I think this is a massive upgrade as the 8K really make a difference--people complaining about the sensor but do you really know how bulky it would be if you stuck 2 bigger sensors in the camera? X4 already gives the best output with physical restriction and I believe this is the best all-in-one action camera in the market you can get already
Great review. On the X4 did they resolve the single Bluetooth connection limitation meaning can either connect the remote or an external audio/airpods?
Cheers Jordan - you really hit the nail on the head! We're stoked with this one and really think it'll be a powerhouse with the 8K capability. Thanks again 🙌
I agree. The x4 definitely sharper, but not that much, not worth to upgrade, and it's larger. The x3 is already large compared my older Sony cams. Why I really hate Insta? I bought my x3 just 2 months ago. Everybody said that Insta releases their cameras in every autumn. No roadmaps like at Apple, Samsung. So,now I have a new x3 for the same price as the x4.

I am sure this will be the next version. This is how these companies keep marketing for their products.
Can you explain why framing your shots in insta360 on pc gives you higher quality than framing shots on the insta360 mobile app? Its using the same shots, in the same resolution.
@@jdtravelninja It sounds weird, but I can confirm this. The stitching is way better in Insta360 Studio compared to the app; and imho the image quality is too, subjectively
@@camaira_birds-views Wow, thats weird. I always used the app since 2021 with the X2, and always loved how fast and easy edits could be made without needing a laptop. I am trying to make up my mind about which camera to buy. I never had a 360 camera before and all the review videos I watched make me want to get one. One question I have is, are these cameras gods for underwater videos? Even in this video Jordan said they aren’t so good underwater but dive cases are available. What does that mean? Good Vid Jordon! 3 questions. 1. For remote, hands free, extended duration operation, is it possible to consume power from an extended duration, externally attached battery WITHOUT having to remove the internal bat? 2. Is there any way to consume all of the power from both the internal battery AND the external extended battery without ANY operator intervention? 3. Is battery usage one at a time only...either the external or the internal until dead but no dual usage or automatic switching?
Great review, as always, but not worth the upgrade for existing X3 users. To me, it's a question of what currently works well, as opposed to drilling down on resolution specs, etc. that the average person doesn't notice on fast-paced action videos. What's really disturbing though is the X4's glass “Premium Lens Guard” option that's not backward compatible to the X3. As most X3 users can attest, the current X3 “Sticky Lens Guard” option is clumsy, expensive, and adversely affects image quality. Believe me, accidentally scratch a lens and you're in for lengthy, costly, repair and/or replacement process! Perhaps an X3 to X4 trade-in program would persuade current X3 users to “take the plunge”, but then too, there's all those accessories (e.g. dive case, batteries, charge hubs, et-al) that do not migrate to the X4. Albeit the Insta360 X3 and X4 are both amazing cameras, but for now, I’m sticking with my X3.
Great review and comparison by Jordan. Answered all the questions I could have possibly had. Guessing he had advance access to the camera seeing as how he's got a book out and a very comprehensive video on launch day! @delzane, thanks for your comments. Here's where I'm at... I just got my X3 last summer and already had to go through the repair process once due to a scratched lens. So naturally the thought of having easily removable and reusable lens guards is tugging at me to upgrade. Honestly should have been a part of the original design to begin with. The problem is I've also got 3 extra batteries, the 10 ft selfie pole and the GPS remote. Guessing the pole and remote would still work with the X4 but sucks that I can't still use the batteries. Agreed a trade in program would certainly ease the pain but from the company's perspective, I doubt we'd see something like that. Admittedly it's par for the course with electronics that there's always the shiny new model right around the corner so I guess I have to really think about how I use my X3 to see if it's worth upgrading. It's just those damn lens guards killing me. For context, I'm still using a GoPro Hero 4 knowing they are up to the 12 now, but the ancient GoPro still does what I need it to. It's rugged. Really frustrated about these lens guards!
Great video - I've recently bought the X3 but wanted a second camera. I think after watching this I'll just get another X3 because I want the smaller/lighter camera and the extras/upgrades on the X4 aren't going to be of much use for me.
Hi David, Obviously the camera is fresh off the press, but I've been using it in the water (mostly ocean) extensively since I got it. I've filmed in medium sized surf with lots of sandy water. I'm always really careful to make sure all of the doors are sealed really well, but I haven't had any leakage at all. I hope that helps!
