  • The twisted family tale of Eileen Franklin and her father, George, is the center of the new Showtime docu-series “Buried.”
Eileen claims that, in 1969, she watched George molest and murder her best friend, Susan Nason. She repressed the traumatic memory for 20 years. And it wasn’t until she gazed into the eyes of her five-year-old daughter that the memories came rushing back.
Did Eileen Franklin really see her father kill Susan Nason?

When I was a year and a half old, in 1971, while my mother was handing my grandmother a boiling hot cup of coffee, I jumped into my grandmother's lap and burned myself. It was spoken about and referred to as why I was so klutzy. When I was 32, I was sitting in bed and a flash of memory hit me. I called my mother and asked why her sister, my aunt, was in the kitchen with my dad's mother. My mother replied, "Because it was MY mother who was there." I went on to describe the kitchen and my mother couldn't believe I could remember it so accurately--especially the part where I said "Hold me, Gamma!" Sadly, my maternal grandmother died a few months later. So, that did give me comfort that I had at least one memory of her--even it was only for five seconds.
But here is the crazy part: for most of my life the Chicago song 'Beginnings' would make me weepy, whenever it came on the radio. In 2009, as I was reading water meters, a huge flash of memory hit me! 'Beginnings' was on the radio when I dumped the coffee. Some would say, "Impossible! That song came out in 1969, and your memory is from 1971!" I went back and researched and found that yes, the song came out in 1969 as a B-side release. However, it was re-released in 1971 as an A-side and was charting right at the same time I got "klutzy". I did NOT have any therapy, counseling or hypnosis; my memory came back when it thought I was emotionally ready to handle it.

That is so true regarding your last comment saying memories come back up when you’re ready. I had something happen to me at age 6, I would say it remained very buried until last year and my psych told me this very thing…. I don’t think I ever totally forgot as it came up in my brain a handful of times in the last 30 years but I didn’t grasp what was happening to me until recently. I also experienced trauma in my late 20’s. Those moments of extreme hurt, anger and devastation were completely forgotten until the same time the other memory surfaced. Quite overwhelming initially.

This! I remember my uncle, when I was four years old, being in the hospital of aids related pneumonia. The only thing I remember is him looking in my eyes from the hospital bed and telling me just remember that I love you. I remember how prickly his whiskers looked on his face … I remember how his lips and eyes looked, when he said it to me….. so strange how that happens.
Weirdly enough, I remember waking up as a child years later, to the song “whoop there it is” playing in my head. I somehow knew every word to it. When I’d explained how arbitrary the dream was for me , and how is every word was somehow locked inside my brain, My mom told me that was one of my uncle’s favorite songs to dance to at the clubs . So , your comment definitely touched my heart ❤ I’m glad we have our memories ❤ the human mind is so powerful

As a child, I was sexually abused for more than ten years. I repressed those memories as a defense mechanism until I was 33. I was depressed and anxious and contemplating suicide then. The memories came out of ME, not my therapist. It was a long process of recovery, but I did it through the help of many good people. The perpetrator was my father. When I revealed it to my siblings, they all believed me because of the way he treated us all, especially one of my sisters.
Are Eileen Franklin's memories real? I can't answer that. But the response of many people is to assume someone with these memories is lying. I spent a lot of time being part of the incest recovery movement. Millions of people in this country engage in a defense mechanism: this can't be happening to so many people! There can't be that many adults who do this to children! Why didn't that eight-year old report it? Why didn't the other parent know? These are all attempts to make themselves feel better by denying how many children in this country are being molested, even as I type these words. One in three girls in this country is molested in childhood. One in six boys is molested. Calling Eileen Franklin a liar isn't going to fix this.
BTW, Amy, you have Freud's theory wrong. When he did psychoanalysis in those early years, he heard from a number of his patients, including many middle class women, about their sexual abuse history. He presented these findings at a conference and he was SEVERELY criticized by his colleagues for lying, for making this up. In order to save his career, he created the theory that incest did not cause neuroses, but that the mere fantasies of incest, particularly with the father, caused neuroses. He betrayed his patients to save his career. Years ago, Jeffrey Mousaieff Masson wrote a book about this called "The Assault on Truth." Has anybody proved Masson wrong? I don't know, but his assessment still rings true to me, given the number of psychoanalysts who followed Freud's lead on this.
    Thanks for your time.

