"WANNA SEE ME DRINK THIS GUY???" might be the best line in the series. Devilish setup, flawless delivery, and the perfect introduction to an unforgettable, hilarious, chaotic sociopath of a character.
I remember waiting after 42 dropped eagerly anticipating this and almost the first line was that. Absolutely hysterical.

Gohan's DNA was not used for Cell in the original manga, it was just Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Freiza, and Cold. Which plays into why Goku had Gohan take over for the Cell fight. Goku had been looking for someone to pass his mantle onto, that person being Gohan, who is then shown to beat cell, an enemy made up of the previous generation.

@@maryz9319 I’m not sure how to feel about Gohan. I mean yes if I’m looking at this purely from a combat perspective, then yeah. But I don’t think Gohan just going off to live his life the way he wanted to rather than following his father’s footsteps is a negative. From that perspective he wasn’t shortchanged, that’s just not what he wanted for himself.
@@fewef32f I'm not sure about this, but I think Frieza and Cold try to attack Earth in all the timelines, regardless any time travel shenanigans. Trunks' intervention just makes it all easier to resolve in this one. That said, I can't remember what the explanation was in the manga.
@@fewef32f From what I recall, the DNA was collected with tiny robots that attached to Goku, Piccolo, and Vegeta which in turn then attached to Frieza at one point. It's left ambiguous as to when the robots attached to Cold, but it is implied that it would have been during the fight with Trunks.
@@Florceleste28 I think they're referring to the fact that (in the anime) it's specifically mentioned he got Frieza and Cold's DNA from their fight with Trunks. Whereas if he's from Trunks' timeline, they would have fought Goku instead. It's one of those details that had lead people into theorizing there's an unholy number of timelines in the DBZ universe.

Fun Fact: In the original series Cell has zero human DNA. Not even from Trunks or Gohan. He only has DNA from Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Freeza, and Cold.

I just recently watched the Cell saga and he did the Multiform and Tri beam. He has every Z fighter DNA except Yamcha. Because even 19 didn't know who Yamcha is.

I think the transmission joke works because it's not done in a mean-spirited way. 18 is clearly using the word as a shorthand without thinking about its alternate meaning, while 16 is too innocent to realize his mistake.

While that's true and as a trans person I found it funny, but the issue comes from the word being used casually in a video millions of people are going to watch. I don't like these kinds of words just out there like this. It's an unfortunate mistake and I don't hold blame on any of the writers.

The transmission joke to me just comes across as 16 being naive and misunderstanding 18.

I also like it because "I don't believe the car identifies as male or female" implies that it identifies as something.
Thats not the part they’re concerned with. What 18 refers to the transmission as is considered a slur by those effected.

The joke/implication is that the lines that Takahata did record "sucked" so much that Kaiser still used all his "sucking" noises or "used all his lines". Hope this helps!

I mean Piccolo actually asks Cell a lot of questions so why came up a couple of times before this joke.
You guys got past it pretty quickly but "Did you just spin kick him" is one of the jokes that KILLS me on every single rewatch because of Kami's delivery and how EXCITED piccolo is that he did it

Look for the 50 Shades of Grey read that T4S did back in the day with Doug Walker. There were times that Lani was doubled over laughing his guts out.

Nails va doesn't work with them anymore. He wanted to do a channel helping / teaching disabled kids and team four star thought it was too serious a topic for their channel and so pretty much forced him to sell out his share of the company to afford to do his own thing

After watching this I kinda want to see a HFIL-like animation of Kami and Nail living inside Picolo's head like it's a house or something, with Picolo himself being the disembodied voice.
Would be an interesting DragonShortz episode for sure. Even more so if it went over his ability to connect to the internet with his antennae and how that would look from their perspectives.

Taka is so fucking animated when doing his voices. I can't imagine how hard it was not to laugh seeing him just go off like this in recording sessions.

I like the idea of Cell's vocal delivery becoming more and more "perfect" as he progresses through his different forms - just more melodic and more song-like. (Which is made a little more obvious with Perfect's intro.)
I absolutely love that the way Cell is written in the abridged seems to have bled into the series proper.
I mean, half his lines in FighterZ are just him roasting everyone, *very reminiscent* of his Abridged version.

6:30 Cell is more of an assassin bug. Assassin bugs are a type of predatory weevil that actually stabs its prey with its proboscis, injects a digestive enzyme into its body that liquefies the insides which it then sucks up like an intestine smoothie. This leaves behind the prey's emptied shell, or in the case of insect larvae a desiccated, empty husk.
I love how later on around episode 59-60, Cell straight up calls Goku Kakarot. I hardly ever see people pick up on him using Vegeta's name when he's angry. I know y'all will get to that and explain it, I just love that little moment
Abridged Cell has some very genuinely terrifying tonal whiplash in his lines, and it's always been great.

