NUMBER ONE most important piece of equipment we use EVERYDAY | Ep 27 Rocna Anchor Special

  • This is a Special Episode and we are really excited to show it to you now! We have put a lot of love and time into this one ;-) When we were in St Lucia we finally managed to get our hands on a brand new 25kg Rocna anchor. We mounted it and straight away we noticed a huge difference!
    The new anchor digs in straight away and slowly and steadily we start trusting our anchor again. No more anchoring at the very back of the mooring field just because we don't trust our anchor and no more paying for marinas just because we can't get the anchor to set properly.
    We are super happy to team up with Rocna in this video, in exchange for our thoughts on their product they gave us a better price.
    Hope you like the episode! And as always, please share your thoughts. We love hearing what you think :-)
    Much love,
    Chris, Steffi and the Lil Captain

    ABOUT US | KNOTVIKINGS :
    We are a family of 3: Chris, Steffi and Leo who left Stockholm in Sweden in June 2017.
    This is our story on how we sail our 37ft Najad 37 sailboat from 1981 across the North Sea, down the European coast, through the English Channel, Bay of Biscay and lately across the Atlantic.
    OUR STORY
    We took the big step of quitting our jobs and made some major changes in our lives to fulfil our dream of going long distance cruising together. We don't have a set plan on where we are going nor for how long we will be gone, but instead, we try to explore the world together as a family and live our lives from day to day as much as we can.
    While uploading this we have just come back to our boat in Grenada for the hurricane season.
    Stay tuned for a lot more episodes to come!

    Great Video! I have learned to put a small length of chain between the swivel and the anchor. This way if current or wind changes you won't put all the load on the pin sideways. The Rocna digs in and holds so well that it won't spin. The pin can only take so much.
    That you for your videos, well done!

    • @KnotVikings

      That is very true and if you can it’s a good idea on our boat that won’t work because of where the windlass Is. when the wind turns 180 degrees the anchor will break free but for us it has always dug in again straight away. Even in som pretty intense squalls.

    Rockna does not reccomend using a swivel directrly on the anchor. rocna.com/knowledge-base
    The failure mode of swivels is typically when they are subjected to lateral forces. This means it is ideal to install the swivel in such a way that lateral forces cannot be applied across the joint. One way to do this is to use a reputable inline type with a few links of chain between the anchor and the swivel. Generally, installing the swivel directly on the anchor shank is not a great idea.

      What about Mantus?

    • @KnotVikings
      @KnotVikings  5 лет назад +1

      They also make great anchors, personally I haven’t tried it so can’t say for sure what is better but I know we haven’t dragged with our Rocna even when we can’t put out the scope we normally do.

    • @MikeSantis
      @MikeSantis 5 лет назад +1

      @@KnotVikings some youtube videos suggest and proves that actually Mantus is even better than Rocna. I'm a bit sceptical that maybe Rocna got a big push, talk and popularity among the sailors community and that is also the reason that is more popular than Mantus and not that it is actually better than Mantus. I would like to upgrade my CQR to a Rocna next year. But the more I research the more I turn to Mantus. Will see. Also, how heavy is your Rocna and how heavy is your boat?

    • @KnotVikings
      @KnotVikings  5 лет назад +1

      That is true I was watching a lot of the comparison videos and I testing anchors is really difficult to get real life results, if the anchors are set well I would argue that the difference is negligible. The real question for me is how well they perform in less than ideal situations like small scope, Rocky/difficult bottoms and so on.
      For me price would be a huge factor, you could also check out Manson anchors same concept as the other ones and haven’t met that many cruiser that have them but the ones that do are very happy that I have met.
      We have a 37ft boat but she weighs in on a whopping 14ton so we have a 25kg Rocna with an 8mm chain. Rocna recommends a 10mm chain but if we went down that road we would have to replace the windlass and that’s not something I want to get into.

    • @KnotVikings
      @KnotVikings  6 лет назад +2

      It’s an awesome anchor!
      Yes you are right We always put a rope snubber in, recently we started doing before backing down on the anchor. Read somewhere that it was better for the windlass.

    • @Misteribel
      @Misteribel Год назад

      You read that right ;). Windlasses are usually rated for a few thousand Newton, which you'd easily surpass if you go 2500 rpm in reverse. And it depends on how the windlass is connected to the boat.
      Bottom line, be careful with your expensive equipment ❤.

      Shorten your scope 2:1 and cleat off your chain to a solid cleat then motor over your anchor and it will pop right out and save your windlass.

    • @Misteribel

    • @KnotVikings
      @KnotVikings  3 года назад +1

      Cute? I think it goes without saying that you do that only if it’s possible :) Whenever we have the possibility to do so, yes we do that. But lately we have been sailing in murky waters of Sweden anchoring sometimes in 20m and no, then we don’t dive on it. Have a nice summer and thanks for watching!

    • @Misteribel
      @Misteribel Год назад

      @@KnotVikingsI agree, cute is not the word I'd use. Any serious sailor will often dive to see if the anchor is set. In clear water, like in the Med, I don't need to, as I can see it with an aquascope.
      To be fair, with good anchors like Rocna, Mantus or Spade, I get lazy and skip on it. But with the CQR I did it all the time.

      Hi. You give no indication of your boat, sailing area, or requirements. So it's impossible to advise. For my boat, we shortlisted to the rokna and mantus anchor for the bow, (we chose mantus), and fortress for the kedge. Fyi mixed chain and rope is ok for sand and mud. Use chain only for (dead) coral and sharp rocks. It cuts through the rope.

      Hello Barry
      We are a bit unusual. Living full time on a 33’ trimaran. We start cruising next summer. We leave Maine USA bound for Newfoundland , Canada. From there he head south for the Caribbean. Mostly coastal cruising with an occasional overnighted. Anchoring will be the vast majority of stops. I can’t Cary tons of chain on this small boat. We also have no windless. Thank you. Jeff

    • @barrydavies2977
      @barrydavies2977 4 года назад

      @@jsonnichsen ok. This is just my view. Others may disagree. Your boat is a similar size to mine. So you need to check that your bow arrangements will take the hoop and shape of new generation anchors. If you have space I would choose a 20kg mantus (1st choise) or rokna (2nd choice) and 7kg fortress kedge. In my experience the fortress is hugely powerful, but does not like changes of direction. Chain and warp is acceptable if you take account of my notes above. Hope that is some help.
