On Friday, when she celebrates her happy 5th anniversary, I will be "celebrating" the 2 year anniversary of my husband going to Heaven. I've been struggling greatly as you can imagine, wondering how to move forward after 47 years. I need to look ahead - not behind. Not to the right or to the left! I helped my mom hold a garage sale this past weekend. It was a mad house!!! We only listed everything for $1.00. It really put things in perspective. Even if it’s $1.00, it doesn’t deserve to be in my house or creep into my thought process. It was so liberating for my mom to clean out 3 closets stuffed full of clutter.

Always appreciated my mother helping me learn to sew. I was very tall and skinny and clothes from the store never reached my wrists or covered my ankles. By the time I was in high-school, I could make a pair of pants in two hours or remake second hand clothes to fit my body or update a style. Game changer. Feeling full of gratitude.

Coming out of this pandemic phase of life, there are a few things that I look at differently. In the past I volunteered for everything, I sewed for hours a day making 3000 masks to donate, charity quilts, etc. people would say, when do you sleep? This period of time eventually made me realize that I need to slow down and appreciate my life and do some of the things I really want to do for me. Your videos have helped me hone these thoughts. Decluttering has given me such satisfaction. At one time I had so many sewing projects (all organized), that my daughter said, mom, you look like a hoarder. I’m not going to do that any more. Finished projects get donated, and no new ones are coming in. For myself, I started an online college course (free), something I’ve been wanting to do. At my age, I’ve given up the hope for a PhD, but I think I earned that in my 50 years of raising kids. Twice I started writing a book, my life has been a roller coaster of challenges and adventure, God has brought me through so much. I think this has been a time to reboot! God bless both of you and your families.

Here's my inventory management tip of the week:
One thing I started pre-Covid19 was listing everything we consume, the annual total of that item and how frequently I replace it (Ex. Dry Cat food, 6 bags/year, 2 bags every 4 months). It gave me data about our consumption habits which then drove my shopping habit. Plus it helps with budgeting since you can anticipate and dare I say plan for purchases. Of course if you have $$ and space you can just buy a year's worth of items and be done with it (I do this with toilet paper so wasn't affected by recent shortages). I keep this inventory in my phone with check boxes that check off when we're stocked up.
I don't do this with food, but things like detergent, toilet paper which I generally don't need to shop for since I know the brand and quantity. When I started this it kept me out of stores unless something had run out. Really helped me throughout Covid19 and I plan to continue since I don't enjoy shopping for this sorts of things all that frequently.

I would have gotten the mirror. With such little damage, the savings financially would have been a bonus and a dab from a paint pen would have fixed it. My goal is to be minimal and frugal. You can have both. I also think it's important to be prepared. My parents always had food storage and Covid was an excellent example of why that's a good policy. So here's my thought:
*Keep what you love, get rid of the rest.
*Get out of debt and stay free financially.
*Be frugal in new purchases, but don't compromise (You said the mirror was exactly what you wanted except for that little flaw) and choose quality over quantity.
    *Be prepared.
    -Savings for financial loss
-Rotate enough food and disposable items for a comfortable length of time in case of economical loss, stocking up on only items you would currently use (barrels of wheat are useless if you don't know how to use it)
    *Learn useful skills.

One thing I learned also is I never feel guilt when I shop, because if I buy it I need it and went intentionally shopping for it. I never stock up anymore, my pantry is never cluttered, if something is $4 for $8 I will only buy 2
And they still give you the sale price.

My mom was and still is a maximalist. I remember going to my best friends' houses and noticing that it was more fun to play and we would play longer. Her mom was and still is a minimalist. My husband and I got married and moved into our house and I instantly said nope, too much stuff we will be decluttering. I just did it and found your channel during that time. It was the extra push I needed. My mom still has 4 jam-packed storage units, I now have developed my muscles to go through all of them. Love you ladies. Happy Sunday!

