- On this episode of Street You Grew Up On, Kerry Washington and Issa Rae go in on her upbringing on Mount Vernon Drive in View Park, an affluent Black neighborhood in Los Angeles, CA. Issa discusses her role being the oldest (and the bossiest) of her “bottom three” siblings, how the street she grew up on was a huge inspiration behind HBO’s Insecure, and how she relied on television as a source of comfort.
About Street You Grew Up On: Simpson Street is where our journey begins. It’s the street that Kerry Washington’s mom grew up on in The Bronx, NY. Through this social series, Kerry Washington interviews artists, influencers and industry experts to uncover their origin stories, amplify our common humanity and affirm the value of every individuals' journey, beginning with the “street they grew up on...”
Simpson Street: @Simpson Street

i could listen to you two talk forever 😭
Damn RUclips thirsty asl in the comments
I’ve never seen RUclips comment on a video
Issas makeup looks flawless! They both do!
Wanted to say this hey. Like I can't stop looking at them both. Look at the lip colours! Love 😍😍😍
I'm stealing Kerry hairstyle lol I NEED IT! Issa looks wealthy ASF now!!
This was such a treat. Love both these phenomenal women.
What a good way to start, best first guest ever! Already waiting for Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Oh and Jamie Foxx. Good lucky on this new project, Kerry. Always with you. 🖤
Such good suggestions!!!!! xoxo
Yes! Taraji P Henson, Octavia Spencer and Zoe Kravitz would be so good too! I can't wait to see who is next!
Kerry I remember the original Degrassi Jr. High on PBS also!!
I love them both ❤❤. But baby! Kerry Washington is giving me Rick James Vibes 🤣🤫😶🤗
It was a common hairstyle for girls and women in the late 70s-early 80s actually
Love both Kerry and Issa! This is a very cute idea to conduct a sort of "This is Your Life / What Was Your Beginnings / This is How All of That Led You Here" conversation.
It was definitely on PBS and I watched the original Degrassi, 321 Contact, Bloodhound Gang, etc.
This was such a joy to watch. I remember watching Issa on youtube and now to see what she's done has been inspiring. Although I went the medical route and became a physician she is the reason I'm an avid writer and dream of one day having one of my rom-coms adapted into something she or the wonderful cast members of Insecure could star in! Keep it up!
I love this idea so much and love that the first episode is with Issa Rae. I’m subscribed and ready for the next one! ❤️
Yay! Thank you!
Same here!!! Lol
Issa Rae Kerry Washington some of my favorite Entertainer black🌚 girls Rock🪨
I knew that we could all be friends. I loved "Old School Degrassi" and "Old School Roswell." Good times, lol. Great interview.
I LOVE Degrassi, too! I literally binge-watched Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High because I enjoyed Degrassi: The Next Generation so much, and I must say the 80s Degrassi really surprised me. I even know all of the theme songs for each version of Degrassi, it's bad lol.
Me too!
Roswell! Yes Issa! 👽 That stays one of my favorite childhood shows. I enjoyed this conversation so much.
My So Called Life and Dawson's Creek...everything ❣. Plus black sitcoms, A Different World (911 E MER GEN CY; RE CONNECT THA COMM UN ITY 🤣🤣🤣) and Living Single 🔥🔥🔥
The hold Dawson's Creek had on me. 💕
Love this interview and concept for the show. So many things they touched on. Those sibling dynamics, Sat morning chores and music, and the East v West Coast grind difference. And identifying so hard with the 80/90s Black characters on TV
OMG, I loved the original Degrassi Junior High and High school. Lucy, Wheels, Spike... I've never even seen the "Drake" version.
I totally watched the original Degrassi Junior high, and Degrassi high, in the late 80's/early 90's. The original. It originally aired on Canadian TV but in the USA it aired on PBS. My sister and I loved it and it dealt with like serious topics that you didn't see on regular U.S. Network television, or really anywhere even on cable at that time. (For preteens and teens, that is). Very rarely but sometimes the more progressive teachers would show a couple episodes in school for lesson.
Yes, I was a total fan.
Kerry Kerry Kerry 😍 you are one woman I adore soo much, and you had Issa as the first guest, perfect choice because I adore her as much... This is a representation of black in elevation, I feel like I'm peeping into Issa's childhood, good lead question-wise, is flowing. Can't wait for more episodes 😍, and I can't wait to visit LA one day😉
Shout out to OG Degrassi on PBS! 🤗 IYKYK... I'm loving this series, it takes me back to the fun parts of my youth. Thank you !
Congratulations Kerry on the premier of your new series on RUclips, Street You Grew Up On!!! Such an interesting concept to have your guest reflect on the street/community that they grew up on/in and how that influenced their current life. Issa Rae was a wonderful first guest, I learned so much about what contributed to shape her into who she is today. May I suggest that one of your guest be your Mom so that we can get to know a little more about what was so special about Simpson Street and of course her! It would be a nice tribute to your Mom and Simpson Street plus, Ms Valerie may let us all in on some interesting stories about "little Miss Kerry."
I watched this simply because of the Degrassi reference. I watched Degrassi Jr High, High and the Drake version.
I love Issa Rae she is absolutely beautiful! I feel like she would be a super cool friend her personality is DOPE!
Loved this!

