A freefall-qualified military jumper was transitioning to civilian skydiving through the MFF Transition Program. Having prior training on ripcord-equipped gear, the student forgot his new training (throw and let go of the pilot chute) and reverted to his old training instead (hold on to the ripcord through the deployment process). The outcome was a cutaway and reserve deployment while still holding the ripc-, err, pilot chute in his hand.
When it comes to transitioning to new systems and gear, practicing pilot chute pulls on the ground is critical for a successful and safe transition.

Love how he tosses the cutaway handle straight away while still holding the pilot chute.
😂😂😂 dont get it either, he remembered to trow smth at least
I think it might be caught on his ring maybe?
I mean, it says in the description that rip cord jumping is different and he was transitioning, so he went back to his original training, by accident.
I know you can become attached to your gear but sometimes you just have to let go
😂😂😂😂😂
Well played dude 👌
Ahahahahahah belter
Devon Holmes dude, funny story you just reminded me of.
When we first bought this Japanese Mitsubishi 4x4 for our gliding school it came with all Japanese settings on the radio, and the Frozen CD stuck inside of the player.
Our courses run for ten days, and for the first two courses until one of our students somehow got the cd out I had ten guys singing ‘let it go, let it gooo’ for 20 fucking days straight haha
I almost forgot about that hahaha
Epic =)))))))))))))
Nothing like creating a malfunction where there isn’t one.
Kkkkkkk..
So right!! If he would have reached for the cutaway he would have got opening before he could chop. Wonder how he handled two canopies out?? That instructor should have stayed on him. He burned through a grand before he dumped the reserve. Not sure how the instructor got his rating!! Next time stay out of the parking lot! Glad the dude didn't bounce
@Adam Barlow , I've probably been jumping longer than you've been alive!! Started in 1982, world champion, in the Guinness Book of World Records so yes I do know what I'm talking about!!! You might check your shit before you start opening up your shit!! I'll meet you any day and show you what it's all about unless you a chicken shit!! You tell me when and where and it's on!! Check with USPA on my back ground unless you still wear diapers!!!
Play nice boys... it seemed to me like there was reserve pilot chute hesitation, very lucky the reserve didnt entangle w his main bridle.
And if he did student Emer. Procedures correct, he should have used his right hand to cutaway, therefore releasing P.C....and chances are he still would have cutaway the main. This was scary AF. But IMO the instructor did the right thing. If he tried to rush in and fix the problem that low and got tangled, they both would have been dead.
No pissing contest, just my opinion! Blue skies my brothers!
Correction lol...he did cutaway with right hand and still didnt release PC. I've officially seen it all
I thought he was going to pull a rabbit out next.
ahahahahahahahahahahaha
nicedog1 😂😂😂😂
LMAO
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA
HAHAHAHAHA
Now I’ve seen everything, this occurrence never even entered my mind.
He was prior military freefall and was conditioned to hold the ripcord
@@bigblue207 I've done quite a few military-to-civilian transition trainings. It IS a big problem, one that requires a lot of retraining.
Would love to have seen the debrief on this one
Start of the debrief: First:You had a realy fast reaction for your reserve because you main wasent deploing. "Thank you what was the secound"
Secoundly: you d**** F**** havent you fn thought about f*** release the da** main chute
😅🤙🏼
Cringe
Bwaahahahaa, it would be like " this is a throw out, not a hold out"..lol
I bet the debrief started with those immortal words "FFS".
He looks so proud holding the pilot chute
Bro! 😳 Whatching that reserve pilot chute dance in the burble with the bridle of the main in slow motion sent chills up my spine!
Jordan Tehero I have ZERO jumps under my belt but that will soon change as I'm a licensed professional pilot that is about to become Aerobatic certified as it's been a childhood dream of mine. When doing Aero you are REQUIRED to wear a chute so I will be jumping often. That way if that day actually comes there is zero hesitation and 100 percent concentration. And that scared the shit out of ME lol
DutchGreen Gaming Uhhhh, not like that. People have done parachuteless jumps with some sort of rigging system to hook into with plenty of altitude. There's noway the instructor could do that.
There's a recorded incident of a skydiver jumping without his rig on accidentally. No one else noticed it on the plane...once they all noticed in freefall, they tracked like their lives depended on it, because they did. I was told if he was able to grab a hold of someone they both would have died. I heard that story from a respected instructor. Moral, check your gears THREE times before jumping. Complacency KILLS!
Blue Skies!
@@KeepinYouUp07 So they discarded him or what?
That’s legit my ultimate fear in this, so far so good tho 👍🏻
Can you imagine him with the Handgranate?
