I love my G2, resolution, screen quality and 90Hz will definitely keep me satisfied for years to come. But it would be cool if you could upgrade the current fresnel lenses with aspheric lenses... But that's probably just a dream that will never come true.
@@gregprouse1173 not at all. It's extremely sharp and crisp. People have trouble finding the "sweet spot", primarily because they don't know how to fit the head strap. but this has also been improved (along side increased FOV) with a new gasket in the V2 version. (personally I bought an aftermarket gasket which is similar to the new one, however I didn't find the improvement to be exceptional. But that's probably because I learned how to fit the device on my head)
@@gregprouse1173 yeah, you're GPU can't push full resolution in most games. I would guess around 60-70% of the resolution more like it. you can force 100% resolution in Steam VR, but you might get a headache from the low fps. Also, VR can become blurry if you don't have perfect eye-sight. My brothers condition was reversed in the headset, in real life he has difficulties focusing afar. But in the Reverb G2 he had trouble focusing up-close. So there's definitely many parameters to consider when it comes to VR. I have perfect eye-sight and the Reverb G2 is increadibly sharp... not like real life, but for VR it's amazing. :)
the still image of the 8kx in the side by side at 3'58 isn't a fair comparison at all- it's a still of the 8kx in motion and blurred because of the motion- the icon for hellsplit arena in the side by side comparison for the 8kx is blurred but when you go back to the actual 8kx footage when the hellsplit arena icon is still/not moving and in the sweet spot at 0'36 it's much clearer and sharper than the G2 side by side still shot and very close to the vr-3 still shot in the side by side which is much more accurate- having the 8kx myself I know it's tack sharp most of the time especially with sharpening added with the FSR mod- go back to those two points in the video as proof and watch in 4k on a large screen- also the vr-3 has better edge to edge clarity vertically but less so horizontally- blurs much sooner on the horizontal plane (which may be related to the distortion of the aspherical lenses)- so all in all the 8kx is much better value at less than a quarter the VR-3 price, especially when the 8kx comes with a much bigger, immersion enhancing fov with clarity which is one of the best going and almost as great as te VR-3- certainly great enough for 99% of all vr games - what resolution did you set the 8kx to? increase moderately above 100% steam resolution and the ppd matches or surpasses the G2 anyway
Appreciate what you're doing here Seb but I still feel G2 and 8kx both become a blurry mess when you discover Varjo, not a popular opinion but that has been my experience.
G2 costs 450 compared to Varjo 3000 euro + hefty annual subscription + accessories(?). Massive difference. Still, as you already know (if you've actually tried VR), the G2 is FAR from a "blurry mess" - check out the many vids on this very channel.
@@g-maniac8670 Read my post - a product costing at least 7 - 8 times that of the G2 damn well better be better, lol. Next you'll be telling us that a Cheetah is faster than a Turtle.
Actually... I'd be really happy if Pimax (or someone) would come out with a spherical lens to replace the Fresnel lens in the existing Pimax 8KX. I bet a lot of other Pimax owners would go for that too!
1 year and 2 days after i received my G2 the right display started flickering. The retailer did NOT give me waranty. So I called HP, they did help me and send a new HMD witch I received the next day at home. I was so surprised by HP helpdesk. On topic, I dont think the price diff between the G2 an VR-3 is worth it to me.
In what resolution of the goggles did you make this comparison, because Reverb G2 work natively in 6k 6300x3300 for 100% Supersampling, and 4k for 50% Supersampling. The comparison should be made for the same set resolution of 3 goggles according to fpsVR. Was it so? 🤔🤔🤔
We want a consumer version. The great picture is also due to the high-res OLED display optically combined in the center giving the high 70 ppd together with the superior lenses. If possible we would also like 120 fps and higher FOV but less features and no subscription , it should be easy peasy.
Keeping in mind, the images seen in this video are only using the LCD screen too. A very good LCD screen at that. Completely agree with you on the rest too. :)
@@granthartley I actually saw a post from a worker at Varjo that the center high res screen is always is use (otherwise it would be black in the center). I just don't think it's optimized.
