I am a huge fan of John Mackey !! This piece is ornamental as another person stated, but that’s the genius of his compositions!! I’m a piccolo player and I love what he’s written for the piccolo!!! The piece has a beautiful melody and is passed throughout the ensemble. Just magical!! Great performance of a beautifully written piece!!

This piece is supposed to be different from his others, in my opinion. This is something that you'd play for an opening number, tantamount to a march or something. It's simply diversity in his compositional portfolio, from my perspective.

Usually I like Mackey pieces, but this one just feels too ornamental and without any true melody or tune.

he uses a similar motive from the second movement of wine dark sea specifically the clarinet solo (the very opening one). its passed around the ensemble after the very opening fanfare and can even be heard in the intense middle section. the ornamental side of the piece is used to give the melody some life honestly it was a really fun piece to play!

Brannon Bravo I could definitely hear it, I just felt that the ornamentation was a little too much. It does seem like a pretty fun piece to play!
