- In this video, you'll learn not only how to clean your silver in a non-abrasive way, but you'll also learn why it works. This video is great for home school groups or kids coming up with ideas for a science project. It's also great for metal detectorists and coin collectors!
I used a silver dime I found while metal detecting at San Refugio Beach in Southern California. If you'd like to see that video, look here:

All you need for this is a pan, simmering water, aluminum foil, salt, and baking soda. For the background on the science of it all, go to:

Here's a link for the toothpaste I used:

Nice. I like the idea of the baking soda/aluminum hot water bath. I'm going to try it.
Me too! I have Aus 10 & 20 cent -ie only current face value- coins that need a clean. This method looks easy and safe. Thank you!

Im a metal detector my self!! Yea o see it WORKS! Thanks
Great video, I am yet to try this technique but I have several silver coins and artefacts I would like to clean. Your coin was in pretty bad condition
nice video, thanks for sharing.very helpful
Never never never never never clean a coin!
except for a shiny effect, you just damaged the coin. Sandpaper would do less damage :D. Now it looks like a painting from Mr Bean after sulphur damaged.
Mr Bean is pretty talented...
I never thought that clean you think cleaning a penny with toothpaste works really good thank you for give me that idea
this is nice idea thanks
Thanks brother, definitely going to try this.
One quick question, I have a 1966 Canadien silver dollar, any idea how much it's worth?
I don't know for sure. If an American silver quarter is worth about US$2.40, I'm guessing a silver $1 coin should be worth no less than the silver quarter. I can honestly say I'm not sure about the size comparison, though. I just assume a Canadian dollar coin would be big like the US silver dollar
@@junkisdeleted yeah, the older Canadien silver dollars are pretty big, about the size of one and a half American quarters.
The dime I dug today is covered in green.
It looks too far gone to me at work too much right now because it’s it’s really scratched up being beaten up
Oh no you never wanna clean silver like that it devalues taking off the patina tarnish just a word of advice you can make a coin worth hundreds or even thousands make it worth scrap value
WOWOW THANKS FOR SHOWING THIS
Just use crest toothpaste and a cloth towel , it will be clean and smell minty
This is how you damage your coin! Yay!
Bestoon Jaff this is how you be rude. yay!
Time to ruin all the silver coins I have that are worth melting value (kills all value bc that’s how that works)
😈😈😈😈😈
Cleaning coins destroys the value of them so if they are old dont clean them or you will be sorry they wont grade them if they have been cleaned.
Very informative video. I definitely will keep that method in mind. How much salt did you sprinkle into the water? Cheers.
+Mark Fannin I put a couple pinches in when I clean silver. Thank you for watching!
Great video like 👍👍⭐⭐
Nice video tips bro
Thank you!
I own a lot of high value coins, they say never clean them, I am suspect that half or more have been cleaned. How would a buyer know? This is the question.
That's a great question. The only way I think I could tell, if I were a collector, would be through a magnifying glass. I would imagine a cleaned coin will have smoothed over edges vs a mint coin having more defined ridges...I think that's what I would look for. I would think that the rubbing that takes place in cleaning the coin would likely dull those ridges/edges. Thanks!
Being a collector for over 20 plus years. It’s easy to detect to be honest. You can clean it several times over, and be very delicate. However, when looking at the coin with a powerful loupe, the coin shows you spots, that the “cleaner” can’t see.
I have multiple coins that were cleaned 10-15 years earlier and you can still tell it was cleaned at one point. The coin shows spots of tarnishing and dirt, etc....that are naked to the human eye.
Or buy a pot of jewellers silver dip, much easier and non abrasive. I only used it if the coin has an ugly tone or the coin is stained.
I just put the foil in a bowl with the baking soda and pour the hot water over the coins. I rub some of the baking soda on the coin like a paste with my fingers or a microfiber cloth comes off like butter. I hope you will not be using that pan again to cook with!
Thanks for sharing! We've used it many times since, actually.
@@junkisdeleted lol
How do you get the green part that didn't come off, off?
Remember not to buy any silver from him
It would be hard to anyway...I don't sell it
TOOTHPASTE HAVE ABRASIVE!!!!! DONT PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
I use a bowl lined with foil fill hot water, toss in silver and soda