      @tuvoca825 2 месяца назад +4

      It happens in trauma.
      And time isn't helping.
Memories are notoriously unreliable... never assume based only on one witness. You need at least two or one and some clear evidence for criminal things. As an adversarial system... we are supolpoased to put thr butden on the accuser. In England, it's the other way around... guilty until proven innocent (inquisitional system). Weird.
But some traumas cauae a dissociative state and can distort the truth. It's why some perps can believe their own lies... they were damaged victims that didn't heal right. But innocent people can also be victims. So... yeah. Just collect the evidence and do the best you can. God will hold everyone accountable for their own sins.

When we, the survivors, have recovered memories, not from hypnosis, but when they just come back out of nowhere, they are very jarring & surreal. We do not know what is going on ourselves! For me, I had dreams for 40 something years & then one day I all of the sudden remembered! I was standing in my living room talking to my son & the memories of being s.a. came flooding back like a tsunami! Yes, it does happen & I sought therapy that day! I'm better. However, the brain is amazing, it can definitely bury traumatic memories for a very long time & it doesn't need anything or anyone to bring the back out! They will come out all on their own! Take a visit to the V.A.!

@@VernSherristhe repressed memory happens and traumatic events come out, but it's hard to tell which is memory and what are the details as stories come out in the media about the event and sometimes the memories and media get jumbled up. I think the girl killed the little girl and because of that she repressed the memories and then blamed it on her dad to get back at him for the abuse to her family. So repressed memories are hard to stand alone to find someone guilty.

It's also been known for councillors to coerce patients into thinking they have "repressed memories" and convincing them it's true memories. The remote Scottish island of Lewis was torn apart by allegations of ritual child abuse. But later into the investigation doubts arose. The case against the accused suddenly collapsed, just as similar actions in the Orkneys and Nottingham.. It was deemed the child psychologists were implanting false memories into the children's minds thus creating a form of mass hysteria among the children. It basically had become a witch-hunt to accuse the parents of practising satanic worship.

    • @peternolan4107
      @peternolan4107 2 месяца назад

I have no doubt the case you mentioned did occur. There were several cases like that. However, the majority of people who recover abuse memories are not doing it to get at other people or create mass hysteria. They are simply remembering the truth.

Human memory is such a strange thing. A few years ago, a man was shot about 30 meters from my house. A couple of hours later, a policeman knocked on my door and asked if I had been home in the morning. I said I was. He asked if I saw or heard anything. I scanned my memory of that morning and said that no, I didn't see or hear anything. The policeman was very surprised by my response and asked again: You didn't hear anything? And I focused again trying to remember, and said: No, there was nothing unusual.
Years later, out of the blue, I suddenly had this recollection of being in my bedroom and hearing an almighty sound, very very loud. I had never heard a gun go off before, so I didn't recognise that sound, but I remembered being startled by it and wondering what it was.
How did I not remember it a couple of hours later when I spoke to that policeman? 😯 Or later that day when I learned of the shooting? Or days later when I learned the details of that shooting? Why would I all of a sudden remember that noise as clear as day years later?
    So bizarre...

I could never convict someone if the primary evidence was from repressed memories. I can't say that the these memories are true or false, but when the evidence is that ambiguous, there should always be enough doubt to vote "not guilty." Having gone down this road, I'm not even certain of her other accusations.

I remember reading about this in the Los Angeles Times at the time when repressed memories were first a thing and then when the judge overturned George's conviction.
I believe Eileen. Enough things match up and there's certainly not a better suspect. Too bad they couldn't recover DNA from the mattress. I guess if Susan wasn't found for a long time that whatever DNA was present at the scene would have been degraded.
I do believe some people could repress memories when their life is threatened and it's almost as though they have to dissociate to cope completely. And I do believe Eileen about remembering about Susan's abuse and death at the hands of her father.
It's really not like Eileen could have come home and told Mom or her sister what happened to Susan, she probably didn't fully understand it all herself at the moment and had been ordered to keep her mouth shut. Obviously she was very afraid of her father and she was very traumatized obviously already, but especially that day. I'm sure her dad made sure to add to the traumatizing nature of the situation to silence Eileen.
I remember thinking at the time that George should not have been released and I believe the same thing today. Personally my memories of CSA were never gone I don't personally understand repressed memories because I've always had a super sharp memory in general for everything, all kinds of details. But I don't doubt that the phenomenon could occur in certain people based on a trauma response. RIP Susan 😢

