- Today we do a review and tasting of Auchentoshan 12 Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
If you are interested in making a whiskey donation, head over to austinwhiskyva...
Rex, I had Auchentoshan at a whiskey festival, and by the time I had turned around, had no memory of it. We went there because of the name, but didn't jump onboard with the palate, unfortunately.
And as for the engagement, I have consumed A LOT of youtube content, but this is the only channel where the producers engage back with the viewers at any kind of significant rate. We actually have conversations with you guys, and that makes for a more loyal and engaged audience. Obviously, that will become harder and harder as the channel grows, but for now, it's awesome.
Yeah, I'm digging this crazy tribe.
The reason I have been watching since the beginning,is your sincerity. And your love of whiskey. The honesty is quite refreshing.
The fastest growing whisky review RUclips channel involving an eagle/wolf hybrid and a hobbit standing in front of a wall of whisky worth roughly the amount of a small house. It's a very specific niche but you guys are killing it.
Kevin Pasley Daniel is clearly a Dwarf. never seen a Hobbit with a beard like that lol
The GreyJedi2112 possibly... we have to see his feet o know for sure though..
Yeah, we like to specialize.
I can relate to the massive expenditure of funds on Whisky since finding this awesome channel! Fortunately for me, even though she's not a fan of alcohol, my wife is wonderfully supportive of my indulgences! Thanks Daniel and Rex!
wait wait wait . . . . .. this IS meant to be serious reference material?
I think I like the sound of your "school" more and more!
What are you talking about? We're extremely serious. (turns to self... *yes. yes we are*)
So this scotch is like my first and I decided to watch this while drinking this and now I have decided to watch every video while drinking the same whiskey lol
Expensive !!
Dude! Congrats on growing so much, so quickly!
I'd just like to say,
"You're welcome"
Hi guys, I'm typing this comment all the way from Namibia in southern Africa. Our whiskey choices are limited, as you can imagine. I recently found a bottle of Auchentoshan and immediately searched for your review. Looking forward to enjoying it. Thanks for the great content.
My humble submission for a parting toast - I've drunk to your health together, I've drunk to your health alone, I've drunk to your health so many times, I've damned near ruined my own. - Admiral Bull Halsey WWII. On a side not that toast was given by my uncle at both my parents and my weddings. Keep up the great work guys!
This is awesome.
You guys make the channel! People come for the whiskey but stay for the company.
On to the question, would it be advisable to let the drink sit for a few minutes after pouring? I find that I can pick out more on the nose once the initial alcohol vapours dissapate.
What you noticed is definitely a thing! And yes, agitation will evaporate alcohol first which just hangs out in the glass. So absolutely! My vote is try both.
This channel will be the death of my paychecks as well. At the moment I have managed to get my fix by having whisky at a bar wherever I see one you gave a review on that sounds like I would enjoy. However the $750 shopping card on an online whisky store warns of future vault growth.
Sadly being in New Zealand a lot of the whisky you guys buy as low end bottles are upper priced bottles here. e.g Monkey Shoulder is $80 a bottle in stores or $55 plus shipping online (I know Rex, this pains me too)
The average Neat whisky at a bar is around $15 a glass, and you dont even get a Glencairn!
Blasphemy!
As to your engagement rate, id say we engage more because you guys engage back. How can we now comment and such when we get a reply and see others getting them too. Just makes the community so much better!
Keep up the great work guys.
May misfortune follow you the rest of your life, but never catch up.
yeah, I have several friends in Australia and New Zealand who complain of the same thing. For the amount of money you could save, it may be time to take a plane trip, and ship stuff back. :-)
Whiskey Vault Haha yeah if only. Sadly you get stung with the import duty that takes it right back up. Might have to take a trip to see you guys instead.
As a side note have you guys reviewed any New Zealand whisky? And if not you should. Would love to see what you think of local goodness. Plus then I know if it's qor5h buying it too 😉
not yet! I'll have to find some.
I love this whisky..I first had it for 15 buck a glass as well.. I love it and love the after taste!
"we didn't really think this was going to go anywhere" = my favorite thing from the interwebs this week.
