BTS saw the writing on the wall and knew that they wouldn't get exempted and were tired of being pawns for the government, so they took matters into their own hands. It does seems that BTS is respected and appreciated around the world and yet get no acknowledgement for all that they have done from Korea from their own government. They made history by being nominated again for the Grammy's, but I am sure that they won't get any acknowledgement for that either. The thing is that BTS are so much more than a K-POP band, they are ambassadors, they have spoken at the U.N., they have been to the White House to speak to the President about Asian hate crimes, they promote tourism for Korea, how much more can they give?
They didn't really take matters into there own hands at all.... Military service is compulsory not a choice in Sth Korea, they can't not go, even if they don't want to. They can't even say they don't want to go without getting Government backlash. 🤦♀️ And as if any artist would want to join the military when there career was on the rise on the international stage.

The government kept stringing them along by pretending that they were going to consider exemption for the group, instead they just kept using them and their fan base to further their political agendas without caring at all how this was affecting the members.

Shaylee, I agree with you! they are the best that core has. Not one person of those who exempted was ambassador of his country in all those events: UN, White house, expo, etc etc!!! And they don't even value a bit of it letting them do the service like any other. 😡😔💔
jin's fame and accomplishments can be a double-edged sword. the military has a different culture and mindset, and jin can either be the target for bullying, hardship, and humiliation, or be treated differently because of his unique status, not just as an artist, but like being awarded honors by the government because bts members officially represented korea on different occasions on the world stage. hopefully jin will finish his military service physically and mentally unharmed, and with his heart unchanged, so he can continue to share beautiful music with the world.
That is my biggest fear too...this could go very badly, and I just pray that Jin (and the others) can get through this without suffering physical, mental or heart changing effects, for I know it happens to many and they come out so changed-and not for the better. 😢 They have done so much for SK, it would be heartbreaking if SK ends up being the thing that destroys them. 💔
@@kimmyers3389 also, the bangtan boys never had a "normal" life. they dedicated their youth for their craft, and the first environment they will be immersed in outside of the world of the performing arts is one that is not "normal" either -- the world of the military is so much different, it could give them culture shock. hopefully their idol training of focus , hard work, and perseverance will help them through.

As an American Woman, I didn't feel like my opinion mattered, however, that whole saga over the 2030 World Expo, those creepy politicians, etc, really was upsetting. Infuriating. I'm not OG ARMY, but it seems to me like they have been serving their country through their whole career, done things no one else can do for their country, culture, industry, humanity, even. Things that can't even be measured. It's not about us being selfish wanting to keep our Boys from going into the military, it's about the fact that they have earned it more than some others who have received exemption. They better allow Jin to perform his duties in Peace, if you know what I mean😑 ARMY will be watching.

They they really aren’t an exemption and there’s a lot of us didn’t think that enlistment might’ve been possible but maybe as a concession they didn’t have to do the for 18 months maybe do 12 months that’s actually a concession that should’ve been agreeable to all parties where where won they actually did serve their government and honor their government rules and also got a concession that their efforts to actually work towards exemption were also being heard and honored so that they felt like they were being heard and also get a get a workable compromise that actually would’ve been a good compromise where they didn’t have to do the 18 to 20 months how about 12 months or 10 months if they really being generous which is less than a year that would’ve been absolutely a very good compromise that’s all we were asking that the government compromise So they don’t feel like they have to serve doing height of their career no one wants to take two years off but how about a few a good year good 12 months or less it’s actually doable. Yeah it didn’t look good for their their government to do a whole bunch of pressed for events in the future and you not do any concessions for them maybe could’ve did Tom served or something they’ve certainly worked hard enough to do it all those extra commercials and free concert they didn’t have to do a free concert they could’ve actually get out a concert regular concert and have people pay money and army would’ve gladly have paid money to see them in concert together and yell and the government would not have gotten a dime because even a free concert became such a controversy because the government didn’t do their part because they probably thought that once they announced it a whole bunch of people what businesses would’ve came on board the bandwagon and put their two cents in to relieve and I probably better get him a thought that a whole bunch of companies would’ve came on board to relieve their their bill basically.
I agree with all Korean men to undergo military service so they would know what to do if in case a war really breaks out, just like Israel, even their women undergo military training, but I hope Jin would be allowed to do his military training in peace and not take him out to do events while training just because the government wants it, that wouldn't be fair to him and his military colleagues, it's either he stays in training or not at all

I'm an American citizen but I think we in the United States can have an opinion on BTS military service due to the fact that we send a lot of our own military men and women over to South Korea to protect SK from NK. BTS in my opinion is as important as their sports stars are to them. I am very proud that the guys took it upon themselves to go to the military and didn't let anyone, including their government, decide for them.
I can’t say anything about military duties in SK because I’m from other country, but SK is a very dear and important country for me thanks to BTS. I paid attention to their culture , people ,art, food, films and music thanks to them, and not just me, lots of people too!, they are their best ambassadors, doesn’t they deserve any privilege for opening SK to the rest of the world?? At least I hope they are healthy and safe in their military service. We’ll support them forever!!
Yes. that's what a lot of people are asking. It's a real shame. On the one hand, BTS and all those connected to them, worked really hard for themselves. They wanted to succeed as musicians, singers, as a Kpop group, without any ulterior motives. Ten years ago no one could've ever possibly predicted these outcomes and record shattering events one after the other (even Jungkook winning the People's Choice Awards is insane). They did this for themselves, their team, their families. On the other hand... compare them to ANY Nobel Prize winner, ANY star, ANY inventor. Did Albert Einstein set out to be the most famous mathematician in the world of the 20th century? NO. What about Stephen Hawkins? Louis Pasteur? Or any number of modern age heros. No one believes when they begin their research or endeavor they will become World Famous. Yet, when they present never-before discoveries or achievements, they are acknowledged, recognized, rewarded and recorded for all of posterity. So - why not BTS? Every person in the arts/entertainment/music industry says what BTS has accomplished is immeasurable. So, wht the F is wrong with their govt? Jealousy, Fear, Envy, Power. That's whats wrong. These low-lifes can't acknowledge their accomplishments for fear they will not look as important. It's about keeping power and position by showing they are still the ones who make the decisions. Now, if a few of them had been bribed, I guarantee the boys wouldn't be going to the military. But, BigHit / HYBE couldn't risk that. I'm sure it was openly discussed within the confines of their offices. But could never be realized. And it wouldn't have stayed secret either. In the end they were screwed over. this is just my opinion.

Big Hit said they were going to "strive to provide every support he needs during this time", but then Jin has said he's going to the front lines, as I'm sure all of the members will be as they are all in pretty good shape. The military has no reason to treat idols any differently and has actually proven time and time again that they will not. Not even to step in to protect them from abuse and harassment. There's a lot to worry about and it is going to be a long two years.