Not for very long 💀
The guy actually did a really good jump, he just needs to work on letting go of his pilot chute.
Yes, but you can't expect him to know EVERYTHING at once, he is a student after all.
PhobosAnomaly he was prior military freefall and just used to holding into the ripcord
No shit? -Sherlock!
@@ThePhobosAnomally i dont even fucking jump and i know the pilot chute pulls out the main chute this little fuck almost killed himself
@@bigblue207 this is actually an issue that they're currently dealing with in MFF. Most the afsw dudes have switched to boc, but some of the older dudes have been doing the same thing in the switch to boc, not releasing their pilot chute
That’s like when Homer Simpson got his hand stuck in the vending machine, all he had to do was let go of the candy bar.
Rose: *Don't let go Jack*
Jack: *I'll never let go....even when I cutaway*
Billbo88 bahahaha
he let go of the cutaway handle though. It's gone. $15
He's like "dafuq why am I still free falling?"
punkypine lol 😂
Hhaahahahhaah
Yea while looking at the instructor smiling 😂😂
This happens when you leave your rig with your ex wife and she puts super bonder glue on the hackey
Alvarezgen omg 😂
:))) u are nuts:)))))))))
Thats fucked up, man.
I read The coment and i laugh like a idiot :)))))))
True!
Dude did his cutaway and reserve while still holding onto his pilot chute. This is next level lol
I seen the same thing. Hopefully he landed ok. Jesus 💀
You would think someone that’s on coach jumps and can track, dock, roll and turn would know that he has to let go of his pilot chute for it to work.
The lesson here: old habits die hard!
This is a literal guy, and I’m sure they didn’t specifically explain that after he deploys he needs to release the pilot chute.
He was just 100% following the instructions as he had understood them to the letter.
It’s just a reminder that what seems obvious to us might not be obvious to everyone.
This is not a literal guy. He was a freefall-qualified military jumper transitioning to civilian skydiving. He reverted to his old training to hold on to the ripcord through the deployment process.
Wow, his aerial form seemed very controlled for a student who couldn't remember to let go of his pilot chute. The description below the video made sense of that discrepancy.
When i went through AFF 10 years ago the guy that taught me told me "throw it like it is that rattle snake you saw while walking up in here"
After i had a dozen or jumps i asked him why he always made a big deal about throwing it. I guess this is why, people freeze up and hold onto it hahah
They tell you to throw it hard so it doesn't hangout in the burble like the reserve pilot chute did it needs air to inflate
He didn’t freeze up he was prior military and used to holding the ripcord
@@bigblue207I saw you comment that like five different times . Military conditioning or not he fucked up n that’s on him bud
@@dylanmounsey7515I never said it wasn’t. People just seem quick to assume he’s a new AFF student or something that has no idea what he’s doing when that’s not the case. It’s one of the cancerous qualities of the skydiving community, that people like to ridicule others who make mistakes instead of correcting them. If it’s bad enough, sure because this is a sport where little mistakes result in death, but at the same time if you’re going to continue supporting it despite the risk then your best bet is to help educate people instead of discouraging them from looking like an idiot or something.
@@bigblue207 well he was solo from his instructor so he was at least 4 or 5 jumps into AFF which means he deployed correctly previously. This was him having brain freeze.
He might have to do that AFF jump over again
Frank Aguanno 😂
Omg 😂 just maybe 🤔
I hope not :)
Except for the forgotten throw-away, there is nothing to complain about. The jump and the reserve procedure looks good, especially for a 6th-jumps-student. Hell, he is even stable when both cutting the main and pulling the reserve. Shit, I've got 500+ jumps and I don't know if I would pull my reserve calm and stable like that.
I agree! Horrible situation but the EP sequence is spot on.
He’s probably military. That’s what I’m assuming.
Read the description, military free fall conversion to sport jumping. To me the really issue is ok he thinks it's a ripcord and keeps it but where does he think the main is after all that time.
@@antipropo461 maybe he thought he was container locked
I could see this happening to an old school jumper. Someone who was trained to pull a main ripcord. Forgetting throw out and let go.
I can only imagine that this is the very reason. This video imo shows that students should not train on one system and then swop to another. It's actually drilled into you to hold onto he ripcord. Student reacted well in pulling the reserve but it looked like the two pilot chutes almost got entangled. That's game over
Gotta love the number of people who don’t read the damn description for these videos. The whole point is to learn from other people’s mistakes. How the hell can you learn if you have no idea what actually happened...