@@justaguydoinstuff Yes, I read that same post from the Varjo employee too. He insisted it was always on in steam VR apps. However, he later proved himself wrong and has confirmed via the Varjo software that it is indeed turned off unless supersampled beyond what our GPUs are currently capable of running smoothly at. There is a setting in the Varjo base software that allows the user to see which panels are being used/projected to at any one time. It shows 4 images when it is running a native app, but only the 2 peripheral screens when in steam VR (unless excessively supersampled).
I bought one!!!! Because I fly and it is great for Flight Sim! Yes, they need to make a commercial version but if you contact them there are ways to get this headset through their vendors.
The Varjo is an amazing VR headset - I would need to win the Lotto to buy one of those if consumers could even buy it - plus you have to pay a yearly fee. I have the HP Reverb G2 V2 and if the Sweet Spot was wider would also be good. Looking straight ahead in the G2 is good, but making my eyes look to the sides or up/down I can really see the blurriness of the lenses. I do SIM racing with the G2 and I move my head instead of just my eyes and works out pretty good, but I still notice the scenery to the sides being blurry. The Pimax is also too costly for me with needing to setup and use Base Stations and controllers at extra cost. Thanks for this video and great comparisons. Take care.
The Varjo VR-3 looks great, please make it cheaper, I've been waiting for the pimax to become less, but you have a great product, so many of us would buy it in preference.
I think the next phase for VR is going to be VR glasses, where it has the lenses and very thin LCD/OLED screens, super fast miniature cpu and some very light covering, which will make it possible to wear the "glasses" on daily basis and then even in a small studio apartment like mine it will convert it into anything I can imagine, it could be a 5 star hotel room, a room on the enterprise, a studio on mars and then further with "object recognition technology", that's bound to be invented, that will enable existing objects to be recognised in VR and then enable a VR room that a person can fully interact with and live in. I'm waiting for that. Please let me know when it's available for consumers 👍
Hello! I have the hp reverb g2 and a 2080super gpu, in simulators I go to 90fps... with an 8600k. I need a recommendation: should I improve the graphics card or should I buy the VARJO AERO? Thank you!
This all depends on what you do that could take advantage of it. Me I do virtual flying in DCS and I literally won't fly without VR now. It is a game changer.
It's an interesting comparison (I watched the original video) but each headset has a purpose. I have both the G2 and the 8KX. The G2 is the best at the price point hands down. The 8KX has the best FOV but doesn't match the G2 for crispness but has a bigger sweet spot. It's also twice the price of the G2. The Varjo clearly has superb clarity but is twice the 8KX price with a subscription plan that gamers don't need and no audio system at all so that's a miss. Therefore "Best" is subjective as ever.
Varjo is best, but over 3X the price of the 8KX when factoring in the subscription. 8KX > G2 when 8KX settings are dialed in. Very little clarity loss, bigger sweet spot, gorgeous colors.. and huuuuuge FOV. Not subjective at all. Can't use my G2 anymore with the toilet paper roll FOV. ; ) LOL!
I agree it is subjective, it pretty much always is. Also there is the issue of how much computing power you need to run each one. Sebastian even mentioned this with a setting on the Varjo at 8:55 where he talked about needing a 4090 to be able to run that setting. For those that don't know, the 4090 is the Nvidia 4090 graphics card not yet released and you will need a good bank balance to get one. In my humble opinion the G2 is at a sweet spot in giving excellent results on a standard gaming computer most gamers can afford. Increasing FOV, pixel's per eye add to what you need to run the headset, it's pretty much that simple.
@@tomholy Sebastian was refering to the usage of the additional high resolution focus display in the center of the screen of the Varjo, where he mentioned the 4090. This screen is not active in his setup, so he is basically telling: "Even without that additional high resolution screen (which is disabled on my system), the picture already looks amazing" And without the usage of this additional focus screen, it runs on current hardware. According to MRTV anyway.
@@ExtremCoxer Yes he has very good current hardware and I'm pretty certain it's better than the average gamer has. Thank you for explaining what he was referring to.
