Eve Online for the past 20 years has been the number 1 most popular sci fi space sandbox MMORPG, this game initially released all the way back in May 2003 and over the years has not only gone through numerous updates to keep itself up to date with other MMOs visually, but it’s also a game that’s fostered some of the most legendary battles and stories ever to have taken place in the MMO genre.
Just to name a few epic moments in Eve Online you had the battle of B-R5RB, a 21 hour long war in which 7,500 players battled it out and nearly 11 trillion ISK worth of ships were destroyed.
The Massacre at M2-XFE which held two Guinness world records with $378,000 worth of ships being destroyed.
What do you think about Eve Online in 2023? Is this game still the number 1 sci-fi MMORPG? should new players start playing today? let me know in the comments below!

The reason the game has a good character creator was because there actually was plans for you to walk around the station or spaceships called 'walking in stations' and back in 2019 you could walk around a single point at a station overlooking your spaceship but no one used this feature because it was slower then the other overview so it was scrapped

Eve combat seems really simple at first, almost AFK, but once you get into more complex engagements you start to realize there is a LOT to keep track of. Your damage is based on a whole bunch of factors, such as enemy resistances vs. your ammo/weapon damage type, your range to the target, your transversal velocity compared to weapon tracking, your signature radius (how big your ship is compared to enemy weapons), and that's before taking into account things like EWAR and capacitor management. You can kill battleships with frigates if you fly and fit your ship correctly, even though the battleship has way higher DPS and defenses, as it's possible to get "under" the battleship's guns with a frigate where your small size and fast speed prevents the battleship from hitting you at all.
So while PvE combat tends to be pretty chill, PvP combat is one of the most intense gameplay types in any game, and has actual stakes because you permanently lose your ship (and sometimes pod) if you lose. The "more powerful ship" thing is countered by the fact that more powerful ships are more *expensive*, which means when you eventually lose them (and you will) all you do is run out of money faster. Lots of very rich and very veteran players will fly cheaper ships in PvP just so they can afford to keep doing so.
As for the P2W thing, Eve is referred to as "P2L" or "Pay to Lose." You can get isk and training via RL money, but if you don't actually know how to fly the stuff you bought, you'll just go out and promptly lose it all. Most veteran players fund their fleets and PvP ships using purely in-game methods, often buying extra accounts from the "P2W" guys who end up feeding their blingy ships. The game also doesn't have any actual end game or objective, so "winning" is always going to be relative. Many people find flying capital ships as "winning" whereas even after 15+ years of gameplay I never want to touch the darn things.

    @1adog1 9 месяцев назад +42

One of the main things which you weren't introduced to was the concept of ship roles, and the tradeoffs of choosing a larger ship.
Pretty much every ship has stats, bonuses, and a slot layout that favors a specific role. Just the combat roles include close-range "brawling," long-range "sniping" or "kiting," logistics (space-heals), fast or hard tackle (holding ships in place), EWAR (applying debuffs), and Links (applying buffs). These roles can be used in conjunction with each other to make a set of ships into far more than the sum of their parts. We call these sets of ships Doctrines, which are created by players and change over time with the game.
You mentioned in your video a fear that combat would simply turn into a case of the bigger ship winning. A combination of stats encompassing two concepts called Application and Projection work to counteract this. Application describes how capable a ship is of applying damage to another. While not a hard and fast rule, generally larger, longer range weapons either apply less damage to or find it harder to hit smaller, closer, and faster moving targets. Projection describes a ship's ability to maneuver around the battlefield and position itself optimally. Again not a hard and fast rule, but generally larger ships are slower to turn, and have slower sublight and warp speeds. These mechanics allow smaller ships to threaten targets several classes larger than them, and is also why despite having PLEX (the item which WoW Tokens and Runescape Bonds were based on), it would be difficult to classify Eve as Pay-to-Win.

