Likely it was hacked many years ago before RUclips and web forums. There was no easy way to get proper repair advice. Glad to see everything getting restored to factory original condition.

I’m really hoping you discover what the issue was that they were trying to resolve. The crazy thing for me is the amount of work required to make those changes and assuming it worked, the person had some idea what they were doing, but not enough idea to find the fault, whether they had schematics or not.

I love the way you read the schematics like it’s a book. It feels much better now that you’ve pulled off all the hacks, and the machine has a fair chance of working right once you get some parts in. ….What happens to me is every time I put in an order at Pinball Resource, then no sooner do I pay for it, then I find I need some more/other parts. It’s like a never ending order! .. I’ve been buying from them for about 35 years. I could not have ever finished a machine without the parts and help they provide. Long live PBR.

It's coming together nicely. I remember playing either this one or the 4-player variant many moons ago.

    Hey Ron!!

I had a boss one time that prided himself on how he could bodge things together and do the chew and spit repairs. We called it "Larry-rigging". I never understood that because all it does is make it that much harder to do a proper repair later on, which never happened so the bodge became permanent. It's always best to fix something as close to factory original as possible, and if something is changed, then make an annotation on the drawings and leave them inside the machine.
Going behind a butcher job is aggravating because the only thing that you can do is go wire by wire and rebuild the entire thing. It takes less time to do it properly the first time.

And I thought the Quarterback I'm working on had some strange hacks, no contest to your Airport!

There seems to be no reason why they did all that stuff under the playfield? How strange. However nothing gets passed Ron. Great video and well worked out from the schematics.

Yes, it call Ron to be very thorough. He doesn't appear to leave a headache for the next person, just to avoid figuring out all of the headache inducing issues..

I would have assumed the previous person was actually fixing an issue and would have wasted a lot of time checking all those wires with a meter before removing the hacks and putting it back to the stock wiring. Wonder if they were thinking it was bad wiring but it was the missing pop bumper all along? Is that fuse holder supposed to be there or did they add that to use as an extra solder terminal? If it is original where are the wires that are supposed to go to it?

Looks like it was “serviced” by that electrician guy from that down periscope movie, the one that every time he shocked himself he started singing like frank sinatra. 😆
Troubleshooting is what separates the men from the boys, and nothing is more fun than coming in after someone has made things worse. Smh C’mon people!

Wow, those hacks were pretty messy. I'm glad you were able to figure out what wire was what! I'd be going insane because a lot of the wiring looked identical on that harness! Would it be better to replace all of it with appropriately colored wire for future repair? Or is that just going way too far?

  • @MrJDNJ

I'm gonna say if someone went ahead and tried connecting everything together with extra wire: they're trying to eliminate a ground-hum noise.

Very interesting video. You still didn't find the reason for all the hacks. I'm betting it was something with the missing pop bumper.

JOE, what were they trying to do by re-wiring everything, you mentioned by might have been modifying the wiring to LED lights but why would they have to change the wiring for LED lights?
