As a Uruguayan I remember this match quite well. I was so frustrated watching it. That was probably one of the worst moments in our football history, but that match also changed everything. Finally, our football association brought in a good manager whom not only worked with the major team but also with the U17 and U20 teams. He, Mr Washington Tabarez convince them to invested in infrastructure creating a modern training complex and our football returned to the place from which it should never have left. So actually i not only congratulate the Aussies on that victory, now with perspective I learn to appreciate it. You did us both a favor. I wish you the best in Qatar !!

Ever since that night on November 16, 2005 and up until Japan broke that hoodoo during 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying, Sydney's Stadium Australia was a good luck charm for the Socceroos.
Australia clinched three of their five straight FIFA World Cups including 2005 against Uruguay and outlasting South Korea in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup Final.

I don't know why I shed tears every time I see that Aloisi goal. Well, I do actually: No sporting event that I have ever witnessed matches this for sheer emotion. I had been to the Uruguay game in Melbourne four years earlier and the Iran game four years before that. We had been through such pain and heartache before, we almost expected yet another disappointment that night. But this time, the gods were with us and everything went as right as right can be. Without a doubt, this was Australian football's greatest ever moment.

To understand what this moment meant to the Aussies, you have to go back to four years earlier v this same Uruguay team. They won the first leg 1-0 in Melbourne, but then went to Montevideo in the 2nd leg and got hammered 3-0.
They had come close two other times: 1993 v Argentina with the now late Diego Maradona leading that squad winning that 2nd leg in Buenos Aires 1-0, and again in 1997 v Iran blowing a late lead at home in Melbourne and the Iranians would advance to France on the 2nd away goal they got in the 79th minute.
Needless to say, for the Aussies, this was finally knocking down the door and going to the Big show (World Cup).

As a 4-year old in 1974, my parents could not afford to send me to pre-school. So I watched lots of Sesame Street and Play School with my stay at home mother. Back in 1974 only 5-10% of 4-year olds went to pre-school! Still to this day, pre-school and all its issues (cost, rebates, age of entry, what is taught at pre-school and universal access, if any is wanted!) is still heavily debated here in Australia. But one pretty side bonus of this is that I watched the Socceroos play all three games at the 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany on full replay! But the Socceroos went on a 32-year drought and I said "If they made another FIFA World Cup in my lifetime I will buy Sesame Street CD's". On 17/11/2005, a day after this match I brought two Sesame Street CD's.

Conmebol should have more teams they shouldn’t need to play teams like Australia, the reason why is because in Conmebol you have Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia/Ecuador who automatically take the top 4. 5th would be a battle between Colombia, Ecuador, Peru & Chile. They play harder teams and getting 5th is good enough it should be a automatically qualify. In my opinion Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador & Chile are all superior to the likes of Australia and every Asian federation team except for maybe Japan and South Korea but all of the top 7 teams of Conmebol would easily qualify if they were put in any other qualifier spots.

As Uruguayan I remember the press talking really bad about Australia, doing jokes at the point that even I felt mad, 4 World Cup titles don’t give any right, Australia was unknown and as an outsider they achieve respect, now, no one jokes about aussies anymore.
Of course I wanted Uruguay to win but your jersey and fighting spirit is absolutely respectable and the best won that night, even if Recoba would have scored, somehow we would have lost.
I got mad when you got stolen for that “ penalty “ against Italy, otherwise you’d have reach semifinal for sure.
    Good luck !!!

I dunno about that. Italy were one of the best teams that tournament. We'd have only had a chance to win if we were able to hang on to penalties. While that penalty was probably unfair, it was the result we were probably going to cop anyway, so I don't feel too bitter about it anymore

Like I said before, Peru should’ve automatically qualified, FIFA dosent know how hard it is to get even 5th in CONMEBOL with the likes of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and sometimes Ecuador or Colombia. Getting 5th with those teams is not easy at all and it’s already good enough to qualify, even in 6th, Colombia should’ve qualified and 7th, Chile instead should’ve played Australia since they are the same level as them, Australia winning on penalties against Peru is just barely winning, if it was 2-legged, Peru would’ve won, because they are superior and every top 6 South American team is.

@@chechoreyes5438 yes in 2022 qualifiers I believe Peru was better than Australia. You can’t tell me Australia would’ve gotten 5th in Conmebol qualifiers. It just happens that the World Cup playoff wasn’t a 2 legged match and instead one final match in the scorching heat summer in Qatar. And it just happened to be that Australia put up a good match in that playoff match. And qualified to the World Cup.

      - beat Colombia 1-0 IN Colombia