As a BTS fan from Australia and part of the Aussie ARMY and Kiwi ARMY, we can't say anything about the of military duties in another country. I have been a BTS fan on and off since 2018 but became ARMY 2021. I went to South Korea in October for YTC Busan, and the atmosphere felt different, it had a feeling of a 'see you later' type event rather than a concert granted the concert was phenomenal including the 2 Live Play sites and the week before had different event around the city including events for Jimin's 27th Birthday, but to me and most of the Armies that I met all said something felt a bit off during this time and we found out 2 days after the concert. I am now an ARMY for life since early last year, I don't think that they would disband or anything but like what they said in FESTA in June when this was still up in the air, that they will come back sometime. The members also said in YTC Busan that they want to keep performing as BTS in their 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's and maybe 70's. Also, the members said to keep on trusting them during this time. This is just a bump in the road and ARMY will still be right behind them in the beginning of 2025. I also think that these individual projects that each member are doing during this time including individual albums and other projects will make ARMY hearts grow and they will also have new ARMY each year, also it will shine a light on each member separately to see their different personalities and musical influences etc. This will only grow them and when 2025 rolls around they will have the world's biggest fandom ARMY right behind them, when they comeback. I hope that they stay healthy and safe during this time and ARMY will always be with them. BTS and ARMY FOREVER
He is gonna be ok. He has millions praying for him. True Army will always have his back and love him thru out his service. We love BTS period. We will have their backs forever, whether solo or a group. Trust me there are millions of grandmothers from America who love this group. We feel like they are our grandsons. They represented Korea at the UN three times - even having diplomatic passports the last time. And remain active with Unicef. They were invited to the White House. The number of national and international awards and records are too numerous to mention. They have elevated the stature of Korea and its culture, history and people globally. How is this not service to their country? Why wouldn't the government make them official diplomats for the 18-20 months of service? It would be a far better way to utilize these seven young men than having them in the military. What a waste.

So props to BTS for taking the matter and their military conscription into their own hands. Telling the SK government we are going and we are not waiting for the government to jerk us around anymore. I have no doubt that jin and the whole BTS will be able to fulfill their duties with flying colors. They have always been fierce and haven’t back down whatever challenges comes their way. Armies are like them too.. BTS ARMY are not only good at supporting them through cheers but also raising our hands in prayer for their health and safety. Knowing that prayer is the only thing we can do to support them at this tough times.

I love when Defense Departments say, "We'll take public opinion into consideration" because that translates to, "We'll glance over it, but ultimately we're the ones making the final decision here so your opinion is null and void." I think BTS's military service is going to be a trial run for the relationship between K-pop and the military / Korean government. If this service is "successful", (keeping in mind that the definition of success might be determined via the Department of Defense), then the chances of furthering that bill for K-Pop exemptions probably won't happen. I think I've said this before but I'll say it again: It's all about power. The current politicians that are very set in their ways know they have limited time left, so they are doing everything possible to demonstrate their prowess before leaving office. Forcing BTS to complete military service is a BIG win for them.

I’m an American OG army mom. Why in the world after all that BTS has done for its country they want more from them. I have followed these guys from the beginning thanks to my daughter. I have enjoyed learning about food, art, culture and language (which I still can’t learn 🤦♀️). They have opened the doors for ppl to learn about other K-POP groups and the amount of income they have generated for their country is unbelievable. I just wish they didn’t have to do this. Believe me I’m not leaving them I will be here when they come back and for all the projects they have planned now. I just wish the best for them and I hope when it’s all done they won’t be used anymore by the politicians.
I must say that when I read that Jin will do his "traineeship" in that barracks, I was a little heartened, given that in 2018 it was visited by surprise by the former President and therefore modernized. 🙏🤞I hope I was understandable, as I use the translator. Yes, please submit a written petition to the government. Where can I sign? Thank you for bringing to light these issues regarding the members and their military obligations. I'm from the US and went to SK in October to see the Live Play. Their performance was phenomenal, and the amount of work they put into that show (knowing and having to conceal the fact that it would be the last before the members started enlisting) was second to none. There is no doubt that these guys are precious and need to be protected.
The petition is a great idea. I think it might actually help future groups. It's too late for BTS because no matter what decision is made in late December, Jin won't leave. If Jin does his service, the rest of BTS will do it and not let him do it alone. I think Jin is so popular and friendly, that the others near him in the military will rally around him to make him comfortable. Hopefully, at the end, it will all just seem like a blink of an eye and not change him. Even if half of Army abandons BTS (they won't) they will still come out in 2025 with the largest fanbase in the world. Let's just hope that N. Korea doesn't chose now to start any nonsense.
Truthfully, I think if we are talking about fairness then there shouldn’t be a petition for future groups. If BTS who comes the closest with their accolades, can’t get exempt then I don’t think another group gets to benefit from exemption.
I said a petition wouldn’t do anything for BTS however, KPop shouldn’t be under different rules than classical artists so a petition might help in that respect. The ones that start the conversation on any topic of change are always cited as the example. No one is extorting BTS but rather recognizing them as the conduit for change.
tbh, since BTS didn't get exempted given all that they have accomplished then I don't think ANY Kpop group should and especially not on BTS shoulders. If in future another group ever has the reach BTS has then that group at that time can seek exemption for themselves. In fact the exemption system needs to be abolished completely since there was so much talk of fairness. Either all able bodied men are required to serve or they aren't, there should be no loopholes only for a subjective few. Also given the population issue which was brought up as a reason not to exempt there should be discussion why only men are required to serve. What will happen when they run out of a large enough number of men to be trained? If the unthinkable ever happens both men and women will need to be ready to defend themselves and their country.

I think you're overlooking one thing in the interview you gave: Most BTS fans are in fact not fans of Kpop in general nor are they primarily young people who are more prone to "move on to other groups". So I have to disagree with your statement on that. I honestly think the diversity of the fandom will work in their favour in terms of loyalty. It's solely the (mis)treatment that they're possibly facing and the impact it'll have on them as individuals that worries me. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, but if South Korea thinks they're not under constant scrutiny from ARMY for the next two years, they're sorely mistaken and trust me - ARMY can out-perform any intelligence agency out there! We *will* find out about any wrong-doings!
I totally agree with you! I have zero interest in any of the other k-pop groups. BTS is all I need. I’ve grown to love them for the lovely human beings that they are, not for being idols or #1. This is not a “silly temporary phase” for me. This is forever. I will always follow them. I have my life and they’re part of it. They have their lives and we’re part of it. Simple. Even from a distance people who love each other make every effort to keep in touch. No other group is like BTS. They deserve an exemption bc they’ve gone above and beyond for their country, but I understand the need for all Korean men to be trained in case of war. Women too. 6 months should suffice for BTS to learn to shoot a weapon, then allow them to be free. Free to do live for themselves, it’s about damn time! They’ve earned it! I agree, I don’t most BTS fans are kpop fans or will move on to other groups. I’m 58 and American and a music not for all of those years starting with The Beatles who came to America for the first time the week I was born. BTS ARE SPECIAL. ARMY IS SPECIAL. there’s just no replacement for them and ARMY will wait for them and enjoy their individual projects and all their music till they come back. I too worry about their emotional well being and how it will affect them, their art and of course physical well being. I will pray for them everyday like my own sons.

