    NOT KEEPING TURTLES. Hey everyone, thanks for all the kind words and advice I've received after posting this video. Because I get a lot of comments because I chose to include shots of a baby turtle that just appeared one day (that I removed and put in the creek out back), I decided to try to pin this up top to let you know that i understand about turtle care and have no intention of keep them in this pond. If they were to get out and go over to the pool, they would die...and I don't want to put up barrier arounds the pond to keep them in. Surprisingly...the larger turtles can pull themselves out of the pond using the edge because I keep it filled close to the top. Anyway, thanks for caring about the well-being of turtles! I'll make sure I stay vigilant and keep them out.

      Creative Fish Studio I used to keep my water level up high, but it resulted in a couple of suicides as the koi accidentally banked themselves. Now I keep it 10 cm below the edge and it's working well

      Also I breed raise and sell only standard fin koi ( because like you I dont like butterfly fin koi as much) if you are interested let me know here and we can work it out.

      The turtle will keep coming back-you have easy dinner. If it was a red-eared slider, they are threatened in the wild. It is incredibly awesome you attracted one. They shouldn't bug your big fish.👍

      @hooktherapy  7 лет назад +6

      Thanks! It's been a year since I started the 40g reef. For the most part everything is the same....it's had some ups and downs, but it is still going. The main thing to take a hit was my corals. I'm just getting back from traveling and already am leaving for another trip. I'll try to do an update on it when I get back.

    Pro tip, you really need some shrimp and algae eaters for open sun water but especially shrimp to tend the plants and help them grow as well as eating dead fish that you don't catch.

    Just some info from my years of having my pond. If your pond is 2000 gal you really want a pump and filter that are almost double that. It will give you way clearer water and keep the water moving. Also, I used to make the mistake of turning one pump off and on but that is the main oxygenator you have so unless you put a hose into your return line which will suck in air and oxygenate your pond (Pong guru show what I mean in one of his videos) and with plants in the pond, don't turn it off especially at night or you may come out to dead fish. Looks sleek! Congrats!

      I added a water fall with a 10 foot deep cistern and let the cool water. circulate out of the cistern down the rocks. It cools the water, aerates it and adds volume to my existing pond. it was a monumental job!! lol

    Very nice job. I would highly recommend a bog system for filtration. They're simple and inexpensive. You can do it the same way you built your pond. Way more efficient and effective. Twice a year back flush the pvc pipes and that's it. Your setup is perfect for it. Make it slightly elevated so you have your desired waterfall height and overhang. Fill it with bulbs like tiger lilies, elephant ears, caladiums and at the edges of the bog where it meets your trim stone plant creeping jenny so it cascades over. It only has to be 12 inches deep, mine is deeper about 30 inches. I had the room. Crystal clear water with less hassle and cost.
    I get several turtles a year in my pond. The bigger ones eat the smaller comets. They stay about 3 days on average and move on. I used to have a racoon that showed up around dawn and would sit in the pond waiting for a gold fish to get close. He was good for a couple of fish a week.

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  Год назад +2

      I was moving in that direction. I had plans to double the length of the pond toward the fire pit and build a bog on the other side of the fence to spill into it. However, we ended up selling the house to move to Michigan.

      You're really well read on your hobby but just incase you haven't had to before when you winterize your pond in cold climates here's a few pointers that will save money and fish.
      Stop feeding them when the water temperature is 40F degrees and colder. They will hibernate. Only comets and koi will survive temps below 60F. Shubunkins will most likely die in 50F water.
      Use at least 2 got aeration outputs to keep oxygen in the water. I used 2 pond heaters ($39 a piece to prevent it from icing over. All hoses that drive water should under water completely. So they don't rupture.
      Enjoy Michigan

    So I'm using cinder blocks for the walls, then you put the pavers on top, use felt to protect the liner from the concrete. Part of the reason is hydrostatic pressure. It's a detention pond for drainage that retains water at a certain height, then floods and drains into and open well. It's cool to see the squared off look I was wanting to do. Cool job!

    Top job mate. I really like your design and setup. I recently did something similar here in Australia and had a few algae bloom issues as my pond is also in direct sunlight. I fixed it with a great natural solution. A mate of mine suggested I do a bog filter. And wow, the pond is 100% crystal clear and I have a great selection of water plants right next to it that are feed by the fish poop and Algae. So if you want to try a bog filter (easy to do after you have already put in a pond) I highly recommend it. Its basically a natural filter and there are a few good youtube DIY clips if you do a search. Anyhow, hope your pond is still going well and thanks again for the upload. Cheers CC123

    My dream is to do this with local game fish ...
    Try to put in a nice little viewing deck below ground level into the water port hole style ....
    Maybe even do a little barbless fishing on the weekends ...

    Love the pond. The pool too.😊
    I have just recorded my pond and put it on YT?
    I recorded it on my phone under in the water to see what it is like.

    It looks really nice. I like the modern clean look of it. I kind want you to put the same tiles around your pool and match the pool and pond. I’ve watched about 100 pond videos and every time I wanted them to have not used a black pond liner for their swimming pond but for the first time I wish the pool was dark, a gray stone or something. Probably won’t do all that but it would look really elegant, like you had a koi pond and a swimming pod.

      If you’re pool is plastic liner it’s totally doable. I’d put dark liner and do a stone cap in an L to go over the ledge. It would look legit

    Great job and setup! I see you have a pretty clear pool too... what I use to clarify my pond's water is the Ph- for the pool. It kill algue instantly and the fish will suck the rocks clean., and best of it it is not armful to the fish. I also like very much your water drain setup... very clever

      Thanks! So far everything is going great with it. The UV Filter actually clears the water up really well...especially considering it is in the direct sun about 6 hours. Does the PH- mess with your water chemistry or does it bring the PH back to where it needs to be?

    • @49richard
      @49richard 7 лет назад

      I did not know that you had a UV filter, which is great specially with 6 hour of sun. You can use the same water analyser kit that you use for the pool to fix your ph, knowing that the rain is more alkalyne that it use to be... I spry the area taht have algae groth with the PH- as needed and as I do I can see the algae breakup, specially the green filamented one, and they float to the surface and the fish rush in to suck the are. It does not affect the water chemistry except lower the ph. Mind you I use just what is needed to treat spot areas. Have a goos summer enjoying the pond.
