layers and volumes it's staggering. I'll be astonished if I find a better live recording of anyone on their game as this. Bert is a peerless Scottish treasure.

    Hi Colin
Chris Gardiner here, long time no speak!
Hope that all is well with you?
It was I who recorded the Bert RFH show and gave you a copy of the tape, so if you can add a credit that would be nice?
It's a pity the recording didn't get released as originally intended. it deserves a wider audience.
    All the best
    Chris

Fantastic Chris - lovely to hear from you! I had lost the paper trail, hence your name. I will certainly add it here. Since this upload, I've had the recording carefully restored/mastered in the hope that it might be deemed suitable for release (to be clear: this upload is the not-mastered original). Permission to release is out of my hands and has thus far not been forthcoming. I share your view that it should be made widely available in the best sound possible. Contact my privately, Chris - it would be good to get the original cassette digitised on high-end gear at 24-bit. I'm happy to get that done for you. I'm easy to find online. :-)
