The 73-year-old singer also talks about the inspiration of his latest album, “This Is My Town: Songs of New York.” Manilow reveals he didn’t expect ‘Copacabana’ to be a hit, but he still enjoys performing it.

He is my ultimate favorite artist since the 90’s, I was actually late to get to know his songs but he became my favorite eversince and his music really tags my heart everytime I listen to his songs. I grew up with Barry starting in 1973, it's been a wonderful ride of Beautiful Music. I knew of Barry's sexual orientation many years ago and it never swayed me for a second from loving this great man and his in incredible music. Love you forever Barry. 💓

I started listening to Barry when I was still in school. I don’t remember how old I was. But I know it was in my teens. My favorite album that he did was the greatest songs of the 60s. I still have that album. Barry is awesome! Ya gotta Love him.

I was only 21 or 22 when I saw you perform at South Shore Tahoe at Harvey’s I believe. It was all my office staff lol! I was the youngest. You put on a magnificent show, I’ve never forgotten. You are quite the intertwined. Amazing, I’m 67 now. Thank You!!❤️the show.

One of the greats - been listening since I heard "Beautiful Music" all those years ago from the third album ("Tryin' To Get The Feeling," 1975). 42 years later, at the ripe old age of 48, I still think his music is some of the greatest in the "Great" American songbook. I love Barry Manilow, and I have loved him for over 50 years. He is great but I was shocked on his face. It looks to have had far too much surgery that his lower part and mouth is a restricted.. but as long as he still sings as good. His music brings back so many good and sad memories.. he feels the words and music in his voice. Love it!

This comes so full circle for me. With this interview of Barry Manilow. On the NBC-TV Today Show.
I love Barry Manilow. I always have. My girlfriend and I enjoyed him back in the early 1970s. And I was a young, FM Rock DJ, in Baltimore. That also worked at the largest recording studio in Baltimore. From the time I was 17. So it was recording studios and radio stations, for me in my career. When something cool happened.
I was offered a job at a big hit recording studio in New York City. Media Sound Recording Studios. I was hired on as a Maintenance Engineer. Even though I wanted to be a Music Engineer. When one day in the shop. A phone call comes in.
And so I was told. One of our Assistant Engineers did not show up for a recording session. And it was my job to go take care of that recording session. As a stand-in, Music Engineer. Sure.
So the producer tells me I will be recording, Lenny Castro. Doing Latin percussion overdub tracks. Sure. That should be fun. And I set up a couple of microphones. And Lenny starts playing. And the producer asks me if I can change that sound any? I said sure. I go out into the studio. And I change up my microphone selection. And the producer likes that sound.
So we are adding Latin percussion to an already recorded rhythm track of, Bass, Drums, guitars, keyboards. But no vocals on the tracks yet. Just instrumental music. And it's obvious. This Latin percussion track, is going to play a prominent part in this song. And was a lot of fun to record.
Three hours into that overdub session. The actual assistant engineer, finally shows up. And I go back to the Maintenance Shop.
Jump down about a year and 1/2, later. I have left that job and taken a new position. With a major Advertising Agency. When I went to a nightclub. In Hollywood, Florida. Which is halfway between where I lived in Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
This was a great nightclub/dance club. And the place was called the Copacabana Nightclub in Hollywood, Florida. When this disco DJ who is mixing records and doing a fabulous job. Starts another record. And it sounds very familiar to me. Though I can't really place it? When the lyrics kick in.
Oh my God! This is that song I recorded! And who is it? It's Barry Manilow! And the song is called, Copacabana! And I'm listening to it at the Copacabana Nightclub in Hollywood, Florida. Oh my God! This is my song I recorded it! I never knew it was Barry Manilow. He wasn't in the control room. It was just me and the producer and Lenny Castro. And yes! The Latin percussion and the song Copacabana. Actually gets a solo midway in the song.. It's all about that Latin percussion. And I recorded that!
Though because I was not the regularly scheduled engineer. I get no credit. I get no royalties. But I recorded that Latin percussion track for, Copacabana with Barry Manilow. And I later went to work for NBC-TV! For the next 20 years..
And so to see my NBC colleagues whom I've also worked with. And Barry Manilow. Whose Copacabana song is one of his famous ones. I recorded. It's so full circle! I engineered for Barry Manilow. I engineered for NBC-TV! But I've never met Barry, personally. I mean I have. At the studio. Saying hi as we were walking down the hallways. He was just another client. That he recorded most of his famous jingles there as well as his hit songs.
And so Barry Manilow is known just as much for his hit songs. As he is known for his famous commercial jingles. Some of the most memorable. I'd like to buy the world a Coke and others. This guy has enlightened our lives for the past 50+ years. And he's a delight. A true Pro. And I can hardly believe. I was involved with some of this. All due to somebody not showing up for their scheduled session. And that's how this Magic Happens. It's a Miracle. When hit songs are created. And go into the Lexicon of our history. So cool! And I helped!
Unfortunately unlike Barry. I am now flat broke. In my retirement years. It wasn't supposed to go like this. Where I was to lose everything I ever held dear. It's just not right. And yet.. I am pleased by what I accomplished in my career. I did some great things throughout the decades. I had a full circle career. Not many people do..
And so in many ways. I was one of the lucky ones who succeeded. Though not as well off financially as I thought I would be. Not at all. I'm a pauper now. And it wasn't supposed to be that way. There is a lot of nasty people out there. People to destroy your life. For no other reasons than being of the LGBTQ, community. Just like Barry. But not like Barry. I'm a very private person. I don't seek a lot of attention. Unlike youngsters of today. That require constant drama. And online recognition. I never needed.
So just recording music is a marvelous thing. Something we all need for our human existence. Something I was lucky enough to do for the past 50+ years. Just without a hit record of my own. Of a pop music hit. Though I have them in the Gospel and Operatic fields. You don't get famous with those as an engineer. You just have to be better than the others. And I am. I was all about engineering perfection. It's the only way to go.
I had a great time in my career. 50+ years of fun and career gratification. Yeah baby!

I'ma huge music fan and love to read about the stories " behind the music " so to speak. I read if I recall correctly that Barry stated out as a writer of songs and had to be pushed into singing! What a story! I have to look up more on his biography.

Been a Manilow fan since I first saw an HBO concert special he did in the late 70s from the Pantages Theatre in LA. I was able to find a VHS copy of that show a few years ago. Great music and a great entertainer. At 73 years old now, he's looking more like Liberace with the face lift and all. Why can't show folks just grow old gracefully and still perform?

It was important for him to do this and long over due. I used to criticize such announcements when it was painfully obvious for decades, but it does matter. If we were all treated equally in this country it wouldn't, but we aren't. Richard Simmons, former rep. Aaron Schock, and many others: we're waiting. Copa is my least favorite song and i like it ok. I can't help but dance to it in concert but i like so many more of his songs better. I write the Songs (even tho he didn't write that) i am your child. All the time, even now, wkend in new england. Loved him sjnce i was 14 and Mandy was on the radio. Thank you Barry!!
