This week on dancing with sticks... SRS Aikido confuses me. Every move solo ends with you resetting and apparently in "sparring" or whatever this dancing is called, every move ends in the opponent doing a somersault? In reality when someone gets hit with a stick they don't just roll over on the ground and give up. What is the point of this?

This video is made for instructional purposes, that is why it is so slow. At combat speed you would not be able to see all the parts of movement, making it more difficult to learn.

A few technics are okay, but come on, who would fall like this by a little touch with the jo at the lower part of the arm?

+mickparly I've only taken introductory aikidou, but maybe the idea is that when you're practicing, the uke learns to fall/roll/react as required to not get hurt? In reality, the person executing the counter isn't going to be so slow, and someone attacking them and ending up receiving the counter or throw isn't going to be smooth as the uke here (or know ahead of time what move will be used), and would probably receive mild injuries. The way I see it, the uke doesn't resist because doing so would make getting a high number of practice reps impossible; and in a lot of cases, I'd guess that it's more advantageous to yield to the thrower and roll away than resist and get a sprain or a pulled muscle.

most ancient martial arts have lost its real purpose, as this world isnt as barbaric anymore. So they became traditions and sports. Besides, how "martial" could have them be, anyway? Everybody would carry a weapon most of the times... And if you lose it, the best strategy is running.
If it is real life self defense what you're looking for, no style can beat a gun or taser. Seconds should be a knife, or baton.. and for the poor or sadistic ones, you may take a look into kickboxing, boxing, etc... But to me, fighting barehanded is already a mistake - a dumb choice. However, if you're looking for a way to keep in shape and have fun, and learn some self control, etc,. any traditional martial art is better than any brute comtemporary style.