Sending BTS to the military is the most disgusting thing I've ever heard of, the government should be ashamed of themselves for letting this happen. All the good things these young people have done in representing their country abroad, proudly defending it, spreading the good word, encouraging people to come, bringing in billions of dollars in exports, concerts and tourism, and how do they repay it? They force them to give up their careers at the height of their success, and then send them to the front lines as punishment. I think it's not just about the government, it's about their company doing everything to get BTS out of the way. Standby is on and we will always love and support our beloved BTS!

BTS is not like every other group. They have become international ambassadors. I hope that SK military and government at least consider this and maybe they can figure out a way for their status to help promote peace and better international relations rather than war -- it sounds like wishful thinking but BTS is not just "some group" but rather leaders of an ideology of loving both self and others -- if the world operated with just these 2 ideas where would we be. We all need to channel our love to the members but also to ARMY and our friends and families -- this is the difference these men want us to make. We need to be ARMY -- warriors to change the status quo and bring love back to his horribly divided world. It sounds so simple but maybe we need to do just that, go back to simple.
Really impressive that you, Sean, were able to interview with ABC on exemptions. I still support these exemptions but also feel like it's important to honor any member's preference to complete service and duty to country. I'm very concerned about how the military can manage equal treatment of enlistees. As far as aging out of interest in BTS I don't really think that's going to happen. I believe most Army will be trying to find news about them while they're in service. Remember you guys, here in the states I feel we're left out of the loop sometimes. Thank you for everything you have done. There are other petitions like this. I know one is in the UK. If they all got together and mailed in their petitions it would make a huge statement and the numbers would be harder to ignore.
I am disappointed that the South Korean government couldn’t or wouldn’t find a way to add exemptions for pop culture. Especially after everything BTS has done for the country. At the same time I’m proud of them for choosing to go because no one can say to them oh you got of military service cause your BTS. No one can look down on them. I just pray they don’t have to go through what G-Dragon did. I hope the other soldiers respect their space and treat them kindly. I hope they’re not bullied by anyone like their superiors. I hope they can make friends and memories of their time in and come out safely. Cause if anyone is mean to them or hurt them in anyway I want heads to roll!!!

The question is will the BTS boys or any other idol's state of mind be the same when they return because we don't know what they would have to go through their training.. I too am an American Woman. I'm going to put this bluntly. BTS put SK on the map globally. The number of people that came to SK because of BTS massively increased their economy by leaps and bounds. The entire world that so deparately couldn't wait till they came to their country to perform. All the American Awards shows, talk shows, news shows that all were waiting for them to visit and give an interview. BTS's Global success and the love of people from everyone around the world says it all. SK didn't use to be a big tourism country. Now it is because of??? Yea BTS!!!!! I personally feel that demanding they enlist in the military is a very stupid move. Economically and in every other negative way possible. This makes me very sad and angry! 😡😔

Personally I am extremely angry with the Sth Korean Government for not giving their greatest export BTS an exemption, it is well known that idols face abuse in the Sth Korean military not only from other enlistees but by officials, many after Military service have ongoing mental health issues because of it, and many idols do not return afterwards.

The issues I see for Jin are multiple... too long to detail here bc I'd wind up writing a thesis. My only comfort is that I think Jin is good at listening and taking advice from elders. I have to believe that he is surrounded by good people who can guide him and give sound advice. His biggest challenge will be his headstrong personality and learning to keep his mouth shut and his emotions /true thoughts hidden. And to be just another regular grunt on the line. I think by the end of 5 wks of basic training it's gonna be a rude awakening. The other thing Jin has going for him is he has a strong sense of functioning as part of a team. In the military the unit functions as a whole. Not individuals. Jin has been doing that for a long while. His lack of restraint. He just says, does what he wants. He doesn't shy away from confrontation & is heavily invested in the Korean honorific system. So, is he gonna insist that all his juniors speak formally with him? I donno. I know that BTS internal dynamics are still very much based on hoobae-sunbae social definitions. This is NOT a bad thing. They love and care for eo immensely. Look out for eo. But, Jin is sensitive about that, being the "eldest." And, he also takes his role as the eldest very srsly. So it's not a take & no give scenario. Pls don't misunderstand what I'm saying here. Jin is also very physically fit. Otherwise, his age could be a real handicap vs an 18 or 19 yo. There will always be ppl who like us, ppl who are jealous or envious & spiteful. Up to now, the members have been protected and have known mostly love and adoration. Reality can be harsh. But - in order to get as far as they have I'm sure they have faced many tough days and tougher challenges. They may all be stronger than we think. I think ppl are most worried for Jin bc of how he is, somewhat awkward, admittedly clumsy (he makes fun of himself abt learning the dance moves), yet headstrong & confrontational. I'm just srsly pissed off and angry about the whole situation. It's complete effin b.s. It's like them telling Samsung to shut down for 2 yrs. Except BTS brings in higher revenue per year. I have heard some terrible stories about the terrible treatment of celebrities doing their military service. I just hope Jin or any of the other members do not experience any of these terrible things and come back to us safely.
I saw the interview when it aired, and I thought you were very articulate in discussing the situation. I thought this news report provided information that was helpful to individuals who don't understand Korean military requirements, as well as the different viewpoints, issues, and concerns.
I'm a 67 year old fan of K-POP. My first group was Got7 then I learned about other groups. BTS is at the top of my list! One of the things I'm concerned about the guys doing their service is how other non show business military members treat them. I've heard some guys are so jealous because their girlfriends/wives are huge fans and worry the men may cause problems for them. How will the military handle this if it occurs?

I understand the situation SK is living and why there is the forced enlistment, but at the same time I think BTS would(and did) more for their country while continung their activities. If not an exemption, they could have made them do only the 5 weeks of training. They deserved more respect, in my humble opinion.
So why were they could just do that you know the Boot Camp and maybe a few months I mean come on now compromise it’s not like this is there lifetime career you know where they’re going into the military is going to be like a lifetime thing you know and a peaceful say that the Boot Camp is not enough how about doing six months. Or a how about 12 months and that’s actually a good compromise and still having to do a before 18 to 20 since military is not always not the career choice and they’re Not exactly going to live the military life you know
I can't see why there isn't a compromise in this situation. I mean Son the soccer player, though under contract with Tottenham managed to do a very shortened term of military training, about a month I think. So why can't BTS do a shortened length as well. I believe they would be conflicted if they don't serve, so a compromise I believe would suit all concerned. I don't see why it should be 100% one way or the other.
It seams that the most worrying problem is when BTS actually enters the military to do their duty. Their safety in the military needs to be watched more that anything else. We know BTS has earned enough kudos for South Korea by earning an amazing amount money for the country. So please lets keep our hope up that the military will treat BTS with respect and not do anything that would adversely effect BTS. I am sure BTS will go into the military respecting all those in the institution.

