Them lingering on Bob being eaten WAS necessary. It was the writer's/director's response to so many pfans believing Barb was still alive. They wanted no question about Bob.

This show has completely spoiled me when it comes to child actors at this point. Like, everybody in this is great and just makes you care for these characters; and now I just have to compare every other movie and show to this.
That moment in the Byers' shed and Eleven returning have to be some of the best stuff on television right now. The expressions one everybody's faces is enough to make you understand exactly what everyone is feeling, without the need for words. When Will starts turning from expressionless stare to almost crying; and then Mike's smile when he sees El... Urghh! I can never watch that without tearing up.
Another brilliant show with brilliant actors is Anne With An E

And I'm pretty sure the lingering "Bob Buffet" shot was just to make sure they didn't get all the fan theories of him coming back like with all the Barb theories. Which I never really understood, even though they showed her corpse with a slug coming out of her.

MystikalScope Productions There is a possibility that the limitation is Sean, himself. Maybe he enjoys lending his name to projects he enjoys to help them get off the ground before moving on. I would have liked to see more of Bob, but "Bob Newby, superhero" will have a long shelf life.

They basically showed Bob being eaten 'cause all the fans were soooooo convinced that Barb was somehow still alive even after a freakin' slug thing came out of her mouth in the void scene, so I supposed they felt like that could happen again if they didn't confirm it with a stronger, more *final* visual. :P
Also, for those (in the comments) saying the show is predictable... I beg to differ, 'cause in most reaction videos I've seen, many of the reactors' predictions are either wrong, or kinda misdirected. So, I think Stranger Things is a wonderful example of a show using twists, not for the sake of shock-value, but just because they know people will have certain expectations. And either way, just because you think something is gonna happen, and then it does, that doesn't make the writing bad (or you any smarter than the writers), but rather it makes the storytelling that much more comprehensive 'cause the writers lay out details that then you as an audience member are able to pick up throughout the story. :D
Given that we learned Papa might still be alive, we had to see Bob eaten to KNOW he's dead. Otherwise people would speculate that he survived some how...

Honestly I binged this season just like last season and I still didn't understand how people didn't like some parts of this season xD just so fuckin' good
I enjoyed Season 2. Didn't really like most of Episode 7 if I'm honest, but I enjoyed it overall. I think the reason a lot of fans weren't too impressed is because Season 1 was a kind of cultural phenomenon that came out of nowhere. It had genuine mystery. You had no idea where Will was, if he was "alive" in any sense of alive. You didn't know anything about the upside down, why Will seems to be communicating through lights. There was the mystery of the Hawkins Lab and of Eleven's abilities. Season 1 also had genuinely spine-tinging creepy moments, like when the demogorgon follows Will home and he sees him through the window in the distance, or when the door was unlocked from outside etc. In fact, the first 8 minutes of Season 1 of Stranger Things was creepier and scarier than the ENTIRE of Season 2 combined.
The Shadow Monster didn't have the same everpresent threat as the demogorgon, it was more of a distant threat. The demogorgon scenes in Season 1 were pretty good. That creepy fucker could smell your blood from the upside down and crawl through his own gates to snatch your ass and take you back into the upside. Also, the way it led Holly down the corridor to Will's bedroom with the lights was creepy as hell.
Season 2 wasn't that mysterious. The biggest questions were answered right away. Where's Eleven? Oh she's with Hopper.. well OK then. What about the bad people at the lab, aren't they going to get revenge? Oh.. they're all gone and there's a likeable guy there now. Etc. Also, nothing much really happens in terms of action until the final 2 episodes. Most of the season is dedicated to character development, relationships and such.
I don't think many ST fans didn't like it outright, they were just a bit underwhelmed and maybe concerned about the future direction of the show. Episode 7 might have given us a clue as to where it goes from here, and if it did, I don't think it will hold its status for very long. I mean how many shows have been done at this point about people with varieties of special powers? Heroes, the 4400 and so on. Do we really need yet another one? Etc.
Also, the writing was a bit all over the place this season. There are a few weak points / kinda plot holes here and there. Like in Ep 7, Kali talks about how they have been hunting down and killing the bad men who hurt her. We see they have a whole wall filled with pictures and information on them. They are actively trying to track them down... but wait... Kali knows they worked in the Hawkins Lab! So why not just go to the lab, use her powers to sneak them in and kill them all? I mean.. did nobody point this out at a table read of the script? It seems a fairly major oversight to me.
But ye I've written enough.
I think they stuck with Bob getting eaten so long so no one would ask is Bob will be back in Season 3, like people did with Barb in season 1.
Does that mean we're getting episode 9 early?? That'd be the best Christmas present ever lol