We had the same shit with a student at our drop zone. After a while he let the rip cord go, cuted away and pulled the reserve. 🤦🏻♂️😂
And on the evening: Beer, beer, beer, lovely lovely beer... 😂
@@MisterIvyMike at a dz I use to stay at as a kid there was a white board with who owes a carton. I remember seeing someone up to like 30 cartons. I wonder what they did.
This is what happens when you've been jumping on a ripcord and dont want to get a beer fine for loosing it...... just let go.... I kept saying to myself
Dozens of malfunction videos and injuries that I've seen, I think this beats them all. The last option was teetering on hopelessness. How do you not notice that pilot chute flapping around in your peripheral? I held on to every one of my rip cords and shoved them into a pocket (my instructor said I could trash the rip cords if I wanted), I was so psyched when I was able to pull the big boy throw out. Coaches should emphasize new info as best they can, for they might get a little lax with bro - to - bro interaction, to not come off as insulting their bro student's intelligence. Know when to get serious, know when to help your student relax.
Ripcord? My first tandem and Duanesburg New York, had a ripcord. When did you skydive? In the 80s?
Guy is a military transition trainer hes used to having a ripchord for the main... they are used to not letting go
Why do they not let go?
Nikola Grujicic The jumper should hang on to the handles😤 because a ripcord is made.of a metal handle, a cable and a pin that opens the parachute container when pulled by the jumper. Ripcords are reusable and expensive to replace.
Plus it could have someone’s eye out if it hit them in the face when they were looking up. 👍😳😳
I transitioned from a ripcord to a throw out, and they charged me for letting go and losing the ripcord! Prolly some training issue where he trained to not drop it.
helpdeskjnp I don’t think so? I progressed from ripcord to throwaway and didn’t need to be told to let go of the pilot-chute. But I was shown how to let go of it. Ie. let go of it behind your arm, not in front of it. You don’t want the bridle wrapped around your arm. To get to this stage of our sport, most would have seen videos of pilot-chutes being thrown away and the bag coming out of the container. If you’re sat there in free fall with a pilot-chute in your hand and don’t recognise what its job is? You haven’t been paying attention. It’s not the instructors fault.
@@burbt6069 I agree, haha, you are right... It’s almost like he’s flying there with throw-out in hand and wondering what happens next... “ok, I did this, that, and that-other-thing... now what...?”
It’s like when you’ve driven a manual car your whole life and you start driving an automatic transmission. It takes time to forget your instincts to reach for the stick shift and clutch pedal when you want to shift gears
I had a similar experience when I transitioned to depends.
Been jumping for 16 years and seen a lot of crazy shit but damn, that ranks WAY up there on the "What the hell were you thinking about!!??" list
This is Friday Freakout, Sketchy is for Saturday.
Thank you for your service
Under stress or not, you jump out of a plane, you better know how that shit works!
I got a trick for you.
Always play the Disney Frozen song to a Military sky diver in transition before their jump.
Yes that song.
Underrated comment 😂
My guess is he trained with a ripcord… Never really thought there was a downside to that, but I guess this is one of them.
bizzare... his airwork is good, wtf
@@chronicle8080
Why can't people read the f*cking description? It creates pointless and ignorant criticism.
Thanks for clearing that up for the lad!
Hanging on to it for dear life. Lucky he didn't have a major tangle on the reserve pilot.
PDK O'Dude ya that would have been deadly
I was watching for the bridle to wrap around his leg as well.
Must have been trained with a ripcord at some point. Did really well on the skydive portion.
A good reminded for all instructors to be at a hands reach on every deployment.
doesnt know how a parachute works
skydives anyways
The movie FANDANGO when Mr WEENIE lands......."Geez, you have a rather tight grip on that handle Mr Hicks!!"
It's hilarious because if people in the comments section read the description, it actually makes perfect sense XD
Completely right haha
As a kid, nobody ever invited Billy to play horseshoes, so he created his own game!
Humble1 too soon 😂
"Why did you put superglue on my pilot chute?"
"You just can't let it go can you 🙄"
A horrorshow. But it seems clear that he was trained on a ripcord and wasn't used to BOC.
I had the exact same experience. I was trained through the ripcord trigger and was transferred to BOC. 5 seconds after pulling the pilot chute, I realized my terrible mistake and let go of it but it was too late. The whole pilot chute strap was wrapped around my legs. Had no choice but to pull the reserve. It deployed at 2000ft.
Read the description people. It explains why he held on to the pilot.
I wish they would show videos of the debriefs lol
what the fuck was that
not properly trained
Very well trained. He just reverted to his initial military freefall training and did the wrong thing.