Forwarding ARMY’s comments re BTS military enlistment to the government is a smart idea. IMHO, paper would trump the internet, and of course it must be done ASAP as it’s already Dec 11. I am a senior fan of BTS, and a subscriber to your great channel, which is richly deserving of many subscribers.
The controversy was caused because there are exemptions. The question became “why not recognize BTS’ contribution with an exemption.” If there are no exemptions serving would not have been an issue. I listen to BTS because they are more than a boy band. They are the most creative group I’ve listened to - there are layers to their work. Their journey inspires me. That said, I am not seeking to listen to another group. I will wait for all of the members to finish their solo projects, serve their mandatory military service, and come back. They will grow during their time away from the cameras. Ride or die - OT7 all the way!
I agree on sending the petition - it's a good reminder that yes, we are watching. These are my thoughts: It sounds like service isn't such a bad thing, - it's a break and a new part of the journey of growth. However, the treatment and possible infliction of abuse/trauma of high profile artists needs rethinking. It's not special treatment, it's taking care of the investment. I also think they need to be more lenient in allowing groups to perform and keep the ball rolling on the career - just not at the same level. That way fans keep in touch. At first I was worried about Jin, and the others. They are highly creative sensitive souls. They are tough too, and will be fine as they are used to working in a team environment. I already am and have been resigned to the fact that BTS is going into the military. I think all along they knew they were going. Even Jin said he was planning on going shortly after their Festa ‘22 dinner in June, but then the Busan concert came up, etc., & BTS wanted to do a proper goodby to the ARMYs, though we didn’t know about the announcement of military enlistment at the time. I always felt like the haters out there would just criticize BTS for not serving. I have no doubt that ARMYs will wait & welcome them back with open arms! Maybe a few fans will out-age them, but the diversity of true ARMYs (ages, backgrounds, globalness) will keep them going! As a seniorARMY, I know I will never outgrow BTS! I’m sure Hybe and BigHit have it all planned out, constantly keeping ARMYs engaged & informed, with never ending content to entertain us. I have not felt any void since BTS talked about taking a ‘break.’ Plus, there is a never ending amount of YT content (old & new) to keep us occupied. We’ve endured Covid and the time flew by (it’s almost 3 years later). I’m sure this time, till 2025, will fly by too. I just hope some maniacal fans don’t show up on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see what the media puts out there that day. I guess I will be waiting & watching from afar! 👍🏼💜🫶🏼

I definitely think you should send that written petition to the government. All politicians love paper. Even if it doesn't work, and the answer is still no, at least we were given a voice and said our peace to the officials. As for Jin and the rest of the guys, I think they'll be okay in the military. I do worry for their safety, but I think people will be so busy trying to make friends with them (because who doesn't want to become best friends with a global superstar) and take pictures with them, etc., they're not even going to think about abusing them or taking naked pictures of them. And if some type of incident does happen with any of the members that will blow up on an global scale, and I don't think the SK government or military wants that. I'm pretty sure they realize that BTS has become the face of SK and know that a bad incident would be a disaster for them.
I think it would be a good idea to print the petition off and send it in to the government officials. It would give them something to hold and look at. Most people don't see them as K-pop Idols they see them as cultural ambassadors, that helped a lot of people learn about South Korea with all its beauty and culture. They do deserve to be giving and exemption for all the hard work they have done for their country all this time.
What do NCT, SJ or EXO have to do with BTS? Military exemption question was only raised due to BTS impact, it's laughable to mention others in the same category. I'm upset ABC doesn't understand the difference between BTS and other kpop groups. Meanwhile, Korean officials are attributing the success of BTS to themselves and using them as they want for promoting soft power of Korea. Ironically, it was because of BTS that I have learned about all the corruption, flaws of educational system and frustrations of my generation in Korea. BTS themselves are grown-up men who can make their own decisions concerning their private lives. They surely feel the pressure of being role models because of their well-deserved status. They would have never accepted exemption if for no other reason than the image of their team. So I wish them to safely complete their military service and maybe find new inspirations Although it's a bummer that men must go to the army. 3.5 billion a year does not mean shit to S. Korean gov it seems. I don't understand the need for Media to include NCT, EXO, Enhypen to even be qualified for an exemption like BTS do. Cos the difference is pretty clear. BTS truly truly deserve their exemption in every way!!! It's not just a Kpop thing tbh. Also Imagine If in few years Media gotta publish articles like- "Mandatory Military Service put an end to the career of the Most valuable Pop act to ever walk on this planet" Cos it's crazy!!! This whole situation makes me so angry. BTS has been horribly taken advantage of by the government. I’m 67 year old Canadian who was thinking of travelling to South Korea only because of BTS but right now I’d rather spend my tourist dollars in Japan. My next tv? Not going to be Samsung. My next car? Not going to be Hyundai or Kia. And yet, when I tried to rally friends with me, they all said it’s Jin’s decision. AND WHAT HAPPENS if one of the members gets severely injured or KILLED??? There will be world wide mass hysteria. Going to the Military is NOT a personal choice it is mandatory in Sth Korea even if they don't want to go they can't even say they don't want to go due to Government backlash BUT logically NO artist would want to halt their career at this time given they have really just broken into the greater Western Market. I agree with you! It's horrible what happens in the army. a very famous idol (I think from exo) said that he had wanted to commit suicide. and I also saw other men who said the same thing! I still can't believe that people think "they want to go" just because a letter from hibe says that! That letter seemed pathetic to me because it is known that NO man wants to go to because they are forced to stop their lives and do all kinds of things that they do not want and live in an environment of forced violence! The Korean government is willing to spend millions to assure Jin’s security and safety while serving. The government needs to understand and remember that there’s 6 more members who will need this millions worth of security. This is a big lo the government considering the loss of billions from BTS activities and the millions worth of security expenses for each member while serving in the military. It is not a problem that they will serve in the military, but that they deserve fair treatment and respect for their achievements and contributions from the authorities in their country. But that doesn't happen. Korean politicians could decide on an exception or at least some shortened term of service. But they don't. I found this quote under "The untouchable chaebols of South Korea". "But there is zero chance of finding the children of said politicians/CEOs in the military (many kids from powerful families find a way to skip military service)." What kind of fairness is the South Korean military and politicians talking about /provided they exempted 60,000 people/.

Please print the petition and send it. I would sign a petition. If there is an online petition please send it also. It needs to be seen and heard/read. If we can do anything please let us know and yes a crazy fan directory is a must. If any BTS members are hurt or bullied we need to speak for them. And let the Korean government know we won’t stand for it. The members military service should be cut shorter at the very least. If not they do the 5 weeks and that’s it. They are done. If the government doesn’t do something then when BTS comes back they don’t do anything to help support their country. Plain and simple they have all done enough. Army will be watching and watching. The worst of all this is that we will not know if they suffer something like bullying, injuries or whatever! We will never know your experience there unless they have to transfer you or something like that!! military service is hermetic!!! and the worst thing is that people think it's okay just to see a photo!! an idol named taemin did an interview (manipulated) while in the army (all for him to promote 😡) He seemed fine, you never suspected that something was wrong with him. and a few weeks later it was learned that they had to transfer him to public service because the other results of that unit were having bullying, and he suffered from panic attacks and severe depression!! So imagine!! some idols recounted their traumatic experience long after leaving there! I don't want to find out in 5 years that they had a horrible time!! nor that any photo of them that has been taken without consent comes out! They are going to have a very bad time and they did not deserve that!!! no one else did for their country what they did

