I work on Open Ocean Tankers, and that shit happens way more than you think. Some from alcohol (US ships banned booze after the Exxon Valdez) on foreign flag, but human error due to sleep devrivation or distracted by phone is the highest. That’s for commercial shipping, regular boating its 4sure alcohol and general retardation.

To answer Charls "How does this happen"- "The Cost of Concordia" is a great video on it by Internet Historian. Basically, theres a lot of nepotism in the cruise industry. Concordias captain was quite literally the owners son, and spent his time with hookers and booze instead of driving the ship. Pure negligence.
It really shows how you can basically create easy well paying jobs that essentially run on auto piolet and people will still find a way to screw it up. Those enormous ships can be captained by a 22 year old out of the navy but it doesn't matter if half the crew doesn't speak the same language and the helmsmen is a mong, while the captain is on a no sleep blow fueled bender.
It really is wild. They could hire guys straight out of the navy/coast guard and never have a problem. But its more of a flex to give some d!ckhead's screw up son at the country club a position of "importance". Surely that hasn't gotten anyone killed ever.

Small boats cross the Atlantic all the time, particularly sailboats. The smallest boat to cross the Atlantic ocean was in 1993 when a 5 foot, 4 inch (yep, not a typo - 5' 4") long boat called "Father's Day" completed the journey while piloted by some nut named Hugo. Gas powered yachts of at least 30 feet can also cross oceans but they need to have the properly designed hull to do so which creates the proper displacement not just for handling the seas but also for handling the amount of fuel and other supplies necessary to facilitate such a voyage. Today's modern "super yachts" can - and do - cross oceans. Doing so with relative ease and equipped to handle rough seas if it's otherwise unavoidable. Although capable, you don't often see yachts crossing the Atlantic, which is typically crossed by sailboats. On the Pacific though, it's much more common and there is a larger community/culture of ocean crossing super yachts. Rant over, pretend you care. Vicious basterds.

Was in San Diego first time and riding close to a military base. Was looking out between two buildings toward the ocean at the sky then suddenly felt the the car being shifted all around, got instant vertigo and thought we were in an earthquake. Quickly realized the ‘sky’ was actually the side of a giant cruise ship and as it bobbed it screwed with my reference point.

For me it would have to be a 80-100ft re-purposed SWATH catamaran workboat, marine aluminium or steel construction. There was one for sale 5-6 years back, they were supposed to be a whole fleet but only made 3 and this one was made into a long range no frills cruiser with a low budget so the interior was fairly spartan on yacht standards, looked like an average home inside. But it had over 10000NM range at decent cruise speed (I think it was 10 or 11knots). You could drop two marine containers on the weather deck on it and still have room to walk around them, it was almost as wide as it was long...1.5 million dollars, absolute steal whoever bought it. Probably cost that much just in materials and work to make the hull.
