Self insure you can afford it. These companies always find a way to wiggle out of paying. I bought a tv at Best Buy awhile back and they tried selling me a two year warranty. I told her the tv already has a one year warranty so I’d be buying a one year warranty. She was so confused. I told her when my manufacturer warranty expires I’ll be back for the two year. These people think we’re stupid and try to nickel and dime us to death

I remember Clark saying. Buy a manufacturers warranty extension only if you feel it’s necessary. Now days with the complex of modern vehicles. Yes it can get expensive to repair depending on what it is most important to do your home work first ! Read it make sure you know what is covered. Wear idems are not covered.

I don’t think I would ever get it on a new vehicle, if something weird is going to go wrong with the vehicle is likely to happen early in its life. I bought a used Ford in 2014 on a 2012 model, was still good for three more years.
I have never purchased an extended warranty.
However, in late 2019 my son bought a 2016 Ford escape, with a four year loan, so there were less than two years left on the original warranty. he did buy the extended warranty through Ford, for an additional three years. They came up with a couple coupons and it was less than $1000. In summer 2022, He didn’t owe much left on the car, but the transmission went. It was covered in full. I think he had to lay out $44 or something for something that wasn’t part of the warning. It was less than 50 bucks for a $4000 job.
Agree with the poster only through the manufacturer. These car shield things are rip off.

Depends on manufacture. Honda and Toyota yep, their warranty is great. Hyundai their warranty is not as good.
Here's why, under warranty Hyundai replaced the ignition coils and that is all. This means that they will put the old spark plugs in the new coils because the warranty does not cover the plugs. Honda, Toyota, and probably a few others will automatically replace those items associated as part of the warranty replacement. My Honda example is the boot/CV joint on my front right brought about the additional replacement on the left too at no cost. So if after reading this you buy a Hyundai just know that nice warranty they praise has big problems that will cost you more.

When we bought our Honda CrV right before the pandemic started we were going to get a slightly used one but found the prices for new ones were not much less and they had so many electronics in them it was scary to get something used, or something new without a warranty. We used the Costco car buying program and got a discount on the car and the warranty. Thankfully haven’t had anything go bad, and haven’t put many miles on it due to pandemic.

Was a time a vehicle could be totally dismantled and put back together with nothing more than what the normal person would have at their home. Today, if one attempts that, the vehicle will never get running again. They must have special computers and equipment for testing that costs more than most people can hope to afford and if they try to get it the requirements for using them will make it so that most people could not understand what is being told or how to perform stated operations.

Stop calling it a warranty. Shame on the industry for perpetuating this. A warranty/guarantee means they will take care of defects in manufacturing or installation. Paying for them to provide future repairs is simply prepaid repairs.

Manufacturer's extended warranty - aren't they typically cancellable with prorated money back for the time you didn't use? So there's that if someone wants to sell the car early...

Yes, I have done this twice. The prorated portion was about $1200 when I sold a two year old car.

I get 60 percent or such from unused warranty from Tractor Supply if I don't use it on new lawn mower I recently bought. I normally never buy warranties

It costs a lot more when you buy than when you don't.
Be smart put the money aside every month that you would pay for an extended service contract (they are not warranties) and put it in a high interest savings account. You have it if you need and, better, you have it if you don't need it.

No. I recently bought a new car and the finance guy tried to sell me on a 3rd-party extended warranty that was over $3800. Nope, not good. After research, I found a reputable (if that’s even possible) extended warranty for $1700 and it covers 10 years/120K miles…car currently has 1700 miles on it.
