Mitsubishi Triton GSR 2024 review: Is the new 4x4 dual-cab pick-up a better buy than Ford Ranger?

- The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton has to wear a lot of hats. The mid-size ute has evolved over now six generations, during which it's become than just a humble workhouse. Point being, range-topping versions, like the GSR 4x4 dual-cab pick-up on test here, also have to balance adventure and family duties.
It's no surprise, then, that the Japanese brand has thrown the proverbial kitchen sink at the new Triton GSR, with it shaping up as a serious rival for the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, Toyota HiLux Rouge and Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain on paper. Case in point: it ushers a 2.4-litre twin-turbo diesel four-cylinder engine with more power and torque than its single-turbo predecessor.
At the same time, the next-gen Triton GSR also has a redesigned interior that's more driver and family friendly than before - but does it go far enough? In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Emily Agar and her family of three spend a week living with it to find out.

Please note the maximum power output mentioned at 5:12 is incorrect. It's actually 150kW. Apologies for any confusion.
Good to see nice straight forward honest review
150KW
Great review👍
Great looking ute. Definitely on the 2025 shopping list. Thankd for the honest, straight forward review.
Looks so good. Hopefully the Pajero Sport maintains its tough look
Great work mate 8
10 years warranty wow very nice pretty good handling stability manuvering cornering experience
I wish Australian brand devisions would realise that not everyone wants the shiny black wheels and ebay flares. Its not just Mitsubishi.
If you want the premium interior but prefer the simpler and more elegant exterior you're out of luck.
Premium interiors come with the eBay special exteriors.
The alerts would do my head in , I’m not turning them off every time I start the car
Seem to have done ok with the redesign with lots of improvements over the previous model, which I own.
Excellent review! This car would be ideal for those new to camping and light off-roading (like me), allowing them to access locations that are difficult or impossible to reach with a standard 2WD vehicle. Also, budget friendly. I have shortlisted Navara and this one.
Thank you for simple to use interior nothing fancy. Not everyone want complicated tech.
Looking forward to the Pajero Sport variant.
Great review, i like the rugged looks of the new triton, the suspension is tuned to be on the softer side for a comfortable ride especially on Bumpy roads.
The offroad performance is also amazing
There is full time awd in the triton , the only other utes in the same class with full time awd is the v6 models of the ranger and amarok.
The triton has good fuel economy
Also the addition of Ad blue will be coming to all future models of ford and toyota, so it wont only be a triton thing. Ad blue is already installed in the new ford everest
It is also coming to the new prado
Based on direct price comparison I reckon this should really be compared to the GWM Cannon Alpha, especially the hybrid version.
Was excited but that camera that looks at you all the time would be annoying. Why aren't these car companies doing something about ancap. Having a camera telling you of for doing a head check to make sure it's clear to either take of or merge.
It's to get the 5 star rating for ancap , what Mitsubishi should have done is allow you to permanently disable the camera until you change your battery or something.
Soon enough all new models will have this camera as well as ad blue you will see
“Going to appeal to old schoolers” nothing more to say…
How much does it share with the navara ?
Nothing. This is an entirely new chassis. This platform is what Nissan will be using for the next gen Navara. Mitsubishi took the lead with this, while sharing other componentry with Nissan. The Engine, chassis and drivetrain is Mitsubishi. There's nothing on the new Triton that is related to the older model or a current Navara - some might argue that the new 4N16 motor is just the previous triton 4N15 motor with an extra Turbo, in some aspects yes (architecture), but its a completely re-worked motor to utilize the twin turbo setup, with upgraded internals and valves that no longer need adjusting.
@@Mochabear85 Phew.... the current Navara doesn't seem to be that good compared to the Triton... Thanks ..
@@thomasdobson3823 A colleague of mine has a Navara (although a 2019 model) and they really haven't done much with it since release, apart from a few additional items inside and out along with updated styling. They are quite lethargic things (heaps of people get them tuned now), and have felt pretty dated like the older MQ/MR Triton. Well overdue for an update. There are a couple of minor things the new Triton shares inside the cabin with other Nissan products, but it doesn't make it feel dated. I've gone from a Ranger to the new GSR and honestly can't fault it. Amazing on fuel too
You had me at 170kw 😂
Pretty sures it's 150kw, not 170!
@@craigharrop2756 yeah I know but as soon as she said 170 I said I’ll buy one just to be disappointed later 😂
A review without mentioning the ranger 50 times. Ford sponsored carsales should take note
U might change ur mind after u see it lined up with other ute.
Didnt answer the question compared to a Ford, Toyota or Isuzu....
BYD sharks
“A truckie ride” well given it’s a commercial vehicle, what did you expect ?
Is this channel run by the Greens political party?
love your review, however, that's an ugly pickup!
U might change ur mind after u see it lined up with other ute
Doesn’t Mitsubishi have a design team? Awfully ugly
are you blind perchance?
No but their clueless design team obviously is