Working my way through the videos in order. The last time you mentioned subscriber count, (I'm on video #147) I think it was somewhere around 6k subscribed. When I joined the channel, you were just passing 20k, and, at the moment, you've got 37k. I would just like to say, you're welcome for those 17k subscribers. I will HUMBLY accept the credit for the channel's explosive growth ... as well as a willing and gracious gift of your peatiest whiskey--from Daniel care of Rex, obviously.
Rewatching some old videos of things I'd lol buy. You guys are awesome! Just having fun! It's organic and completely true! That's why everyone likes you guys!
Five year old comment on a six year old video, comment says the video is "old".
At this point the person who wrote the comment is probably dead.
I'm with Lord Garth. I just don't want to add up what I've spent on whiskeys since I started watching your channel. No regrets.
Keep it up, you glorious bastards!
Definitely don't do it. There's no upside to that tally. Just drink it all.
Congrats on growth. Rex do you have notes on which things actually worked and which didn't for your experiment?
I cannot believe I still have over 150 more episodes to go. Keep up the great work.
This is the first time I have EVER commented on a RUclips video.... I just want to say thanks for what y'all do. I have learned a great deal from each video. I went from drinking 10yr glenmoragie, dewars, johnnie walker ect. (And thinking I KNEW scotch) To More complex, wonderful scotches like bruichladdich, lagavulin, and laphroaig. (That blew my damn mind). Keep the vids coming...... thanks
First comment ever?! We're honored, Blake. Thanks for the support 👍 (Nice selection by the way.)
This is awesome. Drawing viewers out of the woodwork. Makes me proud.
Thanks to this channel I discovered Laphroaig and now its my favourite whisky! Cheers.
It is amazing you've grown so much considering only 25% of each video talks about the actual whiskey you're drinking. Haha You two have great chemistry tho and being kind of polar opposites from each other makes it very entertaining. Daniel responding to damn near every comment and Rex reading comments every episode really drives our participation. At least for me, it makes me feel I'm contributing to the content and success of the channel. Pretty cool bc not a lot of channels are like that.
Also, having a Vault of 600 whiskies you can shoot in front of doesn't hurt. :)
Yeah, I'm going to say we never expected anything like this when we realized we weren't actually reviewing whisky :-) But it's a damn fun tribe that's gathered.
Hells yes! Me too, brother! Love it!
Ive had the pleasure of drinking this. I thought it was lovely. Keep up the good work! I also recently have been heavy into the laphroaig. Love the peat
Very good. And glad you dig Laphroaig!
Last week was my birthday and I was gifted a bottle. Of course I tried it right away and I have to agree with you. It is very light and totally an easy whisky to drink. And I really enjoy it. Especially for the price it is an awesome and easy to enjoy whisky.
happy birthday!
Daniel I"m wondering if you can tell me why, when nosing a whiskey, if you let it sit in the glass for 10 15 minutes It often comes across more floral. I guess that it has to do with the evaporation of alcohol, but i am curious to know what is going on. Is it the oils that remain once the liquid is gone?
Yeah, the alcohol leaves first which removes most of the flavor components with it. Leave it for an hour, it will taste like shitty water.
Dad jokes are pretty good. However, I prefer camo jokes cus you never see them coming.
YES
The Auchentoshen 12 years old is the only version I've bought... never the triple wood. I really like it.
Try the Triple Wood!
Out of all of the inexpensive single malts - Auchentoshan is my personal favorite. Not necessarily for taste, but for how it makes me feel. It's a different sort of buzz compared to a blended scotch. I'd definitely take it over Singleton, Glenfiddich, Tamnavulin, Glenmorangie. If I'm feeling like a cheapskate - I'd get the basic American Oak, if I'm feeling classy - I'd go for the 12 YO version.
Engage!! It's cool that you guys involve us. The Whisk(e)y Vault was the first channel that I ever subscribed to. I brush my teeth to this shit.
mmmmmm. whisky teeth....
Thomas Graves, we'll add whiskey flavored toothpaste to the merch list - just for you.