@@tomholy I had to say it, but the average PC gamer is probably best off with a Quest 2. G2 still takes a bit more horsepower, has crappy tracking, and isn't to my knowledge compatible with x570 mobos. But overall, someone looking for the best experience who doesn't have $5,500 for the VR-3 (insane), should be looking at the 8KX for now. 8KX factory settings are pretty bad, takes some tweaking to get the most out of it. At least it can be tweaked!
I wonder if both the HP Reverb G2 and the PIMAX 8KX would benefit similarly if they too had aspherical lenses instead of Fresnel lenses. I would love it if Varjo produce a consumer version for us gaming mortals even if it had a slightly lower resolution that could run decently on GTX1080 or above GPUs at a sub $1000 price point.
Looking forward to consumer products with aspheric lenses. Doesn't matter to me if it's varjo or another manufacturer to bring this to consumer market. (Even though I love multiple aspects of the VR3: good design of the headband, good resolution, aspheric lenses, FOV approaching FOV of the human eye, and very good hand tracking with the ultraleap gemini v5). I was aiming for the DecaGear 1, but if Deca can produce something similar to the Varjo VR3, I'ld be more than happy to increase my budget.
I want a consumer version of the VR-3, *including* the micro OLED. As for audio, I can mod earphones onto it, with the help of the audio jack. But please do something about the distorsion.
Most VR HMD r scrapping OLED for LCD cause LCD is better than OLED for colour. Compare the CV1 with its OLED screen and the rift S with LCD. a lot clearer on the LCD rift S. Same with TV's my samsung 1080P 3D LCD is far better quality than my 4k LG OLED.
To be “clear,” aspheric lenses are (usually) custom designed lenses with non-spherical surfaces. Spherical surfaces are much easier to grind in a lens shop, but they suffer from spherical & chromatic aberrations. Spherical lenses are still better than fresnel lenses however, which suffer from god rays. I expect aspheric lenses will be the trend going forward, possibly using injection molded optical plastics to keep the cost down
The biggest problem with G2 is a sweet spot Pimax 0:48 vs G2 1:28 vs Varjo 2:30 - just look at the upper left corner and these labels. With G2 everything is excellent but in the very narrow window - the sweet spot is so small that everything outside it is just a mess :/ The conclusion is: just wait as some company will make a headset like Varjo but for the people. Technology is here, so this is just a matter of time.
at 3:56 the 8kx is still out of focus in this video, the Hellsplit icon is very blurry. If it was really like that, nobody would be happy with the 8kx!
I think the biggest difference is the aspheric lenses, the distortion in other headsets is caused by the fresnel lenses. unfortunately I'd imagine that aspheric lenses cost 1-300 per eye on top of everything which is why they are not mainstream
Not sure why you would compare a headset costing $3,600 (base stations and controllers not included) to one that retails for $599 and is often sold discounted for $299.
According to Road to VR, VARJO is announcing a new product on Oct 21st. What do you say MRTV, any hope that our begging for a consumer VR VR-3 has been answered? Do dreams actually com true? What's the scope? Can we start the hype train? :)
Very nice test, thank you. It confirms what I have observed when I rented the G2 for testing. There are some advantages and disadvantages to VR. However. The G2 is considered the best visual quality among the affordable headsets. I don't know what I expected but I was kind disappointed. First, everyone knows that the image quality of fresnel-lenses is poor. I would pay ~400$ more for getting higher quality lenses. Second the PD is adjustable (which is a very nice feature) but also only to 67mm PD. My wife (optrician) measured 68.2mm for me which means I will always have issues getting highest possible sharpness. Third there is no dioptre correction which makes it hard for ppl with hyperopia since they would heave to wear their glasses under the headset. I really would love to spend the few bugs on the G2 but I think VR is not quite there yet.
That's a rather suspiciously odd way of thinking. You need to reasonably balance reality with expectations - something that should be built in for most folk. It sounds like you might have more of a connection with Varjo than you're letting on ;)
@@ChrisM541 Using actual achromatic lenses instead of cheap fresnel lenses would improve the quality drastically without increasing the price too much. I don't know where I need to "balance reality with expectations". Varjo is simply too expensive. Not even the G2 is affordable considering that you will need to buy a decent graphics card for it.
