    The ending has nothing to do with: "Quasimodo is too ugly, so Esmeralda chooses Phoebus". Of course, in the film Quasimodo thinks he has a chance with her, and he is disappointed and hurt inside to see her kissing Phoebus. However, we forget that Esmeralda is the first girl(even too beautiful) that Quasimodo meets in his life. The first thought that crosses his mind is obviously "love", and that's understandable, but that's not his purpose in the story. Quasimodo's main purpose was not to get the girl, but to be accepted by the people, regardless of his appearance. The hug he gets from the little girl at the end explains it perfectly.

    I think it's worth mentioning that Phoebus isn't just a handsome knight. He's also someone with a good heart and I kinda like the relationship development between him and Esmeralda. Other people can and have explained it better than I can but I think it makes perfect sense why Quasi didn't end up with Esmeralda. Quasi saw Esmeralda as someone to worship because she was the first person who showed him any kindness. That's not to say that's a bad thing but it's also not really something that makes for a good relationship. Phoebus saw Esmeralda as a person. He's shown many times why Esmeralda became infatuated with him. I honestly prefer Quasi and Esmeralda's friendship rather than romantic.

    • @cesarsuarez7538
      @cesarsuarez7538 Год назад +3

      In the book Phoebus sees Esmeralda as meat. And we could say that Esmeralda and Quasi end up together because, after Esmeralda´s hanging and Quasimodo murdering Frollo, he goes to Esmeralda´s grave and dies hugged to her. Centuries after the two skeletons are found together. And this chapter is called "Quasimodo´s nuptials".

    • @maciekur
      @maciekur 7 месяцев назад +2

      I honestly fail to see the dirence between Quai being attracted to her and Phoebus being attracted to her. The way they develop feelings for her the same way, only Quasi is attracted to her kidness and Pheobus to her snapy dialog. Both are willing to sacrafice their lifes for her. The only diffrence is that Quasi get two songs how he feels about it while with Pheobus it's just the generic "That arrow strike my heart" talk

  • @RedaDoodles
    @RedaDoodles Год назад +71

    NO. The ending of the animated version by Disney is perfect because Quasimodo saw Esmeralda as a saint and an angel. He even refers to her as that in his song.
    On the other hand, Frollo saw her as a demon, a temptress and an object to conquer and/or destroy.
    Both of them saw her as a supernatural being (angel vs demon).
    Phoebus is the only one who saw her as an equal, a human being and that’s why they are perfect for each other.

      I totally don't buy this interpretation. Pheobus was also attracted to her looks and we learn very little how he feels about it beyond the generic "I'm in love with you". Quasimodo is attracted to Esmeralda at first (like all characters in the movie btw) but don't fall in love with her until after he spends time with her in the bell tower, she told him he is not a monster and he help her espace. It was after that his true crush starts. So there isn't much difrent between him and Pheobus. Also what flaws Esmeralda has in the movie? It's not fair to say Pheobus see her as human and not-flawles if there are no flaws to speak of.

    I'm going to copy a post I made on another Hunchback video. A lot of people don't like Quasimodo and Esmeralda not ending up together, but think it was essential to the story that Esmeralda does not return his romantic affections. The whole theme of the movie is "What makes a monster and what makes a man," with Frollo representing the monster and Quasimodo the man. The biggest difference between the two men is how they handle rejection from Esmeralda. Frollo becomes vengeful and tries to kill her, while Quasimodo risks his life to save her even though he knows she will never love him the way he wants her to. I think it sends a nice message about doing the right thing because it's the moral thing to do versus doing the right thing in hopes of "getting the girl."

