    That was a profound anecdote, Mato. It hits close to home for me because just a couple years later in 1914 my grandfather decided to quit smoking, he was 9 months old. Also later that year, on his first birthday, he was drafted into the war. He fought nobly; tooth and cradle.
    Thank you Mato for making me remember the courage of my infant grandfather, you are truly a legend.

    Yet another great Alekhine game. Thanks Mato, I like and understand chess a whole lot more because of your commentaries.

    Alekhine was only 19 years old, born in November 1892. When at his best, Alekhine combined the tactical brilliance of Blackburne with the sound opening play of Lasker. Alekhine loved combinations but when he reached his peak in the late 1920s and early 1930s he was also a superior strategist with a knowledge of opening theory.

    Potemkin should be spelled Potyomkin in order to pronounce his name correctly. Alekhine's full name is Alexander Alexandrovich Alekhine, with his family name written in a French manner once he got his French citizenship in 1927.

    • @sircurtisseretse1331
      @sircurtisseretse1331 7 лет назад +1

      You're right about Potyomkin. Most people here in UK pronounce Alekhine, Ale-kine. Alekhine pronounced it Alyekhin. Every other Russian pronounces it Alyokhin.

    Can someone educate me?
    Why did the king not retreat to the first rank at 3:11 ?

    • @1001themaster
      @1001themaster 8 лет назад

      +Mike Marsh I am a very very unskilled player, I rarely calculate more than a move or two ahead, and so forth
      but i dont think I would have moved the king to the third rank despite trapping the rook because it seems like an inherently unsafe place to be
      I am not claiming that I would have identified the checkmate threats, but i think I would have avoided such moves with the king by habit or instinct

    • @1001themaster
      @1001themaster 8 лет назад

      i get your point, it will end with an eventual advantage for the attacking side
      tho obviously in this case, that didnt work out particularly well
      if i was playing against alekhine i would be more concerned with defense tho lol