I know exactly what you mean when you get greater joy out of the treasure hunt than the shopping. I went to the Christmas village in my city yesterday and I literally could’ve spent several hundred dollars on several items that I could’ve used in my home and would’ve loved but because I didn’t go out with the intention of buying those kinds of items I didn’t want to just buy them. I ended up coming home with one ornament for my new tree and I spent $14. I love and appreciate that one ornament so much more and it just feels so much more special because it’s not surrounded by other impulse items like socks, lamps, artwork etc. And it’s all because of the mindset shift I’ve gone through watching you and your other RUclips collaborators. Thank you!

I can totally relate to Diana's Batiste Dry Shampoo moment! I rarely impulse buy anymore and am more likely to take it back if I realize it doesn't serve a purpose or isn't something I like. Two things: One, I adore that top on you, Diana! It really brings out your coloring.
The other, I went shopping yesterday for hair products and only bought one!! Seems like a small thing but I had prompting to buy more. I recently had a hair analysis done (like I sent off my hair to be analyzed under a microscope) in the hopes of getting better outcomes with caring for my curly hair. They analyzed my current products and some I listed that I’d like to try. Turns out my hair gel can be problem with humidity (which I was seeing, but now I know why) so I went to buy a different gel that they recommended instead. Well, they’d also mentioned that it may be beneficial to use fewer product lines / brands for better results. So I had a clear excuse to buy new shampoo and conditioner even though they told me there was no problems with my current ones. And I have 3 full bottles of shampoo at home!! Still, I stood there in that aisle for probably 5 minutes debating with myself, thinking about how fun it is to try new stuff but the money and the waste and how I’d have to re-home my current bottles of shampoo because I can’t waste them and how that’s an added hassle I don’t need and I walked away with only the gel. I know it seems like nothing but I really struggle with decisions and getting to the point where I realized that one change is good enough for now and that my priority is to not buy over buying my way to a new “better” solution to magically fix my problems is an old habit I’m shedding in my pursuit of a more minimal life. Just a small example of how I’m flexing my minimalist mindset muscle, and it feels great!
Love all that you do! Thank you for being such a joy to watch and learn from.

In my family, the line went like this... girl, boy, girl, girl, girl, girl, girl.... so, we definitely had hand-me-downs for us girls. Little did us girls know, my Mom often worried that we would resent that part of our upbringing, but we LOVED when it was time to pass down clothes and see who got what next.😍🥰
Because of that, as well as needing to save money in other areas of our life, we learned the value of things and moments and memories in life. 💜
Now, as a Mom, I find myself worrying that, because of it being so easy these days to aquire whatever it is that we're needing or wanting, my children won't understand the value of things and moments and memories as much as they should.😬🤷‍♀️
I've always been a tightwad and careful about how I spend money, but after coming to better understand minimalism and how important it is to simplify my home, I'm even more intentional about what I buy, for these reasons: I don't want to be bogged down taking care of things, when what's most important to me is taking care of the special people in my life, I want my children to learn that, as well and I also don't want my children to inherit a bunch of pointless junk from me.
I'm definitely in that moving forward category! 🙌 I am so inspired by the lesson and encouragement of the children of Israel and Joshua and Caleb finally accomplishing that goal!!🙌
Lord, help us to let go of the fear, take each step and LIVE in the victory and power that You have given!!🙌🙌
Happy Anniversary, Diana!!🥰💐 My husband and I just recently celebrated our 5th, as well.🥰

I first learnt about Minimalism from Joshua Becker but I started decluttering after binge watching your channel. The recent 5 minute declutter was the most powerful because somewhere along the way I lost the passion to declutter. I started with only 5 minutes but now I find myself doing more. Dawn, I am new to following you, and now catching up on some of your older posts, but we are also foster parents (we are currently serving in an unaccompanied minor refugee program) and we also took it step by step. It is so incredible now to look back and see how God was leading us from a "tugging interest" years ago that led us to host a teen who was aging out of foster care (she is a young adult now and still very much a "big sister" to our biological kids and a part of our lives), to eventually becoming a fully certified foster home and now having welcomed and said goodbye to several kids. In our family also, I was always the one ready to jump right in, and my husband needed to take it "step by step", and I think God knew that and clearly led us gradually into opening our home and family. I am so excited to see how God uses your family!
