My wife and I plan to go to Santorini in September so appreciate your tips - my only small criticism is that although you are very nice I think your video was a little longer than needed :)
If you want to save more money, Kamari and monolithos on the other side of the island are even cheaper. They have nice beaches too and you can get to oia and Fira very quickly too
Great ideas! It's one of my favorite places having last been there in 1994 (I lived in Athens for 5 years and visited the island 5 times). It's heavenly and a down to earth place, not hotel manufactured. U can take a taxi with your luggage to the hotel. There are stray cats but they get plenty of food because of the restaurants. Greeks don't believe in killing the animals. I miss Greece!
Jessica LT wow that is amazing that you lived in Athens for 5 years! Yes I truly love Santorini, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. The cats are amazing! We really loved thy aspect and it shows how kind the Greeks are to take care of them. They are in perfect condition! Thanks for your comment!
What a stunning place it looks like Santorini is to visit! Great video! Keep on smiling and creating! If you get a chance, we'd be honored if you swung by our channel and checked out our latest upload as well!
Thank you for the nice information. How can I move around in Santorini? If I get a villa in Megalochori, Santorini, Greece, is it a good place to stay at?
You're welcome :) To answer your question - There are local buses all over the island, as well as car and scooter hire. We saw a lot of tourists hiring cars and scooters to get around. I think the prices were reasonable enough from memory. The buses are obviously cheaper but takes a little longer due to the stops. I can't comment on whether Megalochori is a good place to stay because we didn't get down that far, but I suggest you search reviews on Trip Advisor :)
Last 28 times I visited Santorini, I have rented a studio in Perissa, and for the money spent on the cheaper accomodation I usually rent a car. Cost for 21 days car-rental has been around 500 Euros with full insurance. Hotels in Megalochori may be a bit more expensive than Perissa or Kamari, if they have a Calderaview. Many buses pass Megalochori, and You can check the tourlist at "KTEL Santorini". There is not that much to do in Megalochori, and NO beaches, so if You want to go for a swim, You need a transport to the beaches, mainly located at the east- or south coast
Samira Habibi yes we walked up them just for something ‘touristy’ to do. I must admit it was not fun! I don’t know if it’s that I had two kids in tow, that there we’re donkeys we had to pass that could have easily knocked us over, or that I’m not that fit but it was hot, smelly and a little frightening at times. My suggestion is to walk down them if you want to admire the view, because it’s less work and you can dash past the donkeys faster than trying to run up steps and then catch the cable car back up which also gives incredible views. Just an idea!
The cable cars are a a great way to get up with luggage if your coming to Santorini via the port. I wouldn’t recommend trying to get luggage up the steps... there is about 300+!!
Tegan McPherson thanks for the reply. I will be arriving by port as well as meeting there for the Caldera Cruise. I am not in the greatest shape either. I will look into the cable car once I get there. I am sure Fira is not as bad, it’s just the getting up with the luggage once arriving.
WHY,when you open your video, do you recommend that people ON A BUDGET stay in thira, that is madness, true it is cheaper than oia, but surly you should be recommending both perissa or Kamari . Ideal for families with children as they have beaches etc, oia and thira are places to visit for the day, defiantly not places to stay, if you say, if you have a budget to stay within and if you have children
Simon Joyce thanks for your input on this. I really appreciate your opinion and I think others will too. For me the decision was between Oia and Fira because they are the most popular and picturesque- which is part of the allure of Santorini. We found very affordable accommodation in Fira, compared to Oia- that was my point. But I think you are spot on that if people are on a very strict budget and have ‘little children’ then the beaches are maybe a little more affordable and practical. My family had an amazing trip to Santorini for an affordable price without having to sacrifice comfort or location so I wouldn’t say it’s madness to suggest Fira over Oia 😊
I am not sure how much You said You pay per night, but prices are usually much lower in Perissa or Kamari. For a Studio for two persons (and possibly a child in extrabed) we pay around 25 Euros per night during Mid-season and 30 Euros per night during Highseason. It is very difficult to find studios in Fira or Oia to match those prices, but in Karterados You may come close?
TheBalerod thanks for your comment. It’s great you have so much information on Santorini! I am sure Perissa or Kamari are cheaper but we were travelling in the low season too don’t forget. Also the beaches would have been too cold for us then, so staying somewhere like Fira was great-‘lots of shops and other things to do and see. Great views of the Caldera, right near the cable cars... we loved it. We had two children travelling with us, so we got a two bedroom apartment. I’m just giving my one opinion - Fira is great!! If people follow my one piece of advice to stay in Fira over Oia, they’ll save money, but surely anyone on a very strict budget looking at hotels will search elsewhere as well if they feel Fira is still not within their budget. I know I did my research thoroughly before booking my accommodation so I knew exactly what I wanted, and where on the island I wanted to be.
Teslandia A. Understandable. It was very confronting for me and my kids. I understand people have traditions, but this is something I hope the locals of Santorini will give up sooner rather than later. Just my opinion- and everything else about the place was wonderful
Don't go....if you think that bothers you...this is a tradition and a coulture that has been going around for 100s of years...and I assume all you vegan lovers think the same way. So wake up to yourselves and enjoy the history that goes with it. That's what makes Greece and Santorini so special. Enough said..
How can transportation by donkeys be considered animal abuse is really ridiculous to say the least! So I guess loading people and luggage on camels, horses, donkeys etc.....all is considered animal abuse! Ridiculous...
Thank you for the really great information. I'm going with kid, and definitely on budget. Your sharing did help a lots.
Kim T.J thanks for watching and your lovely comment! Hope you have a wonderful time :)

Thank u for being a animal lover :)
So did you walk up the steps instead of using a donkey? I am like you, I am an animal lover and I don’t want to use the donkey to go up.

Tip No. 1: Don't show "5" like that in Greece! :p
MiaLens I had to look up what you meant- didn’t learn that while there- thankfully. Yes very good tip!! 😅
It was just so funny, right there in the beginning! Haha It was an awesome video! Thanks for making it :)
MiaLens haha, ooops! 😂 thanks for watching! Xx
