  • 1. Crackling - Static noise during low-frequency sounds - Bass usually indicates a faulty speaker driver. If the fabric cover - grille is removed and you listen closely to both speaker drivers you will be able to identify which one is defective.
    2. Popping noise, similar to the sound of Tearing Fabric during low-frequency sounds - Bass usually indicates a faulty battery. This is occasionally accompanied by the battery level indicator going from full to empty (red blinking LED) in a matter of minutes. If the fabric cover - grille is removed and you listen closely to both speaker drivers you will not be able to identify from which speaker driver the popping noise is coming - it will be coming from both or alternate between the two. Often a faulty Li-Ion battery bulges; appears swollen or inflated because of the internal gas buildup. The faulty battery is unable to provide enough current to the amplifier to sufficiently drive the speaker drivers and sound distortion occurs. Sound distortion usually ceases or gets better while JBL Charge 3 is connected to the charger.

Thank you for this, was very helpful. I had the popping drivers problem when reaching a volume on music above half volume, I thought it could be damaged drivers but it’s the battery. Thank you !

Thank you for your comment, I'm glad you have found the video useful. Battery failure is very common with this model and also with JBL Flip 4.

super helpful! I've had my JBL Charge 3 for years. I was getting the popping noise and the battery was draining from full charge to red in under 10 minutes. I will order a new battery and replace it and hopefully that will fix the issue. Thanks!

Hi, thank you for your feedback. By what you have described, a new battery will definitely fix the issue.
Before ordering a new battery may I suggest you partly disassemble the Charge 3 and take a look at the battery connector - there are two types of battery connectors for Charge 3 (different polarities - different cable arrangement, types are CS-JML330SL and CS-JML320SL).

Hey @@GetGuiRepairs I finally got around to doing the repair and it worked like a charm! I took your advice and partially disassembled the unit to see which battery I needed before I ordered the part. Thanks so much for the help! I have a working speaker again :)