True story. I go to the dentist for my regular cleaning, and they ask me what flavor abrasive I want to have for the buffing. I always answer "scotch" but they just laugh. Haven't figured out the joke, yet.
I showed up, after the modern rogue sent me over. You two are hilarious to watch. Always wish that my local liquor store carried more things so i could try some of the whiskeys you show in your videos
Thanks for the kind words! Modern Rogue is freaking awesome.
Keep up the good work guys! love to watch you every day while am having lunch. It's so funny to see you Daniel trying to get serious after singing "and the flowers and the trees..called loove - Vainilla butter and toast" hahahaha so great ! my top 10 moments !
Yeah, that was a bit of a brutal transition. But I think we pulled it off. :-)
Hey I have 2 questions and 1 Dad joke.
1. How much whiskey per day should one consume and not become an alcoholic. From what I know a dram of whiskey per day, is not bad for health.
2. Which whiskey (Scottish / Irish / Bourbon), should a first timer try, to fall in love with it? My friends usually prefer wine or beer over whiskey, but I fell in love with Whiskey the moment I had my first sip of Laphroaig in a bar. I ended up trying Jura, Cardhu, Jim Beam, and Jameson the same night. But my friends still have reservations for this spirit.
Dad Joke (Worth one dram of Blue Label):
I am on a whiskey diet, I've lost 4 days already. :)
1. I'm not a doctor but 1 or 2 a night of a reasonable 1.5oz pour is probably fine.
2. maybe start your friends on Irish whisky.
love the diet :-)
This is the first time I've watched this with Auchentoshan in my hand.
Buttered Toast!
Magnificent
Bastards
Agreed! Love this channel for too many reasons! Keep them coming. :)
I'm getting a lot of inspiration from your channel to start getting to know some whiskys, so thanks for the great content. I aslo want to know whether you guys, Daniel and Rex, have tried Finnish whisky like for example Valamo 5yo or Teerenpeli KASKI?
We haven't been able to track down the Finnish whisky yet. Someday!
If it's triple distilled, doesn't that remove a lot of flavor from the mash, during purification? Thanks for another great episode 😎🥃
Yeah, in theory it does remove even more of the heavier flavor components. Very Irish of them.
Auchentoshan was my very FIRST Scotch and it will always hold a special place in my heart and in my blood stream. :)
Yeah guys do ailsa bay soon. I've heard that's a new one. I've now gotten into bourbon and rye. I had Hudson baby bourbon/Manhattan rye from them as well. Better than last time I had bourbon. I'm now a convert. Great to hear that you're the fastest growing whisky reviewers on RUclips.
We did! It's freaking awesome. It's episode 69.
Whiskey Vault ah great ok. Thanks. I'll take a look. Cheers.
How come there are so few Lowland Distilleries? I've always been a fan of Glenkinchie and Auchentoshan, especially the Three Wood. I'd love for more to pop up bc they might just produce something amazing!
You actually did a video on Ailsa Bay already and I've been on the hunt since watching it. It's one of my unicorns at the moment.
Honestly, it dates back into history. The majority of the distilleries were all Highland based. And the Lowlands were mostly merchants and blenders.
That spread has basically never changed.
Interesting!!
I really like this scotch too. In fact, it's the first scotch I've ever had. Many a whiskys ago. Btw. I LOVE that wall behind you!
It's a beautiful, beautiful wall.
Auchentoshan will always have a place on my shelf. First Scotch, and still one of my favorites. I can't say the same for the first bourbon I had.
Fantastic, I have been a fan of whisky for a long time, never knew there was so much in whisk(e)y. I have seen some really cool glasses on Amazon and I watched.... 104 episodes in the last 2 weeks. I seen the one where you reviewed glasses. When can we get a Daniel and Mooch signature Glencairen complete with Aadison Avenue metal band, etched logo and chilling stones. Now I would buy that for a dollar! Or more Rex.
Tree fiddy!
Also, we have a long list of fun merch ideas... And access to a laser etching thingy. Just sayin'.
Love it.
I just bought a bottle today. Pretty much enjoying it!!
What's the name of the new whiskey from Scotland? Would love to look it up...:)
The new lowland? Ailsa Bay?
