If the weather is so wet, wouldn't the moisture in the air diffuse las beams faster than they normally would, losing in effective range, thus putting them at a disadvantage (or at least not being able to leverage their advantages) against the opposing force's bullets? And just in general, wouldn't krieg korps' use of dense smoke and / or gas clouds blunt their own advance?
lipeckih A las Gun is more powerful than what we could produce, so I believe that would offset this a bit. And keep in mind, this is Technology FAR beyond our own, who knows what the Lasgun uses to focus and project the beam.
Not if the smoke is deployed against the enemy. Offensive WW1 and WW2 Tactics dictate that smoke is supposed to blind the enemy heavy weaponry while the breakthrough formations push behind them in specific areas that act as the main focal point, practically invisible.
Autoguns are not much more complicated than real world military firearms, which are designed to operate in shit conditions and are easy to maintain. The main difference is that 40k autoguns use caseless ammunition, making ammo production easier and less resource intensive as stubbers. Much of the lasguns supposed "superiority" is bullshit. The only advantages the lasgun has over the autogun is logistics, ease of training, and basic maintenance. Other than the logistical aspect, the training/maintenance issues could be overcome easily. Autoguns do have a greater chance to malfunction. But "jams" can be quickly cleared and bought back in to action by it's operator. A lasgun, being a high tech weapon requiring specialized knowledge to produce and be serviced at the armory level, would not be as simple as lore makes it out to be (moving parts notwithstanding). If a lasgun "jams", you better call the nearest techpriest. Because, other a power pack swap correcting the problem, your average dipshit guardsman better have a backup weapon handy in that situation. Then there is the matter of specialized munitions available for autoguns in 40k lore. There are even ammunition choices that can turn an autogun from being roughly equivalent in battlefield effectiveness to the Angry Flashlight, into a fucking miniature bolter. A lasgun requires, more or less, switching to an entirely different model or class if you want more punch. It comes down to these lore facts: The lasgun is logistically the ideal weapon for the Imperial Guard, who has to maintain millions, if not billions, of personnel under arms in a standing army spanning the galaxy. And despite the jokes, the lasgun isn't an ineffective weapon. But as far as which weapon is a better as a tactical weapon, then the autogun wins hands down.

a note on the Lasgun's power. It's actually more powerful than the Autogun. there's only one reference I have for this though, in the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer. It mentions the Lasrifle operates at the 19 Megathule range. Given 40k's use of swapping words out, we can safely assume they mean Megajoule. This means the chargepack must contain a potential of dealing out 19 megajoules of energy. The standard chargepack has 80-100 shots. this means that 19 Mj gets dissipated evenly, unless its a backwater charge pack. This works out to 316 Kilo-joules of energy released PER SHOT. All of this hits you in an area no bigger than a finger point. For comparison a .50BMG hits with 10-12,000 JOULES of energy. this makes the Lasbolt THOUSANDS of times more powerful. MIND YOU the BMG hits with Kinetic energy, and the lasrife hits with directed energy. an Autogun is entirely outclassed by the Lasrifle in every conceivable way except for ONE. Penetration. The Lasrifle's energy will try to dissipate the MOMENT contact is made. It will burn away the top layer and then all that's bellow. With enough time the beam will shoot through anything, but the Solid bullet can just punch on through. Just something to think about
Given 40K's love of the Latin language, it's worth noting that "thule" means "most distant" in Latin. It's very probable that a megathule is a measurement not of power per shot, but of effective range.
@@stephenwood6663 I thought that too. But thats too on the nose for GW. When they do latin its horribly pigish lattin. Like Munitorio, or Lectititio Divinitatus. Never proper latin
@@YaboitheCadian Really, it seems to vary wildly depending on author. While you *do* get basically meaningless phrases like "Lectitio Divinatus", I remember there was an old piece of art of a Guard sergeant with "astra castra Imperium lustrum" graffitied on his shoulderpad (that's "the stars are my camp, the Imperium my light"). The Ciaphas Cain series also has a lot of good Latin, which it mostly uses for stealth jokes - for example, there's a company-scale landing ship called the Avis Tonitrus Duo ("Thunderbird Two").
I would like to point that primer shows a guardsmen grabbing a Ork by the wrist to beat them in hand to hand combat... It's has a lot if propaganda in it.
Imperial guard regiments comes from the pdfs elité and were equipped as their were from their time in the pdf. Furthermore pdf can have mixed forces while IG regiments tend to be one type of unit like a leman russ regiment an infantry regiment and so on
Hmmm... Where should we put this penal colony? I got it. Let's put it on this planet that's extremely defendable (except for internal uprisings), with a huge armory and a shitload of discontent slaves. What could possibly go wrong?
