I always loved Zakk Wylde's no bullshit attitude towards everything. That's why he's good. He never had time for any bullshit or distractions. He wanted to be a great guitar player and he set out and did it. I watched an interview with him once where he's answering a question about how to overcome road blocks in guitar skill progression and he says he always thought of it like a video game--you play it and you play it over and over and eventually you're good enough to get to the next level.
Considering that he’s a solo guitarist in a band he uses the chorus mainly live for a double tracking effect. That’s one of the zakk’s huge sound techniques
I like how after explaining that his overdrive pedal is dialed to the max and then knobs removed that it only adds a little sustain and does not affect the tone of the guitar.
They always talk about Slash's "Feel". I'm sorry, but this guy has tons & tons of emotion. He plays beautifully clean & crushing with the gain up. No matter how loud he plays, it's never harsh. I can listen to him forever. He puts Slash to shame, in my opinion of course.
His pickhand technique is mind blowing!! His wrist never moves, it's all in his arm, but his speed is second to none. I would kill to have that kind of control.
Nice thing about the ZW OD is it can quickly be opened up, and a nice external toggle switch can be installed in about 2 minutes flat giving you the option to switch it up between the ZW "signature" OD and a creamier bluesy OD. If you're an intermediate guitarist and struggling to get those pinch harmonics everyone wants to hear, it'll give you a step in the right direction as well.
Fuck, I wish I could pull those pinch harmonics out of the guitar like Zakk does! And his vibrato is so wide and tight, meaning it stays in key the whole time, not easy to do. One of the best ever!
Guys - we are listening to this ON RUclips and the sound was most likely recorded with a video camera's microphone. The sound is very compressed and you cannot judge the sound of his rig based on what we are hearing here.
Had the AVT 50 watt head , regret ever getting rid of it. Although I traded it for a create power block that has been a great work horse for 20 years now.
Dennis Stratton (ex-iron maiden) uses a valvestate live, as does Dave Edwards, who he plays with, and they both sound great, so yeah, it is pro tone. Also, Ive got an amp that has a valve pre and solid state power, and that also sounds amazing. The tone is derived from the pre amp more than the power amp when it comes to overdrive. The solid state makes it easier to play at lower volumes, in fact, because you don't have to worry about getting power through the valves.
i recently bought a pedalboard with some effects on, including an overdrive pedal. i get a quite nice sound with it but i want to get a nice sound from just the amp aswell :P
The exact same thing here. I bought an Epiphone Les Paul and the MG15. I was so happy. I kept thinking "Fuck yeah, a Les Paul and a Marshall! Now I can rock it out..." 15 minutes after I plugged in, I was going "What the fuck was I thinking?" NOT the same as the real thing. Never again. I saved and got the Marshall Slash AFD100, a 412 cab and a Gibson Les Paul. Now I am blowing it out large time. Save your money and get the good shit. No comparison.
I was going to watch this video as a guide to pedals. Then I heard Zakk telling me he could record an album with a mini Marshall MG half stack and knew not to believe anything that came out of his mouth :D.
Looks like he does most of his speed picking from the elbow which is interesting. I would think he would pick more from the wrist since it's more efficient.
@delantey any tone chaser will tell you a tube preamp and solid state power section doesnt sound right. however, a solid state preamp and tube power section can get you good sounding results if dialed in correctly.
But my question is... Does he only NEED the OD pedal because the JCM800 can't push the Gain needed for those Harmonics and Squeals? Can you get the Zakk tone using a High Gain head like a 5150, Masa Dual Rec, Diezel etc... without the OverDrive Pedal?
and the pre and power sections are equally important in delivering tone. its like the engine and transmission in a car. the quality/condition/type of one will greatly affect the performance/response of the other. the preamp section does handle most of the tone, but if its not processed well through a good power section, you lose alot of tone. theres a reason 95% of pros use 100% tube amps.
"as long as it says marshal we're good to go!" amen Zakk! Got a Jcm 800 2203 100watt heat, jcm2000 tsl and two Jcm 800 1960 cabs, and they rock 100 times better than some of the crap from other companies out there.
Jimmy Hendricks I've played through pretty much everything and Marshall are the bottom of that list. You can always tell a marshall and not in a good way.
They are all in front just as you see on his board in that same order.... including the carbon copy-not shown here. That would go before the chorus and after the over drive as he uses chorus last to run into two heads as it has 2 outputs.. Reverb added by the sound guy when he uses delay, otherwise the repeats would be a mess.I run in that exact way and with the right amps it is sellar
Eddie Van Halen hasn't used a Marshall since he was recording Van Halen 1... (& yeah, that's right, "eruption" was recorded on a 1968 Marshall 1959 Super Lead, w/ "Frankenstrat" & at the time, it didn't have a Floyd Rose tremolo, it had a 6-Hole classic Strat tremolo... plus a Maestro Echoplex, Univox EC-80 Echo Unit, a 1970s "Script Logo" MXR Phase 90 & The Sunset Sound studio Reverb Room was used to add reverb (Plate Reverb)
well, there are "pros" who use line 6 amps live, but that doesnt mean it's a pro tone. to each their own man. personally, i think it comes to down to eprsonal preference. one of the best amps ive seen is what i own, a bugera 6262 head, and that thing sounds phenomenal at low volumes, part of why i love it. only amp i would prefer over it is 1 of 3: framus cobra, diezel herbert, or bogner uberschall. killer tones out of those heads.
The sound sucks because its a cheap camera mic. You can tell that from the get-go when his voice is muffled. And yes, he was paid to say that Marshall is the bees knees, but he's been playing them for a looong time, and endorsing them for a long time as well. I challenge you to find a picture of Zakk Wylde playing without a Marshall nearby.
Now he created Wylde Audio, but when he don't have his WA stacks he use Marshalls, trust me, Marshall is the finest of all amp brands, oh yeah, and Dime
Those Marshall stacks behind him are actual size Zakk is just really really tall
Yeah he is very tall
Hes 6foot 3.
No way?!! Wow, He’s like a giant
@@lifegoeson2183 I thought this but apparently he isn't more than 5"10. I was surprised too.
6 2 or 187 cm
He's 6foot 2.

