ah, so glad to see y'all watching vox machina! i think it's so great that y'all are coming at this blind! just to expand on the non-spoilery stuff you do know, this was indeed based on critical role's adventures - a bunch of friends who are also voice actors (the main cast is well-established, so you're sure to have heard all of them before). they were initially just gonna do only one special episode done as a fundraiser, but with a record-breaking kickstarter (they aimed for $750,000, got $11,385,449 instead), they expanded it to a full season. looking for somewhere to show it, it got picked up by amazon prime, where they got the greenlight for a 2nd season! looking forward to your reactions!
Legend of Vox Machina is based on their first campaign. Aside from episode 1 and 2, everything that will happen in the show happened on-stream first so most people are watching it knowing what happens.
I literally just finished campaign 1and am so hype for this series. I've been struggling to get into campaign 2 because I loved vox machina so damn much lol
Even Episode 1 + 2's events are clued in enough in on-stream episodes later on when they go back into the house from Episode 2 (for anyone not up to Ep 2 yet, hope that's spoiler-less enough...)
@@highwayhiker2915 I felt the same way as you when I started watching C1, but C2 is fucking amazing too though!! It doesn't take long before you love all of M9 as much as you did VM

So happy to see you get into this, especially when you say you know nothing about Critical Role or D&D. I started playing D&D in 1978 when I was 10 years old & back then we were picked on & bullied for playing it. We also had the Satanic Panic with religious people like mother freaking out & my Mom burned all my D&D books & comics. Cut to decades later & people like Critical Role have made D&D popular & mainstream. I've been a Critter from the start of Critical Role in March 2015, close to 7 years ago. 3 years ago they had the Kickstarter campaign for 1 animated episode of The Legend of Vox Machina. However, Critters from around the world donated so much within just 24 hours we blew through all the stretch goals & beyond. It led them to add more & more episodes until we had a full season of 12. The Kickstarter campaign broke records & 88,887 backers pledged $11,385,449 in the end. It's so wonderful to see so many talented writers, animators, & voice talent working on this series. Enjoy!
Found your channel recently from The Boys which I have enjoyed, subscribing and in for long haul now thanks to watching Vox Machina. First channel to pop up on my feed with a reaction for the record. :)
If you want to start watching Critical role, they also have a second and third campaign. The third campaign has only recently started so it might be easier to start with that season unless you want to put the time in for the 1st and 2nd campaign. Each episode is about 4 hours. If you start with the first campaign, I would start around episode 23/24. That is the beginning of the briarwood arc and really we’re CR got its stride. FYI, there was another player in campaign 1 (I won’t mention his name because he is not a very good human being) he leaves around the 27 episode mark. It’s better without him in the party anyway.
You seem to know about this world so I hope you dont mind if I have a very, very specific question. I know that rpg worlds are very fleshed out and interesting - so i was wondering what kind of law enforcement exists in that city? That ogre looking guy got his hand chopped off in the bar fight...does that not have some kind of penalty? Im not asking for a huge explanation, but just curious as to what the system is like. Is there some kind of local constabulary? does the ogre thing get to 'press charges'? Is he allowed retribution? or compensation? I know in most fantasy worlds bar brawls are sort of the norm, a good way to introduce characters, but chopping a hand off would surely result in...something? I know the question is specific, just curious if you've got some insight. Thank you in advance!
@@nadeeml9276 In general, it is always dependent on what the Dungeon Master/Party decides or is comfortable with. For Critical role, Matt does create king's guard and local militia but its usually on macro rather than micro; sure they might make sure that a drunken brawl doesn't get too destructive but as far as the legal limits of law within Tal'Dorei (cutting off someone's hand)...that might be little too in depth even for Matt (the man created a calendar for Exandria, with home-brewed months and days of the week). It can also slow down the game or be more role-play than what the players want. But that's not to say that someone creating a DnD game (whether in Tal'Dorei, provided in various guides or even home brewed) can't make up a constabulary force or some sort of law keeping unit. Back to my first sentence, it can kind of be the grey area of how "real" you want to make it. Some DM's will nit pick on rolling for infection in wounds, number of arrows/bullets/etc., even food and bathroom breaks. Having a constabulary is great in a world building sense and can create drama, but something like this can be used to punish the party (from becoming murder-hobos, being disrespectful to fellow players/DM or just trying to meta game) or it can become ball and chain if not handled correctly. If a party only wants to dungeon crawl, kill monsters and have a sort of "rage room" experience, roleplaying an episode of Law and Order: DnD edition will alienate them. It's a give and take between the DM and the party/group of players. Every group is different and want different things out of the game play experience. Any repercussions of the near fight and amputation were probably not included as to not disrupt the pace of the story. The live stream has included the repercussions and various charm/perception/deception roles to try and get out it. I would suggest you watch the live streams, they really are great!
@@eventingirl001 Fantastic fantastic! Thanks for the insight, I have a much better idea now. I might watch their critical role youtube videos if I have some time. After some basic internet searches am I correct to understand that this is actually officially in the D&D universe/world (whatever the term is)? In other words, is it conceivable they'll cross paths with, say, Dark Elves for example? Or is Exandria just super far away? And thanks for answering my noob questions
@@nadeeml9276 No worries! Yes, there are Dark Elves (DND calles them drow). The DND manuals are building blocks to build your own world with the provided races, classes, locations etc or to piggy back off of what Wizards of the Coast (the company that owns Dungeons and Dragons) provides. For example, people can say is they are running a “5E campaign”, it’s just the version of Snd they are playing. There is a “Ravenloft” setting which includes a manual centered around the realm of Ravenloft with setting details, available spells and non-player characters who can be potential enemies. Matt’s home brewed world of Exandria is technically part of the DND cannon/universe. So other groups can set their own games in Exandria; possibly interacting with Vox Machina and other non player characters. Matt has created various classes and subclasses which are featured in these official manuals. Someone could potentially home brew a game where Exandria is in a different plane of existence. So, a DM could have their own group travel to Exandria a la Thor in the Marvel universe. He’s from Asgard but travels to Earth/Midgard.

Hearing you say that you've never had the opportunity to play DnD, I just wanna say (as a random internet person, so obv your mileage may vary) that it's honestly not as difficult to start or run your own game as it might seem.