If I had to guess, it's because good Imperial citizens are... discouraged from knowing too much about, or looking too closely at, the symbols of the Ruinous Powers. Doing so has been known to change people. I would guess that very few of the Vraksians understood the true significance of the "symbols of the revolution".
You could just go to Lexicanum and look up the Vraks campaign. Arch didn't go too much into detail because he wants to avoid spoilers to how nasty the Vraks war gets.
I'm interested in why the star of chaos is on the uniforms of the defenders (at least in the art in the video) - Im no expert on 40K lore, did all the defenders fall to chaos?
If we are talking about table top autoguns. The massive amount of different ammo an autoguns can use. I would take that over a lasgun any day of the weak. Yes the lasgun has the nice effect of never jamming and having the fact their power cells are rechargeable. Their flexabillity is limited.
Isn't it weird that he speaks of "the autohun" as if it were a single, standardized model? For every characteristic he ascribed "the autohun" I can think of a modern rifle or submachinegun that overcomes it
Well I just spent a decent Chuck of time comparing the gun used on vraks( actually the only one with any actual stats on wikis) to the lsat carbine( I am Americans and converts to customary) Autogun Weighs 13.77 pounds Overall length 43 inches Barrel 21 inches Caliber 8.25 long 20 to 30 round box magazine ( most autogun seem only hold 12 round on average, with one model with just 8 rounds. There is also one with drum magazine with 40 rounds) Muzzle velocity 2706 ft per sec ( Next I took grain from 7.92 rounds and scale them up a bit. Just guessing though really) using a 200 grain bullet 3252 pounds per foot muzzle energy if using 240 grain bullet 3899 pounds per foot muzzle energy LSAT carbine 9.7 pounds( note this is the current weight in prototype stage will probably lower) Overall length 29 inches Barrel length 14.5 inches 6.5 mm (Now I am using creedmoor and Grendel rounds as 6.5 used here are based off one or the other. Note Grendel was design for 600 meters and creedmoor for 1,000 meters) 20 round box magazine 6.5 Grendel has average 1800 pounds for foot muzzle energy Muzzle velocity somewhere between 1600 to 1900 feet per sec 6.5 creedmoor has less rounds so just going to use the 120 grain with muzzle velocity of 3,020 feet per second for a muzzle energy of 2,430 pounds per foot. Now we might have round with insane muzzle energy vs our modern ammo, but the 8.25 round is insanely heavy, and and lose that energy much sooner than our modern round here. As such more at distance the 6.5 Grendel could match very well. While creedmoor will almost certainly surpass it. Such only time this energy counts is close combat, but the round 8.25 has control issues in fully automatic. The Grendel isn't too much worse than the standard 5.56 round. Honestly, I would rather use . 6.5 Grendel.
@@malkavianstr450way I would prefer to keep the orks as far as way as possible, and put a lot more rounds downrange, with explosive tips. Makes me wonder why the imperia never thought of investing into a LMG like weapon. I mean they got HMGs, but no lmgs to serve on the platoon level.
@@joshuawilliams9020 tbf, that assumes they have readily available LMGs that serve adequately for the task. They probably don't- LMGs probably have much more intensive material requirements and maintenance compared to a lasgun. Also, innovation is heresy, so...

Oh, boy. Can’t wait to hear how “pleasantly” surprised Imperials were when they poped out of the Warp
I'm drunk at the moment nice video arch
This is awesome, thank you Arch
Imperial guard regiments comes from the pdfs elité and were equipped as their were from their time in the pdf. Furthermore pdf can have mixed forces while IG regiments tend to be one type of unit like a leman russ regiment an infantry regiment and so on
Well had a shitty day at work but a surprise arch video makes it worth it.
Hmmm... Where should we put this penal colony? I got it. Let's put it on this planet that's extremely defendable (except for internal uprisings), with a huge armory and a shitload of discontent slaves. What could possibly go wrong?
I had one of my teeth pulled this should help me ignore the dull feeling in my jaw
Try five at once.....i bled all day and night
I gotta get four pulled on Monday. .-.
Well this made my Wednesday morning all the better
I suppose the answer to "Why are the cardinal's men scrawled head to foot in Chaos emblems?" is upcoming.
+Arch Warhammer I really like how a description of the garrison is accompanied with pictures of chaos heretics. Is this a foreshadowing? -_-
Ever thought of making a series on the Sabbat Crusade?
