Just left my drawing table in complete frustration, working on an ordinary house cat (for days, I might add!) Layer upon layer of pastel, trying to get the colors just right, over blending, and no tooth left on the paper (pastelmat)...and there you are, posting a video! Thank you Jason! Not all is lost!
Amazing teacher and on patreon, one big problem is deciding which of the beautiful animals you want to do. Lots of great choices of exceptional lessons.ive found them very clear and concise. Such a great teacher to follow along with and you do get great results and improve every lesson.
Thank you for this tutorial. I really like your style of teaching because as you said, it's not painting by numbers but more encourages others to explore their supplies. I've decided to join your classes on Patreon 🙏
Hi there. I found your tutorial through Lisa lachri. I am a complete beginner with pastel. always thought they were awful but in recent times ive found panpastels. I also have some pit pastels that have been sitting in a draw for over twelve years. Recently I purchased some Mi teintes pastel paper as well as some pastelmat paper. Now im watching every tutorial i can find to try and work out how to start. thank you so much for your tutorials. They are great! I now have a few ideas on basic things to begin with like a eye or nose, maybe just a flower. Im a lil exited!
Awesome again Jason, but now I want more pencils of course!!! LOL!!! I am quickly becoming a serious art supply hoarder... I want every medium I see and I can't seem to have just one set of each medium, I turned the 3rd bedroom of my house into my studio a few months ago and I'm gonna need a bigger one at this rate...LOL!!! P.S. thanks for the tip on the Koh-I-Noor, I had their coloured pencils and watercolour pencils, now I have the pastel pencils and just got in the 72 set of toison d'or soft pastels. But of course now I want the carbothello's and the faber castell...etc!!!
Thank You so much, you're a Master of animal portrait in Pasteles, thanks!🙏🏻I really enjoy it, because I am painting my cat, and her fur is short, quite short, and I was having difficulty painting with pastel pencils, due to the size of the strokes. I used Panpastels under layer, then, I used the pencils to give the textures of her fur, in pastelmat paper. I would love to be able to show you my work, for your opinion...
I am a beginner, so this is probably a dumb comment but I think it would be interesting to see the difference between a painting with an under layer, like you just did, with a painting without an under layer. This might show why an under layer is critical and a step not to skip. Maybe you have already done that, and if so where can I watch that?
Thank you for all that work , it was a lot of repetition but now I understand why I am so frustrated with the layering of colored pencils not being able to put the lights on last ...trying to get a backlit look on my botanicals!
I really wish to see you doing watercolour painting....I know that's not for you...but I m so sure you turn everything into gold!☺️ The Midas touch ✨✨✨
hi Jason loving your work and videos , when im doing hairs i feel like the second layer of hairs just thickens up and blends to much with the first layer and i end up with less detail , struggling a bit Thanks garry
Extremely helpful. You are a wonderful teacher. I have never used pan. Would you suggest a set of colors to purchase? I do cats, dogs and some wildlife.
Incredible demonstration as always Jason. Love your art, content and the way you demonstrate and communicate. Do you ever do art face to face art classes? A community thing in a booked out space? Would be interested in attending if you do. All the best
I tried my pastels after over 30 years not using them . They are small to me . Also freaked me out how messy they are . Pan pastels look a dream.? Why do you think they’re so Expensive? They are bigger but that much bigger? Your thoughts
What is it with some people??? Lisa @Lachri fine art had that same issue with someone recently actually ACCUSING Lisa of copying her artwork which is apparently not very good!! Lisa had to block them from everything as she was harassing her and writing stuff in our Facebook group and everything!! Some people have serious issues... can we say egomaniac???
Ohw I thought you made the referencephoto a bit darker....but I see the painting is darker then the blured referencephoto.... so I only blur the referencephoto ?? (Or posterize?)
If you were afraid people would learn too much, you wouldn't be sharing technique, values, composition. I think color choice is important, but pale compared to correct value.
more of a new-sense.Ignore them they go away and sulk, that no one wants to be around them. Make friends so they don't hurt themselves or anyone else. OK that's stretching it a bit but.Ignoring them is nearly impossible. Worth a try.

Hi from France 🇫🇷🎨 your work is really fantastic ! Thank you so much👍
Your instructions really demystified the use of the different Patel products! Thanks you! How do you finish off these “paintings”? Fixative?
this is so amazing! definitely a great reminder for me to have some more patience with my own art!
Thank you for all that work , it was a lot of repetition but now I understand why I am so frustrated with the layering of colored pencils not being able to put the lights on last ...trying to get a backlit look on my botanicals!

So excited. I love doing eyes but they grow til i have huge alien eyes. I needed to see this and learn. Tytytyty , Onna
Take no notice of the naysayers...your demos are very informative.............people have to think for themselves too...
Extremely helpful. You are a wonderful teacher. I have never used pan. Would you suggest a set of colors to purchase? I do cats, dogs and some wildlife.
Hi. Tank you for this video. 10 years that i have not drawing.
Choosing colours is like playing the piano by ear. You have to trust your instincts and develop the confidence you’re able to pick it right.
Incredible demonstration as always Jason. Love your art, content and the way you demonstrate and communicate.

Would you show a demo using the reference photo, upside down. A neat trick I learned in art class

Amazing learnt a lot thankyou
Woua !!! This is so crazy
Really helpful, thank you
We could paint along for details but use neon glow in the dark colors for that matter. I can't believe people actually complain, ugh.
Ohw I thought you made the referencephoto a bit darker....but I see the painting is darker then the blured referencephoto.... so I only blur the referencephoto ?? (Or posterize?)
Why do some pastelists do watercolour underpainting....before pastels?
To let the colour underneath shine through and create depth. Often it the opposite colour on colour wheel.
It gives you an underpainting without losing any of the tooth
Can you use conte sticks to blend the sticks under painting?
Is that wax paper you resting your hand on ?
If you were afraid people would learn too much, you wouldn't be sharing technique, values, composition. I think color choice is important, but pale compared to correct value.