Thank you for the excellent, informative video, highly appreciated. I've got a few questions about Insta X4 (or Insta in general), related to my long car drive recordings. 1. Does it work long time when plugged to a charger? With a GoPro I can record many hours without swapping the battery. 2. Does it have a time warp mode (like a GoPro, time lapse with stabilization and horizon levelling - for dynamic scenes, long drives for example)? 3. Can it be controlled from a mobile phone, thru an app?
Does the X4 have the same gap in recording after the 29 minute mark? I use this for recording my motorcycle rides and there is a large gap between the files that are recorded on the X3. Thanks for the video!
Aloha back to you in Japan! There are some good deals happening now on the X4 for those Black Friday deals. I visited Japan again last month and had a fantastic time in Arashiyama.👍 Keep livin it up!
360 cameras are super weird for vlogging. I would only use it as a b-roll camera to get a few interesting shots to blend into your normal camera footage in editing.
Excellent comparisons! This is really helpful when trying to decide whether to upgrade my X3. Personally, I find the improvements in colour rendering and dynamic range to be more noticable than the resolution boost - though I only watched this on a laptop. Hmm. My wallet aches!
I'll buy this just because Im a gullible collector of GoPro and now Insta360 and I love the way my wife look at me everytime I buy another not needed gadget.
For use as a dashcam and some fun videos for social media, I don't really see the need to upgrade from X3 to the X4. But good to see developments are being made, can't wait for what the next one will improve :)
I just read x4 has maximim ISO of 60 while x3 has 3200. Is that accurate? And if so, does that not indicate the x4 us actually much worse for low light conditions?
I have seen 10 reviews and they are all the same, they give direct support to buying the x4 when most of the best ones would be a nice software update and a little more battery. So, it's difficult for now to know a real review where the balance doesn't just ''TIP'' to whether you buy the x4 when most of the reviews are gift cameras. Let's wait a couple of months where normal humans buy and give their reviews ;) Still, thanks for the work for showing the videos of the 2 cameras, thank you!
I am still waiting for a Insta360 camera that can do both 360 and 180-3D video's (like the old EVO). Why oh why isn't Insta360 making a follow up for the EVO?? I love depth in my video's on my Quest 2 VR headset. Also, you cancel out the reframing part, while you still have enough room to look around in the 180 degree world.
So you don't need dive case to go surfing with the X3/X4? How's the audio after the surf gets over the camera? Do you need to blow it off or its clean after a duck dive?
How’s the lenses? Any upgrades on them? Keep reading comments how bad they scratch..(x3) trying to figure out if I should get the x3 or new x4, mainly because of that
The X4 is way far from a Sony telephoto, but it also is able to create something completely unique to what a traditional camera can capture. Have fun with it!
I love your comparison video, new sub here! I want your opinion on which cam to choose: X3 vs X4 vs Ace or Ace Pro. I'll be mainly recording my kids, cycling adventures and travel. I like the X4 and Pro models for their future proof capabilities but wondering if the regular models would suffice.
If you want a more direct camera that doubles as an action camera then go for Ace pro. But personally I won’t advice you if you have a solid phone camera. Because it’s more or less going to give you similar features. If you want a more exciting imaging and videos, and you aren’t sure about which one, then go for X3. If you want the best image quality, 8k resolution, more rugged and slightly better color science. Then go for the X4. Personal advice, go for the X3, most of the amazing 360 camera videos you see on RUclips, TikTok, Instagram and other social networks were created by the X3. If you have a good camera phone then you don’t need the Ace or Ace pro. With the X3 or X4 you’d be able to create more exciting features and do more adventure shots. A friend of mine in Finland has the X3 and he records his baby and trust me he makes very exciting videos. Sadly he don’t post on socials except WhatsApp, I’d have sent his handle to check him out. So my advice is, get the X3 and wait for X5 which would have a bigger sensor. If you really want to get the best performance but only slightly better than the X3 then go for X4. But if you ain’t going to be using the 8k like most people won’t, then X3 is the best bet!!
@@Roy_MO Awesome, thanks for the breakdown. It really helps to decided which is the best my needs. I think the X4 would be overkill because my monitor is only 4k and I wouldn't be able to utilize the 8k quality - plus I'm not doing any professional output with it. I was leaning towards the X series because of it's unquie views vs the Ace models.