Nyhoto I will tell what that was. He was in training no doubt. Maybe level 5 in AFF. I will bet you he went from Rip Cord to throw out. He held on to the pilot shoot as if it was the rip cord handle and didn't want to pay for it if he lost it. That's what they made us do in training if we let go of the cord and lost it
JM not properly trained. Student not properly trained. ripchord, pull out belly band ... dildo ... doesn't mater
Nyhoto Video description will tell you.
I would like to see how did he land... He probably went from spring pilot chute to this one, regular.
I was waiting for the wrap.
That was 4 years ago, hope some one kept an eye on that guy.
looks like Raeford DZ in North Carolina, I think you can see the bid Fort Bragg DZ's in the background.
Ahh. Ye old case of where is my phone. Oh, I’m holding it.
This can't be as it appear to be. The guy is skilled enough to be confident in the air and to perform an almost perfect cutaway but "forgot" to release the pilot? I know that the brain sometime act in a strange way while under stress, but that's a way too much if you consider the events sequence. I believe his ex girlfriend applied some glue on that handle, because I can't find any other rationale explanation.
Read the description. Prior military free fall trained with a ripcord where you don’t release the rip
@@mattfisher5195 With a whole pilot chute dragging your hand? So it's the first case mentioned above: brainlock.
Dang even while doing the cutaway and reserve pull he still would not let go
I did exactly this on my AFF 1!!!!! But my instructor was close and she made me release it! It was only a one time mistake:)
Most mistakes in skydiving are usually a one time thing
0:39 sacrifice altitude for time !!! I need a drink !!! It’s glad he ok !!!
Kinda like pulling a pin on a hand grenade...and then forgetting to throw the grenade
As long as you never let go of the grenade itll never go off. Just like if you dont let go of your pilot chute your parachute will never deploy
He didn't forget to let go, I bet you he didn't know that you are supposed it let go. He freaked when he saw that nothing was happening and pulled the reserve.
Step 1 - pull out the pilot chute and hold tight
Step 2 - pull the cutaway handle
step 3 - pull the reserve
step 4 - pray everything works out for you
Not the first time this has happened. And won’t be the last.
Can you experienced skydivers explain to us who only fly the planes WHY he wouldn't let go of his pilot chute ?? Was that intentional, for a reason ?? I mean.. WTF ??
Took me a little while to see what he did there. For a minute I thought the main had deployed even though he was holding the pilot chute??? Then realised he'd deployed his reserve. I'm sure it won't even be mentioned in the pub (or wherever) later.
Love them MFF jumpers.
Main pulled and looks like the reserve came out also. You see it just before the video stops
Wonder what he thought when he landed with his perfectly good main pilot chute in his hand???
Lmao
What a cluster. Lucky to have survived. Poor training or better to quit now while ahead?
Love to see some of your jump vids
No don't quit. Don't ever quit. Just start from scratch and relearn it.
Weve had a fatality like that in the 80's. Girl whistled in all the way with the Pilot chute in her hand.
You can laugh at me, but i did pull the cutaway puff instead of the main and waiting for something to happen on my No. 6 AFF jump. At least i did remember rule 1. : Do something! I do understand well that things can go wrong and there is not anyone to blame. You are student and you are under extreme stress - you may do things wrong... . First rule:
Do something - pull all you have is better then do nothing. ;-)
You may ask why i pulled the cutaway first... because i had a malfunction on the main the jump before and this expirience was in the brain... just did it again that way. Simple mistake, fatal outcome.
stollifa fatal outcome?
Nono, pulled the reserve some 1500feet above ground. That was a painfull opening out of terminal speed on a round reserve. Walked away with no injuries but some blue spots from the harnest. ;-)
stollifa *harness
thx mate
so you are the student in this this video?
thats why ripcore systems are stoneage tools and it still irritates me that some military forces still use them and this videp is proof that different systems create stress if you're not used to them
I'm a former skydiver and now a (dropping) pilot. For example, we have in different airplanes different systems for the wheel brakes. At some planes you have hand grips on different places for the wheel brakes, in other planes you brake with the tips of your feets, and in other planes with your heels. This drives me crazy! And I guess to brake your airplane is a important thing...
There are still brand new systems for beginners with spring loaded PC and ripcords being sold. Its grate for beginners when there is no AFF on the DZ. Why is ti better?! Because of the bridle and rookies who jump their 11th jump without static line. They sometimes tend to lose control and stowed PC with bridle would be dangerous for them, thats why on my DZ we use spring loaded PCs and ripcords for students.
Many a skydivers' been killed for hanging onto that pilot chute too long. It can wrap around your arm preventing you from even pulling your reserve chute abruptly ending your diving career 😥
This is why base jumping is way more fun.
