Africa is a continent with 54 countries. She grew up in one of the 54 countries. Normalize stating people's countries. No one says Conan grew up in North America. Please accord the same respect to others. Issa Rae grew up in Senegal.
I get your point and don't disagree with it but they do say Conan grew up in America which technically covers all the America's.
Also the reason they do this is most people watching the show sadly would have no idea where Senegal is.

@@lacy4035 Yes people say America as a short for U.S. but technically any of the countries you listed can say they are from America and that is correct. It is a semantic argument and not worth fighting about, but is true and not a lie.
As I said I agree people should learn countries better, but a title is meant to be a summary of the story and most people don't know countries in Africa. So saying Africa in the title simplifies it and brings more people in.

@@aeis3007 "Most people don't know countries in Africa" is a terrible excuse. If anything, it's all the more reason to avoid using "Africa" altogether, and start educating people about the countries in that continent. In any case, I clicked because of Issa Rae, not Africa, so learning something new wouldn't hurt.

To those saying “She grew up in Africa,” please understand the numerous messages that you are sending, whether intentional or not.
1) I do not understand even the most basic fact about Africa, which is that it is a continent and not a culture.
2) I do not consider it worth 5 seconds of research to learn even this basic fact.
3) I expect my ignorance to be accommodated and if it is not then I am being attacked.
4) I am ignorant because of 1-3.
5) Despite 4, I still feel a right to correct others on her nationality.
Ms. Rae has a Senegalese father and an African-American mom and grew up in both lands. Embrace the complexity of the global majority.