Cycling (thankfully already have the bike but my road shoes need replaced, my wife and want Retul fittings, she needs a power meter and we both want wheel upgradeS) and Japanese knives (got 3 this summer a sujihiki, a nakiri and a petty and I'm drooling over 2 more at the local shop... ugh) was bad enough for the wallet. And now you guys? Well... at least I can prep healthy food and ride off the whisky. I tried to call a "friendly" pour of Glenrothes sherry cask a "recovery drink" after a hard ride last week :p
Next time I head to Total Wine I may work up the courage to venture beyond Speysides. Funny thing is I love my dark chocolate and black coffee but have been turned off by heavier smoke in the past. May give it another try now.
re: whiskey donations, are we allowed to ship alcohol across state lines?
Not technically.....
have a bottle for you to try if you can get one, its Wayne Gretzky red cask whisky.. its finished in red cask wine barrels from his winery estate, very smooth.
Still trying to get a bottle!
Would you recommend this for a beginner?
It's a bit complicated. But it could work!
i must hear this ultimate dad joke. sneak it in while Rex is fetching his mooch necklace. another great video sirs, keep em rollin.
What did one firefly say to another? "Well, I guess I better be Glowing"
I'm really late again! I picked up a bottle of Auchentoshan American oak at the weekend. I'm enjoying it but it has the weirdest initial smell. It's smells like an infected cut, you know that sweet funky smell? It's an odd thing.
I'm morbidly curious. That's sounds really weird.
Rex I just poured one to "double check" yeah totally still getting it. I wonder is it the heavy oak smell mixed with sweet/sour and the coconut that you get when you taste it.
I completely agree. It's what turns me off of that one. I have researched this extensively, and I think it has to do with new oak?
Whiskey Vault Yeah, I do get a strong taste of wood and it isn't light toasted wood, it's heavy and damp. It's definitely weird but it doesn't completely put me of the whiskey. I have a small farm so perhaps I'm not repulsed by that smell anymore lol
Daniel, in one of ur recent Videos you talked about the Bottle of the Hibiki series (i really love them) and i wondered if there is any meaning in the symbol on the label wich looks like a tree or smth.....
Would llove to know
Stay true and keep making these awesome Videos !
I have to replace my Balvenie 12 so while I'm at it, I might pick this up as well.
I concur. I like the 12 but I love the 3 Wood.
My parents are on holiday (vacation) so I popped around this weekend to pick up mail and stuff. Guess what I saw in the guest bedroom. I wonder which whiskey I'm getting from santa
Rex's reaction to dad jokes are the best
Rex! Truly! A man of the "pweeble"
I would love to see your toasts in the video descriptions!
That's such a good idea. I'll start adding those.
Hey, I've been loving the videos and I really think that you should review Jeffreson's ocean aged at sea! I would love to see what you two think!
We did! ruclips.net/video/P8URJAFYXuM/видео.html
Daniel , Rex i love the videos. Any chance of you trying Jack Daniel's Sinatra Select.
If we could only find one....
can you guys review old grandad 114 proof it was my first bourbon and i am looking for similar bourbon
It's on the list to do soon!
Funnily enough, I got a bottle of this the other day on Amazon Prime Day. Was about £20 for the bottle. I really like it.
Edit:
It was Actually the Three Wood not the 12 year old
The three wood is awesome.
What's the name of the new distillery? It sounds like you're saying "They all said they" lol
Wait. It was about "Ailsa Bay". We actually did a video about it. Episode 69. I just forgot.
You guys did do a review of Ailsa Bay and it was episode 69 no less! I was going to suggest it before that video too. Such a great whisky. I wish it was easier to find round these parts.
So damn good.
Now Daniel is that American butter toast or British buttered toast?
Both ;-)
Auchentoshan makes damn fine whisky.
Yes. Yes it absolutely does.
They really do. I find their price/performance ratio to be outstanding.
the dancing slayed me haha
we keep it classy
It provided me with my next 3-4 profile pictures.
Honestly, I think the current one should be Rex's.
