B-52's were so so cool! This song would pack the floor in the alternative dance clubs. They have so many great songs: Love Shack, Legal Tender, Cake, Planet Claire, Private Idaho, Mesopotamia, Whammy Kiss, Roam, Girl From Ipanema Goes to Greenland. They are a rather quirky new wave band out of Athen, Georgia. And are definitely fun!
“I was at a dance club one night in Bermuda,” Lennon told Rolling Stone in an interview recorded three days before his death in 1980. “Upstairs, they were playing disco, and downstairs I suddenly heard ‘Rock Lobster’ by the B-52’s for the first time. Do you know it? It sounds just like Yoko’s music.” In particular, Cindy Wilson’s scream toward the end of the song was reminiscent of Ono’s approach. “I said to meself, ‘It’s time to get out the old ax and wake the wife up!’” Lennon said.
Welcome to America's favorite dance, party garage band from Athens, GA! Quirky, jerky, high energy fun. In 2019, this group celebrated 40 years of greatness, my first and only B52s concert experience was well worth the wait. They can still rock in their old age!
The B52's are absolutely unique. Your next reaction should be to 'Love Shack' which is an awesome song. Deadbeat Club is also great. One of the female singers, Kate Pierson, sings some great songs with other bands as well. Keep going with these guys, you'll love them.
Other reactors also said that this could have been co-opted for Halloween. Yes, beachy, correct! This was weird yet cool. New Wave was a movement after most of the world was suffering from disco fatigue. Quirky with a capital Q, but very catchy with a mean guitar riff. But when this came on, everyone rushed onto the dance floor. You should listen to their "Love Shack" for a comparison.
I went to the concert in Boston, where the B-52s were the opening act for the Talking Heads at the Berkeley school of music. 😊 it was a fantastic concert. “We opened for the Talking Heads at the Berklee Center in Boston just six weeks after our first record was released. We were a little scared of the audience so we kept our heads down and focused - and we danced like mad when there was a break!
I'm to the point where they went through the strange middle section and if you listen to it just from an audio standpoint, what they are doing with those backing vocals is just astounding. But I love how mesmerized You Are by it. One thing you have to stand is when he was saying down down down down down down down down down down, everybody on the Dance Floor would finally get a way to go down in their own unique way, and you didn't have to be good at limbo, even though I was fairly good at it, but for once everybody just had fun and just got low to the ground and then everybody popped up again when it took off. I have watched enough of your actions now to know that if you had just been dropped in there, and kind of got into the vibe of it, you would have felt right at home and started tearing up the dance floor along with everybody else. I just know it.
Easily one of the best songs ever! Maybe more than any other song this one *blew me away* when I first heard it. So I had the same reaction as you. It's fantastic to dance to in a big group dancing and allowing yourself to dance totally freely. I think you're right that they tried to be funny and they certainly succeeded. An astoundingly good song. Listen to it again, you'll hear more of the funny lyrics. More by the B-52's -- Planet Claire, Dance This Mess Around, Love Shack, Quiche Lorraine. Thanks Ace, it was fun seeing you both enjoy and be baffled by this, as we all were! 😄😊
I love this band. Their live shows are one big dance party. Yes. Lots of keyboard in this cool tune. A definite surf vibe. You should definitely check our more of their songs.
The B-52's were very well-known, and very unique. They were among the first wave of "New Wave" in the late 70's, and were among the earliest videos on MTV.
I love them! Lots of fun memories with this group and this song, at high school parties we would all dance like crazy and when he said the down down part everyone would drop to the floor and jerk all around like crazy flailing lobsters ha! Imagine a room full of people on their backs kicking their legs and waving their arms around ha! It was a real thing back then in high school and some college circles at house parties.
It's 100 style and this is from early on, it was one of their first big hits, but those first two albums with rock lobster and Planet Claire and all that, were huge. But I would say Love Shack also was mind-blowing. And then they had other hits sprinkled along the way. I don't know how familiar you are with the talking heads or Roxy Music but Brian eno, an amazing influencer in his own right, produced a bunch of cool bands but one of them was on one of their slightly later albums, the one that has Love Shack he produced that. And then Love Shack predominantly features the backing singers, who take lead and it's so richly produced and it's so funky and it's so fun and it still has all of those same quirky rhythms and Tempo changes to it. I just know you would love it. Love Shack baby, that's the name of the actual song I'm talking about.
The B-52's were new wave, but they were also Rock-a-Billy (listen to bands like the Cramps if you have any doubts). Whatever you want to call their music, it was all about dancing.
Yep, definitely a surfer music vibe. And allusions to surfer movies like Gidget and beach movies like Beach Blanket Bingo, wrapped up with a trip to the Aquarium while on LSD.
Yeah, much of their early sound had a 60s B-movie, Beach Bingo Horror film vibe. Not _The Exorcist,_ but _The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-up Zombies._
OMG! Lol These guys are pure fun. They have 2 other big hits, "Love Shack & Roam" I was in Junior High when this came out. On the Rock N' Roll side of New Wave Genre was ushered in by, "The Cars" Then we got, "The Go Go's & Missing Persons". Super fun reaction. Peace
Great choice, my favorite song by them. Love shock is pretty cool too but I love rock clubster This one brings back a lot of great memories of some fun times thanks for. The flash back
Didn't need to ask questions about this song back in the day. Anyone with half an ounce of brain back then was taking it as it was meant to be: just a goofy, fun, song. Don't understand how so many reactors today are looking at it in a state of perplexed confusion. We truly lived our lives in a world very different from this one.
Ok...welcome to the B-52s. What to hear next: Here is your best bet. All of the cool people...will recommend '52 girls' from this very same album. Fred is good...but the girls can sing like crazy! And with even better rockabilly (surfer) guitar. Like totally, man.
CSN&Y is fine, unless it just Crosbk, Stills and Nash. Neil isnt always with them. On Bobs songs, the lyricscan change from one recording to the next, he changed things up a lot in concert so don't be surprised if things don't match
Es gibt nur 2 Möglichkeiten: Du verehrst oder hasst B52s. Ich verehre Sie. Für Ihre ersten 3 Alben (1979 - 1981). There are only 2 options: You adore or hate B52s. I adore this band. For the first 3 albums (1979 - 1981).