My favorite Cell line and delivery in this episode is actually his response to Piccolo saying he gets a power boost from absorbing someone. Single word, “OMINOUS!”

I'm so happy Taka will be here for the rest of the commentary! There's something special about all the three DBZA writers together again watching and talking about their work and how this iconic series came to be
My head canon is that Cell has bug DNA to facilitate his transformations. Yeah, Freeza can to it too, but that's more self-imposed restrictions. Cell's transformations are more akin to an insect's metamorphosis from a larval stage to the adult form after they gathered enough energy for it.
Taka: “next villain is a cat, what does he do? Eats food”
Me: “so does that mean that Cat loves food? Yeah yeah yeah”
my head cannon is that gero used bug DNA like how Jurassic park used frog DNA to fill out the blanks
I love that they kept pausing the episode to really give a lot of commentary on this one. That's what we're here for! I hope they do it for the whole Cell saga.

@@darkalicornkingdoom3572 Well, they usually never pause the episode for commentary and usually apologize when they do. So, I’m saying I like when they don’t apologize and just keep commentating and giving their thoughts.
I agree the marathons are good for reactions, I want an in depth commentary.
More than anything, this episode completely justifies Nail and Kami sticking around.
11:15 As a trans man I still find it a bit funny, the reactions and character of the androids are GOLD. Plus it’s obvious it wasn’t meant from a place of ill intent. *Besides as a writer/animator myself we all grow and learn.
Also my (VERY supportive) dad somehow made basically the same joke recently and I have no idea how when he doesn’t know this series. Suffice to say I grew up with dark jokes with no real racist, etc. intentions behind them.
While I’m at it, I loved the Freaky Alien Genotype (albeit better), and I love this series!
At a certain point, people are just searching for an excuse to be offended. When they are offended by "tranny" being a car transmission and a sexual identity, they have reached that point. Everyone needs to just settle down.
This honestly might be one of the best written episodes y'all did, no shade to any others, but y'all CRUSHED this introduction.
1:24 I still remember flipping to one of the two Spanish stations in the late 90's and seeing this scene, and going "Oh crap, is that Piccolo? And who the hell's that behind him? What the fuck, did he just _drink Piccolo's arm?!_ Wait, _did Piccolo just rip his goddamned arm off?! _*_DID IT JUST GROW BACK?! WHAT THE FUCK?!"_*
That was when I became a lifelong DB fan. Wrestling is _trying_ to emulate that and tbh I wish they wouldn't, there can only be one GOAT on the mountain.
I mean, if you think about it, many of the younger wrestlers grew up with Dragonball as part of the media they regularly saw, so it makes sense they'd try to emulate parts of it. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
I think the exact opposite, I think Wrestling should try emulating it HARDER THEN EVER BEFORE!
You want to know when WWE was at its best? When they were fucking burying people alive in coffins and literally teleporting around the ring with super natural abilities, when there was active cult shit going on, and wrestlers were literally powered up by the hype or boos generated by the crowd around them.
Honestly I find most modern day wrestling incredibly boring because of how realistic they are trying to be while also sticking to the same played out "Oh I hate this wrestler because in this match he kicked me for some reason." BS story line, sure there are some super natural creeps in WWE but they aren't nearly as played up as Undertaker, Boogey man, or Kane was... though Kane was made into a joke pretty much his whole career despite how intimidating he was.
Give me a story line where the new baby face has to wrestle his way into defeating the possessed bodies of other wrestlers to defeat his rivals ghost that shows up at the heavy weight champion title match or something, I want more weird and stupid anime plot lines in my wrestling matches damn it!

They did. Seth Rollins buckle-bombed him into a barricade and he ended up fucking up his shoulders and essentially killing "Demon King".
@@Lenoh That's close but not nearly enough to what I talked about, The Demon was basically a 'Power Up' for one wrestler but not to the insane degree that I described and it wasn't the entire hook of a plot line, just something the guy pulled out to make matches seem more intense.
Bray Wyatt was looking really promising and I was actually interested in seeing where his gimmick would go, but unfortunately like Ryan above said, it was also brief.
I am more so talking about insane plot lines for wrestling that involves straight up magic or occult bullshit as the main hook of it, if the Demon came back I'd want to see it on other wrestlers as its original host has to wrestle them to get it back into himself, Or to have dumb magic rituals being casted outside the ring while two wrestlers fight it out, I don't want the plot hook to be Two wrestlers having a hissy fit at each other for the 500'th time in a row, I want the anime super natural bullshit to be front and center!

I'm a trans man and I don't have a problem with the transmission joke because it doesn’t deminish the concept of someone being transgender. I also think it's very good word play.
18 is clearly referring to the transmission when she says tranny. 16 takes 18's statement in with a different definition of tranny than what she meant. 16 isn't disrespectful either because he's basically asking why 18 is bringing gender binary into a conversation about the truck with no clear gender presentation. It makes his realization that 18 was referring to the truck transmission all the funnier because 16 himself admits, 'wait, my bad.'
Yeah, tranny is not something I would want to be called because I think it sounds demeaning. However the most widely known definition of tranny is in reference to being a transgender individual or someone who crossdresses even if it is a slur. Which is why I think this joke is funny because the denotative meaning of tranny being used is the less widely know shortening for transmission.

