  • Hey there, so I have a few projects Id like to work on in my shop, unfortunately it is hot an uncomfortable out there. I used to have a couple of window AC units on the roof of the shop with a hole cut in the roof to vent the cool air to the shop but that setup would sometimes leak, and would have to be re-waterproofed every couple years. I eventually just had to replace the roof last fall and don't want to cut a hole in the roof again.
So, I figured I would modify the window AC units I already have and convert them into split units where the evaporator is in the shop, and condenser is on the roof of the shop with just a couple small copper lines, and wires between the two. To do that I need to recover the refrigerant that is still in the system before I can cut the lines and take it apart. So I picked up this refrigerant recovery machine (refrigerants are an environmental hazard and shouldn't be released to the air) also just a note to use this legally in the US you should have your EPA certification to work on air conditioners. Now on the the project, I tried this out and was able to pull out all of the refrigerant into a recovery tank and will be able to re-use it when the AC is put back together as a split unit.

Thank you, I really appreciate this video. I haven't found very many videos on RUclips showing the proper step-by-step method for recovering refrigerant from small units like this, refrigerators and freezers. This was informational, accurate, has good lighting, clear audio and no music. Thank you! subbed.

    Does this machine handle R-134a?

Yes it will work with R-134a. If working with more than one refrigerant just use separate recovery tank to avoid mixing refrigerants. There is a link to the model I used in the video description.

Is the dryer no longer included with the machine? It looks like they do have replacement ones available too, I added the link to that in the video description.

Does this recovery machine have a PURGE on it to clear the refrigerant from it?

    • @planbuildplay8528

There is not a purge setting, but after done recovering from the air conditioner you can close the low side valve and run the machine to clear any refrigerant out of the machine.