    As a kid, I, too, was let down by Quasi-bro not getting with Esmerelda. However, rewatching it as an adult I think it's important that she didn't. This movie to this day has some of the most mature themes Disney has ever covered, and because of that I don't think it stands to compare with the other blockbusters in the studio's lineup.
    Esmerelda is the first person other than Frollo who he actually talks to, and being the indentured unseen servant he is, of course he would fall for someone who finally treats him with kindness. Esmerelda is a symbol of justice and freedom, and we see this goal reflected every time she is on screen. When she meets Quasi, she acknowledges him as an equal, until recognizing his innocence and naivete, she addresses him as a boy. Quasimodo in retrospect, is, just a boy. He has no experience with socializing in the outside world and his first attempts were met with harshness and cruelty. His current relationship with his father figure is abusive and manipulative. No matter how we look at it, Esmerelda getting with Quasimodo would be unbalanced, since she knows he is inexperienced and simply infatuated.
    Her character is grounded and mature, and we can see why she clicks with Phoebus despite clashing with him. As Quasimodo starts to go through his own character arc of breaking free of his own literal and mental shackles, he also reflects on his inexperience and comes to terms with Esmerelda not being attracted to him. Who is he to know what love is from adoration? Esmerelda chose a man, not because Quasi wasn't pretty enough, but because he is still a boy who needs to learn more of the world before falling into another relationship.
    (sorry for the long comment)

      I could understand that perspective if it weren't for the fact this dynamic was done again in Tangled but Rapunzel who lived an overly sheltered life and was a few years younger than Quasimodo still got together with her love interest.
      Quasimodo establishes pretty early on he knows what romantic love is and he hopes to one day receive it and not be rejected, he's absolutely devastated when he sees Esmeralda kiss Phoebus and then he just has to accept it.

This one had the decency to at least show that not every guy's happy ending is getting the girl, but achieving something greater. On a personal level, as someone with autism, seeing him overcome Frollo's manipulation, learn he could think for himself, and see that people could accept him for who he is, inspired me that I could achieve that too.

    I'm on the opposite end. I liked that Esmeralda did not get with Quasimodo. Sure, he's kind to her, as she was to him first. She is the first person to treat him with respect and empathy. Quasimodo can easily mistake this for love, but Esmeralda did not do any of that because she was in love with him She befriends him, like a man would too, because he's nice and they get along. Her not getting with Quasimodo humanizes her, as there is more than one man she's met and she doesn't just fall for anyone that is kind to her. Quasimodo still helping her, regardless of her romantic feelings shows the audience that he's not some superficial nice guy. Unlike Frollo, who fetishises Esmeralda, Quasimodo CARES about her in a selfless way. Frollo is posessive, Quasimodo is not. It shows the differwnce between the protagonist and the antagonist.
    If you want ugly guy plus hot woman, there are so many comedies that cather to that fantasy. Out of my league, any girl featuring born-sexy-yesterday, Adam Sandler movies. We don't need that in a kid movie. As a woman I really loved that the Hunchback of the Notre Dame did not end up like one of those movies.

  • @starrsmith3810
    @starrsmith3810 Год назад +10

    Quasimodo said it best as to why he didn’t get Esmeralda. “Suddenly an Angel” he saw her as a angel. It’s understandable and it’s not his fault but it’s really not that healthy. Phoebus saw her as a person as opposed to a person and not as a sin, the g slur, or an angel.
    Honestly I admire that he didn’t get the girl because it’s realistic. Someone’s you don’t get the person you wanted and really he handled that one like a champ. He didn’t hold it against her, treat her like he’s owed her affection, or anything. He just accepted it because he cared about her. Frollo would’ve literally tried to have Phoebus killed and tried to take Esmeralda for himself and really kill her too if she didn’t accept him.
    The point isn’t that he’s too ugly. The movie literally condemns the people who see him like that and it gives him what he wanted originally. Acceptance. I’m also of the belief that he’s not entitled to have a relationship with her and she isn’t a prize to be won. She’s just simply a kind woman who cares for him as a friend, not as a lover.