Eve was always a stunning game. Visually, incomparable to anything out there, even from way back when. Technically, you've got literally HOURS of learning to do to even SCRATCH the surface; there used to be a 'meme' of the 'learning curve' of games in comparison. Eve's point was a dead-drop massive cliff. :P
There are THOUSANDS of systems to explore, there are MILLIONS of random encounters with everything from faction N.P.C.'s to random pirates (and even an ALIEN!), you can build, or mine, or fight to make money... It's really REALLY in-depth.
C.C.P. has done an INCREDIBLE job of upgrading, and updating a beautiful game, and really making it something role-players and combat-freaks can love through two decades...
...not bad for a psychology project by a bunch of students.
    HOWEVER...
...the only people still in Eve are the desperate hangers-on...
    ...and PSYCHOPATHS.
That's right. You see, Eve Online is a money-driven slaughterhouse. You don't get to 'chill' anywhere in Eve. Well, you CAN, if you never undock. They don't tell you that in the description, do they? Or the in-game motto, 'Undocking means you consent to P.v.P.' . (that's literal; there is NO safe place in Eve Online, ANYWHERE. don't let ANYONE tell you different).
YES, it's ILLEGAL to shoot someone in high-security space...
...which they work around by having 'suicide' shooters who gun you down, after their spotter (a scanner) checks to see what you have. Meh. Maybe they kill you because they're bored. No reason at all. The 'law' isn't there to ENFORCE the law, they're there to AVENGE you in the NAME of the law. They come along and just blow up the offender. Of course, as the sector SECURITY rating drops (from 1.0 to -0.something) they appear SLOWER, and less frequently (depending on sec level).
...so you're still gonna die, and lose all your stuff you were carrying. NOTE: this is an EMPLOYMENT tactic, used to make you join a corporation! More below...
If you're not in a corporation, you WILL be soon enough. Be it a pirate group, whom will badger you while doing missions, or mining, threatening you, or stealing from you, all while taunting you to get you to join, goading you into ATTACKING them, and then they can LEGALLY fight you (or just sit back and laugh while CONCORD smacks you for attacking someone), or simply offering you EVERYTHING you could want as a new player (ships, money, parts, a place to be 'safe')...
...that's assuming they don't just tell you once you've joined them you're now a miner and you'll be spending the rest of the next few MONTHS mining for them...
...then to eventually become an 'F1-monkey' (all linked weapons are activated by pressing the F1 key...), sitting on a gate mindlessly waiting for a 'victim' to come through...
Exploring? Sure! You can do that. In a huge fleet maybe. Never mind the hostile EVERYTHING in the lower-tier sectors, but those out to PROVE themselves (and 'extract tears') HUNT you in the stranger, less populated places (if you can get to them at all).
    Solo play?
AhahaAhaAHAHaHaAHHA! Ya right. Maybe as an 'alt', mining in high-sec or something.
And if you're not RICH, forget it. Eve is VERY expensive as a pay-to-play game. C.C.P. didn't amp them graphics for FREE bub. No, you'll pay a monthly fee. Don't want to? Well, you could WORK for it in-game. This means SLOGGING every day, doing missions, mining, whatever, JUST to get the in-game currency (which, by the way is purchasable for real money) PLEX, which will expand your monthly pay-in by one month for one. They run about a MILLION in-game credits a pop if you want to buy one like that. Not sure of the rates now.
Bought some PLEX for cash and want to get some AWESOME toys?! Hey! Pay to win, right?! Nope. The rarer the stuff, the better it is. Also the more VALUABLE it is. As value goes up, the TARGET on your BACK gets bigger, and BIGGER and BIGGER! Ask the Italian lawyer who dumped six and a half grand (real cash) into the game for an awesome ship, parts, and some PLEX, who got blapped out of his ship the MOMENT he undocked, all his stuff got stolen, REBUILT it all, and got SCAMMED out of the second one, when a bunch of people said they'd move it 'safely' for him.
    C.C.P. CONDONES all this.
This game was originally a psychology project to see what people would do if given free-reign. Early on, it wasn't so bad. It took a while to figure out 'ganking' tactics. player Corps weren't so money-crazy, and gestapo as they are now. Imagine gangs of thugs whom are rich, constantly battling each other...
Eve has it's fun moments, but they are MASSIVELY overshadowed by the disappointments you'll face. It's a challenge just to get STARTED, and you'll constantly be pushed to 'join'. If you're a soloist, you're doomed. There's C.A.S. (Centre for Advanced Studies), a STARTER corporation that has for YEARS tried to HONESTLY help new players, and make a home for themselves in-world, and slowly, inevitably, been worn down. There's very few casual players in Eve.
So Mr. LazyPeon, I agree with you; your beginner eyes are witnessing one of the most VISUALLY STUNNING space games out there. Get a good look, because a few years down the road, it'll just be blood red, smoke, and fire...

