Thanks for posting this. I am not a mechanically inclined individual to say the least, but your video gave me the "Hey, I think I can do that!" attitude and I changed the oil on the Sportsman last night. Thank you for saving me some money at the stealership! Anything on how to rebuild the carb? lol. I think that might be my next attempt. Thanks again, great video!
All you have to do is pull the dip stick out from the reservoir and check and see what color it is...if it is dark...it is dirty and needs to be changed. The dipstick is located on the left side under the frong fender...yellow plug
Good video. Only thing is, you should have stood back and then slowly came in to the areas where the different drain plugs come out. Its difficult to see where your working or where the drain plugs are located. Would hate to drain the wrong fluid and add the wrong fluid ie, gear lube in transmission .
I think it would have been better upon starting to show where the actual location is for each thing being worked on. I had trouble figuing out where you are on the machine when you started and throughout. Thanks still a help
I've got this ATV although the year may be slightyly different. The fan is not turning which could be why it's overheating. I'm looking for a fuse box ??Where the heck is it? And, do I have to take the front off to get to the radiator cap? Thanks. Beth
2011 polaris sportsman 800efi. I've bought front gear case oil, ps4 engine oil and traission fluid. Was stuck as to what plugs to drain etc! Any help would be great full. Cheers Robert
Mark Jenkins Hey, Mark great video series! Best on RUclips. Saw during the intro to this vid that you bought a replacement belt. I know that this vid was made a while ago, but do you have a video for the belt removal/replacement process? Thanks.
No you weren’t done....after refilling with fresh oil, You have to squeeze the hoses from the oil tank to the engine while machine is running to “prime” the oil pump or bye bye engine.
Any tips on how to get the oil screen bolt on the back of the oil pan off? I have a 2002 sportsman 6x6 I am lacking any kind of power tool, only have wrenches and that sucker is on tight! is it a reverse thread? I have a torch... is it safe to heat an aluminum oil pan? its kind of close to fuel lines. help!!! I'm soo frustrated! I cant get the stupid thing to budge. all I want to do is clean the thing off because I bought this thing used and I doubt that its been done before.
Use Wix oil filter #51358 best in the market. Switch to a used older aluminum oil tank when they made them a little better instead of the cheaper plastic tank.
Hello, I'm not very familiar with oil changes so I'm sorry if this sounds like a stupid question. But is draining the crank case necessary? If so, when you fill the quad back up with engine oil it fills the crank case as well? I'm a little bit confused...
Okay thank you for the quick response! If i drain the crank case it does not need to be primed or anything? I know running something like that dry for any amount of time is not good... Thanks again
A Harley mechanic once told me not to remove the steel plug every time because it wears on the aluminum threads. He said not enough oil in there to risk damaging threads. I guess same reasoning applies to the Polaris.
Is this engine oil change? I've bought 3 different oils ps4 engine oil, some demand and drive plus front gear case oil, also transmission fluid. I'm an engineer so I'm pretty hands on and don't mind doing this myself but was just stuck as to what plugs drain what and were to top back up? Over got a 2011 polaris sportsman 800efi. Any help would be greatful.
I recently acquired a 1996 polaris 400 2 stroke, unfortunately it did not come with any manuals. Looking for s0me help on how to check and change all fluids.... this is my first ATV and seeking any advise. Also if anyone out there can refer me to a free owner/service manual theyre not using that would be awesome......
You're amazed that people take these in for simple work to be done? I agree. I'm always amazed how people will pay $60 for a certain brand of fluids!! Not necessary. I've already heard the reasons why people think they need to spend extra. Otherwise, video was good.
long time since vid and post, but ya, that bottom engine bolt is a pita if you dont take the floor boards off these foremans, either way.. decent vid mark sorry i know its a old vid, i do a couple of these a year for friends tho.. i buy honda sorry :P
sportsmans lol, sorry, thinkin of foreman im working on, full service, valves, oil, diffs.. blah blah.. got foreman on the brain just beatin around youtube bein a dick i guess lol
hello anyone, i have a 97 polaris sportsman 400 4x4 2 stroke and it calls for 32:1 ratio which is 4 ounce per 1 gallon of gas. this seems like a lot of oil = 20 ounces to put in a 5 gallon gas jug so can anyone help me? can you use 10-30 iv heard? whats the best oil to use?
Whoever engineered that should be smacked on the side of the head and have their job taken away who would do this this is nuts all this stuff did you change to court to Hoyle?

this is the first video that has actually shown that second plug and it's location to drain the oil!! thanks!!!!
Had no idea there were 2 places until now
Exactly
Thx for actually showing where the bottom plug is and a few ways to get to it. Many videos just jump into it
Seven thumbs down? Must be seven dealers. Great, short, simple video, big help for me for my first time oil change on my used Ranger.
Maybe because he didn't prime the system and people that watch will not know to do that step?

Loved your video. We have the RZR XP 1000 and Wildcat X ATV's and we enjoy them, they are tough and hold up excellently on our tour.
Thank you for explaining everything so well, great service job!
love doing the services to my machine, that way i know it's done right!
Great Video! i changed iol b4 by a video and yes you are correct most dont know where that engine plug is... Thumbs up brother
Same question as TheLenny187? Did you have to prime the pump?

How about priming the pump? Was it necessary
I just got a 500 ho sportsman … the video was kind of confusing so do I need to drain and fill 2 seperate tanks ???

Agree
Do you have a video on changing your rear differential fluid on your 03 Polaris sportsman
I think it would have been better upon starting to show where the actual location is for each thing being worked on. I had trouble figuing out where you are on the machine when you started and throughout. Thanks still a help
did u have to prime the oil pump when u drane the crank case also??

2011 polaris sportsman 800efi. I've bought front gear case oil, ps4 engine oil and traission fluid. Was stuck as to what plugs to drain etc! Any help would be great full. Cheers Robert

hi i got a 2004 polaris 330 ATP true 4x4 on demand and i would like to know what type oil it takes!
Great vid! Do u prime it, some say yes, yours showed no!
No you weren’t done....after refilling with fresh oil, You have to squeeze the hoses from the oil tank to the engine while machine is running to “prime” the oil pump or bye bye engine.
damn didnt know that mine still runs like a champ
Mines a couple years older and has a metal tank for the oil.

I have a 1997 sportsman 500 and idk if mine has the screen. I’ll probably look in the Schematics and see but I have never checked a screen
Yep just checked it and it is a little different but it does have a screen at that location
Yeah it was in need of cleaning. It was 75% covered in a fiber material. But I am glad to get it cleaned
So what makes "ATV" oil some magical unicorn juice that does something that Mobil 1, Rotella or Royal Purple can't do?
I just put standard stuff in it I haven't had no issue I've been doing it for years it's cheaper all the Polaris stuff is just rebranded
how do we check oil quantity once done?

how do I change the transmission fluid in a 2004 sportsman 400
Anyone know how to fill the oil back up might be a dumb question but better safe than sorry
Show me to change the crankcase oil300 demon polaris 2 stroke
What about the 1000 xp?
You need to bleed the oil line if you remove that filter screen.
Is this engine oil change? I've bought 3 different oils ps4 engine oil, some demand and drive plus front gear case oil, also transmission fluid. The manual says you have the prime the oil pump by pinching the sump vent. Or is this only for the newer sportsmans?
yes
You forgot to show how to prime the oil after you remove the screen
Great vid. Thank u

On the oil tank there is a dip stick
That bottom drain plug is a pain.