I really liked your video Jordan. I am just starting back up my RUclips channel. Point A Adventures shoots motorcycle footage, hiking, travel etc. But we also do product reviews. Do you consider the X4 a good camera for regular talking, product demonstration type videos? Thanks!
Great review, I see you're wearing glasses, they look polarized to me. Can you tell me if the touch screen is visible when using them? I ask because in the insta360ace/ace pro it isn't. Thank you so much and what a fantastic location and colors! Thanks and greetings from Italy.
For me, it's similar to the Ace Pro in that I can functionally use it but the polarization causes some strange lighting effects on the screen. It probably depends on the glasses. Mine are not the best 😉
I'm just looking for a camera to use while on my bike for safety, a sort of dash-cam style use only, you know, to have myself covered and everything recorded. Is a 360 cam even something I should be looking for for this use? It is an electric bike, so I should be able to record throughout my entire time riding right? But maybe a simple wide angle (fishbowl) style cam is all I really need. Please let me know camera and safety experts
Having had to send my x3 back after failing 19 seconds under 2 foot of water with salt water in the battery compartment I’m waiting to see if they replace . If they don’t then I won’t be upgrading I’ll be ditching the x3 and not buying insta again . The camera was correctly sealed and locked , checked and double checked . If they do replace or repair I’d be tempted to upgrade even though the x3 was only a month old
@@bruceskousen5451 I disagree if it’s advertised as waterproof to 10 metres then that’s what it should do . A friend has one and he uses it to that depth regularly with no issues . I had a duff one
I would reach out to them and explain the situation. If it was properly sealed, it's advertised to be waterproof to 33' deep. It probably just depends on how it has to be proven. I hope they take care of it for you!
I'm currently testing both the x4 and the x3 I have to say when I film both at 5.7 in nice weather you can already notice a difference or when I film at 8k on the X4 Is this difference big enough to make an update? My personal opinion NO You can see more details with the The colors can be easily changed in the cutting program I think the x3 is a GREAT camera (the disadvantage of the X3 is that it takes longer to turn on and off and the battery doesn't last as long The disadvantage of the x 4 with the stick It seems heavier in the long run, which annoys me a bit I think the tone is the same for both But when I watch films on a nice day with the For example, when I film with the Pocket 3 and the Ace Pro in low light, there is a much greater difference. In the lowlight area whether X 3 or (X4 a little better) Both aren't that good But it is also clear that both of them are very nice weather cameras
Thank you for the feedback. It's nice to hear your experience. My experience was a bit different and I noticed a really dramatic difference between the image quality on the two cameras. But I really appreciate hearing other perspectives! Thank you.
Does the X4 drop 12 seconds of video too when it splits the file for a long recording? I did not know this about the X3 and for my purposes, it is super annoying that after 29 minutes of recording, a new file is being created on the SD card and it could happen right when I wanted to capture something important.
hi, thanks for your really great videos. I have a rather urgent question, i read that x4 has a mode that it can wake up and click a photo and go back to sleep/off. I would like to set it so that it keeps clicking photos every 1 minute or 5 minutes. Is that possible?
How cool would it be if you could tripod two of these that were linked. Anything walking thru, the software could let you do matrix-like camera movements.
Both of the cameras have a wind reduction setting, but I do find that the audio on the X4 is much better than the X3. The X4 just has an Auto setting, but you could manually select this on the X3 when you know it's going to be windy.
Great review (like the fourth I'm watching now). The X4 really seems to be a great image quality update real 4K was always missing with 360 vids, especially the higher frame rates are a game change for action sports (which most of us use it for I gues?). It just seems like the overall most rounded 360° action cam right now, given that the other cams and X2 and X3 have more compromises. Guess it is reaaally time to replace my trusty Osmo Action 4 for daily shoots and get this bad boy, you convinced me :D
The standard is plastic and the premium is tempered glass. For 2 premium guards it will cost you $70. I've seen a comparison and the plastic ones work really well but may not be as durable.
Yes the tempered glass on the Premium Lens Guards are going to give you more clarity. Any time you add more glass (or plastic) over a lens, it tends to have some impact on the quality. However, using either of the lens guards will add the extra nuisances such as extra glare and potential fogging. It's worth it though in situations where the lenses may get damaged.
