Tommy tapped out when he heard “I love you Tommy”. That’s all he wanted to hear. He didn’t have to win anymore. He already won… he got back his brother. And his big brother carried him out arm in arm overseen by a proud father finally seeing his sons together.
The last fight wasn’t so much about humbling as it was about the progression of their relationship. Tommy got what he wanted from his brother who he was abandoned by and Brendan finally understood the impact he had and in that scene where tommy taps it all comes together
I feel like people really underestimate the story in this film, a lot of other reactors just think oh it's just a fighting movie about 2 brothers but no it's more. I really like how you analyzed the entire movie understanding every aspect. The story is much deeper than let on. Growing up as kids Brendan always lived in Tommy's shadow when it came to sports and he knew he didn't have the same appreciation as Tommy did from their father. When the time came for the boys and their mother to leave their abusive father, not only did Brendan already have so much to lose with his to be wife and maybe other life choices, but he also saw it as an opportunity to be the only 'star' in his fathers eyes. But it didn't go to plan as now he was his fathers main target after not only being abandoned by his wife and star son, but at his lowest point as well. Obviously Brendan didn't know that his mother was sick at that point and Tommy would go on to having to care for her immensely and then eventually ending up alone. The fathers war PTSD was accurately shown but obviously it's not ok to be an abusive alcoholic. Now grown up Tommy has returned from the army to help the family of his brother in arms after he was killed by their own fighter pilots, and Brendan just wants his family to be secure and safe financially hence entering the tournament. I feel like even with the final battle between the brothers and having everything they were fighting for, they actually ended up fighting for each other, in a way for mutual respect. Which is why Brendan didn't bail out of the fight as soon as he saw his younger brother was hurt. He knew it was about more than just the money. And when Brendan finally says "I'm sorry Tommy, I'm sorry" with that music in the background??? man that pulls on a man's heartstrings, because after Tommy taps we see that he just wanted his older brothers love over everything else. And I'm sure that Brendan did end up giving Tommy some money for that family. It's sad that that is what the brothers have to go through just to get each other back. Phenomenal movie.
I wouldn't say Tommy was humbled because he was never cocky fighting was just a means to an end. As for the complex relationship between Tommy and his father, you have to remember that this is the first time he has interacted with his father since he was fourteen. That anger is fresh. Also, being abused is horrible within itself but watching your mother getting the crap beat out of her breeds a whole new level of hatred for her abuser. Then to have her struggle and suffer until she died, i can't image how Tommy controlled himself as well as he did.
Great reaction, many aren't aware of the mentality of a fighter and what they need and go through, but a great mix between what is real and movie distinction, enjoyed your on depth understanding
You hit the nail on the head when you were talking about the importance of having your coach there ringside. I wrestled in high school, and I can't stress enough just how essential it was having your coach there. Having someone there not just yelling advise, but yelling support and encouragement. And even at our larger tournaments where they have multiple matches at the same time, and the coach couldn't always be there. At times like that one of your teammates would go and be there at your mat. It made a huge difference in your performance.
love this reaction man. i'd love to see more full movie reactions from you because you're sharp and insightful. if you haven't seen Sicario or No Country for Old Men i would LOVE to see you react to them. Fight Club is another one of my favs.
i loved your reaction and i thought it was very unique for you to bring thoughtful insight to the fight scenes as a student of the sport. my only minor criticism is that instead of providing the technical analysis of the last scene ("I love you, tommy"), i wish you would've just watched and soak in the moment as it was the emotional climax of the entire movie. Overall, i enjoyed your commentary for the film. 👍
Whether I cry or not, I make an ugly cry face whenever I watch this movie lol. It’s interesting that they leave Brendan’s ability to withstand an enormous amount of violence unspoken. Not necessarily realistic, but I assume it was because of his upbringing. :-/ I also like the brief scenes of him teaching about physics, which certainly come in handy 😆. Tommy had trauma on top of trauma from his mother’s death, abuse from his father, perceived abandonment by his brother, and then his deserting the army leaves him vulnerable and alone as well… oof. (Brendan had plenty himself, ofc.) Anyway, cool reaction and analysis; I didn’t know much about MMA fighting.
Brendan reminded me of Diaz in the Masvidal fight or even Silva in the Sonnen fight. Hardy and Edge r ton were awesome. You were right that, according to his character, Tommy should have fell asleep in the end, and not tapped. Loved your reaction. I know you've probably seen it, but after a movie like this, I recommend Kung Fu Hustle. We need to laugh too!!
He tapped bc he finally didn’t have to fight anymore. His whole life he had to fight for love. His big brother saying “I love you” made him realize his fights over. He can rest now. It’s deeper then “tuff guy shouldn’t tap” homie lmao
Joel Edgerton had it way worse filming this movie than Tom Hardy did. His fight scenes were much longer and more intense. He even tore his MCL while filming. Hardy's character meanwhile, had those short, fight scenes, so he came through the movie with no physical injuries. If you love great fight movies. I suggest you check out the 2005 Russell Crowe movie "Cinderella Man." It's the true story of boxer James J. Braddock during the Great Depression.
I love your reaction and commentary. One thing I'd like to note though, your commentary is pretty loud over the film itself. For those who want to enjoy both. Great reaction but a little change in the volumes I think would be good.
kinda surprised you didn't mention Kurt Angle's presence in the movie. Obviously a pro wrestling legend, but more so a collegiate and freestyle wrestling legend. Also it's not so strange that Brendan can hang around after so much fighting and damage. Sakuraba fought Royce Gracie for an hour and a half then in the same night went to a draw with Igor Vovchachyn (the top hw in the world) in regulation before finally having to bow out due to exhaustion for the overtime round, having fought a total of 105 minutes in one night.
Great reaction. I just got done watching a movie called Jojo Rabbit. One of my favorite movies of all time now. You oughtta check it. I think you'll love it
Also, not the highest ranked fighter by any means and not a cardio machine as much as a movie can make you but Nate Landwehr is very animal like the same way as Tommy. He's had some legendary battles when he was in M-1 gloval defending his title and even in the UFC though he got there at an older age. His Darren Elkins bloodshed battle and David Onama battle were epic and a reflection of what he was in his prime when he was an American champion in Russia for years. Sucks, he got to UFC after his prime but he has still done work and shown that animal he has in him that not many do.
The whole movie set up Brendan as a sponge that could just absorb punishment. So, it's not out of the realm of possibility he could take Tommy's shots.

Tommys mind after breaking his father seems to go over the heads of most people in how the last fight plays out.
Great catch

Brendan's fight style seems to be very much patterned after Kazushi Sakuraba, aka, The Gracie Hunter.
My favorite all-time movie. Great commentary!
It’s a Great Film! I’m Glad You Enjoyed The Commentary
An MMA and movie fan would do well to check out Redbelt starring Chiwetel Ejiofor.
This tournament was like early days mma and ufc and pride no focus on weight classes or recovery just brawling lol
This is a great point 👍🏽