This is the best student video ever.
oh now i know the reserve parachute will come out from top even when your main chute still in.
Probably someone transitioning from ripcord to throw-out deployment. That's a big problem I have with ripcord mains, is that they necessarily create a training scar where there shouldn't be one.
I thought for a second his reserve pilot chute was going to get tangled with the main one! That slow-mo was terrifying. Glad this guy was okay in the end. Did he hold onto the main pilot chute all the way down?
Probably still holding onto it
Betcha it was a military transition jump.
That's no ripcord!
Description pretty much confirmed what I thought. Military Free Fall won't be transitioning to BOC for another couple years, and I'm willing to bet this guy was fresh out of MFF school, so he likely had all of 25ish jumps to his name.
Throw that 1 thing away, maybe hold on to the rest of the stuff!.. man I hope this ended well, & a case o brew
Great job! Except the last part.
He couldn't even pull his reserve handle with both hands because his right had was full (of hacky). You would think that would tip him off.
Really very nice track, probably 2 feet and why was this individual doing a long delay?
That guy must have been so unbelievably scared that he was not even able to think, so he was stuck with the chute in his hand 🤔
"AAAAHHHH... PULL EVERYTHING... THROW IN THE TOWEL... WE'RE GOIN' DOOOOWN... oh, I know... THROW OUT EVERYTHING INCLUDING THE KITCHEN SINK!!!"
asking as a non-sky diver...is it bad to deploy both chutes and why ?...thanks
OMG that intro music is so on my nervs
Really, held on to the pilot chute.
He’s lucky to have survived that.
This video should be shown in AFF classrooms
0:40 he is trying to put that back inside after his teacher warned him 😅😅
Hahahaja you made me shit my pants
Let me quess: "old" jumper got used to different release system went to AFF. In this different system to open container You just need to pull the handle. So he did. Stress plus old habits plus muscle memory gave the result we all seen. Correct me if i'm wrong.
You're correct
0:37 see let !!! Go still stable !! Haven’t roll over or spinn out of control.... I understand why VSC where strict on me !!!
OMG...not only does he not let go of the pilot chute, then he reckons that it is time to do his reserve drill while still holding onto the pilot chute...bwaaahaaahaaaa...holy crap...He is so used to hearing that if he loses the ripcord, he has to pay..lol..so this could be his throwout conversion as he is used to holding onto the ripcord..lol...Watch the cutaway handle fly..scary seeing the reserve pilot chute in tow...
After watching these and realizing this is way more dangerous than I thought. I'm surprised the jump master doesn't have a carabineer on their harness that they can use to attach to a student who has screwed up all his shoots. I mean something like he can grab the kid and clip the student into his hardness like a emergency tandem hook up.
1. Solo gear isn't designed for two people. Quite apart from design strength and intent, there simply aren't properly designed-in attachment points for such a venture.
2. The instructor isn't trained on how to do that, even if it was a good idea (and it isn't).
3. A solo parachute, especially the kind likely to be worn by instructor, simply isn't designed to take the weight and speed of two people, and...
3a. If it survives the opening intact and without broken lines or torn fabric, and
3b. The two jumpers survive the opening shock, then...
3c. The landing speed both horizontally and vertically may well be so high as to at least injure both of them, likely seriously, if not kill them anyway.
Tandem skydiving gear is big and strong and bulky for a reason!
I'd dispute your "way more dangerous" statement as well - proper training, proper mental attitude, currency, and properly maintained and packed equipment and skydiving is just about as safe as it can be - but like most air / aviation sports, it is somewhat unforgiving of mistakes.
...and yes, I jumped for 20 years as instructor and tandem jumpmaster.
Whoa, Spangler! Enough with the insults!
Don't want to imagine him basejumping....
Always happens - when someone puts a Chinese finger trap at the end of your pilot chute!
that debrief would have been amazing
Yikes, he was doing great at first. Looks like a coach dive more than an AFF. He was likely using a spring loaded PC for his aff training and then went to a boc. Were Practice touches done in the plane prior to jump? Nice almost horseshoe Mal.
Read the description. Spring loaded pc experience doesn't make you do this.
@@flybeep1661 Oh yes it does. I started with spring loaded chute and I also had ripcord which I needed to hold in my hand until chute is fully inflated, then I would put it in my leg pocket.
Its exactly the same. I was instructed when transitioning on classical PC to throw it right away and we did practice on the ground.
Why is the bridle cord so long? On 60s gear the bridle cord was only about two feet long.
what a mess
i think he held onto his main all the way down
bro how can you forget that..
