Would be interested in seeing Courtney spend a day in op shops purchasing stock without guidance. It's absolutely wonderful to watch you help her in the developing phase of the business, but I imagine it's not your intention to accompany her for the entire duration of her eBay journey. It'd be really insightful to watch you critique the things she picks up / misses while purchasing independently.
Also: 1. Suggest curving the white background material from the horizontal (table) up the back (wall) to eradicate the 'join' line at the back. Depending on the lighting, it can make the item look like it's 'floating' in space. 2. Some items look better with a black background.
I know Courtney is having a slow start, but I’m sure with a little time and your great teaching skills, she will be successful! I wish you two only the very best in sales! Your so very deserving! I believe if you put your heart and hard work into anything, you will have great success and enjoy your careers! ❤❤
I dig this series because I just moved to a new state. I moved my whole life somewhere else. Part of me feels like I'm starting over again on ebay/reselling. I started reselling last October after working in.. a specific industry in northern California......😏😉 The breakdown of expenses is very relatable. I appreciate it, y'all. ✌&❤&🤘
If she has a kitchen overhead light over a kitchen table that is bright, she might do well with that for her photos. My kitchen has some recessed lights that provide good light. There are some shadows but not as harsh as that one book you showed. Also, in one of my bedrooms I put daylight bulbs in the light fixture of a ceiling fan over a bed which creates a good place to shoot photos also. You can be creative without getting light boxes right away. Maybe her bathroom has some counter space with bright light overhead and you'd get reflected light from the mirror. Put a poster board down for a clean background. Just some ideas. She's off to a quicker start than I did 18 months ago!
Great learning video again. Thanks Courtney for taking us along on your journey of being a new seller and thanks Matt for being her mentor. I’m enjoying the series as I have a lot to learn. I didn’t quite understand about the square photos, am I able to do that on an iPhone 8 please? Sorry if I sound stupid.
One way to soften, if not totally remove, harsh shadows is to use reflectors. This need not be complicated or expensive; a bit of foil stretched over a sheet of cardboard and propped in the right position would help (although this can simply lead to multiple shadows if not careful) alternatively, for a softer effect, just use another sheet of white board as close as practical to the item on the side towards which the shadows fall. This is the method I use. When it comes to artificial lighting, I find a couple of cheap ring lights work fine, especially combined with white board reflectors and have the advantage that they can run from 'powerbank' battery packs avoiding the need for trailing cable. For years I used big bulky (home made!) light boxes but they tied me to shooting at my photo station and some oddly sized or shaped items simply didn't fit. The ring lights go wherever I need them!
Great series. It's difficult to hear Courtney, But it would be great to hear from her more often. It's her business so how does she feel its going, what have been her challenges and wins. Or is the series more about how to be an ebay mentor?
For Courtney’s lighting situation. If there’s a washing line on that balcony. All you have to do is hang a white sheet or white shower curtain and she’ll have beautiful consistent soft light over her setup. If there isn’t hooks for a washing line and it’s a problem for the landlord then just set up some removable 3M hooks and have a temporary one that she can put up as part of her photo setup. It’ll look mint!
I don’t have a shadow box. I notice that before noon before the sun is bright and tends to cast a lot of shadows, 1:1 setting and 0.07 exposure on the iPhone really helps get clear pictures.
That's awesome. Yeah, I tried to find something on Court's page. Shes a queen. There were only books at the time... it's always good to diversify and go for quality... I just wanted to say 1 thing -- in Canada, thrift stores caught on and increased prices dramaticalllllllly..... so be aware of that
When I tried to start an eBay store, I was throttled by eBay by both, them only allowing 10 items a month at first, until I emailed and requested more, and by them constantly withholding funds for 2 weeks. I am wondering if Courtney started with a new eBay store, and had the same issues?
100% agree. The free version is enough to fix up that first photo to draw in buyers if you don't want to buy the full version subscription. I couldn't get by without PhotoRoom.
Courtney should consider selling her own used stuff at home that she doesn't need. I sell my stuff I have finished using or no longer need. Cost is zero and profit is 100%.
Hi Matt, way to go helping Courtney with her business. I've got a quick question, I've heard it's not a good idea to use the "sell similar item" option, is this true? If so could you please explain it, in layman's terms? Thanks a bunch, for all your eBay tips, I'm learning a lot. Cheers Matt 😊
A lot of the sellers who recommended that are niche sellers who just sell in one category so they have a very particular way of doing their listings. For an everything seller, doing Sell Similar is definitely the way to do it. Just make sure to double check all the pre-filled fields since several of them will often be incorrect.
@@robertsonflipsales3979 Thank you so much, I appreciate you explaining it in layman's terms. I use sell similar quite a bit and was getting worried my account was going to get suspended or something. Cheers 😊
Just recently started tuning in.. Nice fun format .. looks like you are having fun working together. I don't however know who Courtney is.. is she the girlfriends / friend / someone who reached out for help starting an Ebay store? Just little back story
I notice that you are including Inventory purchases in the profit and loss spreadsheet (a common mistake by re-sellers). This is mixing up profit with cashflow - only the items that she has actually sold (COGS) should be deducted off the revenue. The inventory that has not yet sold is an asset and does not belong on a profit and loss. So her cashflow may be in the negative but her profit not necessarily so.
While the cash flow may be in the negative it's important (not least for the tax man) to remember that assets are also accumulating; not only remaining stock but any equipment and supplies. At the time of the video being shot, there are 69 items listed. They alone would make a big dent on the apparent deficit. I don't know enough about the tax rules in Australia to comment in detail but if valued at resale, based in her current average sale price, that alone would very move her into profit. Even if accounted at cost it's likely the stock would clear the negative cash flow.
Hey mate, probably a boring topic, but I would like to know as an ebay beginner what you can and cant claim on your tax return. Any info would be appreciated! Cheers for the content!
This experiment may be a good learning experience for some Ebay sellers. However, Aren't the sales unrealistic for a new seller with this the number of items? My assumption is a good number are purchased do to being seen on this RUclips channel.
She needs to list minimum 10 items a day to reach her goal possibly 15 items a day. What you put into it is what you get out of it. My general rule of thumb is if I wanna sell one listing I have to list three things because in my experience over the last 10 years on eBay there’s a 3X ratio going on. If I want to make $1000 a month I need a list $3000 a month and if I make over $1000 a month great but at least I’ll reach my goal.