BTS saw the writing on the wall and knew that they wouldn't get exempted and were tired of being pawns for the government, so they took matters into their own hands. It does seems that BTS is respected and appreciated around the world and yet get no acknowledgement for all that they have done from Korea from their own government. They made history by being nominated again for the Grammy's, but I am sure that they won't get any acknowledgement for that either. The thing is that BTS are so much more than a K-POP band, they are ambassadors, they have spoken at the U.N., they have been to the White House to speak to the President about Asian hate crimes, they promote tourism for Korea, how much more can they give?
They didn't really take matters into there own hands at all.... Military service is compulsory not a choice in Sth Korea, they can't not go, even if they don't want to. They can't even say they don't want to go without getting Government backlash. 🤦♀️

The government kept stringing them along by pretending that they were going to consider exemption for the group, instead they just kept using them and their fan base to further their political agendas without caring at all how this was affecting the members.

jin's fame and accomplishments can be a double-edged sword. the military has a different culture and mindset, and jin can either be the target for bullying, hardship, and humiliation, or be treated differently because of his unique status, not just as an artist, but like being awarded honors by the government because bts members officially represented korea on different occasions on the world stage. hopefully jin will finish his military service physically and mentally unharmed, and with his heart unchanged, so he can continue to share beautiful music with the world.
That is my biggest fear too...this could go very badly, and I just pray that Jin (and the others) can get through this without suffering physical, mental or heart changing effects, for I know it happens to many and they come out so changed-and not for the better. 😢 They have done so much for SK, it would be heartbreaking if SK ends up being the thing that destroys them. 💔

I'm not OG ARMY, but it seems to me like they have been serving their country through their whole career, done things no one else can do for their country, culture, industry, humanity, even. Things that can't even be measured. It's not about us being selfish wanting to keep our Boys from going into the military, it's about the fact that they have earned it more than some others who have received exemption. They they really aren’t an exemption and there’s a lot of us didn’t think that enlistment might’ve been possible but maybe as a concession they didn’t have to do the for 18 months maybe do 12 months that’s actually a concession that should’ve been agreeable to all parties where where won they actually did serve their government and honor their government rules and also got a concession that their efforts to actually work towards exemption were also being heard and honored so that they felt like they were being heard and also get a get a workable compromise that actually would’ve been a good compromise where they didn’t have to do the 18 to 20 months how about 12 months or 10 months if they really being generous which is less than a year that would’ve been absolutely a very good compromise that’s all we were asking that the government compromise So they don’t feel like they have to serve doing height of their career no one wants to take two years off but how about a few a good year good 12 months or less it’s actually doable. Yeah it didn’t look good for their their government to do a whole bunch of pressed for events in the future and you not do any concessions for them maybe could’ve did Tom served or something they’ve certainly worked hard enough to do it all those extra commercials and free concert they didn’t have to do a free concert they could’ve actually get out a concert regular concert and have people pay money and army would’ve gladly have paid money to see them in concert together and yell and the government would not have gotten a dime because even a free concert became such a controversy because the government didn’t do their part because they probably thought that once they announced it a whole bunch of people what businesses would’ve came on board the bandwagon and put their two cents in to relieve and I probably better get him a thought that a whole bunch of companies would’ve came on board to relieve their their bill basically.
I agree with all Korean men to undergo military service so they would know what to do if in case a war really breaks out, just like Israel, even their women undergo military training, but I hope Jin would be allowed to do his military training in peace and not take him out to do events while training just because the government wants it, that wouldn't be fair to him and his military colleagues, it's either he stays in training or not at all

I'm an American citizen but I think we in the United States can have an opinion on BTS military service due to the fact that we send a lot of our own military men and women over to South Korea to protect SK from NK. BTS in my opinion is as important as their sports stars are to them. I am very proud that the guys took it upon themselves to go to the military and didn't let anyone, including their government, decide for them.
Please keep fighting for them. They deserve this exemption as they have been working for 10 years already and have earned that right. #ForeverBangtan

Yes. that's what a lot of people are asking. It's a real shame. On the one hand, BTS and all those connected to them, worked really hard for themselves. They wanted to succeed as musicians, singers, as a Kpop group, without any ulterior motives. Ten years ago no one could've ever possibly predicted these outcomes and record shattering events one after the other (even Jungkook winning the People's Choice Awards is insane). They did this for themselves, their team, their families.
On the other hand... compare them to ANY Nobel Prize winner, ANY star, ANY inventor. Did Albert Einstein set out to be the most famous mathematician in the world of the 20th century? NO. What about Stephen Hawkins? Louis Pasteur? Or any number of modern age heros. No one believes when they begin their research or endeavor they will become World Famous. Yet, when they present never-before discoveries or achievements, they are acknowledged, recognized, rewarded and recorded for all of posterity. So - why not BTS? Every person in the arts/entertainment/music industry says what BTS has accomplished is immeasurable. So, wht the F is wrong with their govt? Jealousy, Fear, Envy, Power. That's whats wrong. These low-lifes can't acknowledge their accomplishments for fear they will not look as important. It's about keeping power and position by showing they are still the ones who make the decisions.
Now, if a few of them had been bribed, I guarantee the boys wouldn't be going to the military. But, BigHit / HYBE couldn't risk that. I'm sure it was openly discussed within the confines of their offices. But could never be realized. And it wouldn't have stayed secret either. Big Hit said they were going to "strive to provide every support he needs during this time", but then Jin has said he's going to the front lines, as I'm sure all of the members will be as they are all in pretty good shape. The military has no reason to treat idols any differently and has actually proven time and time again that they will not. Not even to step in to protect them from abuse and harassment. There's a lot to worry about and it is going to be a long two years.
Some of the stories about how some idols have been treated is nauseating and I fear for the guys especially with them separated

As a BTS fan from Australia and part of the Aussie ARMY and Kiwi ARMY, we can't say anything about the of military duties in another country. I have been a BTS fan on and off since 2018 but became ARMY 2021. I went to South Korea in October for YTC Busan, and the atmosphere felt different, it had a feeling of a 'see you later' type event rather than a concert granted the concert was phenomenal including the 2 Live Play sites and the week before had different event around the city including events for Jimin's 27th Birthday, but to me and most of the Armies that I met all said something felt a bit off during this time and we found out 2 days after the concert. I am now an ARMY for life since early last year, I don't think that they would disband or anything but like what they said in FESTA in June when this was still up in the air, that they will come back sometime. The members also said in YTC Busan that they want to keep performing as BTS in their 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's and maybe 70's. Also, the members said to keep on trusting them during this time. This is just a bump in the road and ARMY will still be right behind them in the beginning of 2025. I also think that these individual projects that each member are doing during this time including individual albums and other projects will make ARMY hearts grow and they will also have new ARMY each year, also it will shine a light on each member separately to see their different personalities and musical influences etc. This will only grow them and when 2025 rolls around they will have the world's biggest fandom ARMY right behind them, when they comeback. I hope that they stay healthy and safe during this time and ARMY will always be with them. BTS and ARMY FOREVER

They represented Korea at the UN three times - even having diplomatic passports the last time. And remain active with Unicef. They were invited to the White House. The number of national and international awards and records are too numerous to mention. They have elevated the stature of Korea and its culture, history and people globally. How is this not service to their country? Why wouldn't the government make them official diplomats for the 18-20 months of service? It would be a far better way to utilize these seven young men than having them in the military. What a waste.