    • @maciekur

      I don't think the Phoebus saw her as a person theory hold water and it's something people tent to repeat. Pheobus and Quasi are both attracted to her beauty at first and later fall in love with her - one do to her kidness and other do to her fisty spirit. Quasi sing she is an angel but that's just ment be a poetic expression. It's not difrent from how Aladdin feels about Jasmin or Herucles feels about Meg. It's normal to feel this way about a person you just fallen in love. With Pheobus we don't get much exploration how he see her beyond few generic oneliners

    The story was also about accepting the fact wen your amorous interest is not reciprocated. The plot was written by that way: Esmeralda fall in love with Phoebus and vice versa, they are even introduced in the same scene and are into each other. Additionally the protagonist Quasi fall for her and the villain Frollo lust after her. But none of that interests are reciprocated. Quasimodo is the hero for accepting it and even saves her, Frollo didn't and because of that he is the monster.
    Phoebus & Esmeralda relationship is deeper than just physical attraction they have the same moral compass and character and both are grounded mature persons. They notice that similarity even if their background are different and conflicting, that supports the movie's antir@cist message too. Also it helped the character development of both. Phoebus lerned to follow his conscience even if it is hard, Esmeralda lerned to not fear from the ppl out of her folk.

    Even tho im just as "pretty" as the girl ive been in love for the past 17 years, i do share the feeling Quasimodo had when he saw his beloved girl being happy.... Happiness. I was so confused, but whenever i see her picture with a boyfriend, i am genuenly happy that she is happy. I bet there are many people who would give me their "empirical" psychological analasys, but my reality stands as a fact. I wouldnt make her happy and seeing her happy is enough for me. Weird? We are all weird, look past it, i dont want to ruin another life because mine is. By the realisation of our existence that is... Who ever i spoke to about how i see the big picture, just couldnt handle it with an open mind and so i realised truth is more of a burden than a blessing. In our reality at least...

    Sure, it would have been nice to see Quasimodo end up with Esmeralda, but it's easy enough to understand why the ending was the way it was when you consider the movie's villain: Frollo. Quasi's character is positioned as the opposite of Frollo's in a lot of ways, and that contrast is perhaps clearest when it comes to their love for Esmeralda. Frollo's "love" all throughout the film is possessive and lustful, only wanting Esmeralda for himself and doing anything in his power to take her by force, even going so far as to burn her at the stake just to prevent any other man from having her; he's the true incel, of the film. Quasi's love, on the other hand, is pure and selfless, in that he ultimately just wants her to be happy with whomever she chooses, even if it isn't him. All he really wanted in the end was acceptance and the chance to live a normal life among the people of the city; that, and having Esmeralda and Phoebus as friends was enough for him. I totally get, though, how weirdly convenient it is that the Disney animated movie delivering this message *just so happens* to be the only one where the MC doesn't get with the love interest in the end, as well as the one where the MC *just so happens* to be physically deformed. It is a tad sus, I fully admit that, but I still think the ending they went with was a good one that fit the themes set up by the film.
    As for my thoughts on Phoebus, when I first saw him I thought they were going to go the love triangle route, too, that he was essentially going to be the Gaston of the film, just a pompous, swaggering obstacle with no other character traits standing between Quasimodo and Esmeralda hooking up... and I'm very glad they didn't go this route. For one, it would've been far too predictable, and for another, the trope was already sooo overdone by that point (like I said, they already did this a few movies ago with 'Beauty and the Beast'). I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Phoebus is just this cool, nice guy who cared about doing the right thing, not the typical jerk I thought he was going to turn out to be. It was honestly refreshing that the movie subverted my expectations in that way and that Quasi and Phoebus didn't end up having some le epic incel duel to "win" Esmeralda's affection or something trite like that.

  • @jessicascoullar3737

    You have missed the point. Quasimodo and Frollo are mirrors of each other. Quasimodo is ugly on the outside and Frollo on the inside, both rejected by Esmeralda who they both claim to love. Frollo responds with a violent and possessive rage and Quasimodo while also being rejected accepts her choice and still desires her happiness even if it won’t include him. The question at the start is which of these two are the monster, Quasimodo proves that he is truly a good man as he did what was right even though he got nothing out of it. If he only did the right thing first Esmeralda to earn her love it wouldn’t be as selfless as his love is, still risking everything for her even though he knows she loves someone else. He is showing true Christian charity (love asking nothing in return) while the self-proclaimed righteous man is the lustful monster.