I`v tried the GoPro Hero 9 Black on top of my motorcycle fork. There you have some heat from the engine which doesn't went well for the camera. Interupted videos, sometimes you had sound but no pictures or the recording stoped after 6minutes or so. Do you think I'll get the same trouble with overheating when I use the X4?

Then the X4 get released and is much better and they wont do nothing about it... ugh... I did some tests on the 360 degree mode which I plan to take videos with on my motorcycle and they quality is horrible unless I run it through an AI editor after...

Thanks Bud, learned a lot!
Aloha Jordan from Japan! Mahalo for the video. I am definitely going to upgrade to the X4 but gonna for the Black Friday deals.
Aloha back to you in Japan! There are some good deals happening now on the X4 for those Black Friday deals. I visited Japan again last month and had a fantastic time in Arashiyama.👍 Keep livin it up!
Thanks for the review. IT was so good that now I know that I don't need nor want a 360 camera. You saved me a lot of money!
Nice! I'm glad I was able to help!
Watching from Philippines hope to have this for my vlogging soon
360 cameras are super weird for vlogging. I would only use it as a b-roll camera to get a few interesting shots to blend into your normal camera footage in editing.
First of all, no one gives a damn if you are from the Philippines or from your mother. 360 cameras Warp your face.
Excellent comparisons! This is really helpful when trying to decide whether to upgrade my X3. Personally, I find the improvements in colour rendering and dynamic range to be more noticable than the resolution boost - though I only watched this on a laptop. Hmm. My wallet aches!
does the X4 allow passthrough charging?
Like record a video without the battery while directly using/plugged to an external power via a powerbank?
Yes and no. You can use external usb-c pd but with battery in.
How is it a “pretty big upgrade” to film me mode in 4k @ 30fps instead of 1080p @ 60fps
I'll buy this just because Im a gullible collector of GoPro and now Insta360 and I love the way my wife look at me everytime I buy another not needed gadget.
Haha. Yes your wife will adore you!
For use as a dashcam and some fun videos for social media, I don't really see the need to upgrade from X3 to the X4. But good to see developments are being made, can't wait for what the next one will improve :)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Chyba dobrze, że tak długo zastanawiałem się nad zakupem x3, teraz będę mógł kupić x4 😊
So you don't need dive case to go surfing with the X3/X4? How's the audio after the surf gets over the camera? Do you need to blow it off or its clean after a duck dive?
Thanks for the update. Could you tell me which modes are single lens only and which are full 360?
I give you a rundown in the video as I go through all of the modes. Check it out 👍
Honest review it seems
How’s the lenses? Any upgrades on them? Keep reading comments how bad they scratch..(x3) trying to figure out if I should get the x3 or new x4, mainly because of that
it is my issue too
Wanted a telephoto e mount Sony lens, got the x4 instead. Going to try out something new. Wish me luck 😅
The X4 is way far from a Sony telephoto, but it also is able to create something completely unique to what a traditional camera can capture. Have fun with it!
Nice comparison, the new X4 looks great. Thanks for sharing.
@@creative907You are welcome, glad I could help.
I really liked your video Jordan. I am just starting back up my RUclips channel. Point A Adventures shoots motorcycle footage, hiking, travel etc. But we also do product reviews. Do you consider the X4 a good camera for regular talking, product demonstration type videos? Thanks!
What about accessories? My mic adapters and my quick drive, will they work on the x4?
Great review, I see you're wearing glasses, they look polarized to me. Can you tell me if the touch screen is visible when using them? I ask because in the insta360ace/ace pro it isn't. Thank you so much and what a fantastic location and colors! Thanks and greetings from Italy.
For me, it's similar to the Ace Pro in that I can functionally use it but the polarization causes some strange lighting effects on the screen. It probably depends on the glasses. Mine are not the best 😉
Amazing video breaking down the differences
Thank you!!
Can you use the Insta360 as a point and shoot camera?
great review very useful many thanks for your time & effort :) subbed too
Hi, am I right in saying that the X4 has a cache? and because of that, there are no dropouts when continually recording for extended periods? TIA
If they do replace or repair I’d be tempted to upgrade even though the x3 was only a month old
I doubt you’ll have any luck. They have no way of knowing whether it was 2 ft or 40ft. You should always use a housing, especially in salt water.
I'm currently testing both the x4 and the x3
I have to say when I film both at 5.7 in nice weather
you can already notice a difference
or when I film at 8k on the X4
Is this difference big enough to make an update?