I have no doubt that jin and the whole BTS will be able to fulfill their duties with flying colors. They have always been fierce and haven’t back down whatever challenges comes their way. Armies are like them too.. BTS ARMY are not only good at supporting them through cheers but also raising our hands in prayer for their health and safety. Knowing that prayer is the only thing we can do to support them at this tough times.

I love when Defense Departments say, "We'll take public opinion into consideration" because that translates to, "We'll glance over it, but ultimately we're the ones making the final decision here so your opinion is null and void."
I think BTS's military service is going to be a trial run for the relationship between K-pop and the military / Korean government. If this service is "successful", (keeping in mind that the definition of success might be determined via the Department of Defense), then the chances of furthering that bill for K-Pop exemptions probably won't happen.
I think I've said this before but I'll say it again: It's all about power. The current politicians that are very set in their ways know they have limited time left, so they are doing everything possible to demonstrate their prowess before leaving office. Forcing BTS to complete military service is a BIG win for them.

I’m an American OG army mom. Why in the world after all that BTS has done for its country they want more from them. I have followed these guys from the beginning thanks to my daughter. I have enjoyed learning about food, art, culture and language (which I still can’t learn 🤦♀️). They have opened the doors for ppl to learn about other K-POP groups and the amount of income they have generated for their country is unbelievable. I just wish they didn’t have to do this. Believe me I’m not leaving them I will be here when they come back and for all the projects they have planned now. I just wish the best for them and I hope when it’s all done they won’t be used anymore by the politicians.

Yes, please submit a written petition to the government. Where can I sign? Thank you for bringing to light these issues regarding the members and their military obligations. I'm from the US and went to SK in October to see the Live Play. Their performance was phenomenal, and the amount of work they put into that show (knowing and having to conceal the fact that it would be the last before the members started enlisting) was second to none. There is no doubt that these guys are precious and need to be protected.

The petition is a great idea. I think it might actually help future groups. It's too late for BTS because no matter what decision is made in late December, Jin won't leave. If Jin does his service, the rest of BTS will do it and not let him do it alone. I think Jin is so popular and friendly, that the others near him in the military will rally around him to make him comfortable. Truthfully, I think if we are talking about fairness then there shouldn’t be a petition for future groups. If BTS who comes the closest with their accolades, can’t get exempt then I don’t think another group gets to benefit from exemption.
Stop using BTS's name to do so to gain for other groups. I am already tired of people dragging them in this controversy.
I said a petition wouldn’t do anything for BTS however, KPop shouldn’t be under different rules than classical artists so a petition might help in that respect. The ones that start the conversation on any topic of change are always cited as the example. No one is extorting BTS but rather recognizing them as the conduit for change.
tbh, since BTS didn't get exempted given all that they have accomplished then I don't think ANY Kpop group should and especially not on BTS shoulders. If in future another group ever has the reach BTS has then that group at that time can seek exemption for themselves. In fact the exemption system needs to be abolished completely since there was so much talk of fairness. Either all able bodied men are required to serve or they aren't, there should be no loopholes only for a subjective few. Also given the population issue which was brought up as a reason not to exempt there should be discussion why only men are required to serve. What will happen when they run out of a large enough number of men to be trained? If the unthinkable ever happens both men and women will need to be ready to defend themselves and their country.

I think you're overlooking one thing in the interview you gave: Most BTS fans are in fact not fans of Kpop in general nor are they primarily young people who are more prone to "move on to other groups". So I have to disagree with your statement on that. I honestly think the diversity of the fandom will work in their favour in terms of loyalty.
It's solely the (mis)treatment that they're possibly facing and the impact it'll have on them as individuals that worries me. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, but if South Korea thinks they're not under constant scrutiny from ARMY for the next two years, they're sorely mistaken and trust me - ARMY can out-perform any intelligence agency out there! I totally agree with you! I have zero interest in any of the other k-pop groups. BTS is all I need. I’ve grown to love them for the lovely human beings that they are, not for being idols or #1. This is not a “silly temporary phase” for me. This is forever. I will always follow them. I have my life and they’re part of it. They have their lives and we’re part of it. Simple. Even from a distance people who love each other make every effort to keep in touch. No other group is like BTS. They deserve an exemption bc they’ve gone above and beyond for their country, but I understand the need for all Korean men to be trained in case of war. Women too. 6 months should suffice for BTS to learn to shoot a weapon, then allow them to be free. Free to do live for themselves, it’s about damn time! They’ve earned it! I agree, I don’t most BTS fans are kpop fans or will move on to other groups. I’m 58 and American and a music not for all of those years starting with The Beatles who came to America for the first time the week I was born. BTS ARE SPECIAL. ARMY IS SPECIAL. there’s just no replacement for them and ARMY will wait for them and enjoy their individual projects and all their music till they come back. I too worry about their emotional well being and how it will affect them, their art and of course physical well being. I will pray for them everyday like my own sons.

Sending BTS to the military is the most disgusting thing I've ever heard of, the government should be ashamed of themselves for letting this happen. All the good things these young people have done in representing their country abroad, proudly defending it, spreading the good word, encouraging people to come, bringing in billions of dollars in exports, concerts and tourism, and how do they repay it? They force them to give up their careers at the height of their success, and then send them to the front lines as punishment. BTS is not like every other group. They have become international ambassadors. I hope that SK military and government at least consider this and maybe they can figure out a way for their status to help promote peace and better international relations rather than war -- it sounds like wishful thinking but BTS is not just "some group" but rather leaders of an ideology of loving both self and others -- if the world operated with just these 2 ideas where would we be. We all need to channel our love to the members but also to ARMY and our friends and families -- this is the difference these men want us to make. We need to be ARMY -- warriors to change the status quo and bring love back to his horribly divided world. It sounds so simple but maybe we need to do just that, go back to simple.
Really impressive that you, Sean, were able to interview with ABC on exemptions. I still support these exemptions but also feel like it's important to honor any member's preference to complete service and duty to country. I'm very concerned about how the military can manage equal treatment of enlistees. As far as aging out of interest in BTS I don't really think that's going to happen. I believe most Army will be trying to find news about them while they're in service. Remember you guys, here in the states I feel we're left out of the loop sometimes. I am disappointed that the South Korean government couldn’t or wouldn’t find a way to add exemptions for pop culture. Especially after everything BTS has done for the country. At the same time I’m proud of them for choosing to go because no one can say to them oh you got of military service cause your BTS. No one can look down on them. I just pray they don’t have to go through what G-Dragon did. I hope the other soldiers respect their space and treat them kindly. I hope they’re not bullied by anyone like their superiors. So the moment is finally here Jin finally enlists in less than 2 days now.. For now Army is praying for the Boys Safety during their service.. At maximum the Government could have at least reduced their service term or just give them Boot camp training and set the idols free and give a choice it to be voluntary not Mandatory ..its not that they have to give the 18 months of their lives The service can affect the guys mentally too.. The question is will the BTS boys or any other idol's state of mind be the same when they return because we don't know what they would have to go through their training..