I'm the opposite of this, I think. I remember what was done to me so vividly that I can tell you what was playing on the TV during the numerous assaults put on me by the same person right around 20 years ago. It went on through the years of my childhood (5-9) and I'm 33 now.
I remember all the sounds around me, like dogs barking. I remember the weather. I remember what I was wearing, down to the little cloth tennis shoes I had on one time because they were wet and cold from the rain outside. I remember the smell of gas because I was in the building we kept lawnmowers in.
And I distinctly remember laying there and looking at the police issued firearm on his police tactical belt that laid on the dresser beside the bed.
Unfortunately, I have forgotten a lot of the good things from when I was that age. I don't remember going to the beach for the first time, I don't remember numerous family gatherings that I attended, and so much more.
All my brain remembers is the trauma and the darkest days of my life. Some people will never understand what it feels like to lose so many amazing memories, only to be replaced by the ones that make me sick.

However it's events like this that keep people quiet. Would you want to come forward so many years later and tell only to have someone say you dreamed it up. Always be careful with repreased memories. Some are false. Aome are memoriea that they finally understand (or remember). Depends on hiw they arise. EMDR can alleviate PTSD, for example... but it can also modify memoriea since that isnwhat it is designed to do. Some mental issues can also cauae false memories. But some can be real... specifically if the meaning or understanding isn't well understood by a kid at a young age. It's important to take each case on it's own merits. But if they have a history of molestation... it greatly weighs towards guilt. But if a parent has NPD or the kid has it... a kid can easily be induced into delusional beliefs and weaponized. The problem is that if you deny the trauma, the kid (in this case) is cheated... but if you don't and the memory is wrong, they are still cheated. Either way... it's screwed up. The kid gets victimized either way. But sometimes you can prove it wrong. In about 80% of cases they proved it wrong in one study I remember reading about. Hypnosis can be like EMDR. I know someone whose friend had an impossible memory and swore that her family all molested her and it didn't match the possible facts. Careful with memories... don't always trust memories without testing them.

I don't believe her.. That's not to say that repressed memories aren't real because I've had them concerning my own abuse and without the help of psychotherapy.. But in this case,i believe she knew the little girl and had possibly mentioned it to her therapist who decided to hypnotize her and may have fed her certain information to keep her engaged and bring about a breakthrough.. During that time period there were so many false stories coming from kids and adults about things that were extremely horrific,it ruined lives and caused people to lose their jobs and be branded in a way that never truly was made right once it came out the manipulation and coercion that was happening..
For me,the memories come from a scent i may smell or a song, the way the wind touches my skin, it's always very random and extremely powerful..

Good evening, TCR Fam. Happy Easter Weekend to one and all. I hope everybody has had a safe and happy Long Holiday weekend.
So, are we back to a 5 PM CST release schedule again?
You were right about Repressed Memories, Amy; they might not be very reliable because it's all subjective. Is it reliable? Or is it easily dismissed? I don't know. That's another problem; we just don't know how the mind works.
Is Eileen Franklin credible? Again, I don't know. There are some major red flags in her recounting of the events, such as where her sister was during all of this, she got the time wrong, Susan Nason attended school, and was seen by her mother and other people after school was out. And then Eileen changed the details of the murder, that's another red flag.
So, did George Franklin kill Susan Nason after he m*****ed her? Again, I don't know.
Thanks for the video, Amy. I hope you and Chris had had a good and safe Holiday weekend.
Until next time, TCR Fam, be good, be kind and litter, and be genuine and take care of one another.

Back in the late 80’s & early 90’s these repressed memories were coming coming out all over the place. I have always been skeptical of these so called memories mostly because 99% of them have been proven to be false. I don’t necessarily blame the people who had the memories because they were mostly influenced by the mental health counselor they were seeing. A lot of these psychologists went about ruining people’s lives & some prosecutors recklessly brought people to trial without ant facts whatsoever.
