He does look genuinely SO happy to still be doing his job! You should be so proud of not only everything you've accomplished in terms of ribbons with him, but debatably MORE proud to still have him competing at this level at the age of 20! Like a fine wine :)

I only ever had Arabians in a smallish situation, but I know what it takes to keep an older horse happy and healthy and interested, and you have got it going on! You guys have so much fun! What a gift you have and are giving. ❤️My oldest passed on at 37, and even with her toothlessness and the hard work it took to keep her healthy, I gave thanks and could see her funny, young spirited self.

Ashley, I don't know how tall you are, but when you stand close to the XC fences, they look daunting in size! Then you ride the course and make them appear inconsequential. Congratulations to you and Zeb!

Zebedee knows more than most human beings. It is absolutely gratifying to see how he attacks his job.
Although it was hot, I think that the scoring in the dressage was a little low for what he did. I miss the days when an eventer’s dressage score was not weighted as heavily as it is now, but that’s the way the modern sport is.
If it were up to me, I would reward the older road warriors like Zeb and change it back to having less of a determinative outcome. Nowadays, if you get a top dressage score, you can get away with making too many jumping mistakes. Eventing should be focused on jumping.
That is my humble opinion. But I am so glad you got this wonderful outing with your heart horse. He is indeed a legend.
I think both of you so much for taking us along on this ride. Very very enjoyable.

Ashley WOW, this Vlog was a joy to watch. First congratulations on your result, personally I think your dressage was harshly scored but that's just my opinion, with the excellent clear round in showjumping and the smashing of the XC, you and Zeb deserved high placing imo. The commentator summed it up very well, Zeb looked fab for a 20 yr old, he just does not look it, at all, loves his job, and excelled, as the commentator said down to management, and Zeb is so well look after, you get the reward of that. I was so touched by your mum, and yes I too shed a tear when you were clear in the show jumping. A fantastic epic few days for you and the main man, absolutely loved sharing your days out. You and Zeb are a powerful combination, and it is lovely to watch. xxxx

I thought your dressage score was a joke, he was clearly relaxed & on aids & I'll be loving to see how those judges are doing with their "forward propulsion" in hot weather when they are 60 years old! Zeb was amazing for a young horse, let alone a senior AND a senior thoroughbred! You get a LOT of the credit for that, you are so careful about your horses, diligent w/ everything that has to do with their health & well-being (I'm sure Zeb disagrees: "If you REALLY cared about me we'd do XC 3 times & bag the dressage & show ring!"). As a result, you get this amazing, experienced, healthy boy tearing up the FEI courses at the age of 20. You should be very proud of him, of yourself, & your supportive family!

Absolutely amazing you two. My thoroughbred, Fable, just turned 20 this year. It’s funny because I was never a fan of thoroughbreds. My first, Arnold, was a near death rescue. I was the Vet Tech who was working when we got the call.
He was a 1 on the health scale, he was literally skin and bones. His feet had huge chunks of hoof missing. His entire top line was a giant scab of rain rot. He had no shelter and was all alone in an isolated field with no one to check on him while his owner spent the winter in Florida with his other horses, playing polo.
It was a fluke that a neighboring farm happened to move their horses into a field where they saw Arnold. We had a rare moose sighting in the area. When they saw this huge animal in the distance, they couldn’t quite tell what it was, but he looked more like a moose than a horse. They called the authorities and we went out to evaluate the situation.
In all of the years I was a Veterinary Technician, I have never seen such a starved animal. I approached him sideways not to frighten him then just gently began to touch him. He was so tense, you could practically see sparks flying off of him.
After I got the halter and lead on him, I started to massage him. I started at his poll and worked down both sides of his neck. Halfway down he let out a huge sigh and relaxed.
I brought him up to the gate and we did the evaluation. My boss felt it best to euthanize him, but one look at my face and he knew I was determined to save him. I agreed we’d go week to week and if he hadn’t improved, we’d euthanize him.
I had a lot of negative experiences with thoroughbreds in our practice. All of my friends had them and I found them too temperamental for me. I’d stick to my quiet and steady Appys, paints and quarter horses… until Arnold came into my life.
He was over 16 hands and a solid chestnut. When his coat came back in, he shined like a new penny. I had to have our farrier build him composite hoof, pads to protect his 28:01 soles, shoes and give him on hoof supplement. He got shod every 4 weeks and when all of the composite finally grew out, I could go to 6 weeks.
After researching he past, it turned out he had been severely physically abused as well as nearly starved to death. He was terrified of men, but as long as I was present , he was fine. Even the Vet I worked with, wasn’t able to go near him, unless I was there too. It took a year before he could be handled without me being present.
He became a fabulous horse. He would try anything I asked him to do. He wasn’t a jumper, but he enjoyed dressage. He loved trail riding except when a pheasant or rabbit jumped out of the hay fields we rode around. We were partners for 17 years. He gave me a totally different view of thoroughbreds.
I rescued my current thoroughbred, Fable, as a 3 year old. There was another one with him who reminds me of Zeb. He was 16.3 and also jet black.
Fable was in the same pen and he was so cute and friendly, I took both of them. They were both headed for slaughter, but someone gave their trainer my name and he contacted me.
Now I’ve had 3 thoroughbreds and I regret that I gave them so little notice. I really love riding big horses. Their gaits are so big and comfortable. Fable was only a 3 year old and 15 hands. I expected him to grow a little more, but he didn’t grow any taller. Of course, I’m almost 70 so not needing a mounting block is an advantage.
If I was younger, I’d still be doing hunter paces and cross country, but I’m very happy to live vicariously through you and Zeb. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. Please give your beautiful, big boy some carrots for me. ❤