I too am an American Woman. I'm going to put this bluntly. BTS put SK on the map globally. The number of people that came to SK because of BTS massively increased their economy by leaps and bounds. The entire world that so deparately couldn't wait till they came to their country to perform. All the American Awards shows, talk shows, news shows that all were waiting for them to visit and give an interview. BTS's Global success and the love of people from everyone around the world says it all. SK didn't use to be a big tourism country. Now it is because of??? Yea BTS!!!!! I personally feel that demanding they enlist in the military is a very stupid move. Economically and in every other negative way possible. This makes me very sad and angry! 😡😔

Personally I am extremely angry with the Sth Korean Government for not giving their greatest export BTS an exemption, it is well known that idols face abuse in the Sth Korean military not only from other enlistees but by officials, many after Military service have ongoing mental health issues because of it, and many idols do not return afterwards.

The issues I see for Jin are multiple... too long to detail here bc I'd wind up writing a thesis. My only comfort is that I think Jin is good at listening and taking advice from elders. I have to believe that he is surrounded by good people who can guide him and give sound advice. His biggest challenge will be his headstrong personality and learning to keep his mouth shut and his emotions /true thoughts hidden. And to be just another regular grunt on the line. I think by the end of 5 wks of basic training it's gonna be a rude awakening.
The other thing Jin has going for him is he has a strong sense of functioning as part of a team. In the military the unit functions as a whole. Not individuals. Jin has been doing that for a long while.
Altho he has a strong developed sense of individuality, doesn't seem good at holding back & can be confrontational without hesitation. This is what I think people are worried about. His lack of restraint. He just says, does what he wants. He doesn't shy away from confrontation & is heavily invested in the Korean honorific system. So, is he gonna insist that all his juniors speak formally with him? I donno. I know that BTS internal dynamics are still very much based on hoobae-sunbae social definitions. This is NOT a bad thing. They love and care for eo immensely. Look out for eo. But, Jin is sensitive about that, being the "eldest." And, he also takes his role as the eldest very srsly. So it's not a take & no give scenario. Pls don't misunderstand what I'm saying here.
Jin is also very physically fit. Otherwise, his age could be a real handicap vs an 18 or 19 yo.
There will always be ppl who like us, ppl who are jealous or envious & spiteful. Up to now, the members have been protected and have known mostly love and adoration. Reality can be harsh. But - in order to get as far as they have I'm sure they have faced many tough days and tougher challenges. They may all be stronger than we think. I think ppl are most worried for Jin bc of how he is, somewhat awkward, admittedly clumsy (he makes fun of himself abt learning the dance moves), yet headstrong & confrontational.
I'm just srsly pissed off and angry about the whole situation. It's complete effin b.s. It's like them telling Samsung to shut down for 2 yrs. Except BTS brings in higher revenue per year. If BTS truly is a NATIONAL TREASURE, they aren't preserving them well at all. What a bunch of f'in hypocrites.

Lee Sueng Gi said it took him 3 yrs to recover & he really can't sing like he used to. Same with Song Joong Ki.
And every single 1 of them have been injured at 1 time or another (BTS members). It can't be helped. Even Gold Medalists get injured.

I have heard some terrible stories about the terrible treatment of celebrities doing their military service. I just hope Jin or any of the other members do not experience any of these terrible things and come back to us safely.

I saw the interview when it aired, and I thought you were very articulate in discussing the situation. I thought this news report provided information that was helpful to individuals who don't understand Korean military requirements, as well as the different viewpoints, issues, and concerns.
I'm a 67 year old fan of K-POP. My first group was Got7 then I learned about other groups. BTS is at the top of my list! One of the things I'm concerned about the guys doing their service is how other non show business military members treat them. I've heard some guys are so jealous because their girlfriends/wives are huge fans and worry the men may cause problems for them. How will the military handle this if it occurs?

I understand the situation SK is living and why there is the forced enlistment, but at the same time I think BTS would(and did) more for their country while continung their activities. If not an exemption, they could have made them do only the 5 weeks of training. They deserved more respect, in my humble opinion.
So why were they could just do that you know the Boot Camp and maybe a few months I mean come on now compromise it’s not like this is there lifetime career you know where they’re going into the military is going to be like a lifetime thing you know and a peaceful say that the Boot Camp is not enough how about doing six months. Or a how about 12 months and that’s actually a good compromise and still having to do a before 18 to 20 since military is not always not the career choice and they’re Not exactly going to live the military life you know
I can't see why there isn't a compromise in this situation. I mean Son the soccer player, though under contract with Tottenham managed to do a very shortened term of military training, about a month I think. So why can't BTS do a shortened length as well. I believe they would be conflicted if they don't serve, so a compromise I believe would suit all concerned. I don't see why it should be 100% one way or the other.
It seams that the most worrying problem is when BTS actually enters the military to do their duty. Their safety in the military needs to be watched more that anything else. We know BTS has earned enough kudos for South Korea by earning an amazing amount money for the country. So please lets keep our hope up that the military will treat BTS with respect and not do anything that would adversely effect BTS. I am sure BTS will go into the military respecting all those in the institution.

Forwarding ARMY’s comments re BTS military enlistment to the government is a smart idea. IMHO, paper would trump the internet, and of course it must be done ASAP as it’s already Dec 11. I am a senior fan of BTS, and a subscriber to your great channel, which is richly deserving of many subscribers.
The controversy was caused because there are exemptions. The question became “why not recognize BTS’ contribution with an exemption.”
If there are no exemptions serving would not have been an issue.
I listen to BTS because they are more than a boy band. They are the most creative group I’ve listened to - there are layers to their work. Their journey inspires me.
That said, I am not seeking to listen to another group. I will wait for all of the members to finish their solo projects, serve their mandatory military service, and come back. They will grow during their time away from the cameras.