Peter Schumacher, that current picture of me is spicy. Like I'm doing the flamenco.
Hey guys! Please try Laphroaig Select! I tried it the other day... it's amazing
Yes it is! We'll add it to the video list.
Whiskey Vault cheers Dan
For all its faults, there is nothing better to put in dark coffee with some condensed milk. It has exactly the right blend of flowery, candied, savory and charred flavors to compliment the coffee, and the citrus cuts perfectly through the cream, while bringing out the sweetness.
You forgot to add that Auchentoshan was actually Founded by Irish refugees in 1825 (maybe 1823),, that may explain the triple distilled & the skew towards a more fruity & fragrant notes.
Love this whiskey once it has been breathing/ 3/4 of the bottle still in the bottle is enough to get a nice balanced taste with sweetness was very dry at the start but once it evaporated a little damn definitely my new favorite, need to get my hands on the American Oak Auchentoshan.
I'm drinking some right now. It's pretty simple, if you compare it to the 12 YO in car terms, then it's like a BMW 3-series to a 5-series.
Daniel , Rex love the videos. Any chance of you sampling The Dalmoe King Alexander III??? I lost my mind and bought the 12, the Cigar Malt (my favorite so far) and The King Alex III. If I must send you a bottle to watch you review it I will just let me know.
Man, those are amazing whiskies! The Cigar Malt is ridiculously good and the King Alex is like heaven in a glass. I love Dalmore bc even the age statement whiskies, ie 12, 15, 18, aren't a just progression of the same whisky at different ages. They're all very different and unique from one another.
The king is amazing. Still prefer the 12, but King Alex is something that needs to be done.
Yeah can't wait to try the King, planning on trying the 12 tomorrow with some friends. Keep up the videos. Oh and Daniel don't let Rex bust your balls for being so awesome and nerdy!!!
Hey Rex,
How do Mountains See?
they Peak.
hahahahahaha. nice formatting to hide the finish.
2000 dollars, hooooly crap. I bought 400-500 in the last month and I thought it was a bit excessive. I started a budget can from an old bruichladdich and now I only put 20 dollars in every week to devote to my addicti- I mean hobby
hobby. say it slowly after me. hobby.
Addictions are just Hobbys with consequences.
And Daniel is addicted to dad jokes. I think it's time for an intervention... Before Rex explodes.
Belfry I've been buying whisky regularly for the last 3 years. At first, I spent a lot more because I was actively trying to find my flavour preferences. Now that I know, I buy a lot less sampling bottles, and buy my preferred bottles from time to time. If I buy a bottle a month now, that's normally just to replace or stock up. I probably have 10-15 bottles of various single malts, blends, bourbon and ryes.
reptilianskin, what are your preferred bottles?
I think I'm about in that same boat where at first I'm trying to find flavors that I enjoy more than others.
I personally bought Jameson Caskmates, Eagle Rare 10 Bourbon, Buffalo Trace, Cragganmore 12, Hibiki (non-12yo edition and I'm afraid to open it because I don't think I'll ever find it again), Bruichladdich Classic, Speyburn Bradan Orach, Dalmore 12, Bulleit Rye, Kilchoman Single Malt (gift pack because it came with 2 glasses and I needed them baddly.)
Most of the selections I've bought I all see from channels like this ( and sometimes Ralfy, though Daniel and Rex are so much more enthusiastic that they make everything sound really good and makes me want to try everything). I feel like I've barely scratched the surface but even if I double my selection/spending, there are so many more out there. I currently have my eyes set on the Bruichladdich Port Charlotte, Second Batch, Dalmore Cigar Malt, and now an Auchentoshan to my list.
I really really could use a level 3 sommelier of my own to mooch off of or else I'm going to go broke!
I have purchased about $10,000 worth of scotch since Feb 2021. Don't really have a budget. Just buy what I think I would like to try. Sliante!
She Who Must Be OBEYED just gave me a bottle of this!! Oh yeah, definitely going to be one of the whiskies that I always have in the house!!!
Keep the videos coming and #whiskyfabric greetings from WhiskyJason in Germany!