All these locations are cookie cutter boxes that a 4yr old can model. All you can do is right click something and chose an action from a menu and then watch said action. ...that's a BOON actually. Find out what it's like when your enemy is spawn-camping your station, and you need to set a warp-to point somewhere EXACTLY straight-line OUT of the station, so the MOMENT you have control of the ship, you can jump away, and get clear of the fire. It all comes down to server ticks at that point.
The stations? The stations are, what, thirty years old? With some texture upgrades? Why bother with them? ROOKIES use them. @@DragonXDreiWell for starters, all of the things you mention is so much more than just that. Optimal range can differ from ship fit to ship fit, just as it can change mid fight if the opponent switches a script from Tracking speed to optimal range. Sure you can have a ship for every fight, but you can’t bring them all at the same time, so sometimes you are fighting at a disadvantage, but knowledge of manouvering, transversal and angular velocity can give you an advantage over an opponent who only knows approach or orbit. Springle on top of this, character skills, expensive modules and implants, none of which you can know before engaging in PVP. If you find all of this simple then I applaud you.

Like I said, drones, bombs, electronic warfare, and so many different things the million skills in EVE can give you an advantage over others that don't have your wallet or time. Had one of the Amarr industrial that could hit warp speeds with multiple afterburners or micro warp drives in a second. Obviously by now I imagine some things got nerfed or fixed, but there is always another way to have a few surprises.
I got all my fortune playing solo, my main source of income was ICE mining, which was just stupid AFK mining with macro recorded, whilst playing something else on another PC or watching stuff, whilst paying attention to local chat. EVE is just not fun, and it's all about who has the bigger gun, more money and more skills. I think that it is impossible for a new player to catch up in skills to someone who's been playing for over two decades.

I learned the ropes in High-Sec, killed a Moros as apart of a group on a roam in my crappy Vexor with T1 drones. I had such a blast! I was then instantly curious about nulsec, so I went there to live. I got bored and moved to wormhole space which is still my favorite part of Eve (when with a good active group). Diving into Nulsec on roams as part of a wormhole group is amazing. I haven't played for a while but I have fond memories. The combat gives you adrenaline like no other game. Like with most things though, I get bored but will go back at some point. I hear Faction Warfare is great fun these days. Maybe that will be my next calling :)

The UI experience was something I noticed as well as being a lot. I personally don't have a hard time learning interfaces and I found everything I needed to, but it was more than I really wanted to be faced with as I was looking to play casually. It wasn't necessarily just the amount of windows, it was all of the text and poor visual contrast.
I think the other thing that ultimately turned me off is the lack of truly recreational things to do in the game world. Not that that is universally bad, it was just the major determiner in realizing it wasn't the game i was looking for.

The combat in eve is the most heart racing, intense, overwhelming experience I have ever had in gaming hands down. You just need a guide. It is incredibly complex, theres like 15 variables you don't consider during the tutorial that matter in the actual game. I get why you don't know this stuff of course though, the truth is the tutorial explains nearly nothing when you consider the entire games complexity. It is as bare bones as you can imagine.

Well done on the review! A few things, Eve is not pay to win as the only way you win is to stop playing! You can spend literal hundreds of dollars to “get the edge” in a capital ship and die to a frigate gang who knows your ships weaknesses. Combat is exceedingly complex with ship types dictating your role in the fight and with such simple inputs you can find yourself in an incredibly complex 3d chess match with your opponent(s). Fleet combat, especially small to medium gang (20-50 ppl) is a gripping experience. I have never felt PvP as meaningful, and heart pounding in any other MMO. The real change for any new bro jumping into the game is the community and the lasting friendships and enemies you make. No other game gives you this freedom and flexibility to shape the landscape of the game in such a meaningful way. Every character leaves their mark on the game ..

If you're anything like me and generally play MMOs solo, one of my favorite play styles in Eve Online is solo wormhole exploration. It gives you the opportunity to find some higher value resources in lawless space with full-loot PvP allowed. Unlike jumpinng from high-sec to low-sec systems, wormholes aren't camped by player pirates on the other side, so you can safely move on after a jump into a wormhole.
To stay safe ongoing in a wormhole, the first thing you'd want to do is to find a destination to warp to, warm, and in the middle of warping, set a bookmark randomly in yhe middle. Then go back and warp to that bookmark. Then find another destination and warp to that. Then, in the middle of that warp, save another bookmark. Since thay bookmark is literally in tbr middle of nowhere (not in yhr path between any 2 objects in yhe system), you can consider it a safe area to warp to if you encounter another player.

