cannot wait to rewatch this 3x this week after i see it for the second time with my brother this wednesday. our italian household is in shambles drinking coppola sauvignon blanc
Back in ‘83 I attended a double-bill of Coppola’s The Outsiders and Rumble Fish. I was a teenager. The Conversation and Apocalypse Now were next for me.
46:08 - the ring that julia has when she stalks cesar was a voice recorder, it lit up when she spoke into it to record what he was doing, buying flowers was something she said into it
Why would you assume Azrael was a bomb? It was an IFC released and was probably made for a few million dollars at most. It made a quarter mil which is fine for a movie with that budget. Also, the fact that you enjoyed a pretty generic, forgettable film like Azrael over an ambitious, formally interesting project like Megalopolis speak volumes.
@@clstuff1 Neither of them mentioned Fellini as a reference, who I felt was an obvious influence. I enjoyed the film for the most part and even if you hate it I think you'll be entertained by decadence, spectacle of it nonetheless. I do think It would have been more accessible to those with no familiarity of Ancient Roman history, Shakespeare or Italian surrealist filmmaking as a 8-12 episode miniseries to fully realize story/character arcs.
Considering the dreamy aspect of certain (especially recent) Coppola films, I wonder if he’s ever conversed with David Lynch. _Megalopolis_ is sublime.
The best comparison might be Chinese Democracy. You have to reckon with decades of over-thinking and recording and re-recording every line, such that when Axl chooses the Drunk Elton John line reading, you've got to sit with that they sorted through 1000s of hours of DAT and said, YES!! Drunk Elton!!
Funny that Sean names Phantom Menace as having so much digital photography when that was actually the prequel that still had quite a lot of practical effects and miniatures and was shot on film.
i liked a lot of things about Megalopolis and love he took a big swing to push the medium, and i think it will be appreciated in the future. that said, obvs things didn't work and it is very flawed. agree w Sean's take about Aubrey and Shia being in the right movie.
I wish Francis just watched Southland Tales and learned from Richard Kelly's attempt to do something very similar nearly 20 years ago. And I still love Southland Tales. I wanted to like Megalopolis. But beautiful as it looks and funny as it can be at times, it's a tough watch.
@@rigsby1454 Yep, no doubt. I've never seen The Conversation. Apocalypse Now, I've watched a few times, very distinct movie, I'd almost call it experimental film making. And of course GF 1 and 2, always in my ever changing top tier of movies.
It was an enjoyable mess of a film. And yes, there is a far longer cut out there that makes it a lot better. I’ll take Megalopolis over soulless comic book adaptations, any day of the week.
So funny all their criticism for this film dialogue especially immersion could be similarly applied to trap a movie they liked and for sean to call this a failed experiment while saying she is conan is fearlessly weird and also liking body double tells me these folks are just finally getting old megalopolis is good time will prove that
Surely you can see the irony in not understanding a movie commenting on modern society and also being totally OK with people ruining the moviegoing experience for other by pulling out your phone in the middle of a screening.
Haha... I agree. While I love The Big Picture, these two can be really New England WASPy at times and bring all the privilege and ignorance associated with it to the podcast. This is why I feel CR is a must for this podcast since he brings the much needed edge to the conversation, something that is desperately needed to review an audacious yet middling movie like this to really bring out its true flavor.
I couldn't help but feel a bit of Mike Judge's Idiocracy especially during the first hour of Megalopolis. Maybe just as I was still getting acclimated to it's tone or mode of expression. If Beavis and Butthead had stumbled into a scene it wouldn't have phased me one bit.
Thanks to Sean for blocking me on letterboxd!!( I left a comment questioning his one word review and not leaving any stars on MEGALOPOLIS) Also, The conversation was inspired by Antonioni's blow-up, and the Rain People should be in Coppola's "HOF" many critics consider it an early new Hollywood classic

To show how much happened In Megalopolis : When you guys mentioned an abortion scene, I can’t even recall it happening lol

I love the way Sean looks to Bobby after his (frankly wonderful) Keaton impersonation, as if he's worrying that he blew out the mic.