    • @fleetskipper1810
      @fleetskipper1810 Год назад +1

Your story touches my heart in a personal way.
I also got a thoroughbred in need of rescuing, although he was not as in as bad shape as Arnold. But he was scared and flighty and not trusting. I ended up having him for 12 years until he broke his pastern bone, and a pasture accident, and had to be put down. It was the saddest day of my life.
In the end, he would take either canter lead from a dead stop on a completely loose rein. He was so seat-trained. And he was always friendly and in my pocket, just like a dog or cat would be.
People, if you find a thoroughbred that needs love, they will return it to you and do their best for you. Don’t be scared off by the fact that thoroughbreds are reputed to be are “crazy.” The vast, vast majority of them are not.
I would give my life savings to have just one extra hour with him, right now.

    • @patriciaflood8874
      @patriciaflood8874 Год назад

@@fleetskipper1810 it was so nice to hear about your horse. I’ve had them in my life since a neighbor passed their outgrown pony to me when their daughter (Mary) got a beautiful paint mare. Rebel, my (large) pony, was the center of my life and because he was almost 14 hands, I didn’t outgrow him. Today, people would have thought he was a Gypsy Vanner. Back then, however, people teased me about my bay, tobiano pinto being a miniature Clydesdale. I was up against thoroughbreds in the jumping classes and Rebel flew over fences. We usually jumped clear rounds and in the top 3 in most classes. He loved jumping so much that he’d go over our jumps in the pasture. When Mary went to college, she asked me ride Flicka. When I did, Rebel did NOT like being left behind. He’d jump the out over the huge rock wall around our pasture and run after me. I ended up ponying afterwards. He didn’t like being retired at 30 years old!
My first rescue was my first horse. He was a dappled gray and almost as bad as Arnold. He was being ridden at this horrible hack barn. All of the horses were in bad shape. This guy just paid the fines every month rather than feed his horses. The owner told us to take him for a month. If he survived, we’d pay him. If he died, he’d come carted him away for free.
We changed his name from Danny to Mission. Caring for him was why I became a Vet Tech. It took a long time to get his weight up, but he was Pegasus under all of the dirt. He LOVED to jump! I can’t remember a single time he refused to! When my 4-H club would ride to a big estate that belonged to one of the Governors of our state, he would allow us to use his cross country course. The only thing he asked was that we dressed neatly and didn’t ride in jeans. We didn’t have to wear all of our show clothes, but helmets and britches were a plus… no jeans or inappropriate shoes.
All of my horses were rescues after Mission were from at best neglect and at worst was Arnold. I didn’t make a lot of money in our practice, but we were the best paid Vet Techs in the area. On top of that, we had free Vet care which was a HUGE benefit. I’d always tell myself that this horse would go to a home after they were healthy, but after all of that work, I couldn’t part with any. I don’t want my animals to outlive me, so Fable will be my last horse.
He’s truly a great boy. He has a personality more like my quarter horses, paints and Appys. He’s so small compared to my other horses. This really makes me laugh because his papers show he has a lot of famous thoroughbreds in his bloodline. How did this little horse come out of that ancestry?
Horses are my physical and mental therapy. I can’t imagine life without them. I understand your pain completely. Arnold was my heart horse. I’ve loved all of mine, but bringing him into my life was worth every penny. Now I’m retired and have to watch my pennies. Plus, my health is declining. I don’t want any of my animals to be neglected because I can’t care for them. If you’re ever in NY, you’re welcome to come and get a horse fix with Fable. 😊
      I

@@patriciaflood8874 Thank you for your kind comment! Like you, I am older now, 70 to be exact, and would not want any of my animals to outlive me. I could tell books’ worth of stories about my thoroughbred. His Jockey Club name was Satin Swan. He raced in claiming races for four years before I got him. His paternal grandsire was Northern Dancer, and I was warned many times that Northern Dancer-bred TBs did not have a good temperament. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but it certainly did not apply to him.
I trusted him to rear my young daughter and give her good values, and he did just that. She learned selflessness, bravery, and that when you commit to an animal, you take care of them every day, no matter what the weather is like or how you feel. She’s grown into adult that I am proud of who I also like. I give Satin all the credit for that.

Just WOW! Okay we know Zeb does not like dressage even a little but he did well indeed. The show jumping was grand, he is so efficient over the fences he is a lot faster than you'd think, just flows along. Cross country they really were impressed at how much Zeb clearly was having a grand time out there and yes he did look like "Go round again? Can we? Please?" despite the heat. See ya next vlog....

I never comment but I always watch! Thank you for always giving us these vlogs - I watch every single one and seeing Zeb still so active and fit at 20 is awesome!

I forgot to comment so I'm doing it now! Absolutely brilliant boy, he just loves his jumping and is so genuine. He looked stunning and at age 20 he is a credit to you, he is a testament to how well you look after your horses, in no way physically or mentally does he look like a 20 year old! ❤❤

Congratulations on doing so wonderful in this event. His running so well in this event is a testament on how well you pay attention to his health and welfare. Well done. BTW I feel you were robbed on your dressage score...he deserved a better score. :)