I agree on sending the petition - it's a good reminder that yes, we are watching. These are my thoughts: It sounds like service isn't such a bad thing, - it's a break and a new part of the journey of growth. However, the treatment and possible infliction of abuse/trauma of high profile artists needs rethinking. It's not special treatment, it's taking care of the investment. I also think they need to be more lenient in allowing groups to perform and keep the ball rolling on the career - just not at the same level. That way fans keep in touch. At first I was worried about Jin, and the others. They are highly creative sensitive souls. They are tough too, and will be fine as they are used to working in a team environment. I already am and have been resigned to the fact that BTS is going into the military. I think all along they knew they were going. Even Jin said he was planning on going shortly after their Festa ‘22 dinner in June, but then the Busan concert came up, etc., & BTS wanted to do a proper goodby to the ARMYs, though we didn’t know about the announcement of military enlistment at the time. I always felt like the haters out there would just criticize BTS for not serving. I have no doubt that ARMYs will wait & welcome them back with open arms! Maybe a few fans will out-age them, but the diversity of true ARMYs (ages, backgrounds, globalness) will keep them going! As a seniorARMY, I know I will never outgrow BTS! I’m sure Hybe and BigHit have it all planned out, constantly keeping ARMYs engaged & informed, with never ending content to entertain us. I have not felt any void since BTS talked about taking a ‘break.’ Plus, there is a never ending amount of YT content (old & new) to keep us occupied. We’ve endured Covid and the time flew by (it’s almost 3 years later). I’m sure this time, till 2025, will fly by too. I just hope some maniacal fans don’t show up on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see what the media puts out there that day. I guess I will be waiting & watching from afar! 👍🏼💜🫶🏼

I definitely think you should send that written petition to the government. All politicians love paper. Even if it doesn't work, and the answer is still no, at least we were given a voice and said our peace to the officials. As for Jin and the rest of the guys, I think they'll be okay in the military. I do worry for their safety, but I think people will be so busy trying to make friends with them (because who doesn't want to become best friends with a global superstar) and take pictures with them, etc., they're not even going to think about abusing them or taking naked pictures of them. And if some type of incident does happen with any of the members that will blow up on an global scale, and I don't think the SK government or military wants that. I'm pretty sure they realize that BTS has become the face of SK and know that a bad incident would be a disaster for them.

I think it would be a good idea to print the petition off and send it in to the government officials. It would give them something to hold and look at. Most people don't see them as K-pop Idols they see them as cultural ambassadors, that helped a lot of people learn about South Korea with all its beauty and culture. They do deserve to be giving and exemption for all the hard work they have done for their country all this time.
What do NCT, SJ or EXO have to do with BTS? Military exemption question was only raised due to BTS impact, it's laughable to mention others in the same category. I'm upset ABC doesn't understand the difference between BTS and other kpop groups.
Meanwhile, Korean officials are attributing the success of BTS to themselves and using them as they want for promoting soft power of Korea. Ironically, it was because of BTS that I have learned about all the corruption, flaws of educational system and frustrations of my generation in Korea.

It still brings tears to my eyes when I think about it and they day is coming a lot sooner than I'd like, but this was his desicion and I will stand by it. It's going to be a bit awkward for a little while, but I'd like to think Jin will come back before we know it.
I heard somewhere that people with connections and sons of government officials can get away with not serving in military. Is that true? Because if it is then politicians are hypocrites about not giving exception to BTS because they definitely should be somewhere in fine art performer list.

I don't understand the need for Media to include NCT, EXO, Enhypen to even be qualified for an exemption like BTS do. Cos the difference is pretty clear. BTS truly truly deserve their exemption in every way!!! It's not just a Kpop thing tbh.
Also Imagine If in few years Media gotta publish articles like- "Mandatory Military Service put an end to the career of the Most valuable Pop act to ever walk on this planet" Cos it's crazy!!! We cannot clearly predict the future... But This military service might put a Complete full stop to BTS's growth. They had the potential to make it even bigger than the biggest could get by how they performed until today. Like You can see it in year end charts!! BTS had One single Anthology album+Vocal line subunit single but still they were The only Kpop act in many of the official year-end Charts. Dynamite despite being released 2 years ago, Was the highest charting for Any Kpop songs in Many Official charts. This speaks the volume!! But this might never be the case for future. It isn't even sure Another Kpop act would grow as big as BTS did. I mean not even Blackpink's (The next Kpop act that has potential anywhere closer to BTS) CB could surpass BTS's 2 year old songs. South Korea might not just lose BTS but also have to face the ending of the Hallyu wave that only BTS could begin. The Hallyu might have to go back to Ground Zero pre-2017 era of a Niché community!

I can't stop thinking about what you wrote! They are at their BEST, their popularity has grown immensely in the last 3 years and it could continue to grow! They were unable to do concerts and many things for 3 years due to covid! and now this!! It makes me very sad because they LOVE to do concerts, they say it all the time!!
Permission to dance concerts were incredible! a level of performance that I have never seen in other artists! and so at their best they clip their wings with this!! is incredible!

This whole situation makes me so angry. BTS has been horribly taken advantage of by the government. I’m 67 year old Canadian who was thinking of travelling to South Korea only because of BTS but right now I’d rather spend my tourist dollars in Japan. My next tv? Not going to be Samsung. My next car? Not going to be Hyundai or Kia. And yet, when I tried to rally friends with me, they all said it’s Jin’s decision.
AND WHAT HAPPENS if one of the members gets severely injured or KILLED??? There will be world wide mass hysteria. I just wish the ere was a way to shame this government into finding their balls and saying BTS is my chi more valuable performing than holding a gun.

Going to the Military is NOT a personal choice it is mandatory in Sth Korea even if they don't want to go they can't even say they don't want to go due to Government backlash BUT logically NO artist would want to halt their career at this time given they have really just broken into the greater Western Market.
Personally I am extremely angry with the Sth Korean Government for not giving their greatest export BTS an exemption, it is well known that idols face abuse in the Sth Korean military not only from other enlistees but by officials, many after Military service have ongoing mental health issues because of it, and many idols do not return afterwards and historically groups break up.
I am Boycotting everything Sth Korean, including many popular brads as well as other Kpop Groups. I know from other successful protests, like climate change protests, the place to make the most impact is via the economy.

The Korean government is willing to spend millions to assure Jin’s security and safety while serving. The government needs to understand and remember that there’s 6 more members who will need this millions worth of security. This is a big lo the government considering the loss of billions from BTS activities and the millions worth of security expenses for each member while serving in the military. It is not a problem that they will serve in the military, but that they deserve fair treatment and respect for their achievements and contributions from the authorities in their country. But that doesn't happen. Korean politicians could decide on an exception or at least some shortened term of service. But they don't.
I found this quote under "The untouchable chaebols of South Korea". "But there is zero chance of finding the children of said politicians/CEOs in the military (many kids from powerful families find a way to skip military service)."

A lot of Idols have served in the military and return to their group. Loyal Army's, will wait for BTS, 2 years will past by so fast.

I’m numb and sad about BTS going to military, It’s really hitting me hard. The present government and previous president use BTS. We just have to hold on until 2025. BTS forever💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Please print the petition and send it. I would sign a petition. If there is an online petition please send it also. It needs to be seen and heard/read. If we can do anything please let us know and yes a crazy fan directory is a must. If any BTS members are hurt or bullied we need to speak for them. And let the Korean government know we won’t stand for it. The members military service should be cut shorter at the very least. If not they do the 5 weeks and that’s it. They are done. If the government doesn’t do something then when BTS comes back they don’t do anything to help support their country. Plain and simple they have all done enough. Army will be watching and watching. We won’t be going anywhere.
The worst of all this is that we will not know if they suffer something like bullying, injuries or whatever! We will never know your experience there unless they have to transfer you or something like that!!

He seemed fine, you never suspected that something was wrong with him. and a few weeks later it was learned that they had to transfer him to public service because the other results of that unit were having bullying, and he suffered from panic attacks and severe depression!!

I don't want to find out in 5 years that they had a horrible time!! nor that any photo of them that has been taken without consent comes out!