Don't forget Give Me Back My Man
And he was a mongaloid

The B-52's "Love Shack" (Official Music Video)...Nuff Said.

Fun song and the band is rocking the “F” out. Bro, every time you laughed had my cracking up so hard. 🤣

Always a fun ride with The B-52's !!! Dance this mess around is my jam - Ace you would LOVE the whacky tunes of D.E.V.O. as well. #whipit

So many great memories at college when we would go out and when this was played everyone went crazy on the dance floor. It’s alternative/punk
The B-52s were just absolute FUN! How I miss those days.
I got to see them on their farewell residency in Las Vegas this year. They were a lot of fun!
Great band and song, true originals
The B-52s are so much fun! Love Shack will get you dancing!
Fantastic!
I love them! Gets the B-52s immediately? He's a real one! 😉
"Rock Lobster" was well-received by critics, and went on to place at No. 147 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list in December 2004.
Love Shack should be next.
Yeah, much of their early sound had a 60s B-movie, Beach Bingo Horror film vibe. Not _The Exorcist,_ but _The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-up Zombies._
If you were having a party in your dorm room at college and things were rather dull, just put on Rock Lobster and there was instant dancing and fun!
In 1985 James Brown had a popular hit, "Living in America". Sometime later "Weird Al" Yankovic made a parody
"Living with a Hernia" Great Fun.
Check out Dance This Mess Around and or Planet Claire 🔥😀
*The guy lead singer Fred Schneider also has a funny video and song named Monster 😂
Vote - Dance this mess around FTW
Yes!!! There’s nothing like early 80’s B52’s!
I hated this song when I first heard it. But now I love it!! 😁
Top 20 song of all time !
Video for Love Shack is a must for everyone. Roam is another great song.
Peace

This song is so fun
Great choice, my favorite song by them.
Love shock is pretty cool too but I love rock clubster This one brings back a lot of great memories of some fun times thanks for.
The flash back
Yes, it is meant to be funny, but also fun... bouncy, quirky, random, and different. That's the appeal, and you got it - and it got you!

Fred is good...but the girls can sing like crazy! And with even better rockabilly (surfer) guitar. Like totally, man.
ok, more content like this? Try Surfin Bird (Bird is the Word), 1963 by the Trashmen!
Yes Ace you have a good ear 😅 that was a good get your butt up and dance song and have fun.😅
Everytime I see somebody react to this, I wonder how many younger folks know what tanning butter and a bikini whale are?
This is all about fun. DANCE!
