Hi Dan, I love your channel. I do something similar to a farmer's carry. I call it a Kettlebell Ruck. I take a Kettlebell that weighs about 10% of my body weight and hike up and down the side of a hill with it. I hike about 2.5 miles in about an hour. It is the best exercise I've ever done. I constantly vary the intensity by watching my heart rate and breathing. I get it all: LISS, HIT, and HIIT in that hour, and it feels great. Humans are designed to carry stuff around. Keep up the great work.
I loved the comment about being 62 and still getting called to help move. I'm 66, and I still get called to help my adult children and their friends move. Lots of odd object carries in my late teens and early twenties and into my thirties. Love your work, Dan.
I do dropsets starting with a 55 pound weight on each arm…45,35,25…2 sets a piece as far I can walk until almost failure…it’s truly my favorite exercise.
I live in Taiwan(Sometimes in mainland China) , I rarely see people doing farmer walks in the gym which I personally thought it's one of the best ( and low risk of injury ) exercise that I can make.
Just FYI to the readers: on the topic of carries everyday. Think if it this way..... bricklayers, laborers, concrete men, landscapers are basically doing this all day everyday..... construction is a lot of GTG type of work, it’s why it’s important we warmup before the work day..
Wow I didn't know u had a channel. I have been doing farmers walk and different Carrie's along with heavy one arm dumbell press on reading your advise somewhere years ago. Best excice advice I ever received. Thanks so excited about your channel
I occasionally do farmers' walks, but more often do suitcase carries with kettlebells as well as one arm rack carries with KBs. I like the way they work the core more than the farmers walk
@@susaville The suitcase carry is carrying the weight in one hand only. This works the core and supporint muscles on the other side. You alternate sides. The farmers carry is carrying the weight in both hands. So the weight is balanced and you do less core and supporting muscle work. However you can carry heavier weights, so it does require the legs , hips and feet to do more work. Hope that helps.
62 y/o ??!! are you kidding? you look 10 years younger, at least! Anyway, I started few month ago loaded carries, I tried some of them but the one I prefer is the 1 arm suitcase carries. I feel ALL my back working (yes , even the lats), my abs screaming and my shoulders in flames! plus, as a bonus , it works a lot of postural muscles. To me it has been a game changer
Hi Dan I just found you and love your videos and knowledge! I have bad bicep tendons on both sides of muscle of left arm and can not lift. I am 51 years old and started doing farmers walks and found I can do these and have been doing about 45 minutes 3 times a week and can now do half pushups too. Any exercises you can think of for upper body that would be mild on left arm? Thanks
Hi Dan, I’ve found your channel fantastic! Dan what do think of this to hit all the basics and a carry? Can be done with KBs DBs or a Bar. 1/ Squat Press 2/ Romanian D/lift BORow 3/ Farmer’s Walk?? Big fan Tom
Hello Dan, I have a specific question- For trap hypertrophy (hard gainer shrugs don't work), what is better: Farmer walks with: 1) Very heavy but short distance 2) Moderately heavy for long distance 3) Very heavy with straps (yes I know) for long distance Thank in advance
Love the videos coach. Question though. I’m looking at creating my own home gym a little piece at a time, Can kettlebells( heavy ones) get me started till I can acquire the more expensive piece of equipment like a rack? Thanks coach.
Absolutely. You don't need much and KBs are plenty. If you need workouts to go with whatever equipment you have, checkout my workouts website. www.danjohnworkouts.com. We made it so you can customize the workouts based on your equipment needs. There's a free trial, so try the park bench workouts and see if it will help you.
Loving the videos John, thank you. How would you add farmers walks to Simple and sinister? I am currently on that program and wanted to add this, looks like like fun. Thanks
You could easily add them as a finisher after the get ups if you wanted. You could also finish that program, see what kind of results you get, and then do it again with the carries added.
Hi Dan, I’m Mark from Australia. Started doing Farmers Walk this week with 20kg in each hand. I weigh 90kg. What would be the ideal weight to start with? I’m aged 63 & reasonably fit. Thankyou in advance.
Hi Dan, I have a question: we know the squat is a movement pattern in which there is maximum knee and hip flexion. I think it doesn't matter where the load is, as long as you follow the pattern: if it's on your back, it's a back squat; if it's on your hands in front of you, it's a goblet squat; if it's on the crook of your elbows, it's a zercher squat, and so on. I've ditched the back squat for some time and have been exclusively doing trap-bar squats. I do them standing on a block, so I can reach maximum knee and hip flexion. Some people say it's not a squat, it's a deadlift, since the weight start on the ground. I think a trap-bar deadlift is something totally different, in which the hips go back and there is little knee flexion. What do you think? Can I substitute the back squat for trap-bar squats if I'm only training for strength gains and the looks?
I like lots of variation. Trap bars are great and if you're getting what you need out of them, you have my permission to keep doing them. I would keep doing some goblet squats to force the upright position from time to time, but there's nothing wrong with any of the variations of squats.
If you start at the top and simultaneously break at the ankles, knees, and hips, and maybe turning around near parallel without grounding the plates, it's a lot like a squat. If you start with plates on the ground and hips set back, using hip hinge as soon as the middle of the plates clear the knees, it's more of a deadlift.
As for carries, I have access to DB’s up to 60lbs, but also have a Trap Bar and 6 Plates (45lbs each) that I could load up. Would you recommend carries with these? Any drawback from your POV? I don’t have access to the typical “carry handles”
He looks young for a 62 yr old white guy, but still looks average or slightly older than an average 62 yr old east asian guy. Strength wise and flexibility wise, he could pass as a physically fit 40 yr old guy in any standards.