I NEED a consumer version of the VARJO VR-3 for the current prices of that headset and just the headset alone along with the subscriber is outworldly ridiculous (5000euros plus 1500euros per year subscription). They MUST release a consumer version that we can purchase for $2,299 after tax including two handsets, chargers and all other necessary connections and appliances. This also need to not come with a subscription, screw that! We want the very best of the best and at that price I'll buy it today. Heck. I'll be happy to do a review of the Varjo VR3 if the company reach out to me. Maybe they could cut me a special deal on one of their used models under second hand sales or something. I don't know know but I want that device.
Personally I would rather see a HP Reverb G3. Even if it was twice the price of the current G2 (which would make it around $1000), surely it would be better value than say a Varjo for $2000 or I doubt $1500. If HP managed to fix 3 issues I find annoying with my G2. One being lack of ventilation ducts (needs fan also maybe), as when trying to do any high energy gameplay or fitness programs in colder weather the headset fogs up terribly (also fogs prescription lenses making it twice as bad), to the point you cannot see. Second being the smaller controller buttons (usually used for bringing up SteamVR menu) rattle in the housing and can inadvertently activate when moving controller around rapidly (very annoying), also the tracking rings are a bit on the large side and can clash together (whole controller could be a bit sturdier). Thirdly as Seb has mentioned before the tracking needs to be changed to infrared and not visible light and camera positions altered slightly, currently while pretty good I find the tracking glitches in and out when hands are held straight down by your side (I hold my hands crossed in front of me when at rest to avoid this problem). The Reverb G2 is my first headset so I have nothing to compare it to with regard to FOV, however I don't have any issues with it's picture at all, it has amazing clarity and bright colors. However if there was a G3 one would assume some improvements would be made in the lenses/sweetspot/FOV departments as well. Come on HP show us what you can do!!!
The Varjo looks fantastic but the max IPD is not over 70mm, and it is not available for gaming. Maybe okay if they increase the max IPD and release a gamer version. HP Reverb G2 has a face plate that is too narrow for a larger head and the max IPD is too small at 68mm, it is uncomfortable, with a narrow FOV. I've tried the Vive Pro 2, it has too small max IPD and a very small lens focal point. I brought a Pimax 8KX and I think it is the best choice, fantastic flexibility with adjustment to many settings, max IPD 70mm + software increase, and lenses with a large focus area, and it runs fine on a RTX2080.
Varjo: We definitely need a consumer version of this. Drop the focus display and the annual subscription which serves no purpose. At 1500 you would have a winner and still be profitable!
Its worth holding out for a headset that is affordable that looks like the VR3 for consumers. The 8KX or G2 doesnt compare whatsoever. I believe Oculus will release something close fall of 2022.
As a fellow glasses wearer, the answer is yes 😛 without glasses or prescription lens inserts, VR will not be as clear as it can be (just like outside VR)

@@PixelShade Thats interesting because I still found it not so but then Im running a gtx 1080ti....Im hearing this could also be the issue?
Varjo, please make a consumer version of this headset 😍
Thanks a ton for spending the time making this comparison!
Let's just hope that the Varjo performance is a signal of what's to come in the next generation of headsets from these manufacturers (hp, valve, etc.)
Hey buddy, a side by side comparison
the still image of the 8kx in the side by side at 3'58 isn't a fair comparison at all- it's a still of the 8kx in motion and blurred because of the motion- the icon for hellsplit arena in the side by side comparison for the 8kx is blurred but when you go back to the actual 8kx footage when the hellsplit arena icon is still/not moving and in the sweet spot at 0'36 it's much clearer and sharper than the G2 side by side still shot and very close to the vr-3 still shot in the side by side which is much more accurate- having the 8kx myself I know it's tack sharp most of the time especially with sharpening added with the FSR mod- go back to those two points in the video as proof and watch in 4k on a large screen- also the vr-3 has better edge to edge clarity vertically but less so horizontally- blurs much sooner on the horizontal plane (which may be related to the distortion of the aspherical lenses)- so all in all the 8kx is much better value at less than a quarter the VR-3 price, especially when the 8kx comes with a much bigger, immersion enhancing fov with clarity which is one of the best going and almost as great as te VR-3- certainly great enough for 99% of all vr games - what resolution did you set the 8kx to? increase moderately above 100% steam resolution and the ppd matches or surpasses the G2 anyway
@@ChrisM541 I own Varjo, trust me G2 is unbearable with tiny sweet spot.