My personal opinion NO
You can see more details with the
The colors can be easily changed in the cutting program
I think the x3 is a GREAT camera (the disadvantage of the X3 is that it takes longer to turn on and off and the battery doesn't last as long
The disadvantage of the x 4 with the stick
It seems heavier in the long run, which annoys me a bit
I think the tone is the same for both
But when I watch films on a nice day with the
For example, when I film with the Pocket 3 and the Ace Pro in low light, there is a much greater difference.
In the lowlight area whether X 3 or (X4 a little better)
Both aren't that good
But it is also clear that both of them are very nice weather cameras
That's a really good idea! It would be possible to create that mount. Editing is where it would get tricky 😉
Shame there is not wireless mic capability as this would make it amazing and worth an upgrade from my X3 but for now will give it a miss
Thanks for the video! Cheers 🍻
where is this video shot? this looks like a beach wonder playground
Id be using the 360 on motorcycle trips. Would the wind reduction setting alone be worth the upgrade to the x4?
Both of the cameras have a wind reduction setting, but I do find that the audio on the X4 is much better than the X3. The X4 just has an Auto setting, but you could manually select this on the X3 when you know it's going to be windy.
i just bought an x3 this morning T_T had no idea this was coming out
same
@czechio you can cancel and upgrade, i did and they were fine about it. Good luck x
@@CheeksMcLappin i dont want because i have the motorcycle kit and i need it
@@shadevelt i got the motorcycle kit with my x4, trust me the double frame rate is really useful especially if you like to go fast ;)
Hi im interested in getting the x4 would you know what the wind noise is like as im planning on putting it ony motorcycle 🙃 thanks 🙂
Thanks, Excellent comparison Video.
Have mine a few days......defenitely worth the upgrade......everything is better.....crazy 11 k timelapse
Thanks for the feedback! I agree and am super impressed with this camera.
are the majority of the x3 accessories compatible with the x4?
What’s the actual difference between the std lens guard and premium lens guard
The standard is plastic and the premium is tempered glass. For 2 premium guards it will cost you $70. I've seen a comparison and the plastic ones work really well but may not be as durable.
@@kelex12 Great thank you.
Nice comparison, Jordan! Really insightful stuff. Love how thorough this is 🙌
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the comment!
Great info, thanks!
Glad it was helpful! You are very welcome 🙏🏼
I had the hero 9 black and it was really buggy. I had it replaced with a hero 10 black.
The same size sensor of one x3, 1/2 inch.
I have X3. If i broken my camera than i willbuy x4 . But otherwise i will wait X5. Or İnsta360 compony if say bring old camera back take new one half price ı can think about that too..
Hai can u sponsor me any used camera if u are buying one
I really need one to content but can't afford to buy
I just bought my x4-but in studio I can not get the video stable its weird -but its ok in the app? I then went back w my x3 and put a clip in the new studio ,that was fine..it's very frustrating ..any info would be great ! ty
i have x2 but realy hate is transition artifacts in 360mode, what is your opinion about this video quality artefacts?
I bought the X3 when it was like $50 off before Christmas. I didn't plan on using it till around now/spring and summer. Then the X4 get released and is much better and they wont do nothing about it... ugh... I did some tests on the 360 degree mode which I plan to take videos with on my motorcycle and they quality is horrible unless I run it through an AI editor after...
Hopefully on the x5 better low light capture like what they did on ace pro. Then ill upgrade.😊
What about the codec options on the X4. I don't think they're available in the X3. Doesn't the X4 shoot ProRes and h.265?
The X4 offers h.265 but not ProRes.
Really great comparison
Thanks very helpful although i have insta 360 x3 but helpful in deciding
Glad it was helpful!
is there ai editing for the desktop software?
what kind of set up are you using @12:54 as tripod
is it extended selfie with universal tripod from insta360
How about the social media platforms they wouldn't handle that resolution yet!
You are right. You don't need to upload high res videos to Instagram or TikTok, but it's easy to edit down to a lower resolution using the Insta360 app or any video editor.
I've just bought my x3 and return timeframe expired as soon as x4 comes out. OMG
Bummer! If you want to upgrade, you could probably sell it on FB or something. But the X3 is also a great camera!
Nice comparison. Big update. I own all of the insta360 cams in this serie