    I think that films (or any texts for that matter) do not have to be necessarily attached to a "message". Just like in real life, unexpected things can happen that don't really have some greater meaning. We acknowledge this in other texts (what's the message of Romeo and Juliet? Do not fall in love with somebody your family does not accept or else you will die?), but I think we're conditioned by the history of Disney animation to expect a classic moral at the end. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is an exception to that in the sense that there is no faultless "happy ever after". The characters do not all get what they want. This film deviates from what we expect from Disney, and that leads us to see some moral that isn't there. Some endings are not perfect and have hints of tragedy; not everything is an Aesop fable.
    In a sense, I am quite pleased with the ending of the film because it shows plain and simple that bad things happen sometimes and there is nothing wrong with that.

    There is not about Esmeralda have to chose between Quasimodo and Phoebus. Esmeralda didn't even know Quasi's amorous feelings may be until he saves her, and already loves other.

    This animation based on the movie adaptation of the book with the same name of 1939. There she ends up with Pierre Gringoire. Here Phoebus and Pierre Gringoire from the book melted together due to the shorter time.
    You can check the Good Times animated version too, I think you will like. 😜

    To me, this movie has some of the very best AND the very worst writing in Disney movies. The songs are lovely, the main characters are great, the themes are amazing. But I also really didn't like the ending for those same reasons you said. I would've been fine if Esmeralda just didn't end up with either of them but even as a kid I heard the message of being "too ugly for love" loud and clear. As a kid with low self-esteem in the looks department it made me really sad. Also, the humor in this movie is so far off the mark for me. It doesn't fit the tone of the movie at all and I found the gargoyles extremely annoying.

    The ending in the movie is actually better than the one in the book. In the book, Esmeralda goes on to the next life because the author's self-insert character decides to save the life of a goat instead.

    What's worse is they gave Phoebus all the same qualities: brave, kind, heroic and had her pick the more attractive version of Quasimodo in the end. That's what makes the "it's what's inside that counts" message ring hollow (pardon the pun) because they both had the same stuff inside, but in the end it was still the handsome knight who won the girl over and not the 'half-formed man'.

    Now this was a great video, specially the comments about... Quasimodo's... hm... 🍆😳... but just adding two things for your point:
    1. All of these "misunderstood monsters" stories end up the same way. "Yes you can be a hero being ugly, but you won't get the girl sorry, asking to be considered diserable is asking too much". The Man Who Laughs, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Phantom of the Opera, Frankenstein. And worse: Phoebus is an evil person in the novel, they turned him good ONLY to let Quasimodo alone. Enough of this bulls-t, Quasimodo deserved Esmeralda.
    2. Many idio- i mean hm, people, use the argument of "uwu Esmeralda chose Phoebus because Quasi idolized her too muuuchhh!", and this is hilariously stupid. First, Esmeralda didn't "chose Phoebus over Quasi", she didn't even know Quasimodo was in love with her. And second, it's so cruel and ridiculous to expect a victimized, abused person to "hold their feelings" this way. He never idolised her as a supernatural being or something like this, he was just in love with her. THAT'S ALL, WHAT CRIME IS HE COMITTING BY *LOVING* A WOMAN????? Funny, Phoebus was only attracted by Esmeralda's physical appearance, he said he was "in love" with her after meeting her for 2 minutes, but that's not idolizing. Oh no, the hot dude flerting with a woman he didn't even know the name yet is romantic and sweet, BUT if an ugly guy loves someone (and i'm not even saying "flerting", i mean loving in secret) then he's a creep, "too emotional" and "idolizes" people.
    Honestly, f-k you if you think this is right. Phoebus and Esmeralda have no chemestry, unlike her and Quasi. He deserved Esmeralda. "uwu she is not a prize to be won!!" and when she ends up with a hot guy that does literally the minimal you don't say anything? Pathetic 😂😂