@@lollikabosso.w.n7153 Honestly, the modern concept of a slur doesn't help anyone but bigots. The issue is that polite society doesn't carefully use slurs, it never uses slurs. Slurs have become so taboo that even just talking about them in a normal conversation is a touchy subject. The "Freaky Alien Genotype" word and the shorting of "Mental Retardation," for example, carry a lot more negative weight now than 20 years ago simply because society decided to redefine them from insults to slurs and I think the issue is we've gone from hearing it all the time to only hearing it when someone means it. There needs to be a middle ground that softens the negative weight of these words through usage while still respecting those that the word targets.

Vegeta talking about his potential self being stronger is one of my favourite lines of the show. Top 5 100%. First time I heard it I was howling for about 10 minutes.
This is the line I always use to explain how good DBZA is to people who haven't watched it. It's funny and on point as to who Vegeta is in both the anime and manga.
When Cell stabbed that rich guy and drained his fluids in front of Piccolo while he was begging for his life, that shit haunted me.

Guys I am 46 and grew up on DBZ. I have to say the whole DBZA Cell saga is a part of my life at this point,
bonded with my son with this stuff and will cherish every episode forever. Literally the best.
I look forward to these every Saturday like I used to look forward to watching the Ocean dub when I was a kid every Saturday too. Also 17:00 THIS is the first time I’ve seen them legit laugh and this is the most genuine moment in all of these interactions. I love it

@@lanewright1143 I mean, while on one hand I'll freely admit Takahata101's humor isn't for everyone, I agree with the other reply to your comment more strongly: Taka was one of the three main writers for DBZA alongside Lani and Kaiser and absolutely deserves to be in on videos discussing their shared work. Debatably even more so with at least the first full video he was in (the Episode of Bardock one) and this one as he literally both helped to script and voiced the protagonist of said movie and the main villain of this arc as it moves forward. Hell, if it wasn't for Taka, we wouldn't have Hellsing Ultimate Abridged either, as that was mostly his idea, and HUA is debatably *better* in many ways than the original Hellsing Ultimate. If he's not your cup of tea/alcohol/whathaveyou, that's fine and even understandable, but he's too linked to this part of the series for them to not have at least tried to get him into the states to record the videos covering the rest of the Cell Saga (as an aside, he is Canadian while the TFS studio is in the US, so that would be why he wasn't part of it sooner, travel time and distance)

Peter says he cant help chase Miles and Miguel responds with: “no. you stay here. I’ve had just the right amount of you for today.” point being, curtis is hyperbolic, but i can imagine that he is a fountain of ideas.

Cell's "Well good for you you're wrong." is something I constantly quote since seeing this episode lmao.
To this day, I still quote, "Well good for you, your wrong!' In the imperfect Cell voice. I love that line so much.
The three of them together and just instantly being able to rip on each other so wholesomely is the reason why DBZA was, and still is so successful! I wish you all could finish this series as i feel there are some jokes you SPECIFICALLY had reserved for The Buu Saga! Oh well, maybe in the next iteration of the universe we'll be able to get that! Taka’s Cell gave me a whole new appreciation for that character. Made me go back and watch his intro in this series, the sub and the dub. And all throughout, Imperfect Cell might be most legitimately scary Dragon Ball villain. You never know what’s coming next with him.

Honestly that end part with Vegeta is probably my favorite Vegeta moment in DBZA. It sums his character up perfectly and is so hilarious that the first time I watched this I was laughing hysterically for a minute and a half atleast, and then cracking up thinking of it for the rest of the day.
I'm honestly surprised this didn't get a callback to Goku's Yoshi line from season 1. Cell's green, he came out of an egg, and he eats people.
Goku didn't spend enough time around Cell, only met him when he was Semi and didn't need to absorb people, and Perfect didn't pop out eggs.
Turns out Taka wasn't just ready to play Cell, he was born for it.

This trio gosh they are hilarious together I'm dying this episode non stop. The movies with Taka were 10/10 but this turned it to 11. I swear the cell intro episode could have gone for hours and it would not of disappointed. KUDOS

2) I never realised Beetlejuice was an influence. But now knowing that I can't NOT hear him.
It's weird, but seeing Taka in real life here, he kinda gives me classic Jim Carrey vibes with how he reacts to things.

Cell doesn't really now techniques just because he has people's DNA, he had to actually learn them in some way, most likely due to Dr Gero having some kind of device in Cell's tank to playback recording of all the fights that happened over the years. He canonically uses the solar flare despite not having Tenshinhan's DNA after all.
