Dont think ive ever seen someone explain this so clearly an easily. For someone that doesn't know this. You have made it so easy an clear. But then again im not surprised. You always make things this way. So too anyone thats learning guitar. Lauren Bateman is the way to go.
OMG!!! I ordered a beginner guitar inspired on this video… the more I see your videos the more I want to learn guitar … it’s going to be very fun to start to play guitar for me at my 65 (years old) finally my dreams will be accomplish it I am determined to do it because of you!!!Finally I got it… Thanks Lauren!!!!
Thank you so much! I'm 57 and finally trying to learn after a life time of being to busy. Struggling heavy due to memory problems from crash. But this is helping. Your awesome!
Thank you, there is no better and more thorough explanation of this method! I wish, around 40 years ago, when I first saw tablature, you and your videos had existed. For many years I have watched videos and written down the frets on tab sheets I made myself. That's how I still learn solos, licks and scales to this day. I hope many will learn from your video as it will be a wonderful resource for anyone interested in tablature. Kind regards, Rudi.
I always had trouble which string to play. I think I was using the top string as the heavy not of E. That’s why the songs didn’t sound right. Than you come along show us that the top E is the high pitch. So I was playing in reverse. So I’ve learned so much today that I’ll go back & play the songs the the right way. Thanks for an Excellent Tutorial.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hi Lauren, I know of you from VRA and have really learned a lot by watching your videos. You are a great teacher. I’ve been playing guitar over 30 years. I used to teach about 15 years ago.Now along with my RUclips channel, I’m getting back to teaching again. For whatever reason, I’ve never really been into tab but now that I’m bringing on new students, I’m probably going to start using tab more. Thanks again. I’m very inspired by what you are doing so thank you!!
So very helpful! Many people assume that guitarists understand tabs and/or understand the new way tablature is written. I didn't. I was a "band geek" (Yay! Band Geeks! :) ) throughout school and took additional classes in musical theory, earned distinction in local, state, and national honor band. So I know how to sight read music-- I'm rusty after all these years, but I can do it. The new version of reading tab though left me with a "WTF?", so thank you so much for having done this video. It so needs a bump or a pin or something so others looking through your videos knows it's available. And once again, you explain it so well!
Thanks Lauren - after watching this, I think it may be helpful (to me) to write the names of the notes besides the numbers - which will help me learn the notes on the neck as I’m reading/learning the TABS.
That's an excellent idea. I can read notation for piano, but applying it to guitar more difficult so I think this will make tabs less confusing and notation easier to read, too. Both wins for me.
So impressed with your teaching, I am brand new on guitar . at the ripe age of 73 and really enjoying the way you teach and your enthusiasm , thank you very much
I tell everyone I see that ask me why David are you so happy 😀 and I tell them all about your show on RUclips and how fun you make guitar! Thanks again for your help today please keep helping us learners and God will keep blessing you
One way to understand the low string on the bottom of the tab/top of the guitar confusion is to look at the tab as if it were a guitar hanging on the wall. If you think of turning the tab a quarter turn clockwise, so that the lines run vertically, rather than horizontally; it reads low to high from left to right just like a guitar hanging on the wall.
Lauren, the reason that TAB has the highest strings on top is because that is the way you see your fretboard from the playing position as you look down.
Thank you so much teacher. Start from today remember that you are my teacher and I am your guitar student ok, don’t forget it ok. And I will try my best as I am your student. I try not to put you in shame. I will not promise you that I will be a famous guitar player in the world, but I will do my best.
I find learning tabs a lot easier for me, as now let's say I'm a senior I can't get some of the normal guitar chords. But playing tabs still enjoyable to me.
LOL I'm learning guitar, but before now, I never played a musical instrument - _except_ Ode to Joy. I love Beethoven's 9th, so I learned to play Ode to Joy on every instrument that came near me in my life. I can't play jack squat else, but I can pick out Ode to Joy on guitar, piano/keyboard, recorder, xylophone, and violin (pretty badly on violin). It just tickled me that it was the example chosen for reading tablature.
I am in my 40’s relearning guitar and you have been a GODSend!! If I’d like to pursue lessons, do you do zoom for remote lessons? You’re awesome thank you for breaking everything down! ♥️
Hi Lauren! I’ve bin watching your videos recently and they’re helping a lot. But I have one question about reading Tab. Sometimes in tab you can se / and \ even some times the letter b or h (can’t remember really). For example 4/6, 5h7 or 5b7 not sure which letter.
Lauren, where did you hide this, my son got me on the tabs awhile ago and I just came across your tab lesson. I'm not going to say forget chords but tabs help you get going while you struggle with chords.
Lara great beginning lessons. I'm 73 and have taken up the guitar. Your the first person that has actually started at the beginning. I have gained belly weight. The belly pushes the bottom side of the guitar out. Which makes it harder to fret. And the angle changes as I play. Do you have any suggestions for old fella. Thank you
If you can sight read, you might notice the similarity of the Tab to sheet music. The TAB goes from low to high, just like a conventional music staff. If you play an Octave from Middle C , the whole notes go smoothly up the staff. Similarly, if you start at the A-string on the TAB, you can get a pattern like: (A-string) Fret3, (D-string) 'Fret0' - Fret2 - Fret3, (G-string) 'Fret0' - Fret2, (B-string) 'Fret0' - Fret2 ...
Thank you so much for everything literally. But I have a question, what does it mean when tabs are in the form of a chord but there’s a number on each one of the 6 string . Is it a chord ? How am I supposed to play it ?
Thank you. This is great explanation. But harder...and impossible is...to hear some nice song on radio. And to write or get right tabs for it.There are few softwares that do that, but they are not always free and accurate.
WOW LAUREN is there anything you cannot teach simply on guitar? You make learning the guitar so simple and fun! (BTW TY for your tip on guitar picks, recently got the DUNLOP .60 orange picks and I noticed a BIG difference, my guitar sounds like YOURS now!)
Hi Lauren do you think I should go to big Apple Music for sign up the class there or just learn with you? Right now I know how to play some chords and very beginning strumming patterns. And do you accept online student and how much for the price of you class? Thanks.
Hello! It’s really up to what you think will work best for you. I do have an online course that contains about 9-12 months of materials for $297. You can learn more about that here: www.laurenbatemanguitar.com/courseyt
Excellent clear and easy to follow instructions without any tangent or incomplete information. 5 ⭐️ your best in guitar show and learn how to play guitar with Award Winner Lauren Bateman on RUclips!
Hey! I just wanna say I've learned a lot from watching you for the past two days. i tried to play the music you showed in the video and whenever i hold my e string down it just dosnt sound the same as yours, like no matter how lightly i press it sounds like its being held down at the 13th fret or something. is that normal or should i maybe loosen my e string a little?
As long as timing and time signatures are not an issue; i.e. is the "3" on the first string on the chart a half note or a quarter note? Is the song played in 4/4 or 3/4 or maybe 6/8 time? Charts show you the notes, music shows you the music.
I agree that the higher notes are high and lower notes low and that is consistent with sheet music, but TAB is also consistent with looking down at your guitar and seeing the strings in front of you.
@@LaurenBateman , I read somewhere that “TAB’ stands for treble and base. So another way to orient oneself while reading tab is when you read the word “TAB’ at the left side, the line at the top (above the letter T) is treble (high E string) and the line at the bottom (below the letter B), is the low E string. Thanks for the lesson. Very concise and effective!

I chose not to show the rhythmic notation in these examples to keep it simple. But you can have rhythm symbols on tablature.
