    I tried cutting and soldering the wire up in the arm instead of right at the connector, and while it made the soldering easier, the new side no longer extends up and down. Can still adjust with the other side. Your method is definitely better. Thanks for the teardown! Happy to at least have an intact pair again

      I might make another video, I have changed the location of the repair to the middle of the slider shaft, it fits nicely and is out of sight, not sure if it is easier or not but it seems better overall!

    I had ordered the replacement arm bar before I even opened up my xm5's. I would have been lost without you and I never would have considered soldering. @darkwarrior478  6 месяцев назад +2

      Have been successfully repairing these like this for over a year now and it is reliable, problem I ran into with pin removal was they dont always stay in the socket after reinstalling and that is not good, also found I broke the tiny locks quite often, this works very well in my experience!

    • @tspike7
      @tspike7 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@darkwarrior478 I got the 1mm shrink tube but its shrink rate is only 2:1. I've measured the existing wires -- and even accounting for a little squish -- are around .37mm each. So I've ordered some .5mm shrink (1.7:1 shrink rate)
      I dont have much room to stagger the solder joints.

    • @darkwarrior478
      @darkwarrior478  5 месяцев назад

      @@tspike7 You wont need to stagger them, as long as you keep away from connector by at least quarter inch you will be fine, they fold over nicely, not sure what my shrink rate is on shrink tube I purchased, bought a bulk lot of it in orange and white.

      @@darkwarrior478 can you tell what gauge wire is being used? I may have messed up a bit. If I can extend the wires just a bit, I should be able to make it work (also give a bit more maneuverability)
      I have some small shielded wire but it’s prob 24 gauge and I don’t want impedance mismatching

    • @darkwarrior478
      @darkwarrior478  2 месяца назад

      @@tspike7 Have not had any issues with the 1mm shrink and in fact am very impressed with the shrink tube I purchased, it is very high quality heat shrink, you wont change the impedance enough to notice without measuring it, you get the wires mismatched and that is obvious though, much noise in one speaker.

    I was so mad I had mine 7 months, and when I called Sony, thinking my warranty should surely cover their shitty build on these right?? You probably already know the answer, but check this out. The rep said "They were not designed to last so we can do a one time favor and give you $50 off another pair" 😦🤬🫢😣😣🤨 I couldn't believe she said what she said! All of it was mind blowing to me the fact that she was admitting these $350 headphones were not going to last even a year, or the BS $50 off *another* pair?? for what!? another 6 months? I was thinking I would never buy Sony again. I had the CH710 i think thats the ones forever, then got my son the newer version of those, so it was a no brainer to get these, it never occured to me to look so close at the build like this. I tried to fix them and couldn't so I am super happy to find this video, but damn! what the hell!!?? Who else was super pissed to find that this break happened to all of us?

      That is why I repair it the way I do, removing the pins from the connector is very tedious, not to say it can not be done but in my opinion is just as likely to break a catch on the socket for the wire as anything, I have done this myself, you usually can find a company that sells the parts to get one from, I have a bunch so send me an email and I can send you one.

    Watching this just makes me more pissed off with Sony. How absurd that their community has to study videos like this so we can repar their poorly designed product. Sony quoted me $150 to quote for the repair. It's scary to think what the repair cost would be on top of that. No doubt it would be more than the value of the headphones. I'm going to send mine to the country president and tell him he can have his plastic trash back.

    • @darkwarrior478

      Hard plastic, do not use super glue of any kind it just makes a mess, you are better off using a hot iron or even a soldering iron and remelt the plastic, practice on something else first and use a filter box fan or very good ventilation as you dont want to breath the fumes, once you get it figured out you will be able to plastic weld with the best of them, after doing this you can use fingernail file or sand paper to smooth it out, paint also if you like.