Yeah totally! It's also because he has the biggest passion for it. Also you gotta love that video game to death to keep going \m/ rock on
Phaser, chorus AND Rotovibe. Zakk loves his modulation effects.
Considering that he’s a solo guitarist in a band he uses the chorus mainly live for a double tracking effect.
That’s one of the zakk’s huge sound techniques

Marshalls - 0:00
Dunlop Wylde wah - 0:52
Dunlop Rotovibe - 1:01
Dunlop EVH Phase 90 - 1:32
Dunlop Wylde Overdrive - 2:14
Boss Chorus Ensemble - 2:50
what an amazing musician, every time he touches the guitar it sounds amazing
Facts
"as long as it says marshall, you're good to go!"
That’s facts
That's true unless it's a Code amp.
God I miss 2013
Is this pre china?

Just get a cheap boss sd1 and play around a bit, that’s all he uses to do that.
Love this guy. He can play it all.
Sounded Clean nice Zakk
My favorite amp is the Hiwatt D103, but I also love the Vox Nightrain and there cabinets are killer.
He was using the chrome covered EMGs. I believe the only guitar Zakk has without EMGs in it is his Razorback which is stock with the dime combo.
Zakk is god damned amazing. A real legend. Humble and cool as hell too.
That little riff he plays at 1:20 is so fucking awesome!
That's machine gun man from pride and glory. Awesome tune!
@@josephcullison363it’s not… I thought it was but no it’s completely different.
Marshall amps always come delivered with a pack of beer...
I saw Zakk warm up on the new Unblackened live album and he sounded awesome. Anyone that days he can't play anymore knows nothing
Nice vid. Marshall says it all. Gotta love it.
That rotovibe is amazing. Wish they still made them.
love zakk playing and yes marshall is the king of rock amps and the fender hotrod deville 2x12 is a close second
Killer boots, man!

Great vid! Thanks for uploading!
Q1. Whats the difference between rotovibe and tremolo?
Q2. Does he use the overdrive just for solos?
Q3. No delay?
Awesome Man Zakk!!!

Zakk is a monster player............and a funny m/f to boot. I can't get enough
These harmonics are fucking amazing
Can you only get that on a tube amp?
@jw11432 the valvestate amp that he is using has tubes in the preamp
Had the AVT 50 watt head , regret ever getting rid of it. Although I traded it for a create power block that has been a great work horse for 20 years now.

Hey, that makes perfect sense. Thanks for confirming something I already thought for a while.
the power to his playing is the beer bottles beside his amps
And talent!
The first part of the solo is taken from Eddi Van Halen's - Eruption solo, and the second half seems to be just improv in the same key.
Which is a beautiful thing
This guy is a legend jaha
i recently bought a pedalboard with some effects on, including an overdrive pedal. i get a quite nice sound with it but i want to get a nice sound from just the amp aswell :P
it does, i get a nice clean sound. fenders are known for that but my driven sound isnt so great
Zakk is the best hands down

Anyone know the song he used when demoing the rotovibe?
When he plays the solo while he kicks on the phaser and the OD, is the solo a improv solo or is it in any of zacks song??

ENGL invader, Peavey 5150/6505 or a Mesa Mark V or Rectifier would disagree with that. The JCM 800 is an ok amp but it's certainly not a top tier.
wasn't saying those amps were crap troll, just that "in my "opinion" Marshall rocks, played them for 10 years now and wouldn't have anything else
Jimmy Hendricks I've played through pretty much everything and Marshall are the bottom of that list. You can always tell a marshall and not in a good way.
and that's ur opinion, they cant be that bad if most major artists the last 52 years have chosen them to plug into

why does he have so many marshall things? does he use two or more at once or does he use one?

They are all in front just as you see on his board in that same order.... including the carbon copy-not shown here. I can say that the MG15MSII IS infact pretty good practice amp ,i've been using one since about 2008 ,Zakk is right .
