I could write whole paragraphs about how brilliant this performance was. Ms. Mazzie is the only Cinderella I've seen who doesn't seem embarrassed or ashamed at the fact that this is her first big decision or that she doesn't know what she wants -- she simply accepts it as the life she's lived up to this point, which means that her final revelation of not deciding (and leaving a shoe) can feel self-assured, brilliant, and a bit clueless -- more comically so. All that, and more! The intimacy of a cabaret room means that her face can deliver SUBTLETIES like the three distinct thoughts on "but then what if he knew that who you were when you know that you're not what the thinks that he wants?" You are missed, Marin Mazzie!!!
This is the youngest I think I've ever seen Marin performing and she is absolutely beautiful and transcendent; so pure, clear, and translucent. She left us too soon. I was fortunate enough to have seen her in her final Broadway play, the revival of "The King and I" at Lincoln Center.
Lovely, lovely job. I think Marin's first Broadway show was "Into the Woods". She was in the replacement cast as Rapunzel. She may have covered for Cinderella as well. First I knew of her was in the Tony's--her singing of "Happiness"--something I will never forget. :)
As the other reply states, Marin’s first broadway show was Big River. And Marin was a replacement Rapunzel but I know she said she understudied for 3 roles - definitely Cinderella and The Witch, but I’m not positive about the 3rd. She mentioned in some interviews that she once had to do all 3 roles in one week because people kept calling out sick.
Hi Drew, the way I kept up back in the 1980s as a teenager with Broadway was through "Theatre World". I had totally forgotten that I did see her picture in "Big River" replacing Patti Cohenhour. Patti went on to play Rosa Bud in "Mystery of Edwin Drood".
Hi Meredith, yes you are right in that it was "Big River". I saw "Into the Woods" in March of 1988. Bernadette only played the witch for 3 months with Betsy Joslyn as her replacement--the rest was the original cast. I knew Marin was the replacement for Rapunzel and also covered for Cinderella. I did not know that she might have covered for the Witch as well. As I mentioned, I was just addicted to watching her on the Tony's singing "Happiness"--so beautiful and the voice to match. Marin came into my heart from that moment on.

Seemingly effortless. ❤️😢
My lord she is so beautiful.