Can clean a bunch of jewelry but,,,.
Don't do hollow silver jewelry, such as bracelet Beads and some things with pin hinges, rings and solid Is ok, no Amber, celluloid, nelio enameled anything damaged by heat,
Some things will be damaged and need polish,
I use metal polish
Collectors? Ah old coins mostly just junk
Thankyou
You bet!
Hi I just want to ask you regarding a 1 oz 14 k gold coin from 1979 South Africa I have I want to know how much is worth it now if I want to sale it and also I have another coins from here there are from 1954 &1958&1946 this ones are quarters ok & I have much more coins and $2 bills with one star note in the serial # and I want to know where I can sale it and how much are worth it can you let me know the information pls
I'm the wrong person for asking for valuations on coins and bills. Good luck!
Not worth the time for a dime...It cost more for the materials, plus the time and the coin was junk anyway...
lo there is no need to do that.just take dishing saop and add bakins soda and rub over the coin.this method makes the coin devalued
I was just watching a u tube on copper pennies where they used olive oil, and your finger- thumb, wouldnt that work on silver too???
... welp for anyone thinking of cleaning a coin,.... cleaning is the quickest way to make your coin worthless...
I would like to just get a date on another coin I dug that is really beat up and has hard crud on it.
An ultrasonic cleaner may be the way to go
Listen to srllewis the best thing is not a frying pan use ordinary tooth paste an old jeweller
Friend told me this it makes silver like new especially coins
I've never heard of srllewis.
You'd use a tripod
Cool
I have the one coin romay
00201211164131 wats up
If I do this . Can my coin from vf to become ms ?
No. You'll likely lower your grade and thus lower its value
@@junkisdeleted ooh . Thank you .
@@junkisdeleted how I can make my coins to be a good coins . Can anyone tell me . ??? thank
BEWARE. IF YOU USE BAKING SODA THE BLACK OXIDATION WILL RETURN. WITH A VENGEANCE. COINS CLEANED LIKE THIS ARE REFERRED TO AS "CLEANED" AND ARE WORTH SIGNIFICANTLY LESS. LEAVE THEM IN ORIGINAL CONDITION.
Thank you for sharing.
Cleaning rag dolls a lot better and faster
Not one of the best cleaning methods I've seen. This is somewhat of an obsolete way to make silver look better. Ask any jeweler who you are on a first name basis with. He has a little machine thingy that I dropped in a 1996 Silver American Eagle and it came out PRISTINE..!
Thanks for the tip. Is it anything like the jewelry cleaners I've used on my channel?
@@junkisdeleted To be honest with you this was your first video I've seen. I meant no harm nor disrespect toward you or the method you used. I just use what is for me a quicker and more through way to shine it up. Sorry if you took my comment wrong.
machine thingy doesnt help
Cleaned or not this coin has no collectors value. The condition of it is crap anyway.
+raketata4 yes, but it's now my crap... ;)
Boom! This guy's related to the Crazy Russian Hacker
That's funny. He got me saying it. Lol
If you want to use abrasive, why not baking soda? Skip the whole toothpaste step, just rub the coin with damp baking soda and rinse, repeat until shiny. Toss it back into the hot aluminum bath if necessary.
I haven't tried that.
Don't clean your coins they won't been worth anything. No coins.
I guess you forget that clean silver and dirty silver are still worth their weight in silver... at worst case, they're worth the face value of the coin, so as long as USD still has value, my shiny silver coin will still be worth something... 😆
And for all the drug addicts out there
This is also how to cook crack
Interesting...
Who will buy my old coins penny’s ang dimes and five cents and philippine pesos
That's a great question. I don't know. Check with your local bank if you're looking for converting the coins to a different currency, otherwise look up coin collectors in the area.
IF THEY ARE 90 PERCENT SILVER ANCIENT COINS THERE IS NO NEED TO DO THAT.JUST APPLY LITTLE WASHING SOAP AND THEN GIVE A GENTLE RUB AND THEN RUB A PINCH OF BAKING SODA.
Thank you
You made it even worse
I just dip mine in some jewel luster
That's prob better for the silver you're cleaning...
Sir,WhatsApp naber ?
I would rather have the dirty y do u people keep doing this
most experts and collectors will tell you - never ever try to clean your coins .. actually de values the coin - spraying it with water is about it ..
Wheat penny older onewhat price
I have a lot dirty coins they look good and have a lot of miss Ed d fir punches
Seems like a lot of work for 1 fuckin dime
You're right....but it's probably best to learn on a dime before using the same process on something more expensive
Ten cents before ten cents after
No
It's weight 90% silver so like a buck
