Ebony is a dark wood that comes from different species or types of trees. The trees that produce ebony generally grow in tropical regions.
Only a small number is prized for its dark wood. Indian ebony trees, coromandel and calamander, are the ones that produce some of the best qualities of ebony wood. They grow mostly in India and Sri Lanka.
As it is a highly prized wood due to its high quality 🔝, there are poachers that have put the existence of ebony at risk and, therefore, there is a shortage of this wood. This, together with the slow growth of the tree and the high demand, means that the prices are among the highest in the world 💰. Currently, there are laws that help prevent over-exploitation of this valuable wood ⛔.