I do farmers carries, suitcase carries, rack carry, and waiter carries every day in sand, total body workout
love the information and humor!!!
Hangs and hanging are a GREAT longevity/health thing. Helps with a host of problems.
Damn, didn't even know you had a RUclips channel. I got a lot of catching up to do. Love your philosophies, Dan!

Why do I only stumble into your channel now? The RUclips algorithms not working so well...Thanks for sharing your wisdom Dan!
Filling the gaps! Love it !
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this Dan. Huge fan :)

He recommends to do them simultaneously.

Agreed. I probably do suitcase carry workouts for months without doing farmers at all. The switch happened for me maybe five years ago.
@DanJohnStrengthCoach what is the difference between the suitcase carry and farmer walk? Trying to learn. Thanks!

Dan John, 62 and obviously doing it right, edit: also you speak as sporadically as you write
Hey Dan, is it safe to farmers carry on a slight incline/decline? I live on a hill and don’t have access to a level stretch of street.
I think so. I've never seen an issue.

Thoughts on farmer carries to even out QL discrepancies?
Hi Dan, I've recently incorporated Farmers Walk into my workout. I'm doing 500 steps carrying 22 pound dumbell in each hand.
That's a lot of time...500steps? Light load but probably 10times more steps I'm doing. 💪
I do 4054 in my circuit workout 12 lbs on each side maybe that’s over kill 🤦🏾♀️

The answer is all three. You need to do the variations...I think.
Number 1 is best.

Hey Dan how do you feel about doing farmers walk on treadmill 14 incline 3 speed? Been doing it for a few weeks and feeling different…
I have no idea...I don't use treadmills. It's probably fine. I have this area just outside my door I use. I call it: "The World."

I meant relative to the loaded carry. My bad.

That's just about perfect. Do the single hand version (suitcase carries), too. If you can increase load, fine...if not just go longer.
I have osteoporosis, don't wanna slip and break a hip
Could I overdo barbell hip thrusts to the point of causing wear and tear?
Best to get a doctors recommendation on that one. I'm sorry, it's just not ethical for me to comment on medical issues.
Can u do carries everyday
Yes.
62?????? Wtf
62 is not that old mate!
Well, I am 65 now. Every year I get older.

Do a suitcase carry using a barbell with a decent weight....after that walk you will never dream of doing a different exercise for core ...😂