@@g-maniac8670 Read my post - a product costing at least 7 - 8 times that of the G2 damn well better be better, lol.
Next you'll be telling us that a Cheetah is faster than a Turtle.
@@ChrisM541 yep, like comparing a Ferrari to a Ford. They're both cars.
Actually... I'd be really happy if Pimax (or someone) would come out with a spherical lens to replace the Fresnel lens in the existing Pimax 8KX. I bet a lot of other Pimax owners would go for that too!
Need this for us consumers Varjo!
What compare the Varjo one no regular person has access to?
Does the VARJO VR-3 have a lifetime subscription option?
1 year and 2 days after i received my G2 the right display started flickering. The retailer did NOT give me waranty. So I called HP, they did help me and send a new HMD witch I received the next day at home. I was so surprised by HP helpdesk.
On topic, I dont think the price diff between the G2 an VR-3 is worth it to me.
I wonder how much of the clearity has to do with the lenses
In what resolution of the goggles did you make this comparison, because Reverb G2 work natively in 6k 6300x3300 for 100% Supersampling, and 4k for 50% Supersampling.
The comparison should be made for the same set resolution of 3 goggles according to fpsVR.
Was it so? 🤔🤔🤔
is the US armed forces using pimax 12k already or is it 8k? seen a bunch of sims they do and all have the weird pimax headset
Kann man einfach Aspherische Linsen z.B. in die G2 einabauen?
This is a great comparison, thank you so much. The Varjo is just so wildly, obviously far ahead of the pack, here.
The Varjo looks awesome! Would buy it to replace my G2 (if the price is right)
How's the binocular overlap of the Varjo?
Take care.
Do you have trouble with the light housetracking on pimax 8kx I'm asking to see if I should order one since my 5k super had this issue
Theres already some in development, the NearLight lenses or something like that.
How does this compare to the XTAL?
I wonder if I could trim down some aspheric lenses and 3D print something to modify my G2...
Serious.. it seems if someone could make some aspheric lens kits for existing headsets they might do really well with that!
I would buy if you can do and it works out :) Have a go haha!!
So this is you showing the VR-3 without the super high resolution lense in the centre and it's still winning outright? That's just wow.
varjio we want a 1500 consumer version with no annual fee i will
You're simply the BEST. Above all the rest!
Hello! I have the hp reverb g2 and a 2080super gpu, in simulators I go to 90fps... with an 8600k. I need a recommendation: should I improve the graphics card or should I buy the VARJO AERO? Thank you!
What about comfort and tracking? Also, is there enough content yet? I haven't touched my oculus rift in years after the initial novelty wore off...
This all depends on what you do that could take advantage of it. Me I do virtual flying in DCS and I literally won't fly without VR now. It is a game changer.
wow, Varjo is on its own level. I have G2 and am very satisfied with the quality. I am still envious of the Varjo
but its g2 is quite blurry no?
I wonder if the distortion with the aspheric lenses could be reduced through a software correction.
I was so impressed with how well the G2 stood up against far more expensive headsets that I went and bought a G2 V2 its in the post as I type this.
You will like it!
MRTV if you could only have 1 PCVR headset that was available for consumers what would it be??
This screen is not active in his setup, so he is basically telling: "Even without that additional high resolution screen (which is disabled on my system), the picture already looks amazing"
And without the usage of this additional focus screen, it runs on current hardware.
With those mid tier prices & GPU’s -
You’re talking about the Valve Index
but its g2 is quite blurry no?