The complexity in eve combat is very subtle. Things like range , turn speed, sig radius ( an abstract stat indicating how large your ship is ) all factor in your to-hit calculations.
If you have a big ship and are turning away from the enemy, you will miss more often. But if you turn with them you will hit them. Don't let the simplicity of the actual attacks fool you. You need to manage your capacitor, your positioning in relation to your allies and your enemies, swap your ammo for the correct range and tracking for your target, understand what on the map is really dangerous, etc. Then there is ewar, remote repair, tank management, etc.
    PVP takes years to master.

I think what new players miss regarding combat is there are hard counters to other ships and setups and there's a lot of fun in theory crafting your fittings and seeing how it performs in combat or otherwise. The game also actually forces you to be social as it requires a lot of cooperation to accomplish things, even mining is better with friends.

    • @MysticalDragon73
      @MysticalDragon73 7 месяцев назад

I miss the social aspects when you can find an active good group to chill with.. Getting on comms, shooting the breeze with friends. I keep hoping to find something similar but so far I havent. Ive tried console
I started the game in 2004 and was running 3 accounts. I was mining for isk to pay for the accounts. Then they introduced the drone regions and ruined the market. I sold my accounts. Then friends got playing. It was rough to start again. Then our new players and new corp got griefed by someone enjoying picking on newbies. I purchased an account to counter them and missed playing at a high level. Before too long I was up to 12 accounts.
I am trying not to be drug back into the back but im feeling the draw. Its just such a beautiful game.

EvE Online has experienced several revisions to the game engine over the years. In the beginning, the character creator ws limited to just a portrait. A full sized character model is less than 10 years old, which is why it's so well made compared to a game from 2003.

  • @AsteroidSolution
    @AsteroidSolution 9 месяцев назад +11

The combat is actually incredibly complex,
    Things like tracking speed,
    Transversal
    Missile explosion speed and radius,
    Resistance profiles
Tackle electronic warfare and all other things
Once you understand all the mechanics (which typically takes years to fully do) you will manually pilot your ship, clicking around in space, flying to the strength of your ships and the weakness of others,
It's really really hard for new players to get into because of how stupidly complex the game and sadly no matter what CCP do to try create a tutorial it's a game which does require a bit of time sunk into it to understand and people just don't get that in the first few hours of gameplay, meaning new players coming to eve are few and far.
I would really wish a content creator like yourself or any big content creator would sit down with what eve people call "bitter vets" and play under their guide for even 7 days, and then give an opinion at the end of it, instead of playing for 1hr getting overwhelmed by an overwhelming game, and then call it quits,
Sadly it does fall under the "this game is great after x time" flaw of many modern MMOs, but also if you like the idea of space battles and totally player run sandboxes, give eve a little bit of your time, make an assessment after a week while playing with some experienced guys,

The best thing about the combat for me is that new players are still able to contribute. EWAR, scouting and tackle is always useful in PvP. SOCT ship bonuses let you take part in PvE with less skill points. Most MMOs don't let you play the relevant content with friends until you've caught up to their level or they make a new character.

@@Renderc4tpart of Eve’s misunderstood beauty. Many new players are discouraged by how apparently “behind” they are compared to vets. But it’s a much more lateral experience than the vertical climb of many rpgs. As a veteran of many years some of my favorite pvp ships are playable quickly. Some are more friendly to lower sp than others, but you can be a contributor to pvp engagements in your first week with the right goals and guidance.

I started playing EVE in 2007 and there was nothing like that ^^
I guess the most overwhelming thing in EVE is all the learning in general.
Many people just got overwhelmed when they have to read text.
Some people learn things by greabbing a book or searching the internet by themselves.
Some people learn things by getting fed with a little spoon by someone who needs to be the teacher.

There's a lot of contextual menus in EVE. The reason why you couldn't use the other weapon is it was not a "civilian" version and essentially an actual weapon in comparison. You needed to either drag the Crystal Lenses onto the module icon, or in space you right-click your gun to change crystal/ammo type (Can be used to change damage type of your weapon).
Also, seeing some of the comments, it is never too late to play the game and make a difference with joining the right group. There is an age-old meme (mostly relevant to PVP):
"My ship costs less than your ammunition.
My modules were all picked off NPCs.
I don't even think my weapons are loaded.
And I'm about to ruin your life."
(Essentially, you don't have to shoot something, you can just CC a pvp target to prevent it from running away, and your friends kill it and you're credited as vital to the kill).
This is still very relevant today, and I still see lots of new players making this kind of impact and using skill to overcome hubris of older players.