Rex, while you don't like dad jokes, you obviously like dad dancing
Well dad dancing is a very different thing. It's how we get our cardio.
I see your emergency stock of toasts is depleted here's some more for you. "I'll have what the man on the floor's having! " "Work is the curse of the drinking class. --Oscar Wilde" "May you taste the sweetest pleasures that fortune ere bestowed, and may all your friends remember all the favors you are owed." "Better a well known drunkard Than an anonymous alcoholic." Now one for Daniel "Inspiring bold John Barleycorn!
What dangers thou canst make us scorn!
Wi'tippeny, we Fear nae evil;
Wi'usquabae, we'll face the devil!" Cheers
These are so good. A Challenge is showing up in the video today. Use one of these and send it to us in a video.
Daniel, I think it would be a rather good idea to somehow tie in a dad joke as the sign off.
I might not live through the day.
just bought the "springwood" version of this... its "friendly". lol.
Dang it! I didn't even know there was one! Now I need to try and find it.
3 wood? You guys golf? ;)
I'm trying to quit.
Auchentoshan 12 is a good quality whisky, but too friendly for my taste. That said, I have a weakness for Glenlivet and their offerings are very friendly. Great stuff as always. I'm waiting to see Rex spontaneously combust like a Spinal Tap drummer from all the great dad jokes.
YES. "He died in a bizarre gardening accident..."
Whiskey Vault They don't have the facilities in Scotland Yard to dust for vomit...
Does daniel own an other color shirt?
No. No i don't. I have 20 black tshirts at home. No need to make decisions in the morning.
I REALLY like it.
Beginning of week 2......there are so many more episodes! D: (But also, there's so many more episodes!!!! :D:D:D:D)
Ailsa Bay is amazing!
The stone in the lid a piece of granite from Ailsa Craig, the island off the Ayrshire coast from which the distillery gets its name. Good fact for you. Mike
YES IT IS. So damn good. Can't believe it's as young as it is with so much depth and character.
It's ok. Bottle says it spent time in sherry casks. Must have been an overnight stay!
I really like this whisky also.
Remember when you had 6 thousand. Now you are at 155 thousand. Pepperidge Farm remember's
Anybody ever try mixing just a little bit of Ardbeg 10 in with this? Curious on peoples thought
In Whisky Veritas
Ah, I like this brand!
6:00 - 6:30, is maniacal transition from hyper defensive to a slight concern, for anothers financial decisions... and only say slight, due to no accessibility of said bourbons and scotches #wedoingourbestman +WhiskeyVault
Why did the turkey cross the road
because he wasn't chicken....
my favorite comment section so far.
For every dad joke Rex should get to pick a whiskey he want to review, no questions asked. This way, we get to see both Daniel and Rex suffer.
Dang. That's rough. I'm hoping Rex doesn't see us.
Rod Espinoza, I dub thee - Whiskey Genius! That new rule begins immediately.
french toast with cinnamon
Data, engage!
At this rate I'm gonna fail my exams... I could listen to them talk about toilet papers all day... 😝
Is Rex wearing Pajama pants!?
woo, in the first 100 views today, and the third comment. Also the bad hipster joke in the last video was one I put in.
YES. Thank you. I couldn't remember it when we were shooting live.
I have to agree with what many others have been saying in the comments of this video with regards to your channel growing so quickly. You guy go through the comment section and reply to a lot of us down here and in some cases there are conversations that span across multiple videos. The engagement with your audience and the fact that you guys don't take yourselves too seriously in your videos but still show that you know what your talking about makes the channel approachable to people like me who are just starting to get into the world of whisk(e)y and keeps us coming back.
And to give a toast from Sinatra himself, Alcohol may be man's worst enemy, but the Bible says to love your enemy.
Am I having a stroke right now? This video is from right now isn't it? You said "even though nobody knows what it is we're gonna do a video about it (Ailsa Bay)" Ahh WHAT? You already did a video on it and told everyone about it
Yeah... we've shot so many, I completely forgot we had already done it.
That's what you get for being evil.
true
“Experiment”, “one thing at a time”... that’s like what that back alley doctor ssid about my sex change
