It was purely the story of how the show got made: that it was funded by the fans so vastly beyond even CR's most hopeful and wildest dreams (from an 11 minute short special to 10 half-hour episodes purely off the fan donations). When the background of how the animated series came to be, Tennant immediately agreed to the role, recognizing that if the fans of this group had that much passion and faith in them to do this to this extent, he *had* to be a part of that in even the smallest way.

    Always a delight to find a new reactor discovering this show :) Really enjoyed your reaction! I look forward to the next episodes, they start good, and only get better from here.
    I agree, Vox Machina definitely feels like a lot of DnD parties I've known too, sometimes it's fun to lean into the "typical" archetypes. It's worth noting, when the Critical Role cast made these characters for their home game, before they started streaming it, I think it was the first time some of them had played? So these are "first characters" for some of them, and it's much more of a "typical" party than you find in their later campaigns, though I love them all.
    (ALL of the characters live rent free in my head now. 3 different campaigns, 3 completely different groups of ragtag misfits that become found family, all just camping in my head, eating all the food and leaving bear fur on the sofas. It's getting crowded.)
    In the original campaign, Grog has an intelligence of 6. He's a big, murderous puppy and I love him. I think he's *technically* smarter than the bear, but barely. Huge heart though.
    You mentioned Avatar a one point, so it might interest you that Delilah Briarwood is voiced by Grey Griffin, who also voiced Azula. (All of the voices in this show are fantastic, I would suggest checking out the "making of" videos the CR folks put on youtube, but they do have some spoilers, sadly.)
    Brain gremlins don't always need a reason to cause havoc, I know that feeling. Glad Vox Machina was able to shoo them away a little bit, hope you feel in a better headspace soon.

      IIRC, only Matt and Liam had played before Liam's birthday session.

    • @AnxietyRat
      @AnxietyRat 2 года назад +1

      @@IceMetalPunk Nope. The cast members who hadn't played before are Laura, Travis, Sam, and Ashley. Taliesin, Marisha, Liam, and Matt had all played before. The first session Marisha was actually brought to the game but didn't actually play because she was there to help the other people who had absolutely never played before. So she wasn't the most knowledgeable player ever because she had only played it a couple of times, at that point,( she really got into it when she started dating Matt, if I recall correctly) but she knew the basics enough to help people who had NO clue what they were doing.
      Taliesin had been playing for decades just like Matt. He was a very very experienced player who had actually played with Matt a couple of times. Which is also why he was invited to the first games because they needed someone who knew the ropes very very well in the group to help others. They've mentioned some of their previous adventures on Talks Machina and stuff. It's also why he pretty much exclusively plays homebrewed classes ( minus Caduesus) Because he's played all of the other classes multiple times and they're kind of boring to him now so he really only likes to play stuff that he's NEVER played before and so Matt homebrews classes for him.
      And Liam played a couple of times in high school. So he was very rusty but kind of knew more than some of the others who that never played before.
      A lot of the mistakes that happened in C1 due to game gameplay mechanics. A LOT of it was because they were switching from Pathfinder to 5e dnd. So a lot of the spell names were pretty much the same but would very different effects. Which caused a lot of confusion in the first few months of C1. To be fair, they STILL fuck up their spells, sometimes. But it was VERY bad in the early days dude that switch in TTRPG systems.
      Most of this info about the past D&D experience is from their between the sheets interviews, I'm pretty sure. It's been a couple of years since I watched those Between the Sheets interviews but I'm pretty sure that's where they talk about when they got into D&D.

    Cronus, from Clash of the Titans, is voiced by David Kaye, who worked on several DC animation projects with Travis and Laura, the voices of Grog and Vax, and on Ducktales,... which is directed (the voice cast) by Sam, the voice of Scanlan... incidentally, that's the job that put them in contact with David Tennant in the first place.
    The cast of this show, both the main cast and the (stellar) guests stars, are a real who's who of voiceover both in animation and videogames... they have pretty much worked with everybody.

    Officially in D&D, only metallic dragons can shapeshift. But Matt Mercer just homebrewed that ability onto a chromatic dragon because it's more fun when the deadly dragon can be anyone 😁 Speaking of D&D mechanics, the reason Keyleth froze up is because all dragons of adult age or older have a Frightful Presence ability that requires a wisdom save to avoid being frightened... Sam Reigel, Scanlan, grew up performing in theater and sang a capella. He was also major skirt chaser.

      To be fair, people have said the same thing about the way Travis is voicing grog's voice. I think it's because of the absolutely dog shit microphones they had in C1. I think they're voicing the characters pretty much the way they would have voiced them in the campaign a lot of them rewatched the campaign to study the story of what had happened and I assume to get reacquainted with the voice of their characters a bit. So I think they're doing it correctly but it isn't the exact same because the microphones were very shit back then. So both of their voices kind of sound different.
