the higher level smurdges slow the ghost down or freeze it so it doesnt end up walking away from you if ur trying to get it to leave the room

What Brockoli above said. Since you're way slower than the ghost slowing it down or freezing it won't make it slow enough to escape, so the only thing you can do is hope it walks away from you with the tier 1 smudge and lose track of you. It can however still randomly take the same path as you and kill you when the smudge ends

Heads up the salt the same with T2 and up. T2 salt slows the ghost, and T3 stops em for like 3s i think.