I still get emotional I've seen the ending 30 times.
I am always baffled that everyone instantly assumes its Ele opening the door. (even though it was) If we go back to the first season Wills door was opened (and Ele clearly wasn't there) So the demigorgans definitely have the power to unlock things as well (at least the full grown ones)
British Zombie End of ep 7, she was headed back to save them. So it was more than just wishful thinking.
To be fair, it's because the show is VERY predictable. I mean this was a powerful moment because of their reactions to her and hers to Mike, but it was a surprise to almost nobody. Had they managed to make her return more of a surprise, this would have been a legendary moment in TV.
I was honestly afraid that they might be pulling something with it. I usually try to expect unexpected things.
I think they made a mistake showing Eleven opening doors like that previously in the season. If they hadn't done that, it might have been more of a surprise to people when they saw her.
The moment gets better and leaves a bigger cliffhanger if you watch ep 7 and 8 in different order.
Then you see el entering with her badass clothes and next ep will be the backstory of why she's wearing the clothes and where she has been
Perfect way to end my day.

Chris saying it’s his fav show ever validated a suspicion I had when he was super quick to defend an episode when someone said it was kinda slow in the middle and chris was like, “slow where?” without hesitation. I remember binging the fuck out of this show, being completely glued to my screen well after sunrise and having no regrets.
Fun fact, the guy who played Bob wanted to have a really brutal death scene. There's a cut out shot where he vomits up blood as he's being eaten
People always freak out when Bob leaves the gun behind, but do you really think it would have helped him?! The demo-dogs shrug off rounds from an assault rifle. What good is a 9mm pistol wielded by an untrained computer nerd?

This show has so many scenes that remind me of The 100 lol, for instance:
- When Hopper and Joyce found will in the upside down and they had to do cpr and hopped beat on his chest // Bellamy in Gabriels tent after Clarke and Josephine have their battle in s6 and Bellamy beats on her chest to get her to wake up
- Will tapping Morse code on the chair to communicate to hopper while the mind Flayer is in control //// Clarke tapping A-L-I-V-E in Morse code on her arm to tell Bellamy she’s still alive inside her head while Josephine is in control of her body
- and there’s another one I can’t remember rn

I dont know if TWD's Dale's death and pan-out was exactly the same, but Bob's vacant stare into a pan-out camera reminded me of that. With the demogordons acting like the zombies tesring their stomachs out.
I think they focused so much on Bobs death because when Barb died everyone thought she was alive, so they had to show that Bobs actually dead.
I knew the moment Bob left the gun in that room that it was all over for him. But they were probably already going to kill him off at some point anyways.

The most heartbreaking thing imo about Bob's death is that they delay it---like he doesn't get attacked or killed in a random hallway, or while he's completing his mission or anything. No, they let him get to the door and let the viewers have hope before destroying us

To be fair, guns don't seem to have much effect on demidogs, so I doubt his leaving the gun made any difference. He was dead the minute he knocked over the mop no matter what.

I've seen the whole show before and I still cried during this reaction. Maybe there are flaws, but I haven't seen them. I think it's one of the best shows there is.

I'm sad they didn't include one of the best scenes in the entire series, which is Joyce and Jonathan and Mike trying to reach Will.
Also yes, it absolutely is one of the best shows to ever have existed and I cannot understand how people can even say that season 2 (or 3) isn't every bit as amazing as 1. There's only one show that I can say with certainty is better than ST and that's saying a lot.

Yeah y’all are right abt the crying stuff. Mike(Finn) even said on an interview that he has trouble crying on command, so they give him something to put in his eyes that make him cry.
Where is the girl in the red sweater from? Her accent is so beautiful. Maybe a Deutsch speaking country? I really liked her input about the universality of the show and how it doesn't ride on just the nostalgia of 1980s American pop culture.

when the camera was panning to Bob lying on the floor, I blurted out "the eagles are here" and it was funny, until I cried. lol.
Bob the real Super Hero
I have no problem with Bob leaving the gun. But I do have a problem with how Bob died. He just stops and stares at the person he loves while a fucking monster bangs against the door behind him? And then they pull a "T-Rex out a nowhere" and have a demidog jump on him from out of the shadows. What, nobody saw the deadly demon dog in the room with them? His death just felt so contrived.
And I do think this season has problems. Characters not communicating to each other, keeping certain characters apart, episode seven - look, I don't hate this episode, but I don't like it either. To me, it feels more concerned with setting up season 3 than dealing with the here and now. And it does interrupt the flow of the story. Yeah, yeah. I don't matter as much if you're binging it... but it still grinds the story, which was really picking up steam, to a halt - but, for me at least, none of these problems affect my enjoyment of this season. I think it is just as good as season 1, but its more uneven and the highs are higher and the lows are lower.