This was delightful. It soothes my soul to witness you two interact. Golden.
Such a good series 🙌. These are the questions I ask people in person and always get funny looks haha nice to see you get this intimate with others.

Love the respect she’s giving to the NY grind!! 💙💙
Congrats on your inaugural show! Perfect choice for a first guest. Love both all of y’all 🥰
Thanks for the fun, positive content. This is just the type of show that we need during stressful trying times. 💖 Yay! I'll be back.
Two favorite people to see on the screen 💕 hope Kerry see’s this 🥰
I’ll probably watch this 3 or more times. You both are easy to admire and listen to. My iPad smiles!
Issa is so relatable 💜 this podcast. Subscribed Kerry is sweet and poised 💗
Issa is one of my favorite people. I’m so glad I got to see this interview or talk or whatever. I’d be satisfied seeing you two walking in the park. I could watch this forever.
I enjoyed this .....💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
I love this! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to you two have this conversation. I just feel like all these questions are revealing security questions. Maybe it’s just the way the military trained me to think. Love the concept though.
Yay! I clicked as soon as I saw 💥❤️ two Queens! ❤️
Thank you for doing this show Kerry. Black feminists like you and Issa Rae take care of black women, black girls, and black female images like nobody else. I hope black girls with big dreams find THE STREET YOU GREW UP ON and watch every episode.
Issa!!! Love the way your brain is wired!!
This is a phenomenal idea, Kerry! Brava! 🌹✌🏾
Awesome conversation! Lots of good hearty laughs! #Subscribed
Awww, I loved this interview. Thank you for NY compliment. I love my city. Never been to Cali, but hope to go one day. Even as a Brooklyn girl I’ve always longed to visit Cali; Compton specifically because of my favorite LA black movies.💕
Shout out to old school Degrassi watchers
What a dope way to learn about where people come from and what shapes them. Definitely need more of this in our everyday lives too 👏🏽 Can't wait for more! Also, I LOVE the hair. Black women should be able to rock whatever hair they want with out constantly hearing unwanted, unnecessary opinions from others. Love this concept and I'm here for it 🙌🏾
Great job
Wow !! Just found your channel. I love it 😀
Love this series Kerry!!!! Issa is funny without trying. She said she was a hater and aligned herself with her mom to snitch on her siblings. 😂 I can relate. I'm the oldest, my siblings annoyed me so much growing up til I just wanted them to get in trouble all the time.
I loved this whole episode, I could really feel your admiration for each other. I would love to hear from Viola Davis, Amanda Gorman or Mindy Kaling.
Kerry I am a huge fan, I can't wait to see more from you 😍
Looking forward to a great RUclips adventure with you, Kerry.
Love this interview between u two Queens and how Issa shouted out to View Park same area I grew up in how she grew up on Mount Vernon , I was raised on Floresta Way not far from the Crenshaw District had the best of both worlds growing up. Super proud of this Beautiful Black Woman who continues to shine.
wait, this is a great idea for a show! making me think of where i spent my time as a kid.
I love Kerry's hair!
@Kerry Washington and @Issa Rae, you’re both so beautiful and funny!!! Kerry, I commented about an hour ago on your IG post that I was just learning about this channel today. Don’t mind me as I binge watch these videos. 🤣🤣🤣.
Kerry, please bring:
-Yvonne Orji
-Gabourey Sidibe
-Tony Goldwyn
-Tamron Hall
Yes, I loved the original Degrassi too!!!
"stop pump fakin" thanks needed that