Always wanted to start a renegade guard army to go with my Krieg collection. Too bad the official Forge World ones are out of print now.
Loved it, thanks Arch!
Arch, never stop doing 40k lore videos.
Praise the good emperor
I was having a bad day until now. My thanks Lord Inquisitor Chapter Master Arch!
12 incher shovel is all they need
Thanks daddy Arch for giving us more lore
I love the siege of Vraks lore.
So did the traitors actually look as.... Chaosy as that?
lore in the middle of the week?
praise the emperor!
I’m confused, why do they look like they worship chaos when they follow the cardinal who is meant to be this divine man that follows the emperor..?
If I had to guess, it's because good Imperial citizens are... discouraged from knowing too much about, or looking too closely at, the symbols of the Ruinous Powers. Doing so has been known to change people.
I would guess that very few of the Vraksians understood the true significance of the "symbols of the revolution".
You could just go to Lexicanum and look up the Vraks campaign. Arch didn't go too much into detail because he wants to avoid spoilers to how nasty the Vraks war gets.
Because, foolish mortal, the God Emperor is a chaos God now! Mwahahaha
I'm interested in why the star of chaos is on the uniforms of the defenders (at least in the art in the video) - Im no expert on 40K lore, did all the defenders fall to chaos?
Keep em' coming Arch!
Why does the PDF soldier picture have the eight-pointed star on it?!
My thought exactly
;)
A sign of things to come.
@@d5hadow858 is that some heretical foreshadowing? am I going two need to bolters for this?
@@captainpuffinpuffinson4769 The Ruinous Powers show a great many things to those with the proper insight.
How could you not talk about the tortured and surgically altered berserker Ogryns while teasing us with a picture of one?
I fully expect a 5 hour video at the end of this series.
Who says nothing good ever happens on a Wednesday?
If we are talking about table top autoguns. The massive amount of different ammo an autoguns can use. I would take that over a lasgun any day of the weak. Yes the lasgun has the nice effect of never jamming and having the fact their power cells are rechargeable. Their flexabillity is limited.
I enjoy your content. Algorithm satisfied.
I think I fought this very cardinal in Clive Barker's Jericho.
Fantastic Arch!
Very subtle to have pictures of the armies of the cardinal be chaos warriors I was assuming that they would fall to the ruinous powers but come on
Isn't it weird that he speaks of "the autohun" as if it were a single, standardized model? For every characteristic he ascribed "the autohun" I can think of a modern rifle or submachinegun that overcomes it
Well I just spent a decent Chuck of time comparing the gun used on vraks( actually the only one with any actual stats on wikis) to the lsat carbine( I am Americans and converts to customary)
Autogun
Weighs 13.77 pounds
Overall length 43 inches
Barrel 21 inches
Caliber 8.25 long
20 to 30 round box magazine ( most autogun seem only hold 12 round on average, with one model with just 8 rounds. There is also one with drum magazine with 40 rounds)
Muzzle velocity 2706 ft per sec
( Next I took grain from 7.92 rounds and scale them up a bit. Just guessing though really)
using a 200 grain bullet 3252 pounds per foot muzzle energy
if using 240 grain bullet
3899 pounds per foot muzzle energy
LSAT carbine
9.7 pounds( note this is the current weight in prototype stage will probably lower)
Overall length 29 inches
Barrel length 14.5 inches
6.5 mm
(Now I am using creedmoor and Grendel rounds as 6.5 used here are based off one or the other. Note Grendel was design for 600 meters and creedmoor for 1,000 meters)
20 round box magazine
6.5 Grendel has average 1800 pounds for foot muzzle energy
Muzzle velocity somewhere between 1600 to 1900 feet per sec
6.5 creedmoor has less rounds so just going to use the 120 grain with muzzle velocity of 3,020 feet per second for a muzzle energy of 2,430 pounds per foot.
@@joshuawilliams9020 Stopping power against charging Orks.
@@joshuawilliams9020 the autogun's rounds are so much heavier they can only reach about 12"
@@malkavianstr450way I would prefer to keep the orks as far as way as possible, and put a lot more rounds downrange, with explosive tips.
Also, innovation is heresy, so...
no more brother wars
26:36 sounds like a death korp troopers wet dream to me
Scientifically speaking, a lasgun should have no recoil. Well...no kinetic recoil anyways. A laser weapon would produce recoil in the form of heat, not kick.
Good video Arch
Thats a lot of shovel fodder.