Looking forward to consumer products with aspheric lenses. Doesn't matter to me if it's varjo or another manufacturer to bring this to consumer market. (Even though I love multiple aspects of the VR3: good design of the headband, good resolution, aspheric lenses, FOV approaching FOV of the human eye, and very good hand tracking with the ultraleap gemini v5). I was aiming for the DecaGear 1, but if Deca can produce something similar to the Varjo VR3, I'ld be more than happy to increase my budget.
Surprised you didn't mention the G2's obvious colour fringing (aka Chromatic aberration). Pimax seemed to handle that better.
Yep, G2 does have it, but Varjo also has it. This was really more about overall sharpness.
Would love an update on the state of the DecaGear headset
Thank you for comparision, need to get the varjo consumer version.
@@cliffbird5016 I really prefer the blacks/contrast of OLED. Also, the micro-OLED is of much higher resolution/PPI than the rest of the (LCD) screeen.
I expect aspheric lenses will be the trend going forward, possibly using injection molded optical plastics to keep the cost down
will you do a video on amd fsr tech thats like nvidea dlss for vr i saw people reviewing on other channels, looks great and improves fps
The biggest problem with G2 is a sweet spot
Pimax 0:48 vs G2 1:28 vs Varjo 2:30 - just look at the upper left corner and these labels.
With G2 everything is excellent but in the very narrow window - the sweet spot is so small that everything outside it is just a mess :/
The conclusion is: just wait as some company will make a headset like Varjo but for the people. Technology is here, so this is just a matter of time.
But i can't wait...?
@@lolitis01 Now you can buy Varjo Aero - a consumer version of VR-3.
Like the upcoming meta quest 3 ?
at 3:56 the 8kx is still out of focus in this video, the Hellsplit icon is very blurry. If it was really like that, nobody would be happy with the 8kx!
Agreed.
Okay this video is much better of a comparison then that from yeterday, great work..
5:30 When I tried to get rid of the dust on the screen, it was a picture.
amazing comparison review.. well Done!
is this the same show as yesterdays?
It's a re-upload with new through the lens footage as the first release was slightly blurry.
Come on Varjo. Consumers NEED this headset.
What did they announce?
Varjo, please make a consumer version of this headset !
Yeah, I'm still set on getting the Reverb G2...
We need this!!!!
We need this Headset VR-3 is evolutionary!
I wish someone made 3rd party aspheric lenses for the g2....
Not even the G2 is affordable considering that you will need to buy a decent graphics card for it.
wow why does the Pimax have such aful quality? I thought it was supposed to be the second best, to Varjo
Great video! I would love the opportunity to purchase a varjo
I would appreciate a Consumer version.
I really want the Varjo-VR3.
Make it happen for us consumers, Varjo!
Remove subscription, remove super-resolution focus, add some controllers as Reverb G2 has - sold!
Good comparison man.
Varjo PLEASE make a consumer version of the VR-3
+1 to Varjo consumer version. It would be all that every vr enthusiast/consumer wants.
VARJO NEEDS TO TAKE OUR MONEY~!! holy cow can you see the difference @_@
Really hope PS5 VR's Fresnel lenses are a god-like new piece of engineering, as Fresnel has me a bit worried. Edit: And I don't mean god rays...
Come on varjo!!! We are waiting to buy a consumer version.
I was really hyped about getting me a VR-3 headset until I looked at the price.
We need version consumer V3 with same panel and lens BUT with less cost :(
Its worth holding out for a headset that is affordable that looks like the VR3 for consumers. The 8KX or G2 doesnt compare whatsoever. I believe Oculus will release something close fall of 2022.
Great work! Thank you!
Just consider this, monitor screen still better reception than any high end vr right now.
Anybody can tell me if I will have to wear glasses for short and medium range in these VR? I only can see far without glasses.
As a fellow glasses wearer, the answer is yes 😛 without glasses or prescription lens inserts, VR will not be as clear as it can be (just like outside VR)
I have lens inserts for my G2 that match my normal glasses prescription
